Standard Maritime Flow Chart
Safe Water On Board
Bunkering water or making drinking water from sea water is a
routine job. As soon as drinking water is in your storage tanks a more
challenging task starts: keeping the drinking water and the whole
water distribution system in good condition. Relatively high
temperatures make the water quality deteriorate quicker than you
might imagine. Think of tanks situated next to engine rooms, when
operating in tropical environments or water lines which run through
the engine room. Suddenly water can become dangerous for the
health of your crew. Therefore it is of the greatest importance that
one should look after the whole drinking water treatment line from
the source to the tap.
Reliable design
Hatenboer-Water created the standard maritime flow chart to give
you some more understanding of all steps to be considered for a
reliable design of your water storage and distribution lay out. Our
installed base of over 2000 water systems gives us a thorough
understanding of water flows, applicable regulations and the
influences from outside that might influence your water quality.
This catalogue offers an overview of all our solutions, services and
products for your water management. The flow chart helps you to
find the products you are interested in. Feel free to contact us for
any additional explanation.
1. Fresh (drinking) water at sea can be
produced by means of desalination for
which an evaporator or Reverse Osmosis
plant is required. Also fresh drinking
water can be bunkered from shore or from
HDU barges (1.1). More info on page 24.
2. Hadex® drinking water disinfectant can
be dosed in water maker product water,
bunkering water and/or fresh water to the
chlorine based distribution system. As an
effective and essential method to reduce
the number of micro-organisms and to
avoid bacterial growth in the fresh water
storage tanks and piping systems.
More info on page 32.
3. Neutralising (Mineralising) filters are
used for the conditioning of the product
water from the evaporator or reverse
osmosis desalinator. The water from a
water maker hardly contains any natural
hardness, is without taste and has a
low pH. To prevent pipe corrosion and
harmful effects of this pure product water,
neutralising is applied.
More info on page 76.
4. Hydrophore units, pressurise the system
to the tap points in the required quantity.
More info on page 52.
5. Fine filters remove solid impurities such
as rust, sand and all kind of other debris.
Especially at locations where the water
contains turbid matter we advise fine
filtration of the water as a basic treatment
step in water purification.
More info on page 66.
5.1 Activated carbon filters improve the taste
and appearance of the water, removing
organic micro-pollutants such as traces of
hydrocarbons (oil, solvents) and are also
used for dechlorination.
More info on page 62.

6. Potable water stabiliser is used where

problems with corrosion occur in the
distribution system (rusty water). The
HW-Stabiliser stabilises the corrosion layer
and forms a hard layer, stopping any further
corrosion. More info on page 80-85.
2
7. Ultra Violet (UV) disinfection eliminates
bacteria in fresh water. An UV system needs
to be installed as last treatment step to the
users tap points. More info on page 38.

Hadex® Food Grade Drinking Water Disinfectant
Highest standards
Hadex® treatment is based on the proven and tested use of free chlorine in the
preparation and final treatment of drinking water. Hadex® treatment combines this
traditional practice with a number of important advantages, meeting the highest
standards set for a drinking water disinfectant.
What standards to expect from effective drinking water disinfectant?
I t should be food grade quality
It should be simple to apply
It should be immediately and easily soluble in water
It should be cost-effective per cubic metre of treated water
It should swiftly destroy any harmful organisms, and should remain active for
a sufficiently long period
• It should have no adverse effects on water quality, and should not allow the water
to become corrosive
Hadex® meets all these standards!
•
•
•
•
•
Advantages
Hadex is not only a safe, effective and easily applied product, but compared with
other products has even more advantages:
®
• i t is easily stored
• it has a very long shelf life:
Approvals
Hadex® has been tested and
approved by a number of (maritime)
authorities in the Netherlands and
abroad, including:
• Dutch Ministry of Health
at least eighteen months under normal conditions (T=25°C).
• at least three years if stored cool (T ≤6°C).
Other products have a shorter shelf life. For example, industrial sodium hypochlorite
loses about 30% of its effectiveness after storage for 30 days at 30°C.

