WELCOME TO MARSEILLE
For over 15 years, the development of cruises, leisure and business tourism has been one of the
city of Marseille's priorities.
The strategy of developing tourism along with the sector's professionals has helped the city to
join the ranks of the major European metropolises and to host major events.
Over the past ten years, more than 700 million euros have been invested to make France's
second biggest city an essential tourist destination. 2013, when Marseille was the European
Capital of Culture, helped boost the city’s international reputation, making it "Provence’s
Attractive City"!
The city's convention centres have been renovated and extended, new intercity train lines
launched, a low-cost airport terminal and a cruise terminal have been inaugurated and over
1500 hotel rooms have been created; major international brands have opened stores in
Marseille, the Calanques mountains are now listed as a National Park, the Nouveau Stade
Vélodrome has been rebuilt and covered, new shopping centres and a large number of cultural
sites have been opened...
The city showed its capacity for bringing people together and for hosting major events at the
1998 World Cup and the Rugby World Cup in 2007.
This summer, Marseille will be hosting the 2016 Euro Football Championship, and will be the
European Sport Capital in 2017. If Paris is awarded the 2024 Olympics, Marseille will host the
sailing events, and is already a candidate to host the 2025 Universal Exhibition!
Thanks to these events, the image of Marseille has changed, and in a few years it has become
an ultra-modern, fashionable city. A large number of awards have been made in recognition of
this exceptional renaissance!
Marseille has been voted one of the "Top 10 cities to visit in the world" and the "Top 10 seaside
cities to visit in the world" by National Geographic. The website www.luxemagazine.com
elected Le Rooftop des Terrasses du Port among the "Top 10 rooftop terraces to visit in the
world", and the Nouveau Stade Vélodrome was named the "most beautiful stadium in Europe"
on www.eurosport.fr. The Marseille architect Corinne Vezzoni won the "Women's Architect
Prize". The city was voted "The country’s second city to go to in 2013" by the New York Times,
"the most business-friendly city" by the magazine L’Entreprise et l’Expansion and given the
"2014 European City of the year award" by the prestigious Academy of Urbanism in London.
The MuCEM, the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean, won the 2015
museum prize awarded by the Council of Europe. A great success for a museum that only
opened in 2013. Lastly, the Trivago site placed three Marseille hotels among the ten best hotels
in the PACA region.
But Marseille has still kept all its charm and authenticity: it has 57 kilometres of coastline and
one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Its attractiveness is based on 300 days of
sunshine a year, Mediterranean gastronomy, a fine historic heritage, a modernised city centre
and the sociability of its inhabitants!

