own individual character. Steeped in history, timber-framed
buildings, castle keeps and abbey ruins, Surrey was the
playground of some of England’s medieval monarchs. Even
small hamlets have royal links. The charming landscape has
inspired the arts, as well as names famous for architecture,
gardening and the arts and crafts movement, from Tennyson to
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lewis Carroll, Sir Edwin Lutyens and
Gertrude Jekyll.
In Guildford, Farnham, Dorking, Godalming or Haslemere,

Celebrating Surrey is the county’s first ever
large scale outdoor festival of arts, music,
dance and culture and takes place from 26 27 June 2010.

come every year on this highly acclaimed
spooky and often downright silly guided walk
of the many haunted buildings in Guildford
town centre. If you are ready to laugh until
you scream we invite you to join us.

8pm outside Holy Trinity Church at the top of
Guildford High Street. Tours last 1 hr 45 mins

A visit to the historic market town of Dorking
and to the surrounding Surrey Hills Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a special
experience. Almost anywhere within Dorking
there are glimpses out towards the Surrey
Hills providing a dramatic backdrop to
the day-to-day activities of the town. The
countryside in turn provides panoramic views
of Dorking. The spire of the parish church of
St Martins is one of the tallest in the country
and it acts as a landmark for visitors and
local people alike. Dorking boasts a unique
mix of well-known High Street names and a
spectacular range of independent retailers,
offering a unique selection of goods and
services, and a renowned antiques quarter.
Dorking hosts a remarkable range of festivals
and events. Music in Dorking will forever
be dominated by Ralph Vaughan Williams,
one of England’s most famous composers,
who lived in the town for many years. The
Leith Hill Music Festival has continued for
100 years and Vaughan Williams conducted
and premiered many of his own works for the
festival.
The vibrant atmosphere of Dorking is most
noticeable during town centre festivals. The
annual Gala Night in the run up to Christmas

Explore Waverley’s market towns

Named after the Cistercian Abbey on the
outskirts of Farnham, Waverley is tucked
away in the southwest corner of Surrey.
The area offers a surprising oasis of quiet
rural charm where nature and history have
combined to create a landscape of great
variety enriched with literary, artistic and
musical associations.
Visitors can bike, ride or walk the bridleways
and footpaths of the Greensands Way and
Frensham Common or visit the large areas
of National Trust heathland at Hindhead and
the National Nature Reserve at Thursley. The
River Wey runs through the borough giving
visitors miles of riverside walking and boats
are available from The Farncombe Boat
House allowing you to row or punt up the
river and the Great Pond at Frensham offers
a sandy beach where visitors can swim,
sunbathe and soak up the atmosphere.
The towns and villages in Waverley offer a
wealth of historic buildings, some dating as
far back as the 15th century. A walk through
any of the towns and villages will give you
an insight into their history and the town
museums, The Rural Life Centre at Tilford
and the Sculpture Park at Churt are well
worth a visit.
Waverley towns have a wide variety of shops,

The Villages
Enchanting villages and hamlets link the four
market towns with picturesque greens and
commons being accessed by the lanes that
characterise the area. Take time out to explore
the villages and see the wealth of historic tilehung and timber-framed cottages as well as
visiting the many local pubs and restaurants.
Cranleigh
Reputedly the largest village in the country,
Cranleigh’s picturesque, level main street
boasts a wealth of independent shopping
stores and cafes. As a key point on the
Greensand Way, Cranleigh offers walkers and
cyclists a welcome break.
Farnham
Tucked into the western corner of Surrey,
nudging the Hampshire border, Farnham, home
to the University of the Creative Arts, is a lively,
market town, with many beautiful boutiques
and quirky independent shops - great for
finding something that’s a little bit different.
Farnham is a historical and architectural gem;
its Georgian buildings and wide, sweeping
Castle Street maintain a serene and timeless
elegance.
The town is crowned by a 12th century castle
overlooking the tight cluster of shops and
houses in the river valley below.
Godalming
A small historic market and coaching town
where, to this day, cattle graze on the water
meadows and canal boats rest up against the
Wharf. Godalming was the first town to have
street electricity and in 2008 became the first
market town to have a free wireless network in
the town centre.
Haslemere
An attractive old market town perched where
the three counties meet, it was home to Alfred
Lord Tennyson and Arthur Conan-Doyle. The
town is surrounded by magnificent countryside
including the Devil’s Punchbowl at Hindhead.

