Idaho is home to about 120 golf
courses — many of them unique,
challenging and charming. Some Gem
State links are nationally acclaimed while
others are off the beaten path and cater
more to local enthusiasts than out-oftown visitors.
This new episode of OUTDOOR
IDAHO takes a closer look at Idaho
Fairways as the show’s producers drive,
pitch, and putt their way across the Gem
State and visit some of its not-so-famous
golf courses.
“Some say golf is like life. Others
say, no, it’s more complicated than that,”
jokes host Bruce Reichert. “Whatever
your take on the game, somewhere in
Idaho there’s a golf course just for you.”
The show takes viewers to several
Idaho links, including Plantation in

As DIALOGUE gears up for a new
season, the show’s producers are asking
viewers for their input in an online survey.
The survey is designed to help Idaho Public
Television determine viewer preferences in
the show’s content and format as well as its
various broadcast/delivery services.
“Since 1994 DIALOGUE has offered
viewers the opportunity to call in to our
show with their opinions on various topics,”
says associate producer Melanie Corry. “As
we enter our 17th season, we’re turning the
tables a bit and asking them to give us their
opinion, not on the news of the day, but on
DIALOGUE itself. Should the show keep
its call-in feature? What topics are important
to them?”
According to Corry, the survey results
will help her and hosts Joan Cartan-Hansen

Boise, which dates back to 1916 and by
most accounts is the first golf course in
the state. Other courses featured include
Twin Falls’ Canyon Springs, Ashton’s
Aspen Acres, Wilder’s River Bend,
the Orofino Golf & Country Club, and
Bonners Ferry’s Mirror Lake.
“It was hard to pick which courses to
include in the show; there are so many
gorgeous ones in Idaho,” says producer
Sauni Symonds. “We decided to focus
on the unique and/or scenic hometown
courses in different parts of the state. It
was a lot of fun meeting the locals, and
of course, we had to play the courses.”

and Marcia Franklin identify the most
popular topics discussed on DIALOGUE
and consider what additional issues the
public affairs show should address during
the upcoming season.
The survey can be accessed at http://
idahoptv.org/dialogue.
This season’s premiere on September 2
discusses the Idaho Republican Party’s vote
during its 2010 state convention to repeal the
17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,
which gives voters the right to elect their
own U.S. senators.
Supporters and opponents of the Idaho
GOP’s recent vote discuss the issue with
Cartan-Hansen. She is joined by state
Representative Pete Nielsen, R-Mountain
Home; state Senator Elliot Werk, D-Boise;
and David Adler, director of the University
of Idaho’s James A. and Louise McClure
Center for Public Policy Research.
In 1787, George Mason called on his
fellow delegates at the Constitutional
Convention to let state legislators elect
U.S. senators as a check on the new federal
government. Mason’s idea prevailed and for
more than 100 years as voters elected their
U.S. representatives and state legislators
elected U.S. senators.
But in the early 1900s, U.S. Senator
William Borah of Idaho sponsored efforts
to reform the Constitution and called for the
direct election of U.S. senators. In 1913 the
United States adopted the 17th Amendment,
which called for senators to be elected by
popular vote.