MARSEILLE'S TOP 10
Marseille has a whole host of monuments, picturesque sights, cutting-edge architecture and
museums all over its 111 districts and 16 arrondissements.
Notre-Dame de la Garde: La Garde hill is 154 metres high and Marseille's highest point. The
basilica, named after the Virgin Mary to protect the city and its inhabitants, was built between
1853 and 1864, when it was consecrated (Suitable attire required during visits to the site). A
museum of sacred art has also been open to visitors since July 2013.
The Old Port: in 600 BC, the Greeks, arriving from Phocaea in Asia Minor, landed in the
Calanque of Lacydon. All through Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the city developed solely on
the north bank of the port. Only from 1666 did the city expand towards the south, under the
impetus and orders of Louis XIV.
Norman Foster and Michel Desvigne have carried out the development of the city centre,
including making the Old Port a semi-pedestrian area. The project undertaken in 2013 was
awarded with the urban development prize from "Le Moniteur" magazine. "L'Ombrière", on
Quai de la Fraternité, is now a real tourist attraction, covering 1000m2 and rising 6 metres high.
History Museum of Marseille – the antique Port
Close by the Old Port and around the completely renovated archaeological site of La Bourse is
one of the biggest history museums in France and Europe. http://www.musee-histoiremarseille-voie-historique.fr
MuCEM: Museum of Civilisations in Europe and the Mediterranean
The J4
The new building, on the converted J4 pier designed by the architect Rudy Ricciotti in
partnership with Roland Carta, is the heart of the MuCEM. The J4 (15 000 m2) contains two
exhibition areas: the first, with The Mediterranean Gallery, is dedicated to exploring the major
stages in Mediterranean civilisation. The second area houses temporary exhibitions.
The J4 includes an area for children, an auditorium for shows, concerts and film cycles, a
bookshop and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace presided over by Gérald Passédat, the 3star Michelin chef.
Saint-Jean Fort
The restored Saint-Jean Fort (15 000 m2) is a historic monument dating from to the 12th century.
Linked to the J4 by a high footbridge projecting above the sea, it provides visitors with
spectacular views that had hitherto been hidden. The public can stroll through a new
Mediterranean garden and explore the riches of the art collections and popular traditions in the
MuCEM, as well as contemporary Mediterranean art. Here they can enjoy open-air
performances, a café and a boutique-bookshop. A second footbridge links it to the Panier
district, leading from the fort's royal gate to Saint-Laurent Church.
The islands of Frioul and the Château d’If: A limestone silhouette off the coast of Marseille,
the four hilly islands in the Frioul archipelago point the way towards the land: Pomègues,
Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen. The Château d'If, made famous by Alexandre Dumas, who made
it a prison for his hero, the Count of Monte Cristo, is a former fortress built in the 16th century
during the reign of Francis 1st to defend the city.
The Palais Longchamp: a hymn to the glory of water, this monumental palace or "water castle"
is closely linked to the construction of the Durance Canal. It is considered as one of the finest
8
architectural achievements of the Second Empire in Marseille. Today it houses the Fine Arts
Museum and Marseille’s Natural History Museum.
The Panier district is the historic quarter of Marseille, the very site settled by the Greeks 2600
years ago. While its authenticity has been preserved, the area has been beautifully renovated,
and is today the home of many artists, craft boutiques and restaurants in its narrow winding
streets, but also the Vieille Charité museum area.
Vieille Charité Centre and two museums:
Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology
With collections containing often exceptional works, the museum provides a wide panorama
on the art of civilisations from the Mediterranean region and the Near East.
Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts
The MAAOA has a rich collection of art objects, bearing witness to cultures but also artistic
works in their own right, from civilisations whose art was long neglected or even ignored.
http://culture.marseille.fr/musées/le-musée-d-arts-africains-oceaniens-amerindiens
Promenade de la Corniche: built in the mid-19th century and extending to the south, the
John Fitzgerald Kennedy Corniche became a very popular site for Marseille
holidaymakers who little by little discovered the joys of swimming in the sea.
Providing a real panorama above the Mediterranean for over 5 km, the Corniche today attracts
walkers, fishermen, joggers or people dreaming of faraway horizons.
On the heights of the Corniche, sumptuous villas called "the Corniche Follies" were built in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries for rich Marseille families (Villa Gaby, Villa Valmer, Château
Berger, etc.).
And below can be seen the charming little fishing villages, where the Marseille way of life is a
daily reality (Vallon des Auffes, Malmousque, etc.).
La Cité Radieuse by Le Corbusier: also known as the Maison du Fada in Marseille, the
building is 165m long, 24m wide and 56m high. Like an urban liner at anchor in a park, this
building designed by the architect Le Corbusier was built between 1947 and 1951. Béton brut
and concrete stilts combined with multi-coloured loggias, and containing 337 flats, a hotel, a
restaurant, shops, an Art and Design Centre, etc.
Exclusive visit to La Cité Radieuse and to a listed flat, organised by the Tourist and
Congress Office. Registration required.
The Calanques: the first periurban national park in Europe and the only French National Park
both on sea and on land. The Calanques contain exceptional flora and fauna (over 9000 recorded
species of plants). With a surface area of 5000 hectares, 97% of which is in the Marseille area,
the Calanques extend as far as Cassis.
Please note, access to the mountain range is restricted between June and September.
Nouveau Stade Vélodrome: The 2nd biggest French stadium after Stade de France, with 67
000 seats. The stadium, built in 1937, was completely renovated and modernised in 2014 in
preparation for the 2016 Euros. This multi-purpose stadium can host football and rugby
matches, but also prestigious concerts and company events.
The home side, Marseille (OM), has the most titles of any team in France.
Exclusive visits organised by the Tourist and Congress Office. www.resamarseille.com
The stadium was elected the most beautiful stadium in Europe by Eurosport.fr