Dosing
Hadex® is ready for immediate use as delivered. Because it is a very pure, stable and
safe product, it facilitates swift and accurate dosing. As it is a liquid product that mixes
quickly and easily with water, it can be added simply through the filling pipe or through
the tank opening. Hadex® starts disinfecting immediately, and the water is ready for
consumption after a short period of only 30 minutes when applying the normal dosing.
Availability
Hadex® is available from a large number
of suppliers, including ship’s chandlers
and agents. Check out page 14 for stock
points near you.
Standard dosages
There are three standard dosages for drinking water treatment in most situations.
They all meet the standards laid down by international maritime authorities.
1 Normal dosage
1 litre Hadex® : 50,000 litres of drinking water intended for the treatment of water
that is clear and of a normal quality.
2 Extra dosage
1 litre Hadex® : 25,000 litres of drinking water intended for the treatment of water
that is of inferior or doubtful quality.
3 High dosage (shock treatment)
1 litre Hadex® : 5,000 litres of drinking water Intended to be used under epidemic
conditions and/or when it is suspected that the water might be infected. High
dosage should also be applied as an initial treatment for the disinfection of tanks
and pipelines after repairs or renewals.

Hadex® Dosing Units (HDU)
The HDU's are proportional controlled, by use of pulse generating flow meters. All
dosing units can be supplied to meet your own specifications. A major advantage of
the Hatenboer-Water dosing units is that the standard packing is designed to be as a
dosing container. Therefore safer and easy to use.
Secure your drinking water system with a fully automatic flow controlled Hadex®
Dosing Unit. Dosing Hadex® is intended for the reduction and prevention of growth
of bacteria, algae and other micro-organisms. Hadex® automatic dosing units are
available for 10 and 25 litre Hadex® cans.
Options
For larger flows, especially in bunker systems electromagnetic flow meters are
available too. These meters have no moving parts.
The dosing units can also be controlled on base of free chlorine concentration. For
this an inline chlorine measurement unit is integrated. Contact our Sales Engineers for
information on a possible configuration for your situation.
Hadex dosing units are commonly used on three points in the fresh water system:
®
1. In the water maker product line
2.In the fresh water bunker line
3.After the hydrophore pumps (for re-chlorination of the distribution system)

Demitec® Betaline (BL/BM) UV Series
BetaLine UV is a series of optimised ‘L-shaped’ units. The system is completely
adaptable to your needs and design specifications. The BetaLine UV series uses lowpressure UV lamps (amalgam) which are available in different lengths, emitting a
narrow band of wavelengths. The 254 nm wavelength is most critical for disinfection.
Mounting
The ‘L-shape’ makes BetaLine UV system installation in existing or new pipelines
very simple. The UV chamber, which can be installed in a main or bypass pipeline,
vertically or horizontally, is able to turn 360° around the inlet axis.
Smart design positions the maintenance end flange on top of the UV chamber,
so BetaLine UV maintenance is very simple and requires only basic skills. The
components are easily accessible for removal or replacement.
Options
All BetaLine UV systems can be adapted to years with a complete package of options:
• Electrical/manual anti fouling system to remove lime deposits from the quartz
sleeves and UV sensor during operation. Even the smallest BetaLine UV unit can
be equipped with an (electrical) anti-fouling mechanism.

2. Disinfection
NIPH Approved UV Disinfection (BLE and Kappa)
When an offshore installation operates on the Norwegian continental shelf it needs to
comply to the Norwegian regulations stated within the Norwegian Institute of Public
Health (NIPH) Water Report. This guideline describes elaborately how to manage your
water system, which materials may be used and more.
For disinfection with ultra violet, it is stated that UV units need to be approved and
certified by the NIPH. As specialists in water treatment Hatenboer-Water saw the need
for certification as disinfection is a barrier against bacteria, viruses and parasites. As a
consequence Hatenboer-Water has certified a series of UV units. With the Demitec® UV
BLE/KappaLine you comply with the NIPH regulations for offshore units.
The Demitec® UV BLE/KappaLine systems use specially developed low-pressure UV
lamps and will emit a narrow spectrum of wavelengths. Most critical is the 254nm
wavelength. To qualify for NIPH certification, all UV units include an absolute UV
sensor which can be calibrated to provide a 4-20mA signal.
Maintenance
Intelligent system design makes the end flange easy to remove for quick, hasslefree access to all internal components. Only basic maintenance skills are required to
remove or replace parts (UV lamps, wiper rings, quartz sleeves). Fouling of the quartz
sleeves and UV sensor is prevented with an effective manual or electrically operated
‘anti-fouling mechanism’.