Visit Woking in 2010, to experience
the very best the county has to
offer, whatever the season.
On Shrove Tuesday in February, local
businesses and organisations enter teams in
the very entertaining Pancake Race, which
is always well supported by an appreciative
crowd. Later in the month, visitors can enjoy
the spectacle of Chinese New Year.
In Spring, the biennial international dance
festival will return to venues across Woking,
delighting audiences with superb professional
shows and giving dancers of all ages an
opportunity to join in special performances.
In April, families can visit the Woking Canal
Festival on Easter Weekend, or join in our
traditional St George’s Day celebrations,
which promise to delight old and young alike.
On 2 June, the Tour Series one-day
professional cycling event will return to
the heart of Woking. The day will include a
whole afternoon of music and cycling-related
activities, including youth and amateur races,
demonstrations and skills sessions, before the
exciting high-speed race around the streets of
Woking in the evening.
Mid September hails Heritage Open days,
when a dozen or more properties which are
usually closed to the public or charge for
entry will open their doors to help celebrate
the Borough’s fantastic architectural and
cultural heritage.
Although Woking is a modern town, the
Borough has a long and rich history, which
is best explored on foot or by cycle to the
nearby villages and sites of historic interest.
Why not visit the fascinating Dhammakaya
Centre for Buddhist Meditation in a Victorian
decommissioned church, or the Art Deco
splendour of Southern Railway’s Electrical
Control Room?
In October, the H. G. Wells Conference and
Events Centre will be the venue for Woking
Means Business, a free, day-long exposition
of local businesses and organisations,
alongside complimentary seminars and
workshops.
Woking Park is the venue for the spectacular
annual fireworks display and traditional
fun fair in November, organised by Woking
Round Table. If you visit The Lightbox later
that month, you can experience the wonder
of an illuminated boat cavalcade on the
Basingstoke Canal. As the sun sets, seasonal
music will herald the parade of festively
decorated boats, lighting up the waterway
from Town Quay to Arthur’s Bridge in Horsell.
Farmers’ Market is held in Town Square,
on the third Thursday of every month.
This outdoor venue also hosts seasonal
stallholders, including a continental market,
and craft and gift fairs, throughout the year.
Or why not book some seats for the biggest
and brightest pantomime in the region, at The
Ambassadors’ New Victoria Theatre? Stars
of stage and screen are guaranteed to wow
audiences in this superb, fully accessible
venue.
Visitors to Woking who have mobility
problems can take advantage of Shopmobility
and the free town centre buggy. Parking is
plentiful, available 24-hours a day and under
CCTV surveillance for added reassurance.

The Surrey Hills offers some of South East Englands most
beautiful and accessible countryside. Famous beauty spots

The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is
one of 36 nationally protected landscapes in England, having
equal landscape status and protection to a National Park.
The hills stretch across the chalk North Downs that run from
Farnham in the west, above Guildford, Dorking and Reigate,
to Oxted in the east. To the south are the Greensand Hills that
include Black Down, the Devil’s Punch Bowl and Leith Hill.

Managed by the National Trust, The Devil’s
Punchbowl and the Hindhead Commons are
a swathe of unspoilt woodland valleys and
heath, marking the southern gateway to the
Surrey Hills.
The Devil’s Punchbowl is a remarkable and
awe inspiring feature. Local legend has it that
the Punch Bowl was created by the Devil;
hence the name. It was actually formed by
springs which cut into the soft rock creating
the largest spring-formed feature in Britain.
The slopes of the Devil’s Punch Bowl, a large
natural amphitheatre, are covered with heath,
small streams and areas of woodland.
From Hindhead, you will be able to view the
construction of the A3 Hindhead Tunnel from
two viewing platforms that overlook the new
tunnel portals. This is a major £371 million
highway improvement scheme that will
include the closure of the existing A3 around
the Devil’s Punch Bowl, bringing considerable
environmental benefits to this internationally
prized area. The tunnel itself will be opened in 2011.

Leith Hill is at the heart of the Surrey Hills. It
is an area of woodland, parkland, farmland
and open heath, mainly managed by the
National Trust.
It is crowned by an 18th Century Gothic
tower which commands extensive views. It is
the highest point in southern England and the
summit at 965ft (294m) offers a view of the
sea, some 26 miles away to the south, and of
London to the north. Since Victorian times it
has been a popular site for picnicking.
There are colourful rhododendron displays
(May to June), self-guided nature trails
with accompanying leaflet which informs
visitors about the rare variety of heather and
woodland wildlife, including the stonechats,
woodlarks and barn owls. Seek out the
Walter Bailey sculpture and enjoy the glorious
views to the South Downs.

give rise to a rich diversity of flora and fauna.
There are nature reserves, rare plants and

The Hospital of the Blessed Trinity,
Guildford was founded as a “place of rest”
in 1619 by George Abbot, Archbishop
of Canterbury. Now known as Abbot’s
Hospital this magnificent Grade 1 listed
Jacobean almshouse continues to provide
accommodation for local elderly people in
a tranquil courtyard setting right in the heart
of the town.
Built to the highest standard of seventeenth
century craftsmanship, the building remains
relatively unchanged by the passing years.
Abbot’s Hospital retains its panelled
Common Hall containing dining hall furniture
from 1622, a Chapel with stunning stained
glass windows, a medieval clock and
beautifully maintained gardens.

