Here comes the Corn….
The corn roast / pot luck will be held
at the same location as the Spring
Breakout. (near Buck Creek, south of
Drayton Valley, directions on page 2)
Each year we ask everyone who is
attending to contribute to the meal.
The club will provide the corn, buns,
and beans.
The purpose of the corn roast is to enjoy the outdoors with a little panning,
good food and socializing thrown in. There will likely be tall tales around
our new campfire as usual. Bring your stories and imagination.
The corn will start cooking late Saturday afternoon so there will be ample
time to pan or sluice the bar to find some gold washed in by this summer’s
flood.
If a suitable spot can be found ,we may run a sluice box fundraiser on Sunday morning. If this event is successful we will schedule a follow-up date
for later in September.
Big Floods on our major gold Rivers !
The Athabasca, McLeod, Saskatchewan , and Red Deer Rivers will
give up good amounts of gold this fall. They all had very high flows
and many banks were washed into the river adding lots of flour to the
regular pay streaks. It has been a few years since we had a good flood
and the regular areas were pretty much mined out; they will be great
again this year. Good luck everybody! Get out there and shovel a ton
for fun.

There is good directions on the AGPA web site: on the map click directions, type in your starting point example EDMONTON, AB, then click get directions, this gives you 2 suggested routes ( Well done Fred)
Directions from Drayton Valley :
Go South and East from town to the Bridge
over the Saskatchewan River then continue
East to the junction with Hwy 22 south.
Go South 14.9 km to range road 474, go East
8.1 km.
Follow the map below, to the campsite.

Go west on Hwy 16 to Seba Beach exit ,
Hwy 759, go south about 40 km to jct with
Hwy 39, go west 5km to Hwy 22, follow this

Spring Breakout
The Breakout was a great success. The new site had
everything we needed (except for that yellow metal)
including lots of places to put trailers, on ground that did
not turn into a mud bog if it rained. Also there was easy
access to the bar and the site for our panning competition.
The site was prepared for our arrival by several members, working as a team, and included extensive work
with a bobcat to clear and smooth the camping area,
thanks to everyone involved. Larry Larsen arranged for
all the permits and dealt with local officials. We need to
thank Pratt trophies for giving us such a good deal on
the trophy order. Dave Coupland ran the metal detecting
hunt and donated all the money that was buried for the
hunt, thank you. Thanks go to the crew who bagged all
the competition gravel. (a particularly sinister mix this
year) Thanks to all that were involved with the evening
meal and breakfast. Thanks to Marty for running the
sluicebox competition. Thanks to Jim for bringing a
truck full of tables, tents etc, coordinating putting tents
up, bringing them down and then storing them. As you
can see it takes a lot of effort to run a weekend event,
thanks everyone. ( oh yeah thanks, to who ever brought
the porta-potty)
The corn roast will be held here this year. The summer floods have brought new gold to the bars so panning
and sluicing will be better. ……. Continued page 4

Be sure to bring some extra cash to the corn
roast weekend, we are raffling off three prizes
that have been donated to the club. There is a
needle point/beadwork rendition of our
AGPA logo (with real nuggets on it) , a set of
weigh scales and a bracelet with faux diamonds.
The tickets will be sold
through out the year
and the draw will be at
the Gold Dust Dinner
in November.
More sad news
It was brought to my attention that Nick Geleta ,
one of our members from Calgary passed away on
June 25, 2011.

Help wanted
Anyone who has some time and energy to share please consider running for any of the positions on the executive.
Please consider volunteering your time.
Remember we need a need a replacement for Pat as secretary treasurer, the position is open immediately, but needs
to be filled by the AGM (as she had asked to be replaced at last years AGM) Fred is also looking to be replaced
(please see their resignation letter) I also would like to pass on the newsletter editor job to anyone with time and a
little computer skill.
A good club is only functional if enough people volunteer their time to assist with the administrative tasks
that are involved. It is not fair to have the same people doing all this work year, after year, after year, after year
… well, you get my point.
The tasks are not too difficult to learn and the out going person will certainly help ease you into the new job. I
learned how to do the newsletter quickly, with a little help from previous editors. The job is quite simple, it just
takes time to do it.
At this time I would like to thank both Pat and Fred for all their efforts over the past few years the club has evolved
in a positive way because of your influence…… Thank You
Dear Fellow Gold Panners:
August 2011
I am taking this opportunity to express my gratitude and devotion to the Club and its Members. For the
past four years it has been my pleasure to be your Secretary-Treasurer. It has afforded me the opportunity to make many new friends and experience many of the great activities that the Club has to offer.
It is with a sad heart that I must now ask for your help. Fred and I have been members for 8 years and
have enjoyed everything the club has to offer.
We now find ourselves entering a different phase of our lives that will require more of our time and
commitment. This will not allow for us to attend on a regular basis the events and meetings necessary
to fulfill our roles. I am asking that a member or a couple step forward to take on the role of SecretaryTreasurer.
The duties of this office are:
1. Maintain the books of account for the Club. The duties do include providing at the AGM a set of
books that will account for income and expense and balance to the bank statement. The SecretaryTreasurer does give a report at the AGM.
2. Maintain the membership role and to forward it to the Editor of the newsletter so that all members
maybe informed as to the events that have happened and are about to take place.
3. Collect dues, raffle monies and any other monies coming into the Club. The Secretary-Treasurer then
will deposit those funds into the Club’s bank account.
4. Pay the bills. From time to time an expense for supplies, meals and insurance will come to the Secretary-Treasurer. It is the responsibility of the position to pay and maintain accurate records of the disbursement of funds.
5. File annually the Society papers with the Government of Alberta.
The duties of the Secretary-Treasurer include the above but may as the role grows be shaped to fit the
needs of the membership and the ability of the person doing the job.
We are looking for someone with a vision to see the future the Club has and where they would like to
see it go. Please think about this request. Do not feel you will be alone. Fred and I will offer our help
and support through the transition period and beyond as you may need.

Pipestone School, Prospecting Demonstration
During the late spring of this year several members of our club volunteered their time to spend a
day at Pipestone School near Millet. Thanks to Jenny and Daina for getting the ball rolling on
this one, and to Rod Walker our education and promotions director for keeping it rolling. Thank
you to all of the volunteers. From all accounts it was a big success.
