NIÑOS FEROCES (FIERCE CHILDREN) (Destino, 2011,
395 pp.)
NOVEL
Lazaro, a young trainee writer, can’t find a story to tell. His teacher
gives him the story about Jorge, a young Madrileño like himself, who,
70 years earlier, enlisted in the first expedition of the Blue Division on
13 July 1941. A journey that took him to the battle of Krasny Bor on the Leningrad front,
and later in 1945, to defend Berlin in the uniform of the Waffen SS. Accompanied by his
readings of Walter Benjamin, Jorge Semprun, Günter Grass and Sebastian Haffner,
Lazaro writes a vibrant story while the indignados of Madrid’s 15-M movement are
camped out in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol.
Niños feroces is a novel about youths who take up arms in wars while those who
unleash them remain safe, well away from the battlefields.

nevertheless soothe the raging beast. A retired policeman is found hanging from a

to redeem his shattered life through duty and impossible love. Set in contemporary
Catalonia, this gripping detective novel by Lorenzo Silva, an undisputed master of the
genre, goes beyond the plot to present a gritty portrait of a human being beset by moral
doubt, inner-demons and the wrong choices they have made.

OF
GUARDIAS
CIVILES BEVILACQUA & CHAMORRO
DETECTIVE
SERIES
PUBLISHED
BY
DESTINO
5 murder novels (and a short story book –
Nadie vale más que otro) that feature an
atypical Spanish Civil Guard (Bevilacqua), a
bachelor well into his thirties, and his young
assistant (Chamorro), who have nothing in
common with their infamous predecessors.
While the stories themselves are admirable the
author develops a subplot around the envolving
relationship
between
Bevilacqua
and
Chamorro, which is as interesting as the
primary plot. The verbal and situational humour
of it adds greatly to the delight of the novels.
Sold in all over 800.000 copies in Spanish.
1. EL LEJANO PAÍS DE LOS ESTANQUES (The Far Country of Pools) (1998, 243
pp.). Ojo Crítico Prize 1998. In the middle of a torrid month of August, the
experienced Sergeant Bevilacqua receives the order to investigate the death of a
young Austrian lesbian girl found in the Mediterranean Island Mallorca. His
subordinate is novice agent Chamorro, and with her, he will have to go undercover in
seedy nightclubs and nudists beaches. Translation available into German and
French. Rights sold Italian (Guanda).
2. EL ALQUIMISTA IMPACIENTE (The Impatient Alchemist) (280 pp., 2000). Nadal
Prize 2000. MOVIE: TORNASOL FILMS A naked dead body, with no signs of
violence, is found tied up to the bed of a highway motel. Bevilacqua and Chamorro
will get to know the victim's most shameful and dark side, his surprising secret life, as
well as the people that surround him, in his family, in the nuclear plant where he was
working. But as in alchemy, the key lies on patience... Translation available into
French and Italian. Rights sold: Danish (EC).
3. LA NIEBLA Y LA DONCELLA (The Mist and the Maiden) (2002, 300 pp.). The
couple of detectives are sent to the Canary Islands to elucidate the truth about the
murder of a young man two years earlier on the Island of Gomera for which an
important local government figure had been accused and acquitted. They work
closely with the island's Civil Guards but a second murder takes place that touches
them all closely. The story is complex because of the personal relationships that
become entwined with the murders. We learn more about the two detectives and
their maturing relationship. Translation available into French and Italian.
4. NADIE VALE MÁS QUE OTRO (2004, 220 pp.). Four new cases for Bevilacqua and
Chamorro: Un asunto rutinario, Un asunto familiar, Un asunto conyugal and Un
asunto vecinal.
5. LA REINA SIN ESPEJO (The Queen without a Looking Glass) (2005, 384 pp.). A
woman is found stabbed to death in a small town in the province of Zaragoza.
Bevilacqua and Chamorro are called to the scene, only to discover that the victim is
3
none other than Neus Barutell, a famous journalist married to an acclaimed Catalan
writer. Media hounds are soon sniffing around for sensationalist scoops, putting
additional pressure on the two detectives. It is in these strange and disconcerting
circumstances they discover the weaknesses and insecurities she had managed to
conceal under her polished and confident exterior. The trail leads them to Barcelona
and the initial clues point to a crime of passion in a world of vanity and conceit,
evasion and secrecy, one that reaches down into the sordid underworld of the city.
The Queen Without a Looking Glass immerses the reader in a complex and
spellbinding thriller in which the two Guardia Civil sleuths are required to solve
perplexing literary enigmas drawn from Alice Through the Looking Glass, while
unraveling cybernetic relationships and collaborating with the local police to resolve
this thorny and difficult case. Rights sold: Italian (Longanesi) and Danish (EC).
6. LA ESTRATEGIA DEL AGUA (The Water Strategy) (Destino, 2010, 350 pp.).
Bevilacqua - more incisive and more ingenious than ever- his assistant Virgina
Chamorro and a new character, their pupil Arnau, are now confronted with a case
involving marriage fallouts ending up in a fierce battle for child custody, one in which
the reader is drawn into the world of drugs and drug trafficking and the dodgy
dealings of senior members of the legal profession. When a dead body is found at an
elevator door, police report a case of murder at the hands of professional assassins.
A meticulous investigation is set in motion in which the main suspect is the victim’s
ex-wife, an unscrupulous woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. In
this novel, Lorenzo Silva draws on a real-life story that took place in Madrid. The
water strategy, is perfect as a metaphor of the victim’s deepest motivation: “water
has no constant form and therefore conquers”. Rights sold: Italian (Guanda).

