PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BARBARA KINNEY
WILL YOU BE AN UNDERSTUDY? We especially need Trainees to work with
our Editor and Membership Director. Working together on these two important
positions would give comfortable preparation to eventually take over the position.
It is vital to our organization that we get this needed help. While in training, Board
participation would not be required, unless desired.
We must elect officers for 2015. Ballots will be in the November and December
South Bay Beats. We welcome your participation. If you have ideas to share, any
current Board Member will be happy to listen. Mark your calendar for October
26, when Fog City Stompers will play for us. See you then.

MEET THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP THIS ORGANIZATION GOING
W
ithout this man, we couldn’t be running
our monthly music sessions. As the
Sound and Equipment manager, Jim Rouse
makes it all work. On those performance
Sundays he starts before almost anyone else
by going to the Society’s equipment locker to
collect and load up all the sound equipment.
Then he transports it to the Elk’s lodge and
starts the set up so it will be ready when the
guest band arrives. For the rest of the session
you’ll see Jim at the controls of the sound
board at the back end of the building. And at
the end of the session, he packs it all up again
and returns it to the locker. It is a long day for
him. He also helps when Top of the Hill has a
gig that needs extra sound equipment. In the
past he was the Webmaster with our earlier
website, and he helped send monthly
announcements by email to those addresses
available. He’s been doing all this for eight
years for our benefit; the listeners, dancers
and trad jazz lovers, and he deserves some
relief from this dedication and our heartfelt
thanks.

Chasin’
Jazz
AT RANCHO CORDOVA
by Cecelia Maloney
L
ast year’s write up for this festival over Labor Day
weekend was so inviting that attendance at the second
one seemed mandatory. Yes, it was a happy, bustling operation
at a Marriott Hotel, part of a chain that seems to welcome
trad jazz. The badge claiming desk was set up even before
reaching the hotel’s check-in counter. The opening in the grand
ballroom appropriately was the Firehouse Tribute Band.
They wore red shirts with white suspenders, white fire helmets
and a lot of attitude in their role as tribute to Disney’s Firehouse
Five Plus Two, and they were all fine musicians. No drums
but a versatile washboard player who even had a siren and
loud bell for effective stress. What a great start!!
This fan did not attend the venues with the old standard bands,
but went to names sounding new. So go elsewhere for info
on High Sierra, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Blue Street,
Tom Rigney & Flambeau, Big Mama Sue & Friends or
Gator Nation. There were guest artists who appeared with
various groups: Bob Draga, Brian Casserly, Jason Wanner,
Yve Evans, Danny Coots, and Gary Ryan, but the musician
who really got around was Bonnie Otto. She fit in and added
pizazz where ever she was, but a SBTJS fan isn’t surprised
at that. Wally’s Warehouse Waifs is a band that hadn’t been
heard before, but they won’t remain that way. Two white
haired veterans on trumpet and drums led three horns and
four rhythm through a set of well remembered old songs done
in top notch style. A lady singer with a strong voice, did well,
too. Bob Draga came on as one of the band’s original
members, and then they really made a blowout of it.
Another new band worth hearing at more festivals was The
Tepid Club of Cool from Cool CA. Three rhythm and a
reed player made a perfect combo that played a wide diversity
of songs from W.C. Handy to Thelonius Monk, Willie Nelson
and Dan Hicks. They must draw a strong audience of happy
dancers in road houses along Highway 49. From the same
general area was a highly competent Western swing band,
Stardust Cowboys who were left out of the program and
put in rooms way too small for their big sound. In full Western
attire, they were the real package with slide guitar, a fiddle
player, bass, drums and two other guitars and did many original
songs. Plus lots of vocals from band members and a handsome
cowgirl, too. There must be a lot of good nights out for people
in the area around Auburn.
Two men; one on bass and the other on guitar play and sing in
harmony as The Smart Fellers. Bonnie Otto was with them
6
on keyboard and showed what a very talented woman can do
to lift the level of performance of two competent sidemen.
The Professors is a group of festival veterans who have
appeared everywhere and get the title from the fact that they
are instructors at the Sacramento sponsored jazz camp
programs for youngsters. Bill Dendle, Shelley Burns, Jason
Wanner, Eddie Erickson, Anita Thomas, Lee “Westy”
Westhofer, Greg Varlota and Ed Metz Jr are all recognized
names and good to see together. They played a solid set of
familiar sounds and looked like they had a lot of fun doing it.
Crescent Katz is a bunch of younger adults, not all male,
the tuba player with them, and Fire House Tribute, is a young
woman, Priscilla Ornelllas. That and banjo, washboard joined
horns played by Brandon Au and Jeff Kreis to play traditional
music and have fun. They were joined by a young clarinetist
and another Kries and all banged out great Dixieland with
remarkable enthusiasm It was a delight to see such capable,
young musicians. The same talent and class was repeated by
the Au Brothers Jazz Band. The three talented brothers on
horns were joined by well known adults: Uncle Howard , of
course. Danny Coots, Katie Cavera and Bonnie Otto. Overall,
so many younger players were a treat and showed good
promise for carrying on our music.
It wasn’t easy to hear all nine youth bands so only three
were heard. Dixie Dominus was outstanding and others
were good considering their limited experience. Even a sixth
grade band, Decomposers, was impressive with the young
talent and their obvious feel for the music. Look for them on
You Tube as Rae Ann Berry was filming them.
It was a hot weekend, but the hotel remained comfortable.
There was a tent outdoors that was good listening in the
evening. The volunteers were wonderful and must have
worked many hours. Next year’s festival is planned for the
same time. If it is anything like this one, there will be plenty of
the music we like.
MUSICAL EVENING OF BRIAN HOLLAND & DANNY COOTS - Sept. 12, 2014
BY BILL TODD, DRUMMER
Many thanks go to Jarin and Carole Feldstein for using an
intimate house party setting to present the three time “World
Old-Time Piano Playing Champion” Brian Holland supported
by Grammy Award winning percussionist, Danny Coots.
Believe me, it has to be one of the top five playing or listening
nights I’ve enjoyed in the last 65 years of either playing or
listening to any musicians. I did buy their CD “Two Man
Job” filled with fourteen super and unique renditions of songs
we know. My favorites are (3) Buddy Bolden’s Blues, (6)
Dallas Blues, and (8) Caravan. On Caravan the drumming
introduction of 50 seconds is wonderful. The liner notes by
Holland read “Juan Tizol:1936” - Juan Tizol is best known as

the long-time trombonist with Duke Ellington’s band. The
melody of “Caravan” is the result of Tizol’s studies in Puerto
Rico, where once a piece of music was learned, it was inverted
(literally turned upside-down) to create a new melody. “I’ve
always loved the dark and ominous tone of this piece, and we
have done our best to keep that feeling intact in this version.
The beginning starts as if in a fever dream: waking groggily
in the middle of the desert, a caravan of camels walking toward
a nearby oasis, slowly feeling the rhythm of the hooves against
the sand as the hot wind brings you into consciousness.” That
statement from the liner notes reflects the class of the whole
evening.