Cat in the Hat Joins Kids’Line-Up;
Other Changes Begin in September
A children’s favorite for more than 50 years,
The Cat in the Hat, created by Dr. Seuss in 1957,
comes to television in an animated series for the first
time this month.
THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT
ABOUT THAT! premieres with two 30-minute
episodes Monday, September 6, at 8:30/7:30
a.m. MT/PT to celebrate Labor Day. The series,
regularly scheduled weekdays at 8:30/7:30
a.m. MT/PT and 1:00 p.m./12:00 noon MT/PT,
whisks young viewers off on a voyage of scientific
discovery and is based on The Cat in the Hat’s
Learning Library book series.
The show features 6-year-olds Sally and Nick,
best friends and next-door neighbors, who are
transported on magical journeys to all corners of
the globe where the natural world becomes their
playground. Their guide is the mischievous Cat in
the tall, red and white-striped hat and red bowtie.
He is accompanied by the zany duo of Thing One
and Thing Two, and their enigmatic Fish. Actor/
comedian Martin Short is the voice of The Cat.
To make room for The Cat in the Hat and
his cartoon sidekicks, SID THE SCIENCE KID
moves to 11:00/10:00 a.m. MT/PT, beginning
September 6, with CLIFFORD THE BIG RED
DOG airing once daily at 6:30/5:30 a.m. MT/PT. THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT
ABOUT THAT! also airs Sundays, beginning
September 12, at 8:00/7:00 a.m. MT/PT, replacing
DINOSAUR TRAIN, which continues to
air weekdays at 9:30/8:30 a.m. MT/PT.
4
(DRAGON TALES leaves the schedule, beginning
Wednesday, September 1.)
In other news for children’s programming,
CURIOUS GEORGE — weekdays at 8:00/7:00
a.m. MT/PT — premieres three new shows this
month on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
September 6, 7 and 8. In the opening episode,
George and his musical friend Marco look for a new
home for a Latin band in the first segment while
George becomes surrogate mother to a duckling in
the second segment. Additional new episodes air in
February, April and May.
SUPER WHY! presents a new episode Monday,
September 13, with others to follow in October and
November.
SESAME STREET begins its 41st season
Monday, September 27, at 10:00/9:00 a.m. MT/
PT. The new episodes emphasize everyday science
investigation in street stories, animations and new
live action films, such as Elmo and his friends
learning about camouflage by finding six things that
blend with the scenery. A new segment in six shows,
features Super Grover 2.0 as he stumbles across
scientific solutions to problems across the planet.
Celebreties to watch for include Kyra Sedgwick,
Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner and Jason
Bateman; also NFL superstars Reggie Bush and
LaDainian Tomlinson. And there are new
parodies and new original animations.

Weighs In on New Season with ‘Gravity’
Airs Tuesday, September 21, at 2:00/1:00 p.m. MT/PT
With several major awards to its credit
for its 2009 programming, D4K embarks
on its 12th season this month. Beginning
September 21 with its show on Gravity, the
Idaho Public Television-produced science
show for grade-school students airs the
third Tuesday of each month at 2:00/1:00
p.m. MT/PT during the academic year. (The
December show will air the second Tuesday
of that month so it can be viewed before
students begin holiday vacations.)
As always, leading scientists from various
fields join host Joan Cartan-Hansen as they
share their expertise. Gravity, the topic of
the first show, is a fundamental force of
nature. All objects with mass have gravity,
but what is gravity exactly? Boise State
engineering students who are conducting
microgravity experiments in cooperation
with NASA will join Cartan-Hansen to
answer questions emailed or called in by
young viewers.

AMERICAN MASTERS presents backto-back specials on two legendary Latino
artists.
First, at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT (see it in
HD at 7:00/6:00 and 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/
PT) Cachao: Uno Mas premieres with an
in-depth celebration of the Father of the
Mambo, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, who died
March 2008. Narrated and produced by
actor Andy Garcia, this film examines the

remarkable life from Lopez’s childhood in
Cuba, to his early career in America, to his
resurgence in the 1990s. The documentary
is told through performances and interviews
with the Grammy-winning bassist himself,
Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Arturo Sandoval
and many others who shed light on Cachao’s
near nine-decade contribution to world
music.
The show is followed at 10:30 p.m. MT/
PT by Orozco: Man of Fire, a look at the
late José Clemente Orozco, the Mexican
social realist painter, who specialized in bold
murals that helped established the Mexican
Mural Renaissance. His bold, dynamic
frescoes had a profound impact on American
painters and inspired President Franklin
Roosevelt to put artists to work during the
Great Depression.

Week of September 1-4, 2010
AS I REMEMBER: AMERICAN
VETERANOS on Tuesday, September 28,
at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT.
This new documentary examines the
steep personal toll and enduring legacy
of the Vietnam War on three artists from
south Texas: visual artist Juan Farias, author
Michael Rodriguez and actor/poet Eduardo
Garza.
Through the personal histories and
experiences of these Chicano veterans,
the film examines the role art plays in the
sorting of memories, post-traumatic stress
disorder, activism and the current conflict
in Iraq. AS LONG AS I REMEMBER
chronicles their upbringing in the MexicanAmerican community, their military service
in Vietnam, and their lives after the war.

