Rowing is teamwork, endurance, and fun outdoors by Johannah Cordon-Hill Have you ever walked along Lake M e n d o t a a n d wondered about those long thin boats racing by with people rowing in unison? What are they doing? Where do they come from? And, most importantly, why? These people are practicing a sport called Crew or Rowing. Some of these rowers come from Mendota Rowing Club, a private rowing club at James Madison Park. In fact, several East High students belong to MRC’s high school rowing team. Rowing is a sport that takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and it is also very fun and rewarding. A common stereotype of rowers is that they are very buff, and this is completely true. Rowers are some of the most physically fit athletes because rowing takes more endurance than most other sports and works your whole body- especially your legs and abs. Rowing provides excellent exercise and builds fitness level, is fun and interesting and a great way to make new friends. What’s Up Around East Kids on Smokies trip crossed same rivers 14 times by Gillian Tomasini making it to the shelter. Day One After an eternity of saying good bye to parents and taking group pictures, we are finally on our way to the Smokies! The bus is packed which might make getting any sleep difficult. My pack, which weighs around forty pounds, is under the bus and I keep going through my gear list to see if I’m forgetting anything. Everyone is excited and cannot wait to begin hiking! However, we’ll have to endure a fourteen hour bus ride first. In the morning, we get to eat at Cracker Barrel! Day Three Finally off the bus in Tennesse! Eating at Cracker Barrel was a huge mistake. My stomach feels a bit uneasy, especially after the winding road. We have about seven miles of hiking today and I am anxious to get started. The bus has let us off at a huge dam and everyone scrambles to use the facilities one last time before going out into the wilderness. For the next week we will be without flushing toilets or any sort of running water. Yikes! Jonas Ross (background) and Logan Dunn were two of the 28 seniors who went on the science field trip to the Smoky Mountains this April. Photo by Grace Liu. Day Three Oh no! We started out today’s hike in the rain! Everything is wet, heavy and freezing cold. During our hike, I felt like I was trudging through mud while walking in circles uphill for countless hours. The trail we followed forced us to cross the same two rivers fourteen times! My pack was absolutely soaked and probably weighed 100 pounds. I thought the trail would never end. When we finally did reach our shelter it was getting dark. I almost cried with relief. Now I am trying to dry out by the fire while I wait for dinner. My entire body aches and I am about to pass out from exhaustion. I am proud of myself for Day Four Today’s hike was 1000000 times better than yesterday! The weather was still pretty rainy and foggy, but there were also patches of sun here and there. We ran into a bunch of through hikers on the trail today. One of the ladies that we met was 75 years old and she was hiking all the way from Tennessee to Maine! She was an extremely fast hiker and quickly passed me on the trail. When we got hungry, we sat on the side of the trail and ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sausage and trail mix. On trail, time is not really important. You definitely want to make it to camp before dark, but everything is much more leisurely and relaxed. We hiked past glittering streams and mile upon mile of lush green vegetation. The sides of the trail were dotted with tiny purple flowers. Looking at the amazing scenery helped me to forget how tired I was. Day Five Woke up this morning with the sun peeking through the tarp Please see, “Smokies” on Page 5 What’s Up Around East East’s Library is long overdue for change by Elijah Bernstein-Cooper, Liz Levy and Ellyn Ochs How many times have you wandered by the East library, only to find it closed? This past semester 242 East students were surveyed on how they use East’s library. A full report of the data will be available in the fall, but here’s what we found out so far: For grades 10, 11, 12 less than 10% of students said that the library is always open when they want to use it. An average of 22% of grades 9,10, 11 have no interest in using the library. 