Choose personalised details and colours online WELCOME TO DUCATI LAND OF JOY (AND NOT ONLY), THE REASONS BEHIND A SUCCESS In 2015, Ducati achieved sales and production results, unprecedented in the history of the company, with over 9,000 Ducati Scrambler® bikes sold worldwide. This entirely new brand and impressive achievement, which greatly widen Ducati’s target, deserve some attention and consideration. Indeed, it is not only a question of the ability to simultaneously produce four Ducati Scrambler® versions, both at the Borgo Panigale plant and the new plant in Thailand. This certainly should fill us with pride, but the result would not have been possible had this new brand 2 not been right on target both as a product and in terms of image. I received confirmation of this when I tested the Ducati Scrambler® gaining firsthand experience of the values of the Land of Joy lifestyle. This happened on a wonderful day last autumn, when I climbed onto the new Ducati Scrambler® and went for a ride along the roads and through the hills around Borgo Panigale. I must say, I hadn’t enjoyed myself so much in ages! I experienced a wonderful feeling of freedom: no worries, no limits, just riding and having fun. Amazing bike, amazing world, amazing Land of Joy - A fantastic job! 3 WELCOME TO DUCATI +10% +51% In the first half of 2015, the new Scrambler® brand, which fit perfectly into our traditional range, achieved decidedly positive results in terms of sales performance: we’re talking of 4,700 Multistrada 1200s, 3,700 Monster 821s and over 3,000 Panigale models. That’s without including figures for the Diavel, the 899 Panigale, the Hypermotard and the Monster 1200. We can’t overlook the talent of our staff who, day after day, are dedicated to making customers’ dreams come true. SALES IN AMERICA This has led to growth in all countries: performance during the first half of 2015 confirmed the USA as Ducati’s leading market with a 10% increase in sales. In Europe, the strongest growth rate was seen in Italy (+51%), followed by Spain (+38%), the UK (+36%), Germany (+24%) and France (+23%). Satisfied? Definitely. But we are well aware that we can’t sit back: Ducati Scrambler® has opened up a whole new world that offers huge potential for growth; Ducati’s sport DNA is constantly fuelled by the results achieved by its Corse racing teams, whose biggest fans are our customers. 4 S A L E S I N I TA LY This was demonstrated by the success of all the innovations presented at the end of last year. Now however, it’s nearly time to preview those for 2016 during the upcoming autumn shows. It’s a little too early to list and describe them now, but this vast array of important innovations is the result of the work of an outstanding team, able to handle the complexity of selling in over 90 countries and running 11 branches and 3 production plants. In just a few weeks we will astonish and delight you again, sure to reach the heart of all Ducati fans. AS ALWAYS, THIS WAS AN OCCASION FOR MEETING EACH OTHER, EXCHANGING OPINIONS, AND FINDING OUT ABOUT ALL THE LATEST NEWS AND INITIATIVES UNDERWAY. THIS YEAR, THE CHOICE HAS FALLEN ON SARDINIA: PLENTY OF ENTERTAINMENT WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE MULTISTRADA 1200 AND THE PANIGALE, TESTED ON THE TRACK AS WELL 24 THE WPM 2015 SAW THE PARTICIPATION OF 99 REPRESENTATIVES FROM 56 DOC’s scattered across 24 countries and 6 continents: 32 European clubs, 10 North American, 3 South American, 9 Asian, 1 African, and 1 from New Zealand. The event, as has become tradition, lasted a full week, and its strength has once again consisted in offering an opportunity for meeting and sharing things among the enthusiasts that represent the heart of our Ducatisti community around the world. The WPM is also a great opportunity to try out the new bikes in the Ducati range, and this year all the participants were able to ride the new Multistrada 1200 along the stunning routes that wind through Sardinia, as well as to test the 1299 Panigale on track, for the first time at the WPM. A dedicated session targeting every interested person was in fact organized at the Mores circuit in order to enable him to drive these superbikes. It was organized by the instructors of the Ducati Riding Experience, who have arranged and designed for the occasion special exercises, both in the paddock and on the track. The beauty of Sardinia, its variety of roads that proved just right for testing our bikes’ potential, and the perfect Mediterranean climate, provided the ideal setting for this unforgettable experience. See you next year. 25 f a c 26 e s 27 PASSION 28 29 30 31 FREEDOM AND SAFETY: THE FIRST MOTORCYCLE IN THE WORLD EQUIPPED WITH AN AIRBAG SYSTEM CONNECTED VIA WIRELESS The new Multistrada 1200 S D|air® integrates an intelligent safety system with a direct wireless connection to airbags contained in a Ducati D|air® Street garment. The bike is equipped with sensors that read the dynamic behaviour of the bike, and activate the airbag inflation system in just 45 milliseconds in the event that situations of real danger are detected. The system is equipped with sensors and electronic components installed on the bike that interact with the device built into the jacket and vest by means of a SIM card inserted into slots in these garments. 