MARSEILLE LAND OF CINEMA
Marseille loves cinema and attracts directors and scriptwriters. The image of Marseille in films,
where it has been both worshipped and betrayed, was for a long time caricatured and
stereotypical. But the city's rich cinema history is only equalled by its photogenic appeal, giving
Marseille a highly prized and renowned place in cinema.
Marseille attracts film-makers, but no one can explain its special attraction: is it the warm light?
The striking blue sea? Its rich and varied historic heritage? One thing is sure, thanks to its
landscape, its spontaneity, its originality and the many talents it has uncovered, Marseille now
has a place of honour in French cinema, on the small and big screens, alongside the greatest
French cities.
The origins of cinema in Marseille
The history of cinema in Marseille began with the Lumière brothers. The inventors of the
cinematograph came from La Ciotat, and filmed their first pictures in Marseille in 1885, on the
Canebière, then on the Old Port, at the Joliette Docks, on Cours Belsunce... So naturally they
set up one of the first cinematopgraphs in France in Marseille, at 3 Rue de Noailles, on 29
February 1886, just two months after the opening in Paris.
23
Cinema developed rapidly in the early 20th century, and the people of Marseille seized on this
art form which was already a great success in the United States. Marcel Pagnol then decided to
adapt his plays and novels to the silver screen. In 1933, he founded his film production
company, Les Studios Pagnol, which made films by Sacha Guitry, Jean Renoir, etc. Pagnol
wanted to create "a French Hollywood" in Marseille.
From 1950 to 1970, prestigious films were shot at the Sainte-Marthe studios, including Lost
Command directed by Mark Robson, with Anthony Quinn in 1966, Farewell Friend directed
by Jean Herman, with Alain Delon and Charles Bronson in 1967 and Borsalino by Jacques
Deray, with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon in 1970.
Cinema at the heart of Marseille
Few people know that Marseille is the birthplace of a large number of famous actors, directors
and film-maker such as Alibert (one-man band, 1889-1951), Antonin Artaud (poet-actor, 18961948), Fernandel (actor, 1903-1971), Andrex (1907-1989, actor in La Cuisine au Beurre,
directed by Gilles Grangier and La Bourse et la Vie by Jean-Pierre Mocky), Yves Montand
(1921, actor, whose heart belonged to Marseille), Paul Préboist (1927-1997, stage and screen
actor in Les Misérables, directed by Robert Hussein and La Belle Histoire by Claude Lelouch),
Robert Guédiguian (film-maker, 1953), Ariane Ascaride (1954, actress, winner of a César for
Marius et Jeannette in 1998), Patrick Bosso (actor-comedian, 1962), Éric Cantona (actor,
1966)…
Marseille has often been the setting for films where the city played an important or even vital
role. Its landscapes and film studios have been used as a decor in many films: from Pagnol's
Trilogy in the 1930s to the Taxi films by Luc Besson in the 2000s, and more recently in the
film Marseille, directed by Kad Merad or the Netflix series “Marseille” with Gérard Depardieu,
to be released this spring.
24
A few figures...
• 385 films shot in 2015 (362 in 2014, including 15 feature films and 19 series)
• 30 million euros injected into the local economy as a result
• 1 000 qualified technicians
• N° 1 city in France for shooting digital series • In 23 000m2, the Belle de Mai Media Centre brings together some fifty companies
generating 1 000 jobs
La Buzine: a château dedicated to the 7th art
Better known as the "Château de ma mère" dear to Marcel Pagnol, the Château de la Buzine
has been the home of the Maison des Cinématographies Méditerranéennes since 2011.
This sumptuous, fully renovated Provençal farmhouse stands at the heart of a four-hectare park
between Saint-Menet and Les Camoins, in the eastern districts of Marseille, and contains a
4000m2 area with a staged visit centred on the Mediterranean, a 350-seat cinema, reception
rooms to house temporary exhibitions, a library and a film library, notably supplied by the
Méditerranée Cinémathèque, while visitors can prolong the visit at the restaurant.
This exceptional site, mainly dedicated to the 7th art, is both a traditional cinema with a
programme of films, but also an "à la carte" cinema library where visitors can choose the film
they want to see from a list of available titles.

