Dr. Mark Heiner and Melissa Tharpe, Nurse Practitioner stand among the construction of the administration area of their new office. The project is scheduled
for completion in mid January of 2010. Due to increasing patient load, Elkin Obstetrics and Gynecology is
moving to a larger facility. The move will not be very far,
just across the parking lot from the current office at
Claremont Medical Center. Elkin Obstetrics and Gyne-
cology has experienced tremendous success and welcomes the opportunity to accommodate their patients
with additional exam rooms and two large procedure
rooms. The new address will be 101-A Eldon Parks Dr.

Sew Welcome has Grand Opening
Sew Welcome had a soft opening on the rainy
morning of the Pumpkin Festival and we are thrilled
by the response from the community and extended
areas. We were surprised at the response from nonquilters but shouldn't have been as everyone seems to
have had a close family member that is or was a quilter. There is such an appreciation for the art form!
The old quilts were made strictly for warmth using
whatever fabrics were available, such as worn clothing
and even feed sacks. It's amazing to see the care that
went into them to make them pleasing to the eye as
well. Of course, now we have quilters that are able to
put together quilts from a vast array of fabric that is
being manufactured just for Quilters to last the test of
time.
This is the reason we wanted to open a quilt
shop....you have to go so far for this nice fabric and it
cuts into your sewing time! For a Quilter, going into
a fabric shop is akin to a kid going into a candy shop
and seeing all the jars of candy and trying to decide
how much of each one they can take home. The rows
of bolts of fabric are our weakness and it's so hard to
pick just the right ones.....unlike the candy shop where
tasting is frowned upon - touching and caressing the
fabric is widely accepted. We aren't a full service Quilt
Shop yet but come watch us grow! We are happy to
showcase and help the local quilters sell their work.
Although the shop appears to be quite small from
the outside, there is more to be seen once you pass
through our "Living Room". Down the hall we have
a large gallery with quite a mixture of quilts - Cathedral Window, Churn Dash, Tossed 9 Patch, Blooming
9 Patch, Applique'. We enjoy listening to visitors point
out the patterns they're familiar with and it's interest-

in Downtown Elkin.
ing to see which ones they select as their favorites.
There's something for everyone. The newer ones are
all machine pieced and quilted and the older ones
made locally in the 30's and 40's are machine pieced
and hand quilted in Lonestar and a unique T pattern
rarely seen - even in the new quilts. We also have a
room with various items made by our local quilters.
We have even recently received just over 20 bolts of
fabric on consignment so we are now able to offer
some fabric locally. We will be offering quilting classes
after the first of the year.
We have a working studio at the shop where you'll
find us in the midst of several projects - so please excuse the mess in this area. There is also a room that
we keep open for members of the Foothills Quilters
to drop by and "Sit and Sew". Right now we're working on quilts to be given out as gifts for Christmas at
The Ark and are very proud to say that we will be able
to meet their immediate need through donations of
fabric that have been received. However, if you have
cotton, flannel or fleece fabric you would like to donate it will be used strictly for these charitable "comfort" quilts - the Foothills Quilters guild has donated
over 60 comfort quilts during 2009 alone.
Of course a must see is our "Tie Room". Did you
know That men's neckties can make a lovely quilt?
Drop by and we'll gladly give you a tour ! Come take
a look, and you, too, will be pleasantly surprised - and
"Sew Welcome" to come back again and again. We're
open Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 am until 3:00
pm. (336)258-2441Lenoir, North Wilkesboro, Sparta