32 33 ITALIAN EXCELLENCE IN THE SECTOR OF PROTECTIVE MOTORCYCLE APPAREL D|air® Street apparel is an integral part of the Multistrada 1200 S D|air® project. Especially versatile is the vest, studied to be worn even over another motorcycling garment. 34 35 PROTECTION, COMFORT, FUNCTIONALITY: INSEPARABLE TRAVELLING COMPANIONS Realized in GORE-TEX® membrane material, two-layered, waterproof, breathable and equipped with an airbag system, the Ducati D|air® Street jacket envisages a detachable thermal lining. The jacket is equipped with Wave shoulder, elbow and back protectors, and with EC safety certification (Level 1). It can be adjusted according to one’s liking at the neck, waist and hips. 36 37 AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED RECORD IN THE SEARCH FOR SAFETY The Ducati Multistrada 1200 S D|air® was the first motorcycle in the world to receive the prestigious “Professor Ferdinand Porsche” prize for its contribution in the field of passive safety. In the event of an accident or fall, in fact, the D|air® system provides highly effective protection, through immediately activated airbag inflation, to the rider’s vital body parts most exposed to impact: back, collarbones and chest. The system was track-tested during the MotoGP and the Superbike Championships, allowing riders who adopted it to repeatedly avoid severe traumas, even in the event of falls at extremely high speeds. 38 39 Ride a Song An award to the best idea for a motorcycle trip, coupled with the ideal piece of music T h e perfect mix for every motorcyclist is an unforgettable itinerary riding his own bike, in the company of his favourite music. That is how Ride a Song was born, Ducati’s social contest to choose the best dream of a motorcycle trip and the best piece of music to accompany it. The best combination will win a Multistrada Experience - an exclusive opportunity to ride the new Multistrada 1200, with the chance of offering this opportunity to two friends as well. The Ride a Song contest is born out of a partnership between Ducati and Spotify, the first motorcycle brand to open an account with the popular on-demand music streaming service. In order to take part in the contest, on air from July to the end of September 2015, participants will have to choose on Spotify the ideal piece of music for their dream motorcycle trip and add it to the Ducati playlist; all the selected pieces are going to feed the dedicated Ducati playlist. Users will be able to recount their dream motorcycle trip, share their musical choice on Facebook, and “tag” two friends with whom to undergo the Multistrada experience if they win. The tracks selected for the Ride a Song contest will become part of the Ducati playlist: play.spotify.com/user/ducati_motor/ Details regarding the contest can be found at rideasong.ducati.com 40 41 Bruno Barbieri, a thoroughbred Romagna local, is the author of several cookery books and a protagonist in successful TV programmes. You are from Romagna: why do you think these two great traditions, nice cuisine and engines, on two and four wheels, combine in your region? For anyone like me, born with one foot in Romagna and one in Emilia, home to one of the best racing circuits in the world (Imola), there has always been a smell of petrol and burnt oil in the air. The food went hand in hand with engines and women. We have all seen great champions driving around in our streets, everyone had mopeds and everyone went fast. We know that you are a motorbike fan and have tried a Scrambler: what attracts you about this bike? First and foremost, the “post-heritage” charm of the bike. It takes me back to memories of my youth, to the carefree atmosphere of those unforgettable years. Owning a Scrambler in those days meant being on the road; through motorbike journeys you could breathe in the change of lifestyle in the country and its people, in short, a bike made the difference. You are a regular visitor to the MotoGP Ducati paddock: where does this enthusiasm come from? As a youngster, I was one who would do all sorts of crazy things to get to see a grand prix. I have always loved the racing world. My dream was to visit the paddock, watch the champions, even at a distance, getting ready for a race, and read the tension, their desire to win the contest in their eyes. What does Ducati represent for you? What is it that fascinates and excites you the most about this brand? For Bologna people like me - because I am from Medicina - Ducati represents a showpiece of our craftsmanship, of our engineering skill. Besides, Ducati is charm. Ducati is red. Driving through Borgo Panigale with the knowledge that the world knows our history fills me with pride, because, whatever one might say, Ducati is also a bit ours. 42 masterchef on the road bru no barb ie r i Joe Bastianich Joe Bastianich, an American businessman and TV personality, is well known in Italy for being on the panel of judges for the television programme MasterChef