corrosive story has its origins in the heart of Madrid’s Premium

spiral of crime involving ruthless drug lords, disco thugs and
unsettled debts.

summer I found out it wasn’t true.”

ANTONI CASAS ROS
Antoni Casas Ros, 35 years old, was born in the south of France, he is a
mathematician and lives in Rome. He is the author of the successful and surprising
novels Le théorème d’Almodovar (Gallimard, 2008) – shortlisted Prize Goncourt du
premier roman in 2008, Enigma (Gallimard, 2010) and of the short stories book Mort
au romantisme (Gallimard, 2009). Chroniques de la dernière révolution is his third
novel.
“The author without a face”
CHRONIQUES DE LA DERNIÈRE RÉVOLUTION
(CHRONICLES OF THE LAST REVOLUTION)
(Gallimard, 2011, 306 pp.)
QUALITY FICTION
His most recent and ambitious novel, Chronicles of the last
revolution is a great literary device encompassing a heterogeneous
plot in which horror and beauty merge and where the characters are endowed with
typically non-human traits. Antoni Casas Ros erases the border between reality, fiction
and self-reference to offer us this surprising story.
In a not too distant future a group of young people commit suicide by jumping from high
buildings. They are “Flying Freedom”, a group of anarchist militants led by the
mysterious "Y". It all begins with the history of Lupa, a chronicler who must tell her
story on the evening of Freedom Flying. The chroniclers are underground reporters
who risk their lives to help the revolution end the corruption and perversity of the
dominant system. Their testimonies and the stories of those who gravitate around them
intermingle, showing us a world that is about to crumble. Strange events take place
and a devastating phenomenon seems to materialize. The story is told through the
voices of different narrators, ending up as a hallucinatory tale in which drugs and sex
go beyond convention and beyond us into a dark underworld ruled by rules beyond our
logic, where "the last revolution” will take place.
"Caution: this book can cause serious damage to your body and your heart. This
book burns.” Marianne Desroziers
"Once you have finished reading this novel, the impression of having travelled to
the edge of augmented reality lingers, with persistence of vision." Christine Bini
"Lively, violent, sensual, rich, mortal, anarchic, brilliant, stylish, sombre, aerial,
crazy, mythological…" Librairie Le Divan, Paris
"A book of violent intense poetry that steadily gains ground like the lava of an
erupting volcano." Nadejda, Sur Babelia
(Original in French.)

LE THEOREME D’ALMODOVAR (Gallimard, 2008, 130 pp.)
NOVEL
Since his terrible accident fifteen years ago, Antoni is living as a
recluse. Disfigured, he hides himself and only leaves his apartment at

to write, about his past life, the love he lost during this tragic night, his loneliness. He
thinks about his father, a passionate Franco supporter; his mother, an idealist
revolutionary; his chidhood, sweet and uncomplicated. He dreams that Pedro
Almodóvar will like story and produce a film about it. The writing gives hime the
courage to quit his isolation; he finally meets Lisa, flamboyant transsexual, and a
powerful bond is formed between them. This intense and mysterious first novel makes
us witnesses in amazement to the reconstruction of a broken man. Wihout pathos,
Antoni Casas Ros delivers a powerful and human story.

Yayincilik) languages. Italian translation available (by Marcella Uberti-Bona for

ÚLTIMA ROMA (Edhasa, 2012)
HISTORICAL NOVEL
a contenido adicional.