2.3 LiquiTech™
Copper/silver ionisation
It is known for centuries that copper and silver are strong
disinfectants. Now it is possible to safely use these ions
for disinfection in potable water applications.
By means of ionisation, the ions are released when the
water flows through a flow cell containing copper and
silver electrodes. The ions are carried along in the flow,
penetrating the biofilm and working inside the entire hot
and cold water piping system.
This makes LiquiTech very suitable (recognised by the
NIPH) for continuously combatting Legionella and other
biological contamination in your water system or in
systems where the existing water quality management
measures are proving to be inadequate.
42 | www.hatenboer-water.com
2. Disinfection
LiquiTech™
The LiquiTech system is comprised of a control unit and a flow cell. Each flow cell
contains copper/silver electrodes. As water passes through the flow cell, a direct
current is applied across the electrodes to stimulate the controlled release of ions.
The rate at which the ions are released is automatically maintained by flow meter and
a microprocessor-based control unit that is reliable and easy to operate.
The ions of the LiquiTech ionisation process are strong and potent biocides. The
disinfection action is attributable to the positively charged copper and silver ions
which form electrostatic bonds with negatively charged sites on microorganism
cell walls and this will kill the microorganism. The accurate dose-rate control
system maintains precise ion levels, providing residual protection and prevention
of recontamination. It is this residual protection that makes the LiquiTech system
superior in the challenging field of offshore.
Use LiquiTech:
•
•
•
•
•
When a potable water distribution system is extensive.
When problems with Legionella occur frequently.
When piping on board is heavily corroded and filled with biofilm.
When piping systems requires a high concentration of chlorine dosing.
To ensure safe water on board.

2.4 HWSIS
Silver ionisation
The Hatenboer-Water Silver Ion Steriliser is
a disinfection method for fresh water, approved by MCA.
Silver was already used for its bacteriostatic effect in
the old Roman times and has developed in to a modern
technology used to dose the silver ions in controlled
conditions. The silver ions prevent microbiological
growth during storage of the fresh water in the fresh
water tanks.

2. Disinfection
HWSIS15
The Hatenboer-Water Silver Ion Steriliser is a disinfection method for fresh water,
approved by MCA. Silver was already used for its bacteriostatic effect in the old Roman
times and has developed in to a modern technology used to dose the silver ions in
controlled conditions. The HWSIS-15D system is capable to treat max. 15 m3/h.
Advantages
An advantage of silver ions in the low concentration used is their safeguard for
human and animal life. Silver ions have no effect on smell, taste, pH and colour of the
water and have a long impact in the water storage and distribution system to avoid
bacteriological contamination. The ion levels stay well below the maximum amount as
specified by WHO and European directives.
Characteristics
The Hatenboer-Water HWSIS15D system is an easy-to-use, plug-and-play system,
suitable for bulkhead mounting. It consists of a base plate containing the electrical
control cabinet, the electrode chamber and accessories such as flow control valve,
flow sensor, pressure gauge, shut off valves.
The dosing is controlled by an advanced micro processor system which makes sure
that the right amount of silver is discharged depending on the total measured water
flow. Operation is through a user-friendly menu.
Options
Optionally a solenoid valve can be installed, for automatic shut off of the water flow in
case of failure.

Drinking water from the sea
For a project in Saudi Arabia, Hatenboer-Water has developed a water production
and distribution installation for the production of 30,000 litres of drinking water
per day from seawater. The system consists of a heavy-duty pre-filtration unit, two
reverse osmosis installations, together with a neutralisation stage to make the
seawater drinkable. In order to ensure that the water produced remains drinkable, the
distribution system has been equipped with a Hadex® disinfection dosing unit and a
Demitec® UV disinfection system; these are located after the hydrophore installation.
Pumping system
Selected for this application was a frequencycontrolled Hydro MPC-5 2 CRIE 10-9
hydrophore. Frequency control means that the chance of water hammer is minimised,
and all users are ensured of water at the correct pressure and flow rate at all times.
Containers
Both systems have been assembled and delivered in a single 20ft container. Thanks
to the design and construction carried out by Hatenboer-Water, the water units are
simple to operate and maintain.