Italia. Struck by the iconic personality of the new Monster 821, Joe Bastianich wanted to be among the first to try his hand on riding one, utilizing it both through city traffic and in his spare time. Why did you choose Monster 821 Dark specifically to move around during your Italian sojourn? What is it that especially struck you about this model? I find it a perfect reflection of the Italian style, vigorous and unmistakeable. It is a model that combines comfort with decisive performance. How do you normally use your bike? Apart from your free time do you also use it for work? When I am in Italy, I use it whenever I can. Usually to go to work, and then to move around in town. Often, however, I try and carve out some time for an outdoor trip where we can both put in our best performance. Cooking, music, motorbikes: what do these passions of yours have in common? The desire to live my life, my passions and Italian culture to the fullest. What does Ducati represent for you? What fascinates and excites you the most about this brand? Ducati represents Italian excellence. Like Ferrari in the motor vehicle field, it is one of the reference brands for which the Bel Paese is known and often envied around the world. 43 Ca rlo Cra cc o The well-known Italian Chef, Carlo Cracco, has never made a secret of his love for getting about on two or four wheels. With such a strong character and personality, he could not but choose an equally strong and decisive bike. No surprise, then, to find him on the seat of a Diavel Carbon, ready to tackle city traffic while enjoying the power and versatility of this jewel. Passion for cooking and bikes often go together: are there any similarities between a good recipe and a good bike? No doubt there are. I think that precision, power, and style are the three most important characteristics of a wellconceived recipe as well as a dream bike. What is the ideal mix of characteristics for your bike? Seeing that you ride such a decisive model as the Diavel, I imagine your criteria would be equally decisive. My bike certainly has to be fast, but also light and nimble through the Milan traffic. Your dream as a rider? To ride a MotoGP on a racetrack. What does Ducati represent for you? What is it that fascinates and excites you the most about this brand? The name “SC-Rumble” was chosen to retain the assonance with Scrambler® and also underline its new personality, more belligerent with a predilection for dusty, dirt roads. In order to realise the “SC-Rumble”, the factory frame was shortened at the rear, and all the original superstructures have been removed in favour of a monocoque frame made from 56 recycled metal sheet of industrial bins, handhammered and shaped while maintaining their original colour. The headlight fairing, as also the side panels and the headlight housing, are made from handshaped aluminium, while the exhaust manifold, based on the Termignoni aftermarket model, has been completed through a hand-crafted silencer. Lastly, the bike’s set up and riding settings were modified, thanks to the adoption of a rear shock absorber with a longer distance between centres and the replacement of the factory handlebar with one from the Ducati Streetfighter, so as to give the bike a tighter and more reactive ride. 57 Wheels and waves 58 59 Wheels and waves SC-RUMBLE AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL SPECIAL EDITION BIKES ON SHOW AT WHEELS AND WAVES W heels and Waves has represented the last stage of a tour that started in London. Ducati Scrambler® bikes, accessories and apparel are of course already on display in suitable dedicated areas in Ducati Stores, but it is in Padua that the first Ducati Scrambler® Camp is actually located: a different and more effective approach of presenting a universe of trends and bike enjoyment. 65 DUCATI SCRAMBLER® AT THE MILAN EXHIBITION The photos show an overview and the most significant details of the Ducati Scrambler®based special edition created by Radikal Chopper THE SPECIAL EDITION BIKE BY RADIKAL T CHOPPER he Ducati Scrambler-based special edition bike, built by customizer Andrea Radaelli of Radikal Chopper, winner of the hundredth edition of EICMA International Custom Bike Show 2014, was presented at Deus Ex Machina in Milan. 66 On that occasion, EICMA, which organised the event, awarded the winner with a Ducati Scrambler ®, as well as the opportunity to interpret and personalise the bike according to his own personal style. 67 Scrambler at Bike Build Off and The Reunion D ucati Scrambler® participated in two important events dedicated to motorcycle customisation. The boat was entirely decorated in Ducati Scrambler® style, painted in yellow and black, with the sails branded with the “Scrambler You Are” logo (the competition for young film makers currently underway), and on the bridge, live music was played by the Dj set from Radio 105. A huge success with the public this year estimated at over 200,000 attendance along Rimini’s pier and throughout the night. 