Vol. 1. No. 8. Bovle Street Oct. 1979 News Community MrcMnW Your inner city newspaper Phase One in the Planning Process A New Vision of Chinatown Chinatown for the City of Edmomaking. The Master Plan for facilities was approved in principle by city council on June 26, 1979. Signs are popping up in Boyle Street for the lease of the Chinatown complex. Now it is a matter of waiting for the first physical signs of the project. A desire for a new and redeveloped Chinatown is now over a decade old. The present Chinatown has existed since the birth of Edmonton city, over seventy-fiv- e years ago, Jasper Avenue east represents the remains of Chinatown and the original commercial area of the city, until the business core shifted west, and the city expanded all around . In the early days the Boyle Street area was a suitable environment for Chinese immigrants to settle and establish their livelihood. Dick Wong, Chairman of the Edmonton Chinatown Planning Committee, says that at this stage it is impossible to know final design for Chinatown what the will be. Yet he stresses that in completing the design the planning department should seriously consider the residential, cultural, as well as the commercial elements that the committee had established in their own plan. Doyle - McCauley J decided at a meeting of citizens planners that the new clinic for the area will be called "The Boyle -McCauley Health Centre". There has been other progress as well. A local .board of eleven to fifteen people has, been formed and has taken responsibility as of October 22. The board is a community board made up of representatives of parents, other residents, schools, and agencies working in the area. It has a membership providing medical, legal and financial skills. So unique that present general manager Willie Wong believes it to be the only restaurant of its kind in Western Canada. The Mayflower is a restaurant inside a church. At first glance it appears to be just one of the many other cathedrals in the quiet residential area of McCauley. At times it is enough to fool people.