Built by the Venetian architect, Leoni, in the
1730s for 2nd Lord Onslow, Clandon Park
has one of the finest marble halls in Europe.
The 4th Earl served as Governor of New
Zealand from 1888 - 1892, which is why there
is a Maori meeting house in the grounds.
Attractive gardens contain a sunken Dutch
garden, grotto and stunning bulb field in
spring. Inside a superb collection of 18th
century furniture, textiles and one of the
finest collections of porcelain, including
Meissen Commedia dell’arte figures.
Clandon is also home to the Queen’s Royal
Surrey Regiment Museum. A first class
licensed restaurant in the vaulted undercroft
is open for coffee, lunch and teas from 11am.

Hatchlands is set in a beautiful 430 acre
Repton park offering a variety of parkland and
woodland walks. The house was built
for the naval hero Admiral Boscawen in 1756
and boasts the earliest surviving interiors
by Robert Adam. Inside explore the world’s
largest collection of composer related
keyboards upon which J.C.Bach, Chopin,
Mahler & Elgar, to mention a few, have played.
The shop and licensed tearoom serving
coffee, lunches and teas can be found in
the lovely cobbled courtyard, both open the

Originally an elegant 1820s Regency villa

This site, created by local wealthy land
owner Hugh Locke King in 1907, was the first
purpose built motor racing circuit in the world
and where pioneer aviator AV Roe made his
first trials in powered flight. It developed to
become a wonder of the Edwardian age and
one of the most exciting and ‘happening’
places of the 20s and 30s.
Brooklands embraced most of Great Britain’s
automobile World Record Breaking success.
In the air, the Vickers Vimy, Wellington
Bomber, Hawker Hurricane and the iconic
Concorde were all symbolic of the pioneering
effort that pervaded these few Surrey acres.
Brooklands Museum tells the full story with
genuine artefacts and memorabilia. It is

The Great Barn at Wanborough lies just to
the north of the Hog’s Back. It is one of the
largest and most important medieval barns
in south east England. It was built in 1388
by the Cistercian monks of Waverley Abbey,
five miles away, as part of a ‘grange’ - a farm
which supplied the abbey itself.
Waverley Abbey was closed down by King
Henry VIII in 1536 but the barn has remained
essentially as it was in the Middle Ages.
Stewards are available on the above open
days to conduct tours of the hamlet including
the barn and church. Visits by groups can be
arranged on other dates.

The Rural Life Centre is a museum of past
village life covering the years from 1750 to
1960. It is set in over ten acres of garden and
woodland and housed in purpose-built and
reconstructed buildings including a chapel,
village hall, cricket pavilion and schoolroom.
Displays show village crafts and trade
such as wheelwrighting, bakers, vets and
many more. An historic village playground
provides entertainment for children as does
a preserved narrow guage light railway
which operates on Sundays. There is also
an arboretum with over 100 species of trees
from around the world.

Shalford Mill is a wonderful hidden gem, in
the quiet backwater of Shalford sitting across
the clear water of the Tillingbourne stream.
The National Trust runs regular guided tours
of this well preserved early 18th century
water mill. The building has remained
almost unaltered since ceasing operations
in 1914. Although the water wheel no longer
functions, it is still possible to trace the
remarkable journey of grain around the mill
before it was bagged up and carted off to the
bakers.

The medieval Undercroft on Guildford High
Street is one of the finest examples in the
country. Dating from the end of the 13th
century, this stone vaulted semi-basement
is thought to have been a merchant’s shop,
selling wine or expensive cloths or silk.
Undercrofts like this are a feature of towns
engaged in the import and export trade,
and the merchant who built this Undercroft
must have expected to deal with prosperous
clients who sought luxury goods. There are
traces of perhaps half a dozen Undercrofts in
Guildford at the time that this one was built.
They were very expensive and only a rich
merchant could afford the masonry work,
indicating that Guildford was very wealthy
throughout the middle ages.

Primary School and St Luke’s Church in
Grayshott, a short drive from Farnham and

Grayshott Pottery offers a studio gallery, an

Bocketts Farm is a working family farm set
in beautiful countryside on the slopes of
the North Downs in Surrey. We have many
breeds of animals and lots of attractions for

and the harvest punctuate our farming year

CHOOSING
ACCOMMODATION
When choosing your accommodation look
for the Quality Rose, the official marque of
the Enjoy England national tourist board
rating scheme.
Visit Britain and the AA now use the same
criteria when carrying out their inspections.
They award from one to five stars to reflect
the overall quality of the experience of
staying at each property. Look for the Quality
Rose, the symbol that denotes a property
has been assessed by Quality in Tourism. As
well as the star rating being awarded, it is
also possible for properties to be given gold
or silver awards to indicate an extra special
effort is made at these places. The AA logo is
easily recognised with its yellow background.
Higher star-rated accommodation tends
to have more spacious bedrooms and
bathrooms, and in hotels a higher staff
to guest ratio, so service should be very
attentive. At five star, you can really expect to
be pampered in luxurious surroundings!
For serviced accommodation, there are two
separate schemes - one for hotels and one
for guest accommodation. Hotels have to be
licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a
week (unless categorised as a Metro Hotel)
and have all rooms en suite or with private
bathrooms.