Off and Running
September’s offerings from the
independent film series with a “point
of view” chronicle the complexities of
interracial and international adoption.
Off and Running (September 7) is
about Brooklyn teenager Avery, a track
star with a bright future. She is the
adopted African-American child of white
Jewish lesbians. Her older brother is
black and Puerto Rican and her younger
brother is Korean. Though it may not look
typical, Avery’s household is like most
American homes — until Avery writes to
her birth mother. The response throws her
into crisis. She struggles over her “true”
identity, the circumstances of her adoption
and her estrangement from black culture.
In The Matter of Cha Jung Hee
(September 14) tells the story of a Korean
adoptee who came to the United States
in 1966. Her passport said she was Cha
Jung Hee, but she knew she was not that
person. So began a 40-year deception.
Told to keep her true identity secret from
her new American family, the 8-year-old
girl quickly forgot she had ever been
anyone else. But why had her identity
been switched? This film by director
Deann Borshay Liem is the search to find
the answers as the main character returns
to her native Korea to find her “double,”
the mysterious girl whose place she took
in America.
The Oath (September 21) interweaves
the stories of Abu Jandal, Osama bin
Laden’s former bodyguard, and Salim
Hamdan, a prisoner at Guantánamo facing
war crimes charges. The show is filmed in
Yemen and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

This PBS documentary chronicles
the life and legend of Marie-Joseph Paul
Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis
de Lafayette. An intriguing, neglected,
and controversial figure from both the
American and French revolutions, he was
at one time the most famous man in the
world.
The film examines why a wealthy
young French aristocrat would leave the
comforts of the court to help a fledgling
nation on another continent fight for
independence. It also examines the nature
of the daring path he then set upon, and
how the concept of liberty steered so many
choices in his life.
Lafayette’s life and quest to bring
democracy to America and France
is shared, in part, as recorded in the
extensive letters and memoirs of Lafayette;
his wife, Adrienne de Noailles; and his
close friend, George Washington.
The documentary’s narrative is
also driven by a present-day search by
Lafayette’s descendant, Sabine RenaultSabloniere, to find out more about her
ancestor. She uncovers the largely untold
story of Lafayette’s wife, second daughter
of the Duke de Noailles, and the arranged
marriage that turned into a great romance
and a partnership in revolution.

This PBS special chronicles the rise and
fall of Spain’s global empire from the reign
of Isabel and Ferdinand through the reign of
Philip II.
Hosted by journalist Ruben Martinez,
this 90-minute documentary explores how
the collision of the Old World and the New
World completely transformed the nature of
ethnicity and identity in the Americas.
Directed and produced by Carl Byker,
this documentary analyzes the origins of
today’s Latino culture through the largely
untold story of the Americas after Columbus.
The journey begins on the streets of Los
Angeles in 2010 and travels to Spain and
Latin America, where contact first occurred
between Spanish conquistadors and native
peoples.
The era created radical change in
both worlds, resulting in an entirely new
“mestizo” or mixed culture — an important
part of the heritage of more than 30 million
Latinos in the United States today.
Airs Tuesday, September 28, and Wednesday, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT

Filmmaker Ken Burns picks up where his landmark 1994
series BASEBALL left off with this two-part, four-hour
documentary. The film explores the rise of Latino and Asian
players, the impact of performance-enhancing drugs, the new
chapter of the Yankee dynasty, and the historic World Series
victories of the Boston Red Sox.
THE TENTH INNING tells the story of America’s national
pastime from the early 1990s to the present day, introducing
an unforgettable array of players, teams and fans. It celebrates
the game’s resilience and enduring appeal, and showcases
extraordinary accomplishments — and devastating losses and
disappointments.
The film highlights dramatic developments that transform
the game: the 1994 strike that leaves many fans disillusioned
with their heroes; baseball’s skyrocketing profits thanks to new
stadiums; the introduction of interleague play and the wild card
playoff berth; the astonishing feats of Mark McGwire, Sammy
Sosa and Barry Bonds; and the revelations about performanceenhancing drugs that cast a shadow on many of the era’s greatest
stars and their accomplishments.
Combining filmed highlights, still photographs, music of the
period, and commentary by players, managers, experts and fans,
THE TENTH INNING interweaves the story of the national
pastime with the story of America.
In an age of globalization, deregulation and speculation, the
film demonstrates that baseball continues to mirror the country
— at its best and at its worst. The film also shows that when
America is feeling threatened, following the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001, baseball offers common ground. It provides
Americans with solace, distraction and hope for a return to
normality.
idahoptv.org
“Baseball has changed so much in the last 15 years, but at
the same time, the reason that the game is so enduring is that it
is timeless,” says Burns. “Like the original series, this film pays
tribute to one of our nation’s greatest institutions. We celebrate
tremendous athletic achievements and examine the humanity and
diversity of the players, the dynamic relationship with the fans,
and all the layers and nuances that make a seemingly simple
exercise of hitting a ball with a stick infinitely fascinating.”

Community Cinema
Kicks Off Seventh
Season in Idaho
A new season of the Community Cinema
outreach film series kicks off in Boise,
Pocatello and Caldwell in September.
Films are selected from the
INDEPENDENT LENS television series
for the monthly sneak previews, which
are followed by speakers and audience
discussion. The series is made possible
through a partnership of Idaho Public
Television, the Independent Television
Service, Boise State University, Idaho State
University and the College of Idaho. All
screening events are free and open to the
public.
The season’s first film, Me Facing
Life: Cyntoia’s Story, follows the sad and
startling story on Cyntoia Brown, 16, who
is serving a life sentence for murder. The
larger theme of the film is about putting a
teen with mental challenges on trial as an
adult and sentencing a young person to life
in prison. One journalist calls youngsters in
this situation “throw-away children.”
The hour-long film and 30-minute
discussion are scheduled September 21 at
5:30 p.m. in Boise State University Student
Union’s Barnwell Room and in Idaho State
University Pond Student Union Theater.
On September 22, the event is scheduled
in the College of Idaho Kathryn Albertson
International Center, Room 106, at 7:00 p.m.
In Boise, defense attorney Tom McCabe,
will comment on local decisions to try
juveniles as adults and lead the discussion
that follows. McCabe is founding president
of the Idaho Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers, and a past member of the
board of directors of the ACLU of Idaho.
Speakers in Pocatello and Caldwell are
pending.
Other films of the 2010-2011 season
are Reel Injun, Deep Down, The Calling,
For Once in My Life, Bhutto, Pushing the
Elephant and Welcome to Shelbyville.

and democracy. It looks at the origins
of the American concept of religious
liberty, and the controversial evolution
of that ideal in the nation’s courts and
political arena. The series considers the
role religious ideas and institutions have
played in social reform movements from
abolition to civil rights. It examines the
impact of religious faith on conflicts
from the American Revolution to the
Cold War, and how guarantees of
religious freedom created a competitive
religious marketplace in our nation.
The miniseries also explores the
intersection of political struggle and
spiritual experience in the lives of
some key American historical figures.
These include Franciscan Friars and the
Pueblo leader Po’pay, Puritan leader
John Winthrop and dissident Anne
Hutchinson, Catholic Bishop John
Hughes, abolitionist Frederick Douglass,
presidents Thomas Jefferson and
Abraham Lincoln, reform Rabbi Isaac
Meyer Wise, Scopes trial combatants
William Jennings Bryan and Clarence
Darrow, evangelist Billy Graham, civil
rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and
the Moral Majority’s Jerry Falwell.
The series executive producer Michael
Sullivan notes, “The American story
cannot be fully understood without
understanding the country’s religious
history. By examining that history, God
in America will offer viewers a fresh,
revealing and challenging portrait of the
country.”
It is a fascinating examination of the
role of religion in our nation’s history
that you won’t want to miss.