3.2 Hydrophore Vessels
In hot water and pressure-boosting systems
A stable water supply and economical handling of
drinking water are the core benefits of potable water
expansion vessels.
Hydrophore vessels save valuable drinking water.
However, in a pressure-boosting system the vessel
stabilises also the pressure in the drinking water
network. As there are no uniform standards.
Hatenboer-Water selected a range of vessels that meet
up the high offshore and maritime demands you need.

3.4 Kemper Valves
Backflow preventers
Water is distributed throughout the ship and is not only
consumed by the crew, but also by water fed systems.
Every time the water is used the risk of chemical/
biological contamination of the complete system grows.
Kemper backflow preventers are a basic safeguard of
your water system, although a simple solution it is many
times ‘the forgotten valve’.

Backflow Preventers BA + EA
All outlets and systems in the potable water system need to be connected in a safe
way to prevent pollution. The type of connection depends on the health risk category
of the water inside the connected outlet or system. If the colour, taste, temperature or
purity changes, the correct way of connection needs to be selected.
Some examples are: dish washer, washing machine, potable water connection to oil
separator, waste water treatment, window wash system, etc. Shipbuilding engineers
have a challenging task in keeping water safe for crews and passengers.
The “NIPH Water Report 120-Safe, Sufficient and Good Potable Water Offshore” refers
to the EN 1717. It classifies five water categories which describe the quality of the water
that is present in different types of outlets and connected systems.
Category 1 is water for human consumption direct from the potable water system.
Category 2 is water suitable for human consumption, but it is treated like heating or
cooling (coffee maker, ice cube maker). The higher the category, the higher the risks
and the requested protection.
The description of category 5 is a fluid, representing a health hazard to humans
through the presence of microbiological or viral pathogens of transmittable diseases
(infection, mortal danger).
The most common protections are the EA and the BA. The EA (antipollution check
valve) is allowed till category 2 and the BA (backflow preventer) till 4. EN 1717 has
to be followed for correct installation. EA with valve and BA with cut-off valves and
strainer.

Hatenboer-Water Melt Blown Sediment Filter Cartridges
The Hatenboer-Water Melt Blown (HWMB) filter cartridge is the latest development
in sediment filter cartridge design. Manufactured with a true graded density, these
cartridges exhibit a high void volume that results in low differential pressure loss and
an excellent dirt holding capacity when compared to similarly rated cartridges. Each
cartridge is complete with an integral support for maximum strength. The superior
structure remains integral even under severe operating conditions and furthermore
the structure is less prone to media migration and breakthrough often found on other
unsupported spun bonded products.

Hatenboer-Water Carbon Block Filter Cartridges
The Hatenboer-Water Carbon Block (HWCB) filters offers an economical solution
for the removal of taste, colour of odour and solids. The rigid block construction
eliminates any potential bypass. The filters will not fluidise, therefore maximising the
effectiveness of the carbon media.
Inner core

Outer core
A double layer, spun bonded fiber pre-filter layer
For higher flows we advise to consider the HWCB Big Blue filters. These filters allow
a higher flow and also provide more contact time between the water and integrated
carbon block due to a larger diameter. This results in a deeper filtration.

5.1 Neutralising Filters
Avoid corrosion in fresh water system
Water with a low pH value, such as product water of
desalination plants (both evaporators and Reverse
Osmosis water makers), is often corrosive and
tasteless. The Hatenboer-Water Neutralising and
Mineralising (HDN) filters are especially fitted for the
conditioning of product water. As a result, the water
is no longer corrosive and, when used for drinking, a
natural taste is added to the water.

