Steven B. Herrman – Class of 1978
Steven Herrman was very active in the Music Department at Taft High School. He was a
member of Taft's marching band, concert band, and jazz band. He also served as the band's president.
He was selected to be a member of the All-State Band and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed in
Music".
Steve received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1985 from University North Texas State
University, now known as University of North Texas, one of the premier jazz schools in the country. He
was the featured soloist with the renowned One O'Clock Lab Band, which is the highest level of nine
big bands of the Jazz Studies Division at the University. While in college, Steven received instruction
with world renowned trumpeter Don "Jake" Jacoby, improvisation instruction from Rich Matteson, Jack
Peterson, and Dan Haerle.
Steve is a published author, "Amazing Phrasing-50 Ways to Improve Your Improvisational
Skills", Hal Leonard, 2003. As a Broadcast Music, Inc. writer, his song "Funky Chester" is currently
playing at BOSE Surround Sound kiosks worldwide.
As a professional musician, he has toured with Delbert McClinton, Waylon Jenings, Lyle Lovett,
and Kenny Chesney. His television performances include Jay Leno, Espy Awards, Grand Ole Opry,
Austin City Limits, The Road, Nashville Now, American Music Shop, On Stage, Music City tonight,
Prime Time Country, Lynard Skynard Superbowl Special, Crosssroads with Lionel Ritchie and Kenny
Rogers, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Soundstage, to name a few.
Mr. Herrman has also performed with Melissa Etheridge, Willie Nelson, Rufus Thomas, Sam
Moore, Kenny Rogers, Bela Fleck, Travis Tritt, Kris Kristofferson, LeAnn Womack, and Montgomery
Gentry. His recording credits include Delbert McClinton, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Kenny Rogers,
Lou Rawls, Little Milton, Vince Gill, Hank Williams, Jr., Lorrie Morgan and Sammy Kershaw, The
Gaither Family, Earl Gaines, Roscoe Shelton, Clifford Currie, Rodney Crowell, Brooks and Dunn,
Kenny Chesney, Peter Cetera, Webb Wilder, Sara Evans, Trisha Yearwood, Lyle Lovett, and James Otto.
Steve lives with his family in Nashville, Tennessee.