THE SEA
The Marseille Provence Office de la Mer, a registered association of public interest, is the place
where all those involved in the maritime world can debate, build, animate and preserve the links
between our city and the Mediterranean. Leisure activities, sports, sailing, tourism, professions,
economy, education, culture, heritage, environment, safety – all the constituent parts of this
relation are explored, analysed and highlighted in major projects and events in and around the
city. www.officedelamer.com
In Marseille, the sea, the coastline and the islands represent an exceptionally rich heritage,
helping to make the city an international capital for sailing and sport.
Exceptional sites
For sailing
- 24 ports on 57 kilometres of coastline with 10 000 mooring rings in the 24 MPM ports, the
major area for sailing in France, 2nd in Europe (after Chichester in the UK).
For leisure activities and water sports
- 15 lifeguarded beaches extending along 42 kilometres of coastline: 2 million visitors on
average in summer (July/August).
Prado Sud Beach: 1st French beach to be awarded the "Tourism and Disability" label in 2006.
Safety and activities on the beach.
- around 100 seasonal lifeguards
- around 100 water sports clubs and associations organising activities all the year round: sailing,
rowing, sea kayak, competitive fishing, powerboating, surfing, kitesurfing, Provençal jousting,
dugout canoeing, etc.
- a top-level French sailing centre, a training base for competitors, with 50% from Marseille
clubs, including participants competing in the sailing events at the Rio Olympic Games.
Internationally famous events
Each year, Marseille's image as a city of sport is strengthened by the many international sports
events hosted here.
- by the development of sailing events that have traditionally taken place in Marseille:
Septembre en Mer (over 900 sea events for a wide public), the Grande Marseille Provence
Maritime Parade, the International Mediterranean Sailing Week (SNIM), the Juris'Cup (biggest
European corporate regatta), the traditional jousting championships, canoeing or rowing
competitions.
- by hosting prestigious events such as the Tour de France à la Voile, Les Voiles du Vieux Port,
Marseille One Design, etc.
Some 250 annual sailing events in the Aix Marseille Provence area.
The Aix Marseille Provence area: the sea as a key to future development
This new metropolitan area is the sole French harbour conurbation, with its main feature being
the Grand Maritime Port of Marseille, the entry point to our region.
With over 80,000,000 tons of goods transported, over 43,000 jobs directly or indirectly linked
to the harbour activities, the GPMM is a port on an international scale.
Building a metropolitan logistics harbour centre will be a crucial issue for the AMP area in
support of the Blue Economy.

CRUISES
CRUISES
Marseille, the essential cruise destination in the Mediterranean, is also the harbour of
Provence and France's number one port of embarkation.
A few kilometres from the city are Aix-en Provence, Cassis, Bandol, Pays d’Aubagne, but
also Les Alpilles, Saint Rémy de Provence, Les Baux de Provence, Arles and the Camargue,
Lubéron, Avignon…
All sites that are well worth visiting for a long or short stay, before or after your cruise.
Club de la Croisière Marseille-Provence
In close collaboration with the city of Marseille and the Tourist and Congress Office, the
Club’s work covers three fields: promoting stopovers and Marseille, welcoming passengers
on the quayside and in the city, and adapting the harbour infrastructure and services.
http://www.marseille-cruise.com
Tel: +33 (0)4 91 39 33 98 - [email protected]
The figures:
2013: 1 190 000 cruise passengers made a stopover in Marseille
2014: 1 315 000 cruise passengers made a stopover in Marseille
2015: 1 500 000 cruise passengers made a stopover in Marseille
2018: 2 million passengers expected
The biggest cruise operators and companies "stop over" in Marseille:
Costa Croisières, MSC Croisières, Croisières de France, Royal Caribbean International
Cruises, Winstar Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises,
Oceania Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Azamara Cruises, Sea Cloud
Cruises, Ponant, Princess Cruises, Celestyal Cruises...
The cruise market in the Mediterranean is keeping up its heady pace
Cruises are one of the tourist activities that have continued to grow in a troubled economic
context. Europe and the Mediterranean, in particular, have become major navigation areas for
ship owners.
Marseille has found its place in this competitive market and is more than ever positioned as
the main port of embarkation in the French market.
The cruise market is continuing to develop in France and in Marseille in particular. The
different developments in Marseille harbour, notably the concession of the MPCT cruise
terminal to the MSC Croisières, Costa Croisières group, has enabled Marseille to boost the
promotion of its embarkation/disembarkation activity, helping to generate strong revenues.
Marseille is in the top five cruise ports in the Mediterranean and in the top 15
worldwide, in front of New-York!

