One-Eighty is a psychology focused
behaviour support charity for vulnerable
children and young people (aged 4-16)
and their families. Through research and
intensive
therapeutic
family
and
community provisions, we reintegrate
young people back into education, by
working on the thoughts and behaviours
that hinder learning.
Our Vision
Where every child can enjoy a positive and
flourishing relationship with education.
This year, 2014/15 has been a year of focused
growth, success and pride. In our continual
search for more holistic ways of working we
have noticed two key gaps in the provision
offered to parents and young people. Firstly,
we have expanded our provision for parents
to include CBT sessions. These sessions
allow parents to develop a greater
understanding of their children’s behaviours as
well as how thoughts and feelings within a family
interact to cause distress. Secondly, over the
last few years we noticed a dip in academic and
behavioural success during the summer
months, as a result of the school break and a
change of routine. So this year we piloted our
fun and educational Summer Project, which
was a resounding success.
It continues to be a wonderful gift to see
that those young people and families
who have struggled to engage with other
services, have been able to effectively work
with One-Eighty. Half-way through the year
one of the Directors, Johnny Latham, was
awarded the Beck Scholarship Award for OneEighty’s work using Cognitive Behaviour
Therapy within families. As a result of many
agencies and local authorities seeing these
incredible achievements, Hounslow Virtual
School team asked us to work in their locality
with their Looked After Children. Our successes
in Oxfordshire were replicated, demonstrating
that our model is not location specific but has
the capacity to be taken wherever there is
need.
What wasn’t expected was the support we
would get from our local universities; Oxford
University, Oxford Brookes University and
Reading University, in researching alongside
us methods of facilitating behaviour change,
and this will continue into this coming year.
A major priority this year, on top of direct
projects with families, was to make sure OneEighty’s knowledge and experience could be
disseminated to teams and schools that may
not easily be able to access One-Eighty’s services. As a result, we trained 36 professionals
in delivering One-Eighty’s prevention resource
‘Raise The BAR’ and we now provide clinical
supervision to 9 individuals.
In March 2015, we celebrated our 5th year
of service by hosting a 1920’s Casino Night.
Over 100 supporters attended and we heard
from real families who had been impacted by
the work we do. We are a team dedicated to
seeing children and young people turn their
lives around and it is moments like this that
remind us that what we do is so worthwhile
and effective.
Looking forward, we plan to develop structures
for growth – we’re extending our boarders
to include parts of Buckinghamshire, and
we’re continuing to create a sustainability
plan for the new work in West London.
We’re moving into a new premises to begin
a social enterprise office sharing scheme,
and we’re also taking on new Occupational
Therapy students, to add to existing skills in
the team. Thank you so much to all the staff,
volunteers, supporters and donors that make
it all possible.

I have recently graduated after doing a
psychology degree and I wanted to gain more
experience working with young people. I read
about One-Eighty and it looked like something
that I wanted to be involved in. I have really
enjoyed volunteering at One-Eighty so far,
working with young people individually and
in groups. I have got a lot out of working with
the young people, and I hope it has made a
difference to them too! It has been really nice
to be part of the One-Eighty team, I would
recommend volunteering here to anyone!

Our Mission
One-Eighty exists to connect vulnerable Children
and Young People (aged 4-16) with a positive
learning experience through working on
patterns of thinking behaviours and emotions
that hinder learning.
As ever, it is the hard work and dedication
of the One-Eighty Team and our volunteers
that drive the work forward. Indeed, in a year
where not only the volume of our work has
increased but also the level of complexity it
is difficult to sufficiently communicate the
dedication and ingenuity shown by staff each day
in meeting these challenges. As the schools and
individuals One-Eighty work with will
testify, the service that this team provides is
outstanding. The content of this year’s Annual
Report is only a snapshot of the achievements
and milestones One-Eighty has reached, but it
is certainly an inspiring summary.
Behind the scenes, the Board and Staff have
had the complex and exacting, but truly
exciting task of thinking through One-Eighty’s
strategic growth over the next 3 years. Some
of the highlights from our Development Plan
include planning for a new One-Eighty office
in another location; investing in our current
staff and further deepening our expertise;
and of course expanding our reach to support
more vulnerable young people who may
otherwise slip through the net.
In producing the now released Three Year
Development Plan, we have had the joy of
celebrating together just how far we have
come as an organisation. However, we are
of course no longer looking back, there is
simply too much to look forward to! So while
it has been a remarkable journey we believe
that three years on from now our success
and impact will again surpass our present
expectations.

What We Do

Kick Start - At the start of the day Kick Start
helps children who are restless / hyperactive
to understand their body and find ways to
relax and focus so they do not fall behind
in their learning. It also gives their parents
ideas on how to prepare their children the night
before and when they wake up.
Innerviews - One-Eighty offers schools
examples of adults who have had difficult
childhoods, but who have now turned their
lives around. In person they reflect with
the young people about what they wish
they could have done earlier in their lives.
Innerviews also hosts a self-help website
with ideas and advice for any young person
who wants to start to turn their own life
around.
One Seed Leaflets - A simple to read leaflet
about how parents can influence their child’s
behaviour, both positively and negatively,
and some ideas of how to build a positive
relationship with their child.
Make Me Smile - Sometimes young
people feel that mental health problems in
their family are their fault. Make Me Smile
explains mental health to Primary School
children in an easy and understandable way,
whilst the children make a fun craft face that
they can use to explain what they have learnt
to their friends and family.
1-to-1
Intensive
Interventions
One-Eighty, over 7+ weeks, looks at the
causes of why a child is behaving as they do, and
develops strategies that the young people,
parents and school staff can use to turn their
behaviour around. The child spends between
8 - 20 hours each week with 2 or 3 OneEighty staff, who work alongside the child and
family to make sure the child is implementing the
strategies; and that their behaviour is
changing.

BE (Behavioural Education) - This is a
group work project run as a follow up to our
Innerviews project that allows young people
to reflect upon the issues raised and discuss
them in more depth. BE uses positive peer
pressure as a tool to re-engage those who
would otherwise disengage from school.
1-to-1 Advanced Intensive Intervention One-Eighty, over 7+ weeks, looks at the
causes of why a child is behaving as they
do, as well as what services have
already been involved (and what has already
been tried), in order to create a bespoke
engagement plan for those who are either
on the edge of school exclusion due to
behaviour, or those who are refusing to
engage in education positively. One-Eighty
works 1-to-1 with each child until they are ready
to be re-introduced into educational settings.

Advanced Parenting - Some parents struggle
to act as a positive role model for their child
as a result of their mental illness (i.e.
depression or anxiety). For this type of
parent, parenting courses have very little
effect. Therefore, One-Eighty offers them
1-to-1 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy support,
whilst evaluating the positive impacts this has
on their child(ren).
Training
‘Inside I’m Hurting’ - A training course for
any adult or professional wanting a basic
psychological
understanding
of
how
upbringing and other environmental factors
can impact the behaviour of children and
young people as they get older.
Raise The BAR (Behaviour, Attitude,
Respect) - Training in identifying early
indicators for young people who may
show behaviour problems in the near
future, and a resource booklet with ideas
for teachers who want to respond with early
intervention in their own school settings.

I think all services should be trying to use One-Eighty. Not only is
it a great service to help and support young people achieve … it
can prevent young people having to access more formal services
such as CAMHS.

A very professional response to a child with obvious high levels of
need. Practitioners offered a skill set which reflects the diverse and
complex needs that children in mainstream schools often face.
Communication was seamless and enabled the team around the