ZERO (ZERO) (Planeta, 2011, 248 pp.) – 12 years and over
NOVEL YOUNG ADULT
Zero, who lives in what seems like the perfect world, just doesn’t fit in.
When his limousine accidentally hits a girl named Isla one day, he
becomes absolutely infatuated with her, as she is “different from
everyone else in the world”. Thanks to Isla, Zero finally decides to
leave home and go in search of a place where he can just be himself.
This is how he discovers Satarip, a magical land inhabited by a group of rebellious,
mischievous pirates who are determined to stand up against everyone and everything.
They’re naïve enough to think that they can change the world - and stubborn enough to
actually do it.
Lola Beccaria draws us into a world where characters face the challenge of being
themselves, even when this means defying all of the social conventions they’ve ever
known. Zero is a tender, moving tale, written with the narrative mastery of the great
classics and the power to change the life of every reader daring enough to take part in
the adventure.
Chosen for the 2012 Hache Prize.
“An irresistible story which many readers are sure to identify with in their own
way.” - Care Santos, Lecturas
“Along the lines of great stories such as Alice, Momo, Peter Pan and The Little
Prince, the author adds a worthy new work to the genre; the dialogues and story
line shine with a unique, personal philosophy, chock- full of humorous touches.”

UNA MUJER DESNUDA (A NAKED WOMAN)
(Anagrama, 2006, 172 pp.)
EROTIC NOVEL
With the press on the verge of printing a story that will destroy
her political career once and for all, interior minister Martina
Iranco decides to put pen to paper. The reader becomes a
witness and an accomplice to her astonishing confession.
She describes her private universe and the key moments in
her life, leaving nothing out. Steadily peeling away the glitz
and glitter of her social life, dispensing with morality and
modesty, she confronts her past: from the forbidden passion of a taboo affair with a
friend of her father’s when she was still a child to the dangerous sexual adventures she
throws herself into as an adult, Martina traces the unflinching quest of a young woman
in search of love and affection, a quest that has marked her life. With great literary
density, the narrator courageously gets to grips with our most deeply-entrenched
prejudices concerning sexuality and feminine desire.

A ODALISCA E O ELEFANTE (THE HAREM
SLAVE AND THE ELEPHANT (Companhia das Letras,
1998, 104 pp.) -12 years and over
NOVEL FRO
In the palace of a smug Sultan, Leila is being prepared for her
future role as a Harem wife whose only purpose is to please the eyes and heart of her
master. It is Leila's ears that cause the Sultan's almost religious ecstasy and let him
forget that Leila has quite peculiar habits. She prefers to retreat into a quiet tower and
become engrossed in books or gaze at the caravans traveling out into the endless
desert. When Leila is 15 years old she becomes enamored with a white elephant called
Hati. Her un- wavering affection makes it clear to the jealous Sultan that love and the
wish for freedom cannot be tamed. This unusual but quite natural story of unconditional
love is told in an extraordinarily lyrical and yet unpretentious and flowing voice. The
joyful, nearly weightless prose is laced with a finely ironical tone.
If “love is not such an easy game to play”, then the story of Leila and Hati, which
weaves together the most impossible stories born of human imagination, urges us,
atleast for 99 pages and 999 lives, to believe and immerse ourselves once again in the
adventures of Tristan, Juliette, Merlin, Penelope, Orpheus, Sheherazade...

long as they have heard of love.

23rd century, in a time after much of humanity have disappeared in dark
circumstances, and survivors have recreated quiet communities, in which all
forms of technology have been eradicated. Claris is 12. She’s a lively and
reckless young girl, living the life her disabled twin brother cannot have and
bristling with the joy her widowed father has lost. She longs for a life of
adventure that only boys seem to have in the books she devours. But
adventures are not just for boys. And she’s going to find out the hard way…
SF and fantasy meet in this wonderful journey in the life of Claris’s family, in a
world both strange and fantastic. A true literary novel - by the half French half
Brazilian author Pauline Alphen - that wanders off the beaten track and has
escaped the clichés of the genre.

BIOGRAPHY

From the author of the bestselling Torres and Messi, a revealing new biography of Real
Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
When a young Portuguese player with sublime abilities arrived at Manchester United in
2003, Alex Ferguson put the no. 7 shirt – once worn by Best, Cantona and Beckham –
on his back without hesitation. The expectation was clear, and Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t
disappoint. Ronaldo won the FIFA World Footballer of the Year in 2008, the first
Premier League player ever to do so. Since his record-breaking £80m move to Real
Madrid, his goal-scoring flair has continued and made his on-going rivalry with
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi even more intense. Luca Caioli tells the inside story of this
global superstar both on and off the pitch, unveiling the life of one of modern football’s
great players as never before.