which had the altitude, aspect and air flow
needed to maximize nature’s assistance with humidity and the potential for severe frost. In 2004
they found that land in an old farm property for
sale which they purchased on Highway 268 in
Surry County just east of Elkin. They carefully
studied grape varieties for wine production and,
in support of their goal of organic production,
chose those which were either native to the region (eg Carlos, Noble, Doreen and Cynthiana/Norton) or hybrids known to be disease
tolerant (e.g. Traminette, Chambourcin and Rubiana.)
While clearing and planting their vineyard, the
Colwells both completed the Viticulture and
Enology Degree program at Surry Community
College and honed their skills by producing
award-winning wines for personal consumption.
Along with grapes, the Colwells planted an acre
and a half of blueberries and built hives for their
honey bees – with the plan that all would be
sources for the wines and meads to come from
Carolina Heritage Winery. They also planted
apple trees, pear trees, cranberries, elderberries,
raspberries and kiwi plants as candidates for future fruit wines. They inoculated shitake mushroom logs which grow in their woods and raised
chickens and guineas for insect control in the
vineyard.
In 2008, three years after planting their first
vines, the Colwells’ vineyard became the first in
North Carolina, and one of a very small number
in the Southeast, to be Certified Organic by the
USDA. In September 2009 the newly-completed
environmentally-friendly winery at Carolina
Heritage went through its own organic certification inspection – required for the Colwells to be
able to produce organic wines and “wines made
from organic fruit” which they are now doing
with their 2009 harvest.
The Colwells have a strong sense of community
and a desire to do what they can to help keep
their local community strong. As a part of North
Carolina’s Agri-Tourism map, the Colwells’ vineyard has always been open to families, many of
whom have stopped over the last couple of years
with their children to discuss organic farming
and growing grapes with the Colwells and/or to
have the experience of helping harvest the grapes
by hand. The Colwells have willingly stopped
what they were doing to have the opportunity to
help others understand that organic farming,
while often demanding, is very possible and very
rewarding.
Besides offering wines in their tasting room, the
Colwells have opened it up to local artisans and
musicians. In November they initiated a regular
Old Time Bluegrass jam session every Saturday
afternoon from 1PM to 4PM, fondly called
“Burch Station Bluegrass” (from the name of an
historic railroad stop, “Burch Station”, located on
the lower side of the Colwells’ property,) as a way
to help promote local musicians and for the general public to enjoy at no charge.
And, starting in December, they will be carrying local pottery and juried crafts for sale in the
tasting room in support of the Yadkin Valley
Craft Guild. In addition they plan to begin hosting periodic demonstrations by the local artisans
themselves, starting in February, to help promote
local artisans and crafts.
Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery is located at 170 Heritage Vines Way (on Highway
268 – 0.8 mile east of the intersection of CC
Camp Road/268-Bypass and Highway 268.)
Tasting room hours are Saturdays and Sundays
from 1PM to 6PM and by appointment by calling (336) 366-3301. More information on Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery products and

Carolina Heritage Vineyards was established in
2005 by Clyde and Patricia Colwell on a 35-acre
farm on Highway 268 three miles east of Elkin,
NC in the middle of the Yadkin Valley Viticultural Area.
Clyde Colwell grew up in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State where he was surrounded
by beautiful vineyards. To someday have his own
farm was a dream that Clyde carried throughout
his successful career as a teacher, school principal and Superintendent of Schools. In 2000,
Clyde enrolled in the then-new Viticulture and

and knew almost immediately that he wanted to
grow grapes on his farm.
Patricia Colwell grew up in northern Wisconsin, in the midst of dairy and potato farms. As
she neared the end of a successful career as an
IBM software executive, Pat had a strong desire
to do something which would give back to the
world. A fondness for growing things led her to
enroll in an Environmental Horticulture program from which she gained a passion to grow
things in concert with nature. Clyde was very
supportive and together they ventured forth with
the goal of growing grapes and berries organically for wine production in North Carolina.

In 2000,
Clyde enrolled in the then-new Viticulture and
Enology Program at Surry Community College
and knew almost immediately that he wanted to
grow grapes on his farm.
The Colwells spent a year looking for land
which had the altitude, aspect and air flow
needed to maximize nature’s assistance with humidity and the potential for severe frost. In 2004
they found that land in an old farm property for
sale which they purchased on Highway 268 in
Surry County just east of Elkin.
More information on Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery products and
events can be found at www.carolinaheritagevineyards.com

We enjoy listening to visitors point
out the patterns they're familiar with and it's interest-

ing to see which ones they select as their favorites.
Did you
know That men's neckties can make a lovely quilt?

counties since 1911.
In 2000,
Clyde enrolled in the then-new Viticulture and
Enology Program at Surry Community College
and knew almost immediately that he wanted to
grow grapes on his farm.

In 2000,
Clyde enrolled in the then-new Viticulture and
Enology Program at Surry Community College
and knew almost immediately that he wanted to
grow grapes on his farm.
The Colwells spent a year looking for land

We enjoy listening to visitors point
out the patterns they're familiar with and it's interest-

ing to see which ones they select as their favorites.
We're
open Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 am until 3:00
pm. (336)258-2441Lenoir, North Wilkesboro, Sparta
and West Jefferson.