SHOPPING IN MARSEILLE!
Constantly developing retail offer
Over the past ten years, retailing in the city centre has undergone a qualitative and
quantitative leap forward with the arrival of prestigious brands and the launch of modern
retailing facilities. These new features attract local shoppers, but also the city’s visitors.
City centre shops
With a total of 15 000 shops, including 5,900 business premises in the city centre, Marseille
has become a top destination for shopping.
The heart of the city centre has a wide range of brands for clothes, with growth in the
hygiene/health/beauty sector, a steady progression in the mid-range and upmarket categories,
and a small rise in culture and leisure goods.
Marseille city centre attracts buyers from all over the PACA region and beyond. A particular
effort has been made in favour of holidaymakers, particularly the growing number of visitors
on cruises. The rise in the number of tourists over the past few years has led to the growth
of activity in the heart of the city centre.

Brands choose Marseille
New fashionable and/or atypical brands have arrived in the Marseille area. The city is
sometimes the first one chosen to open a new store in France.
- Souleiado. Back to Marseille. The firm has opened the biggest shop in its network in Rue
Francis Davso, with 230m2 dedicated to this ready-to-wear and accessory brand with its wellestablished reputation.
- Big Fernand. Located in the Docks, the restaurant serves homemade gourmet burgers, with
diners choosing the ingredients. The founders underline that their ingredients are "made in
France".
- Triaaangles. Founded in 2012, this start-up has opened an outlet in Marseille on the Docks.
Here you can buy products that are made-to-measure by a community of designers. Each unique
product is made at the customer’s request. The store in Marseille is the second in France, after
Aix-en-Provence.
- Les Toiles du Large. Bags, accessories and decorative objects made from recycled sails. All
the sails are recycled in Provence, in La Ciotat.
- The Old Compagny & Friends. A brand for men and women founded in January 2013 around
the concept of vintage army collections, unique pieces picked up in military barracks and then
customised.
Brands that are expanding their activity in Marseille
At the same time, brands that are already doing business in Marseille are continuing their
development.
- Starbucks. After a first outlet opened in Rue de la République, then another in Rue Montgrand,
Starbucks opened cafés in Les Terrasses aux Port and in Grand Littoral in 2014.
28
- McDonald's. After opening the biggest city-centre McDonald's in Rue de la République, the
group opened a restaurant on the Old Port and plans a new outlet on Place Félix Barret.
- Galeries Lafayette. A 3rd store in Marseille. It will be opening in the Prado shopping centre in
2017 and aims to reinforce the department store's presence in the 2nd biggest city in France. The
new store will have a surface area of 9 400 m2 on four levels.
- H&M. The shop will be opening in 2016, on the site of the Virgin Store in Rue Saint Ferréol.
The new outlet will have four levels and over 3 000m2 of retail sales area. This new outlet is
more modern and enhanced, a "Flagship Store" designed to raise brand awareness.
- Habitat. Opened in July 2014, this new shop is situated near the Mucem in the Voûtes de la
Major.
New retailing trends
As part of the redevelopment of the city centre, the city of Marseille has encouraged new
retailing clusters to be opened in 2015.
- Les Terrasses du Port.
Opened in May 2014, "Les Terrasses du Port" is a shopping destination with 190 brands and
61 000 m2. At the very heart of Marseille, near Place de la Joliette and 10 minutes on foot from
the Old Port, this shopping centre is open 7 days a week, with restaurant areas, places to walk
and relax, top-level retailers, an artistic visit and unique services.
As part of the biggest urban redevelopment project in the past few years in Europe, "Les
Terrasses du Port" is an essential element in the metamorphosis of Marseille.
- Les Voûtes. At the heart of a new cultural district around the Mucem, the Villa Méditerranée
and the Regards de Provence Museum, Les Voûtes was officially opened in September 2015.
Located under the Major Cathedral, its aim is to welcome the finest retailers and top-quality
restaurants serving Mediterranean specialities.
Les Voûtes also hosts the Halles de la Major. This is an original concept in Marseille, blending
an indoor food market (with 11 food stalls – fresh produce, meat, poultry, oysters, etc. to eat in
or take away) and a venue for festive events in the evening.
- Les Docks Village Marseille®.
At the heart of the Euroméditerranée district, the Docks building, an industrial site that has been
converted into offices and shops, completed its revolution on 10 October 2015, with 80 shops
and restaurants between the redesigned upper and lower ground floors. A trendy, festive and
friendly spot, with plenty of atypical shops, independent boutiques, creative artists and “made
in Marseille” brands.
- Le Prado.
In 2017, the Prado shopping centre will become part of a genuine urban project. Near the
Nouveau Stade Vélodrome and infrastructure such as the Exhibition Centre, the mall will be a
new contemporary landmark in Marseille.