5. Water Conditioning
Neutralising Filters
The Hatenboer-Water Neutralising and Mineralising (HDN) filters for the conditioning of
product water from desalination installations. It improves taste and avoids corrosion
in your fresh water system. Hatenboer-Water offers a wide range of neutralising/
mineralising filters.
Water with a low pH value, such as product water from a evaporators or Reverse
Osmosis water maker, is often corrosive and tasteless. This so-called ‘acid condition’
is due to the presence of free carbonic acid gas (CO2) and lack of natural minerals.
To make this water neutral or slightly alkaline, it should be neutralised or mineralised.
To ensure the complete removal of CO2, the water will be filtered through a bed of
neutralising filter media, named EWT Compound.
In the neutralisation process, CO2 reacts with EWT compound and natural bicarbonates
are formed. As a result, the water is no longer corrosive and a natural taste is added to
the water.
Piping
The HDN filters are supplied with a complete set of piping, including six ball valves for
operating the complete filter process; backwashing, flushing and draining the filter.

Potable Water Dosing Units
The Potable Water Dosing Unit is designed to prevent and stop corrosion in potable
water systems. Corrosion does not only cause “brown” water out of taps and reduction
of internal piping diameters, it is also a breeding ground for all kind of bacteria, as e.g.
Legionella.
Therefore it is important to prevent corrosion in order to have clean and safe drinking
water. The Potable Water Dosing Unit operates completely automatic by use of a
metering device which controls this dosing pump proportionally to the flow.
The Hatenboer HW Stabiliser 445+ is an approved chemical for application in drinking
water systems. It is packed in standard 25 litre poly cans. Preferably the Potable Water
Dosing Unit is installed directly downstream the potable water hydrophore pumps and
upstream the hydrophore tank.

5.4 Demineralisers
Water conditioning
The Hatenboer-Water Demiflow (HDF) system
delivers fully demineralised water, of the highest
quality, in seconds. It is based on the ion-exchange
principle. All in the water soluble hardness scalars,
salts, acids and alkaline will be absorbed by the
mixed bed resin. This process continues until the
resin becomes saturated. At this point the resin
needs to be regenerated or changed. HatenboerWater can supply you these resins out of stock.

5. Water Conditioning
Demiflow Demineralisers (HDF)
The Hatenboer-Water Demiflow Demineraliser system (HDF) delivers full demineralised
water, of the highest quality, in seconds. The HDF system is installed directly on the
main water supply, but it can also be used as post-treatment for RO water (polishing).
The basic set contains a pressure resistante (max 6 bar) replaceable demi-cartridge,
resin filling, the distributor head and a connection set.
The Hatenboer-water Demiflow Demineraliser system contains a mixed bed resin that is
based on the ion-exchange principle. All in the water soluble hardness scalars, salts,
acids and alkaline will be absorbed by the resin, until the resin becomes saturated. At
this point the resin needs to be regenerated or changed.
EC measuring
The conductivity of the demi-water indicates the saturation of the mixed bed resin. This
prevents the user from using hard water without noticing.
Continuous production
Hatenboer-Water can offer a Duplex HDF system when a continuously production
of demi-water is demanded. This system includes two filled Demiflow cartridges
connected to a conductivity meter. This allows the user to replace the cartridges
separately in order to avoid interruption in the production flow.

Everpure Claris Ultra Filters
The Claris ultra offers balanced alkalinity and mineral composition and features the
‘unique 5 stage’ Claris filtration.
Claris Ultra offers higher capacities versus traditional Claris due to its added
sequestering agent which allows more blended water to go through the DUOBLEND
bypass, putting less stress on the resin thus slowing its exhaustion.
Application
The Ultra line adds an additional process that combines partial hydrogen softening
and sequestering which stabilises mineral content using sequestering anions making
it ideal for steam ovens with integrated boiler. The result is a balanced alkalinity and
mineral composition in water, with stable and close-to-neutral pH which helps prevent
lime scale formation.

Cleaning and Disinfection
Potable water tanks & Distribution systems
During operation, sediment and biofilm will settle in the tanks
and distribution system, becoming an ideal growth environment for
microbes. Therefore the tanks and distribution system need to be
cleaned and disinfected on a regular base.
Cleaning and disinfection of the complete system needs to be carried
out before the vessel leaves the yard, after repairs or in case of
nonconformities.