Story (Icon Books, 2012, 352 pp.)
BIOGRAPHY
Includes exclusive interviews with Viali, Eriksson and Mancini
himself.
From the author of the bestselling Messi and Ronaldo, a
revealing and very readable biography of the Manchester City manager.
When Manchester City’s owners appointed Roberto Mancini in late 2009, the message
was clear: this was the man who would overtake the Blues’ illustrious neighbours and
restore the club to the pinnacle of English football. The former Italy playmaker swiftly
repaid their faith, following up an FA Cup triumph in his first full season with the Premier
League title – won in the most heartstopping fashion imaginable – to continue a
success story that had taken him from early stardom in Bologna to back-to-back league
titles as Inter Milan manager. Now, renowned Italian sports writer Luca Caioli gives the
full inside story of Mancini’s rollercoaster life in football – from his early days as a
firebrand centre forward, through glory days with Sampdoria and Lazio, to his
emergence as a charismatic, if controversial, pitch-side leader.
Featuring insights from those who know him best – including family members, former
teammates and managers, as well as an exclusive interview with Mancini himself, it
provides a unique and revealing portrait of the man behind the Blue revolution.

Luca Caioli PROYECT
IS FOOTBALL KILLING ITSELF? – to be published in 2013 by
Peninsula
A deep review of the status of the so-called “people’s game” through the vision of some
of the top observers on the sidelines of football.
This book covers the hot topics that have to do with football and economic situation:
crisis and club’s debt, new investors, money laundering, European business model vs.
U.S. model, new markets for the ball, TV rights and new consumers.
It also deals with the changes in the game itself, players and fans changing roles and
perspectives, violence and racism, gods of the round ball and the opacity of the football
market – to offer a unique perspective about the risks and prospects of future problems
for the beautiful game in Europe and worldwide.
Luca Caioli’s foreword:
“A
sking questions is my job. For years I have been doing it. To understand, to
reconstruct a history, a biography, a fact. I ask questions because I don’t know.
Questions may be easy, dull or stupid sometimes, but I always try not to put rhetorical
questions. And I listen to what the other have to say. To tell the reader afterwards.
Once cleared the concept, we must add that I write about football: articles, books about
their idols and their experiences. Oh... football. The most popular sport on planet Earth
(38 million players, 265 million amateur players and 700 million viewers in the 2010
World Cup final) is now facing a difficult moment. Economic crisis, club’s debts, class
struggle between rich and poor teams, corruption, mafias, money laundering, opacity,
match fixing, mercenary players, empty pitches, radical change in the public and in the
role of footballers, violence and racism, transformation of the footballing entertainment
in a televised product. Problems that have set the alarm off. If things continue this way,
football is at risk of dying or rather commit suicide. Exaggeration? Catastrophism?
Pessimism? Maybe ... but the troubles affecting the game are obvious. What can we do
to understand what's going on? Asking questions. But not to the “actors” of the game.
Neither the players, nor the coaches, or the managers, or the commentators, or the
sports editors. This time I have asked sociologists, economists, anthropologists,
ethnologists, historians, philosophers, writers, people that deal with football from
university, from research. The result is a thought about the "beautiful game", and about
our world.
A small essay that could be an encyclopedia.”

No Inglesa..
Wyler, Robert Wise, George Stevens, Rouben Mamoulian, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert
Mulligan y John Ford.

The film: Invasor tells the story of Pablo, a Spanish military doctor serving in a peace
mission in the war of Iraq, 2003. In a departure routine in the desert, his convoy is
attacked. Refugee along with a colleague in a lost home, they are involved in an
unexpected fight, which nearly cost them their lives. Upon their return to Spain, and still
convalescent, Pablo is decorated for his bravery on the battlefield. But he is wracked
by guilt although temporary amnesia prevents him from remembering what exactly
happened. Pablo has to discover what really happened in Iraq and then he´ll must
decide between revealing what actually happened in the attack and its aftermath or go
along with the official version. The writer suggests a story of intrigue on the conscience
and human solidarity, which means “talking about the illegitimate war on Iraq, in which
all, what we wanted it or not, we were inevitable involved”.