71 BEACH PARTY AT THE ARNO RIVER S ure, if you image a distant planet where the astral jazz of Sun Ra reverberates and where the George Clinton-led P-Funk Mothership lands, well, on that planet – which we might call Soul Clap – the presence of the Ducati Scrambler® and its Land Of Joy cannot but be a must! This is exactly what 72 happened during a highly successful event along the Arno in Florence in early summer. This occasion also served to celebrate a new agreement with Braccialini S.p.A. for the production and distribution of a range of Ducati and Ducati Scrambler® branded bags, backpacks and accessories. Through this new version, in fact, the unmistakable muscular design of the Diavel has been enhanced by details that endorse its uniqueness and emphasise its already impressive lines. Firstly, the carbon fibre parts – technological and lightweight, of great aesthetic impact yet chiefly designed to improve the ergonomic aspects and to provide greater protection. Then there’s the new seat that guarantees optimum passenger comfort, and, lastly, the dark chrome frame that fits perfectly with the exhaust pipes sporting a Zircotec ceramic covering and with the silencers boasting a brushed stainless steel cover. To end this overview, there are, finally, the forged wheel rims machined with visible finishes. The interventions made on these details have enabled to contain as much as possible the weight which, despite the muscularity of the shape, is brought down to just 205 kg. 76 77 A P E RF E CT F USION OF SP ORT I NE SS AND COM FORT: HI GH P E RF ORMANCE UNDER CONT ROL I N ALL CONDITIONS, F OR F UN, T OUR ING AND M OVING AROUND I N T H E CITY. ALWAYS I N SAFETY The Diavel is a perfect combination of sportiness and comfort. The trellis frame offers in fact both lightness and torsional stiffness, while the fully adjustable 50 mm Marzocchi fork ensures a progressive absorption of shocks from obstacles and offers stability, even during more extreme sports riding. Seat ergonomics - completely redesigned – and the relaxed riding position jointly make the Diavel unexpectedly comfortable, and, together with its low centre of gravity, increase handling performance and riding pleasure in all situations. Mention should also be made of the imposing double-compound 240 mm rear tyre and the Bosch ABS Brembo braking system - features that make the bike even more unique and ideal for whoever refuses to compromise on performance, comfort and style. The engine – the heart of the Diavel – can be customized at any time thanks to the Ride-by-Wire control system, which is linked to the three available Riding Modes. This allows the Diavel to express its personality in all situations, leaving it the rider to dictate the rules of play. As for active safety, it is always at maximum levels, owing to the Safety Pack that includes ABS and Ducati Traction Control (DTC). 78 79 T HE T ESTA ST R E T TA 1 1 ° DS E N GINE I S A R E AL AS S E R T IO N O F P OWER, O FFE R IN G B R E AT HTA K I N G ACCEL ERATI ON AN D P IC K UP, BUT AT L OW S P E E DS , W HILE I T S F LUIDI TY ENS UR E S E X C E P T IO N A L SM OOTHNES S D I AV E L C A R B O N – T E C H N I C A L S P E C I F I C AT I O N S Engine Ducati Testastretta 11°, Desmodromic system, 4 valves per cylinder, liquid cooled, displacement 1,198.4 cc, power 119 kW (162 hp) @ 9,250 rpm, torque 130.5 Nm (13.3 kgm) @ 8,000 rpm, electronic fuel injection and ride-by-Wire system, 6-speed gearbox. These are the departure points for relating the evolution profile of a company in constant growth. In the words of Silvano Fini, Ducati’s Production Manager: “This growth is testified, on the one hand, by 5 consecutive years of record production, alongside the ever greater sophistication of road bikes, packed with track-tested features, and, on the other hand, by the attainment of Top Employers Italia 2015 certifications and ISO 14001 environmental certification. Qualifications that certify our commitment to ever higher factory work quality and greater protection of the environment”, Fini goes on to explain. “For example, last year 45% of the budget was set aside for an improvement of the microclimate inside the production areas, while the realization of a 136 trigeneration plant will make Ducati 90% energy self-sufficient: it might generate thermal energy to heat and cool the site, while at the same time reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 16%”. Last but not least, the production line technology: “Over the last three years, some hi-tech machinery has been implemented for the analysis of residual stresses in steel components and in three dimensional measuring instruments. Other investments went into the crankshaft line and into new numeric control machines for the realization of the camshafts for the innovative Multistrada engine, the Ducati Testastretta DVT”. There are also ever more ergonomic assembly lines, as well as the organization of workshops to invest in continuous improvement and to enhance and consolidate product quality for maximum end-customer satisfaction. In short, Ducati never stops moving. 137 DUCATI MONSTER SAVE THE DATE: EICMA 19-22 NOVEMBER, SEE YOU AT THE DUCATI STAND! Ducati The Redline Magazine Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A.