Test kits
As specialist in water, Hatenboer-Water composed dedicated test kits to
ensure that you can comply with regulations once you have a specific test kit
on site or on board (See chapter 6). In doubt whether your situation stands
up to the authorities? Please consult our Water Quality Department.
Together with the clearly presented results the analysis report contains
recommendations if applicable.
Ad-hoc and standard tests
Hatenboer-Water offers several standard tests of your water, according to
your needs. In addition to the following examinations, we also deal with
specific requests for analysis and advice concerning (drinking) water:
Standard bacteriological examination
To test the general condition of the water Hatenboer-Water provides a
standard bacteriological examination. This comprises of an analyses of the
total bacteria count and a few common pathogenic organisms:
• Coliform bacteria at 37°C
• E. coli (Escherichia) at 44°C
• Intestinal enterococci
This type of examination is required by the WHO, Ship Sanitation. Additional
analyses might be required depending on the situation on board and the
applicable regulations.
Water Quality
Service Contract:
Legionella spp examination
Please ask our Water Quality
department for the advantages of
our Water Quality Service Contract, in
which reduced rates are applicable for
sampling and analyses.
Legionella can grow in stagnant and warm water, especially when biofilm
has been formed in the piping. Unfortunately, this is a common problem
on board. The health risks that Legionella bacteria can cause are severe.
Regular examination for Legionella on board can help identifying the risk
in an early stage. To prevent Legionella and assure good water quality all
together by good water management, check our 'Water Management Plan'
(RA&MP).
Such a contract offers certainty and
convenience on the basis of
a professional and expert approach.
Hatenboer-Water can provide you with
a total package, from sampling to
clear (periodic) reporting.
Physical-chemical examination
In a physical-chemical analysis, the drinking water is examined for several
(in)organic parameters, such as salts and metals. The parameters of these
analyses depend on the issue on board. Specific complaints such as
abnormal odour, appearance or taste of the water, or calamities determine
the required analysis. The parameters for such testing are generally
determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the client.
Chemical examinations (Hydrocarbons)
For more information please contact:
The Netherlands
T +31 (0)10 409 12 00
This is a specific analysis to determine the presence of a wide range of
volatile organic substances (for example solvents) in the (drinking) water.
This analysis often follows after regular complaints about the taste and/or
smell (solvents, paint, coating) of the drinking water, e.g. after the coating of
a drinking water tank has been renewed.

Potable Water Manuals
A potable water manual contains the risk assessment and guidelines for the
operation, maintenance and control of the potable water system.
Hatenboer-Water can assist in outlining, or drawing up, the complete
guidebooks for your potable water system. As a result, you will always have
the relevant data at hand in one document. The included procedures assist
in the planning, preparation and performance of your operations, all in
accordance with the required regulations.
With more than 30 years of experience our Water Quality
department comes forward with solutions and services
that are always practical and always dedicated.
Preliminary Risk Assessments
A preliminary risk assessment is based on the
P&ID and other ship drawings. Hatenboer-Water
offers consultancy services for ship designers
and yards on the specific piping and system
lay-out for new buildings in order to ensure good
water quality and compliance with the relevant
regulations.
Risk Assessments
During a risk assessment an inventory of
the possible risks is made concerning the
drinking water quality and the condition of the
drinking water piping system. Hatenboer-Water
experts compare the entire water system from
production to consumption as shown in the
drawings and the actual situation on board.
During the inspection, areas of risks that
are present on board are assessed. The risk
assessment is concluded by an improvement
plan and a management plan.

Cold Stacking
Mothballing your water maker
During ‘Cold Stacking’ of a rig, vessel or platform it will be docked at port
and essentially shut down. This means the water maker system will be out
of service for a longer period. To prepare your system during this period, we
advise to mothball your complete water maker system.
Our dedicated service engineers are all offshore certified and specialised
in the maintenance of water treatment systems. They can perform a
conservation of your water maker system in a competent manner.
This means that your crew can focus on vessel specific items.
The conservation of the fresh water maker system reduces costs for
maintenance and attention during the ‘cold stacking’ period of the rig,
vessel or platform and is to smooth up the progress for
the future re-commissioning of the system.
Cold stacking of a rig is similar to ‘shuttering’ an industrial plant – it involves
‘storing’ the rig in a port or shipyard. The crew is reduced to (almost) zero
to minimise costs.