Celso Castro (A Coruña) is from Galicia. His first novel De las cornisas was published
in 1995 under the pseudonym m. de verganza. His subsequent works Dos
noches (2001) and El cerco de beatrice (2007, Ediciones del Viento) were published
under his own name. He is a regular contributor to poetry magazines and literary

ASTILLAS (Libros del Silencio, 2011, 280 pp.)
NOVEL
quiere bajarse." Thekankel, El Norte de Castilla
EL AFINADOR DE HABITACIONES (THE ROOM
TURNER) Novel preceded by a short story, LA
CUERVO (THE CROW) (Libros del Silencio, 2010, 116
pp.)
NOVEL
A first-person almost oral narrative draws the reader into the world
of an uncommonly lucid but candid 17-year-old who suffers from
literature illness. The narrator lives with his grandmother and his mother’s ghost and
works in the archives section of a library. After work he goes to a bar called La Gaviota
where he drinks brandy to relieve his anxiety. Here he becomes involved with the
owner’s daughter Rosalia and meets Draque, a shady character who he introduces to
literature and who is found dead not long after. He soon falls in love with Esther, who
ends up fleeing to Saint Petersburg leaving him with Iris. This novel of great narrative
strength and beauty is accompanied by a short story entitled La Cuervo which
describes the initiation to love of two youngsters and explores the fascination
generated by the deformity of a girl who always dresses in black because of her
mother’s illness and ends up being nicknamed “the crow”.
“It is an act of poetic justice to emphasize the subversive value of Celso
Castro.” Enrique Vila-Matas

LA RAZÓN DE LAS PIEDRAS (LISTEN TO THE
STONES) (El Aleph, Sept. 2011, 350 pp.)
NOVEL
Toledo, 1945. German Yuste, a republican who has fought against
Franco’s armies, returns to Toledo after years away. Every night he
roams the city of his youth searching for memories of his past life. He
sees his sister Carmen again and she tells him how their parents were murdered by the
Francoists in 1936. He is reunited with his old friend Alvaro, the sculptor with whom he
had shared an exultant youthful ardour, only tempered by the atmosphere of the small
provincial capital. German and Alvaro also shared their love for Paula, a love
compounded by similar artistic ideals and ambitions, transporting them to a level of
matchless plenitude. But the love triangle breaks up with the onset of the civil war and
Paula ends up marrying a falangista. In reality, German has not only returned to
summon up memories, but to continue the struggle.
A good story well told in poetic efficient prose, conjuring up an atmosphere of mystery
where time stands still.

ANTONIO OREJUDO
Antonio Orejudo was born in Madrid in 1963, and has a doctorate in Spanish
Language and Literature. For seven years he worked as a Spanish literature professor
in different universities throughout the United States and also spent a year as a visiting
professor at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently a professor in the University
of Almería (Spain). He is the author of Fabulosas narraciones por historias (Fabulous
Narrations for Stories), recipient of the XX Tigre Juan Prize in 1997 and published by
Tusquets Editores in 2007; Ventajas de viajar en tren (Advantages of Travelling by
Train), which was granted the XV Andalucía Prize for Novel; and Reconstrucción
(Reconstruction, 2005), “the year’s most impressive Spanish book”, according to the
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
UN MOMENTO DE DESCANSO (A MOMENT’S
PEACE) (Tusquets, 2011, 248 pp.)
NOVEL
Arturo Cifuentes re-appears like a ghost from the past in the life of the
narrator, Antonio Orejudo. Cifuentes is an old college friend and was
Orejudo’s roommate in New York when they both started working in
the United States. Seventeen years have gone by since they last saw each other, and
a divorced Cifuentes has returned to Spain to become a member of the faculty in the
university where they once studied. He has many stories to tell: his marital crisis, his
unfortunate professional adventures, and most importantly, his falling out of love with
the Humanities. The narrator, who also goes into the fevered experiences that marked
him during those years, does not suspect that his old friend wants to propose
something much more important that will affect them both: he wants to reveal the
phonies for what they are and to expose the roots of an old and permanent conspiracy.
The stories, which alternate between the emotional and the humorous, follow each
other at an addictive pace. The different versions amplify, complement or contradict
each other, as if it couldn’t possibly be any other way. What others tell us, what we tell
ourselves, what the past tells us, and even the truths which we take for granted about
institutions and disciplines, don’t they, in the end, make a “reality to size”?
“The novel has great comic force in many of its scenes, and it is a very
pleasurable read thanks to the author’s talent for anecdotal storytelling and to
his tendency towards cultural jokes and malicious allusions.” El Periódico
“The reader jumps euphorically through the pages of this book and leaves them
as a kid does a parade. Let happiness reign! Qué Leer
“If Orejudo is not the best novelist in Spain today, I put my prestige on the line in
affirming that he is – by far – the most interesting.” Estado Crítico