disembarked on the Provence coast on 2 February, nearly 2000 years ago.
Bouillabaisse
This was originally a humble fishermen's dish that today is an integral part of French
gastronomy. The dish is served first as a soup, then as fish. But young chefs have no hesitation
reinterpreting the traditional recipe (bouillabaisse milkshake, bouillabaisse burger, etc.).
Marseille bouillabaisse should contain at least five kinds of fish from the following list:
rascasse baudroie (monkfish), - fielas (conger), weevers (alive) - chapon (red rascasse),
galinette (sea robin), Peter's fish, slipper lobster, rock lobster.
The Tourist and Congress Office organises "bouillabaisse lessons" in partnership with the
Miramar restaurant, whose chef, Christian Buffa, will reveal all his secrets for preparing the
number one Marseille speciality. www.resamarseille.com
Marseille under a starry sky...

the rock for 3 generations, since 1917, when Le Petit Nice was just an open-air café on
the Corniche! www.passedat.fr. The chef has also taken up the reins at the MUCEM
restaurants.
L’Epuisette (1 Michelin star) www.l-epuisette.com
At the heart of the Vallon des Auffes, beneath the Corniche, L'Epuisette provides a wonderful
view over the sea with the Frioul Islands on the horizon. Guillaume Sourrieu's cuisine is

Lionel Lévy, the Intercontinental restaurants' chef has just been awarded a star for "L’Alcyone"
to go with the one earned at his previous restaurant, "Une Table au Sud". His cuisine is in
permanent effervescence, rooted in the natural resources of the region, for creative menus that
are renewed in line with the seasons. Each of the culinary creations tells a story that is directly
inspired by the Mediterranean Sea.

The Chef, Ludovic Turac, was born in Marseille, and at 26, has become the youngest Michelinstarred chef in France. A former Top Chef candidate, he has spent time learning the classics of
French cuisine with Guy Savoy, Christophe Bacquié and Lionel Lévy. He underlines his
Marseille identity with his faultless and inventive cuisine.
Le AM (1 Michelin star) http://alexandremazzia.com/
Alexandre Mazzia settled in Marseille in 2009, after touring the world and working with some
of the great names in cooking (Hermé, Passard, Bras, Gagnaire, Martin Berasategui). His
cuisine is strongly influenced by a blend of cultures, particularly Africa, since he was born in
Congo and spent the first 14 years of his life on the continent.
His restaurant, with a capacity for 26 diners, blends wood and concrete, which he defines as
"Brutalist, refined, silky, organic", just like his cuisine.
2016 Michelin Guide "Plates"

The Gourméditerranée Association was created by chefs and restaurant owners in Marseille
and Provence with the aim of "promoting the expertise and the gastronomy of Marseille and
Provence".
Grouped around Gérald Passedat, Lionel Lévy and Guillaume Sourrieu (President, VicePresident and Treasurer), 40 chefs from in and around Marseille have got together. Some are
famous and have Michelin stars, others are less well known, but they are all in love with
"made in Marseille" cuisine, and have the same aim: enhance the region with a love of its
culture, ingredients and gastronomy.

The SudCrés Club was set up within the Gourmeditérranée Association at the initiative of
the prestigious chefs from the south of France Lionel Levy (L’Alcyone), Guillaume
Sourrieu (L‘Epuisette) and Gérald Passédat (Le Petit Nice). This is a kind of friendly club
with the aim of stimulating and motivating pastry chefs around a given theme and showing
the “sweet expertise” of southern chefs.
The "Street Food in Movement" association, presided by Thierry Marx and the organisers of
the RestoNouvo fair, Medexpo, got together to create the 1st Street Food International
Festival - SFIF at the Docks des Sud in Marseille in 2013.
One of Marseille's restaurants was awarded the "International Golden Street Food" prize by a
jury of cuisine professionals from France and abroad.
The team of La Boîte à Sardine restaurant has launched the innovative concept of the foodtruck.
The idea: fish & chips with a new look, with fried Mediterranean fish, panisses (local chips
coated with chickpea flour) and home-made aïoli, to enjoy on the go!
The pretty blue van criss-crosses the streets of Marseille and can be seen, above all, at cultural
events (concerts, festivals, etc.).
The city was already famous for its traditional travelling vans, recalling its cosmopolitan
origins:
The concept of the first wood-fired pizza truck is unique in the world and was invented in
Marseille by Jean Meritan in the 1970s.