73% of juniors never check out books. At least 25% percent of all students never use the library by themselves. At least 50% of juniors and seniors want to use the library during their study hall. We got a variety of student comments from our survey. This is what students are saying about East’s library: What do you like about East’s library? “The scenic view of the forum.” – sophomore girl “Err’thang.” - junior guy “I love Ms. Metzger!” – senior girl Other students had suggestions: “Make sure the computers are available.” – senior guy “Make the printer work.” - sophomore guy Please see “Library,” on page 12 Be proud of East’s participants in Proud Theater by Terran Tout Proud Theater Productions presented theater, music, and poetry May 21-23 at the Fredric March Play Circle at the Memorial Union Theater. The show, Proud Theater: Full Circle, starred a group of talented teenagers, including students from East. Participating students included seniors Myriah Myers and Olivia Wine, and junior Flora KatzAndrade. This group was formed ten years ago with the intent to foster creativity and self-expression for teenagers ranging from 13-19 years old. Together, these innovative teens wrote theatrical pieces and musical acts that covered homophobia, racism, personal battles, and other hard-hitting topics. With guidance from Proud Theater Art Director Brian Wild and other influential adult participants, the group works to create edgy pieces with creativity and originality. “It’s really all about them (the youth). They write and perform their own work; they have a voice that they want heard,” said Brian Wild. Proud Theater is a voice for a group that is under-represented. They seek to advocate change in the world through “heart, art, and activism.” Outside of putting together a phenomonal show, ProudTheater fosters a place of inspiration and encouragement. “It’s a place where I can be myself and not worry about other people’s judgments,” said a senior Proud Theater member. This year’s performance embraced topics like gender-identity, self acceptance, familial struggle, and much more. “You don’t come out of a performance unchanged,” said East senior and Proud Theater member Aisha Coursen. “We’re not afraid to expose discomforts,” said one Proud Theater member. “Expect to laugh, expect to cry, and expect to be moved.” “Smokies,” Continued from Page 3 on our shelter! It hailed last night and I had the worst sleep of my life but, the sun is finally out. We made pancakes for breakfast, packed up all of our gear and headed down the trail. Our next campsite was only six miles down the trail and we made it there in no time. Since the sky was clear, we could see mountains stretching out into the distance. The sight was breathtaking! Our new campsite is right next to a running stream so we never have to go far to get water. We set up our tents and now it’s time for dinner: garlic chicken noodles. Please see “Smokies,” on Page 11 Music Instead of studying for finals, go to the free Isthmus Jazz Festival by Anna Hipke-Krueger We are just on the brink of summer, and of course that means free concerts at the Memorial Union Terrace. Most notably this month is the 21st Isthmus Jazz Festival, June 4-7. A celebration of America’s unique art form, the festival welcomes local jazz bands to strut their stuff, as well as bringing in artists from other states and countries. This year the festival is headlined by tenor saxophonist David Sanchez, winner of the Latin Grammy. Born in Puerto Rico, Sanchez incorporates Latin beats and influences into his music and is said by many to be expanding the boundaries of modern jazz. All the events at the Jazz Festival will take place at Union Terrace except for Sanchez’s performance in the Wisconsin Union Theater. Tickets start at $18, but those who can’t afford it are reminded that the rest of the Festival is free. More about David Sanchez can be found at www.uniontheater.wisc. edu. Start your summer off right, and stop by the Isthmus Jazz Festival! The sun was shining the whole time but a nice wind kept us cool. We hiked twelve miles on mostly flat ground. Along the way we saw a snake, a couple butterflies and a whole bunch of horses! On our way to our campsite, we came across The Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont in Tennessee. The Institute is sort of like a ranger station with a gift shop so we went in to use the facilities. Tonight’s dinner: Ramen! Day Seven The last hike of the trip is over! We hiked fourteen difficult miles today in order to meet up with the other kids at the group campsite. When we finally made it to the campsite, we compared stories. Everyone had a great time and most agreed that the trip was a lot harder than expected. I’m really glad I took this amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity. It was a great way to end my senior year and I will never forget the the great times I had with my friends. 11 Zoroscopes!! by Ian Olson Aries Remember the Swine Flu? I like being in the library in my free time but it’s rarely open.” – senior girl “Why do you deprive me of my library time?” – sophomore guy The survey’s results show that the library is overdue for change.Students can look forward to improvements for East’s library in the 2009-2010 school year. Administrators, teachers and students are developing a new policy to increase student access. It will include new, unique library passes and easy access during study halls.
