December 2014 GlenLakes Italian Renaissance Club Columbus Day Dinner Gli Italiani sonno come festeggiare! Italians know how to celebrate! As we review the past month and our food time gatherings, we welcome two more new members, Judy and Butch Almstedt. We are happy you are now part of our community. With their membership, we are now 138 strong. What a wonderful tribute to our founders, Marianne and Joe Di Marco. I'm sure watching the growth and success of this club is like watching one of their children succeed; so we celebrate them and the success of our organization. continued on page 7 TABLE OF CONTENTS GlenLakes Italian Renaissance Club........Cover, 7 & 8 GlenLakes Upcoming Events .....................................3 GlenLakes Continuing Events ....................................5 Chef Mik’s Corner.......................................................6 GlenLakes Dress Code & Rules.................................6 Investment Club..........................................................8 Pickleball Update........................................................8 Garden Club .....................................................10 & 11 GlenLakes Scarlett Belles ........................................12 Sunday Football at the Clubhouse ...........................13 LifeSouth Blood Drive...............................................13 Kayak Club ...............................................................14 GlenLakes Men’s Golf Association...................15 & 16 Holiday House Tour Announcement .........................16 Holiday Food Drive ...................................................16 Awesome Drive-In Movie Night! ...............................17 Tennis Association............................................18 & 19 Friday Night Dinner at GlenLakes ............................20 Calendar...........................................................22 & 23 New Year’s Eve Celebration at GlenLakes...............24 Library Volunteers.....................................................25 Thank You’s ..............................................................25 GlenLakes Ladies’ Golf Association ....................26-28 GlenLakes Save The Date Ladies’ Member/Guest ..28 Singles Club.....................................................29 & 30 Breakfast with Santa.................................................31 Attention Dancers!....................................................32 Submarine Vets Christmas Party..............................32 bout A k s A tudio Our Scials! No Smoking In The Clubhouse 6 GlenLakes Italian Renaissance Club cont’d We celebrate too, Cristoforo Colombo, because with out the commemorating of his bold journey, we would not be celebrating with an annual dinner dance. The dinner dance, as always, was a huge success. About one hundred members were in attendance to celebrate our heritage and to coincidentally celebrate the 55th wedding anniversary of Amy and Joe Racioppo. God bless you in your marriage and thank you for being an example of a happy life together. The night was a joy filled occasion as many danced to the music of one of our favorite, Cover to Cover, bands and their great vocalists. Their style is easy comfortable to dance to and also provides easy listening. Our guest of honor, Barbara Sweinburg was presented a plaque, by our President Marie Franco, for her tireless efforts to the least fortunate of Hernando County. Once again, thank you Barbara for all you do. After whining "I never win anything" to those who would listen, yours truly was the winner of a beautiful basket of Italian delicacies prepared by the talented Joanne Reilly. All in all, it was a great evening of laughter, dancing and being with old and making new friends. Preparations are already underway for next year's event. We celebrate well! E vero! Our next celebration, this time of ourselves, was the annual Pizza Party held on the lawn near the Bocce Courts (how fitting) on October 30. What a day! Perfect weather, perfect pizza, perfect camaraderie and perfect desserts made this a memorable day. Kudos to Annette Davis and Amy Racioppo for soliciting desserts and to Barbara Ferraro who helped set up all the treats. By the way, we are still trying to determine who brought the wonderful chocolate cake bars with the coconut on top. Yum! I am very proud to be part of the IRC as we attempt to share our traditions of openness, friendship and welcoming all to our tables and our lives. Let's look forward to the Christmas Dinner Dance on December 9th here at GlenLakes. A great deal of work has already gone into the event and with the music of Southern Exposure featuring our own talented Vince Ferraro on the drums, it promises to be a gala affair. For now, many blessings for a happy, joyous, peaceful holiday season and best wishes for a happy, healthy new year. Per ora, molte benedizioni per una felice, gioioso e sereno natale e auguri di un felice anno nuovo e sano. As there were no nominations from the floor, the candidates were unanimously elected and will be installed at the January business meeting. In the interim, Amanda Venn submitted her resignation due to employment commitments. According to the By-Laws, the Board appoints a member to fill a vacant position. The Board is pleased to announce that Joy Holme has agreed to fill the role of treasurer for 2015. The Succulent Workshop was held at the home of Gail Anderson on November 14th. With approximately 40 members ready to “dish the dirt”, it's sure to have been an interesting morning. Watch for all of the details in the next issue of The Eagle. By Marita Hickey “Friends are flowers in life's garden”. GlenLakes On October 17th, seventy friends Garden Club came together to joyfully celebrate the 20th anniversary of the GlenLakes Garden Club with a delicious brunch in our beautifully decorated clubhouse dining room. The event, chaired by Chris Tharp, proved to be a fun-filled morning, the highlight of which was a slide-show presentation of the history of the club through the years. From its humble beginnings, the vision of a small group of residents, the club continued to grow around a central interest in gardening and a love of plants and flowers. The Garden Club took on a philanthropic component with the addition of a scholarship to be awarded annually to a local high school senior and with the support of local charitable endeavors. Currently there are one hundred eight members who belong to the Garden Club because of its gardening theme, charitable giving, scholarship, or because they just enjoy having fun with their Garden Club friends. We thank our club's founders for starting the club and the Anniversary Committee for honoring the work of so many women, and some important men, for their tireless efforts in keeping the dreams alive. At the brunch it was announced that our fall charity would be The Closet of Hope whose mission is helping needy children and families in time of lifealtering events through the distribution of clothing and other life-sustaining items to aid recipients in getting their lives back on course for a future of success. Representing The Closet of Hope was Shanika Rodriguez, Hernando County School District's Student and Families in Transition Liaison, McKinney-Vento Homeless Education. She stressed the need for donations of clothing, shoes, personal care items as well as non-perishable food items and gift cards to Save-A-Lot grocery. With over 200 homeless children in the Hernando School District, Closet of Hope is grateful for all of the donations they receive. Please be generous in your giving. It's been said, “It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” All donations can be dropped off at the homes of Ann Frankel, Sue Chapin, or Nancy Fish. The deadline for donations is December 12th. Representing the Nomination Committee, Gloria Allison presented the following slate of officers for 2015: President: Gail Anderson; Vice-President: Helen Connors; Secretary: Chris Tharp: Treasurer: ITEMS ADVERTISED (INCLUDING INSERTS) ARE SUBJECT TO THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF GLMHA. We have lots to do and we are having a great time doing everything. We started in September with our Tea Luncheon. On Halloween we held our Witches Brew at the Club with chef Mik entertaining us with a ghoulish demonstration of what we were about to eat, such as Seared Wolfish Filet with Eye Balls Butter Sauce and Crispy Fried Catfish Whiskers. Yummy! In actuality the entire meal was quite delicious. We all dressed as witches and gathered around chef in true coven fashion. We played some games and enjoyed the company of one another. A prize was bestowed on the best in witches costume. That honor went to Lya Christie. Please see photos below. The next outing is scheduled for November 13th, our trip to Mt. Dora. Update and photos will be provided in the next Eagle article. Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 13, 2014 for the 2:00 p.m. matinee performance of The Nunsense Christmas Musical - "NUNCRACKERS" at Stage West Community Theatre. Stay tuned for upcoming events scheduled for 2015. On a sad note, homage is due to those Scarlett Belles who are no longer with us. This year we lost Susan Sale, Joan McDonald (Past Queen), Carolyn Sogal, Eileen Gagliano and most recently Jan Albrecht (Queen Mum 2012 - present. All lovely ladies will be sorely missed. Witches Brew Halloween Party! Red Hat Tribute to Jan Albrecht It is with great sadness that we remember the loss of our beloved "sister" Jan. She was our Queen Mum and a beautiful lady both inside and out. Keeping Jan in our thoughts, The Scarlett Belles would like to share the following sentiments. A precious one from us has gone. A voice we love is still. A place is vacant in our hearts which no one else can fill. After all the heartache and our silent tears, We will always have beautiful memories of the one we loved so dear. ~ Author unknown ITEMS ADVERTISED (INCLUDING INSERTS) ARE SUBJECT TO THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF GLMHA. President's Corner So another year is slipping away and yet another opportunity to lower our handicaps is wasted. Better luck next tear! However, in 2014 the GLMGA has had a banner year. Our just completed “Classic”, the Member-Guest tournament has again been a huge success under the capable hands of tournament director Doyle Hill and his Committee. The normal tournament schedule throughout the year was rejuvenized with help of Tom Wilson. Our Association has worked with the GLLGA and the GlenLakes Staff to help improve play and course conditions. The singlualr new twist to our play has been the advent of the Gold/White tee options initiated by Chuck Jennkins and which was approved by the USGA. This has proved to be a very popular alternate for our members. Speaking of Chuck, we thank him for three productive years as our Secretary and wish him well. As I finish my year as President, I would like to thank everyone for their input and who supported the Association and hope you have enjoyed your golf here at GlenLakes. The GLMGA is for here to support all members and to try to help make your golfing here the best it can be. See you on the course, good golfing! Course Care With the welcome return of our Northern friends, the golf course is experiencing a much higher play count. Please remember the usual playing etiquette routines; repairing ball marks on the greens, filling all divots near your shot, raking traps for those who “forgot” and particularly in the winter, Scattering your driving pattern when nearing the end of the GLMGA Annual Event The annual GLMGA Golf Tournament followed by heavy appetizers and the annual meeting is again being planned for January 28. Wikipedia's Definition: Pickleball is a sport in which two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children's backyard pastime but quickly became popular among adults as a fun game for players of all skill levels. Most of the excitement is from our aging population that is experiencing diminished mobility and reaction times. The smaller court area and lighter ball makes it easier to have quickened success with little effort. And yes….there is no brushing and flossing when you finish because it is played on a HARD COURT. But just wait a second….that is why playing tennis at GlenLakes is so nice. We play on a SOFT (Har-Tru) Court. It is provides us with cooler playing conditions. The court surface is softer and there is less pounding and jarring on the knees and hips. The tennis ball moves slower on clay court surfaces. And God forbid…if you accidently fall...it isn't as hard or harmful to your bones. A somewhat recent change in Junior Tennis could hold the solution to our aging population. Great success and FUN for Junior Players have been achieved with the new graduated tennis court size and ball using either foam or oversized red, regular sized orange or green; all slower low compression balls. What makes tennis fun is being able to rally a ball back and forth over a net with a partner. So that's it. “Honey…I shrunk the court” ....and I have these low compression tennis balls to go with it!! Voila…..You can play tennis on a shorter court, low compression balls, use your regular tennis racquet, your official USTA Tennis Rules and scoring, sustaining heated rallies and LIFE IS GOOD! You don't have to give up tennis….you just need to know that there is a solution out there and it is becoming popular with our older (but young at heart) crowd. Contact me if you are interested in learning more about how to set up a court (takes only minutes) at GlenLakes Tennis Center to play. I would be happy to help you. I do it every week when I work with the youngest of tennis players, ages 3 and up. I have all the equipment and balls. I also sell these items. If you By Judy Jeanette, Director of Tennis and USPTA Elite Professional Merry Christmas Tennis Members and GL Residents!! I wish everyone a joyous and peaceful holiday season. We have much to be thankful for. Isn't it wonderful to live in GlenLakes where you find great friends, great tennis and all with a beautiful community and surroundings. Tennis Food for Thought If a tennis ball hits or lands on any part of the line…you must play it because it is GOOD. • If you see your partner make a mistake…you MUST correct it. • If you cannot make a call because you are unsure whether the ball was good or out…you must call it GOOD. • If one partner says out and the other partner says it was in….you must call it GOOD. • You may not enlist the help of spectators and spectators should not get involved in lines calls. • You may enlist the help of your opponents to help with a call. If a player asked you, the opponent, whether you saw the shot… and if you clearly saw it out…you are obligated under the USTA Official Rules of Tennis to make an out call against yourself. Yep…that's the rule. ; ) Tis the Season…. …to play more tennis. The weather is amazing and the holidays are sneaking up on us. Maybe you should consider changing or upgrading your equipment. This could be the perfect Christmas present for yourself or loved one. I have many of the new models of the most popular tennis racquets for you to test drive. Playing with a DEMO is the only way to know for sure if the racquet will be your baby or an evil relative. You can take your time with your selection process, have it custom fitted, and have professional advice from your tennis expert….all this with BELOW internet pricing. Save your money… shop at Judy's Strings & Things Pro Shop (And please…stay away from Sports UNAuthority). If you want to get a tennis present…but you are not sure what to buy….then purchase a “GIFT CERTIFICATE” from Judy and use the certificate towards tennis gear, equipment or instruction. It is the perfect solution to a holiday present conundrum. Oh yeah…..I can supply PICKLEBALL paddles and equipment, too. continue to next page ITEMS ADVERTISED (INCLUDING INSERTS) ARE SUBJECT TO THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF GLMHA. Sounds like torture to me, but she must enjoy that sort of thing. She's taken several hiking vacations since I met her in 2002. WOW!!!! Has it been that long? Time really does fly. Since nearly all my summer tennis in Oregon was played indoors on hard courts (my poor knees,) I've had to readjust to the sun, wind, and the softer surface here in GlenLakes. These courts definitely slow the ball down and give the player just a tiny bit more time to react. Since we are all getting slower as we age, these courts help us “old” folks stay in the game. Okay. Sorry. I'm just calling myself old not any of the rest of you. It was good to get back out there and see all you “young” people again. It has actually been years not months since some of us have played tennis together. Let's not let that much time go by again before we meet on the courts. Have a Merry Christmas and hopefully we have all finished their Christmas shopping. Oops, I haven't even started yet. Amazon here I come. Keep hitting that little yellow ball. have a tennis racquet…all you need are the balls. You will be back on the SOFT TENNIS COURTS and playing like you never believed you could play again. Go for it !! FYI Your GL Tennis Professional was coached by “Mister Pickleball” a Senior National Level Pickleball competitor. I met Mister Pickleball in New Hampshire a few summers ago. He lived and played in the community I was visiting in Woodstock. I spent a few days playing with his gang. I picked it up very quickly and kicked some pickleball butt. I still like tennis better. There is more to tennis and it continues to challenge me both physically and mentally. Tennis News from GlenLakes Roving Reporter: Velma George Summer zipped by, then came Halloween, Thanksgiving, and soon it will be Christmas. The Snow Birds are back and the tennis courts are busy. It's good to be back and playing on our magnificent courts. Auggie worked hard in October and November to resurface them. That's backbreaking work to deal with the many 80 pound bags of material used to resurface the courts. We owe Auggie a big “Thank you”. U S A TREE SERVICE LLC Happy Holiday s! The Tilelli's and the Faulk families wish to thank you and your staff for a job well done. The tables were decorated beautifully and the service was great. Everyone raved about the food Chef Mik out did himself again. We even had the pleasure of sharing our joy with neighbors who were celebrating Halloween at the club. Thank you all for the good wishes and blessings. “Thank you to GlenLakes residents for your continued support of our community library. Your donations, help in keeping the library neat and orderly, and always allowing the volunteers to reshelve the books is greatly appreciated. We welcome your donations of current hardbound, paperback, and large print books in good condition, current magazines, and AudioBooks on CD. The library has fiction, non-fiction and an extensive biography section. There is something for every reader.” The Library Volunteers want to thank Connie Dietrick for her more than seven years of service to the library. Her time and talents have served the library well and she will be missed. In November we welcomed Gerry Morrone to the volunteer group. GlenLakes Library Volunteers: Heloise Crowell, Marita Hickey, Margie Parker, Ann Sick, Jane Telander, and Raye Wentworth. Questions and/or comments can be communicated to any of the volunteers. Rochelle and John Tilelli To Chef Mik and staff Thank you Chef Mik for a wonderful dinner that was served on October 31st in Sand Hill Crane Room for our grandson's rehearsal dinner. I heard nothing but how great the food was, and it was. Thank you again and God Bless. Rochelle and John Tilelli Recently, both Amy and I ended up as patients in the hospital at the same time. Thank goodness for our friends and neighbors here in GlenLakes! They came to our rescue with food, cards, prayers, hospital visits, walkers, a ride to the emergency room and even sat with us at the hospital during the surgeries. I am sure they all gained new insight on how to hit out of bunkers. President's Message By Honora Browne For the past year I have had the privilege of being the President of the GLLGA. I sincerely appreciate the support I have received from the members of the Association and especially from my Executive Board and Committee chairwomen. I thank each and every one of you for helping to make this a wonderful experience for me. We instituted many new ideas and I want to thank Tom and Kathy in the pro shop for assisting us all year in undertaking some new endeavors. The clinics that Tom put on for us on putting, chipping, pitching and sand play were all outstanding and I have received many positive comments from our members on how much they learned from these clinics. Thanks Tom for helping to make us better golfers with your excellent instruction. I hope that the new Tournament committee will continue to present clinics next year. Thanks Kathy for assisting us each Thursday in our weekly and tournament play. We appreciate all your efforts to make Ladies Day organized and fun. I also want to thank Dottie Haney, our Rules Chair, who with the help of Judy Voiers and Judy Potter put together a great Rules Clinic in March. They covered rules around the green and in the sand, relief from a water hazard and how to get relief from cart paths. It was outstanding and I know everyone who attended learned a lot. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly elected Executive Board for 2016: Mary Vuolo, President; Sandy O'Dell, Vice President; Judy Potter, Secretary and Jessie Helton, Treasurer. I know these ladies will continue to keep the GLLGA one of the best associations here at GlenLakes. Good luck to all of you. Hope to see all of you at the Opening Day luncheon on January 8, 2015. In the meantime have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Here are a few photos from the recent Sand clinic which Tom ran on October 30th. The good news is we have a nice pool of money to pay for the upcoming Christmas party on December 12th (free for all paid members). Judy reported for the nominating committee which included Rose and Sandi. They were able to contact all members and in addition to securing volunteers to cover the 2015 officer positions, they were able to garner comments and suggestions to assist us in having a great new year ahead! After announcing the candidate names, members were given an opportunity to suggest alternate members. As there were no nominations from the floor, there was a unanimous vote to accept the slate as presented. And now (may I have a drum roll please) here are the electees: Treasurer: Bob (Robert E.) Lee Secretary: Carol Sachs (following an outstanding year as the same) Vice President/Chairperson for Events: Janet (Sunshine) DeVico and President: (tahdah) Dona Gilbody The formal election will be held at our December 2nd meeting. Approving the slate will require confirmation of at least two-thirds of the paid membership. If you are unable to attend the meeting, we kindly request that you submit your acceptance of the slate by a proxy vote to one of the current officers. In our business meeting, Janet reported sending two get well cards. Kathie informed us of a list of many local vendors which allow discounts to seniors. See Kathie for a copy of the list. Several membesr volunteered to accept committee positions. Evelyn advised that she is unable to continue as the Eagle reporter. A replacement is urgently requested! GlenLakes Singles Club cont’d indicated that she will continue to maintain the membership roster unless someone would like to assume that responsibility. Mickey Smith has volunteered to handle the monthly 50/50 drawings. George was commended for doing a fantastic job in handling the Tuesday “nights out” dining reservations and driver assignments. Rose won the 50/50 drawing which she immediately donated to a local charity. Polly Dougan reported on the successful outings during October including the fabulous 10th Annual “Lobster Fest” at Kathie’s, check out the photos. November and December activities are sure to be enjoyed also. Be sure to check out our activity postings at the mail kiosks. We will update you in the next Eagle report. Michael W. Higgins, DO, PA Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery “Throughout my surgical experience Dr. Higgins continued to be compassionate and patient oriented. While in the pre-op waiting room he visited with me and my husband. He put us at ease assuring my husband that he would come into the waiting room to speak to him as soon as the procedure was complete. He was at my side in the operating room as the anesthesiologist put me to sleep. I stayed in the hospital four days. Dr. Higgins came to check on my progress every day.” – Kristin J.S.