NATURE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Water management
The city of Marseille has carried out an ambitious and radical policy for sustainable water
management. The water in Marseille is, in fact, considered "the best water in France". Since
1996, the headquarters of the World Water Council have been in Marseille, and the city was
chosen to organise the World Water Forum in March 2012, with over 10 000 specialists
attending.
The Harbour Management Plan, set up in 2006, enhances and preserves the water in Marseille
harbour with different measures:
• The 800-hectare Frioul Islands sea park has been listed as a Natura 2000 site.
• The creation of artificial reefs.
• Ecological anchoring and maritime beacon plan set up. www.marseille.fr
Calanques National Park
Famous all over the world for its breathtaking landscapes of limestone cliffs plunging down
into the sea and the Cosquer cave, the Calanques National Park also contains exceptional
biodiversity and cultural heritage.
On the outskirts of France's second biggest city, this natural monument is subject to a range of
pressures and risks that threaten its ecological equilibrium (concentrated and diffuse pollution,
massive visitor numbers at certain periods to some sites, excessive fishing, poaching, etc.).
The tenth biggest French national park, and the first in Europe to be both on land and sea,
covering islands and periurban areas, the Calanques National Park is a genuine project for
sharing the territory. This vision is given concrete form by the Park Charter, a clear project for
the area, setting out the goals to meet over the next 15 years.
The Charter was a result of the creation of the Calanques National Park (CNP) public authority,
supervised by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, and is applied
by the CNP and local authorities, by associating the area's stakeholders: inhabitants, businesses,
users, associations, etc.
The National Park's main aims are:





To protect the landscape and the natural and cultural heritage
To help raise awareness and face the major issues in the Mediterranean
To welcome visitors and transmit information
To keep activities under control and apply regulations
To encourage the development of sustainable tourism and help promote awareness
of the area, particularly through the launch of the "National Park Spirit" brand in 2015,
a measure promoting the national parks in France, and given to products and services
that respect the Park's heritage.
The biggest artificial reef in the Mediterranean.
At the heart of Prado Bay, 2 kilometres off the coast, covering a surface area of 200 hectares,
30 000 m3 of artificial reefs have been immersed at a depth of 30 metres. Since the final reef
was immersed, all fishing, diving and anchoring activities have been forbidden. From 2008, the
development of fauna and flora in this area has been seen, with such species as scorpion fish,
octopus and squid.
Underwater trails
38
In 2009, the city of Marseille decided to set up a network of underwater trails off its coastline,
to encourage visitors to explore the marine environment.
To provide this booming and environmentally friendly activity, several sites, including the
Frioul underwater path, have been selected all along the coast for their ecological value and/or
for their easy public access. The underwater paths are free and open to the public, and
associations specialised in the marine environment often accompany visits.
Bay Contract: the city of Marseille is preserving its coast and marine environment
The Bay Contracts originated as water-environment contracts. Their main aims are to undertake
concerted actions to preserve and restore the quality of water and of ecosystems.
After a preliminary diagnosis phase, the city of Marseille and its partners have drawn up a
programme of financially targeted actions over a 6-year period, with a list of the projects chosen
by those involved in the plan, the timetable and financing.
The Bay Contract includes 80 projects divided into 17 sections.
In the interests of coherence, it includes "the Conurbation Sanitation Contract" signed by the
MPM and the Water Agency in July 2014, and "the Huveaune River Contract", which was
signed in October 2015. The total investment of 265 million euros will lead to sustainable
improvement in the quality of water for swimmers and of the natural environment.

MARSEILLE for "MINOTS"
Minot (noun): (informal) small boy, child, kid, rug rat.
Marseille hasn't forgotten its "minots". A wide range of activities are on offer, thanks, in
particular, to the education department of the Marseille Museums, but also throughout the year
with the various theatre programmes on offer for young people (La Girafe, Le Badaboum,
Massalia, Le Têtard, le Divadlo, La Baleine Qui Dit "Vagues"…).
A museum specially designed for children: the Préau des Accoules, with events to tie in with
the exhibitions for the "grown ups". And they will also like: the Motor Bike Museum, the
Fashion Museum, the Natural History Museum, etc.
Sites to make life easier:
