Northeastern State University Foundation | 2013 Annual Report
A Message From The President
Dear Friends:
On May 7, 2014 we held a grand celebration for the iconic symbol of Northeastern State
University – Seminary Hall. The original dedication of Seminary Hall was held 125 years
earlier on May 7, 1889. The “lamp of learning ignited in the wilderness” by the Cherokee
Nation in 1851, when the first Seminary for females opened on May 7 in Park Hill,
continues to burn brightly at NSU in 2014. As the Chief of the Cherokee Nation, Bill John
Baker, said during the 125th Anniversary Celebration, Seminary Hall unites the university,
the City of Tahlequah, and the Cherokee Nation. It also reminds us that so many have
given through the decades in support of quality education.
To commemorate the 125th Anniversary we created the Light The Way Scholarship Fund
and established a base goal of raising $125,000. The funds will be used to help students
who find themselves in a financial crisis that could not have been anticipated or avoided.
I am pleased to report that because many of you gave at least $1,000, the goal was met
and the fund is endowed. An application and review process is being developed and
funds will be available for the fall semester. I want to personally say thank you to each
of you who gave. Your contribution will be life-changing for our students. There is still
time to give to the Light The Way Fund and in fact, additional resources would enable
us to help meet the needs of more students. Over the past three years we have learned
through exit interviews that the number one reason students leave NSU is due to a
financial crisis. These are students who have met the admissions requirements and are
making the grades to stay enrolled.
The Light The Way Scholarship Fund is also the start of our next major fundraising
campaign. Peggy Glenn and I have spent the past 15 months visiting with all the
academic colleges and the campus-at-large to determine the real needs of our
competent faculty and staff. From these meetings we have identified four major
categories: Student Scholarship; Equipment and Technology; Endowed Chairs and
Professorships; and Bricks and Mortar. The campus community made it clear that the
biggest single need at Northeastern State University is to significantly increase the
number of student scholarships.
We have selected a consultant to help us conduct a feasibility study related to the Light
The Way Campaign. It is anticipated that the study will take approximately five months
to complete. We will be contacting many of you in the months ahead to get your views
as we determine the scope of the campaign. I hope you will participate fully during the
fact-finding portion of the campaign.
Many of you are President’s Circle donors which means you give at least $1,000 per
year to support NSU. Thank you! We know that the growth in the NSU Foundation’s
assets to more than $20 million as of mid-2014 — a
record high — would not be possible without you. Still,
we must enhance the culture of philanthropy to meet
the ever increasing needs in the years ahead. State
Appropriations are appreciated but we cannot expect
them to fund all our student needs. We need you to
help us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steve Turner, President

Northeastern State University Foundation | 2013 Annual Report
The Northeastern
State University
Foundation, Inc. is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit
corporation formed
exclusively to
support NSU.
A Message From the Executive Director
• NSU continues to make headway toward the goals set forth in “Destination 2023:
A 10-year road map of distinction through degree completion,” including a plan to
increase our annual number of degrees awarded to a minimum of 2,477 per year,
up from the baseline of 1,787 degrees conferred in 2011.
Milestones. They can mark the distance to a particular place, as did the actual
stones from which the word originated, or they can mark how far we’ve come, as in
anniversaries, birthdays, or graduations. Northeastern State University has some of both
this year, building on its solid foundation of providing quality public higher education in
northeast Oklahoma for over a century.
For example, several NSU structures are celebrating significant anniversary milestones
this year:
• The Gene Branscum Alumni Center turned 25 years old in April. Built by NSU’s
own Physical Plant employees as a gathering place for NSU alumni, the building’s
secondary purpose has transitioned from lodging for university guests to offices for
the NSU Foundation, NSU Alumni Association, and NSU Office of Development.
• Doc Wadley Stadium will be 50 years old this coming football season, following on the
heels of last year’s centennial celebration of football at NSU.
• The John Vaughan Library turns 65 years old as those born the year it was built
become eligible for Medicare. The structure has witnessed the creation of our
Archives and Special Collections, as well as the advent of computers and digital media.
• Seminary Hall celebrated its quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) in May with
Victorian-era decorations and costumes, a crowd of 300 people, and representatives
from the tribes, state government, student government, and our community.
• Our first-ever Master Plan for all three campuses was revealed earlier this year,
turning 16 months of student, employee and community input into a flexible
framework for development of all three campuses. See more at
http://www.nsuok.edu/masterplan/Documentation.aspx.
• With your support, the NSU Foundation provided a record $724,000 in scholarships
to NSU students in 2013, and by encouraging more students to apply for these
scholarships, we are helping increase the number of NSU students who graduate
debt-free.
We hope you will join us on campus this year to celebrate another annual milestone,
NSU Homecoming, on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25, 2014. The annual
Emerald Ball, whose proceeds go to NSU scholarships, will be held the Saturday evening
of Homecoming, so be sure to make your plans accordingly.
And let us know if you – or other NSU alumni – are celebrating a personal milestone
such as a new baby, nuptials, a significant anniversary, a new job, or a professional or
community achievement. C.S. Lewis, author of The
Chronicles of Narnia, once described a desolate road as
one “without milestones, without signposts.” So help us
honor the miles we’ve come as an institution of higher
education, and continue to support our university and
students as we map out where we’re going and how
we’ll get there.
And we’re posting new milestones to show how far we have to go:
• In May, President Turner announced the creation of the “Light the Way Scholarship,”
funded with $125,000 in private donations from many of you, to establish an
endowment for students who experience an unanticipated emergency that can be
overcome by a small scholarship or no-interest loan.

I think it is one of the best
places you can put your money
because you can change
people’s lives with a college
education. I have seen people
come here from small towns
and big cities who really didn’t
understand what the real
world was like, and that is one
of the things that college can
do for anybody. It changes
their lives and gives them the
opportunities to be a person of
their full potential.

Northeastern State University Foundation | 2013 Annual Report
Ways to give
Charitable Remainder Trust
Your charitable remainder trust can be funded
during your lifetime or through a testamentary
disposition. Each provides life income for
designated beneficiaries, which can include you.
Life Insurance
Gifts of Cash
Cash is the most common form of gift that comes
to the NSU Foundation. Your gift of cash, like
other gifts, can be directed to any fund, specific
scholarship, or program, which are listed on pages
10-13.
Gifts of Securities or Real Property
Contributions of stock or real estate with
appreciated value are another way to lend support.
When the NSU Foundation acquires your gift of
appreciated stock or property, you receive a tax
deduction equal to its fair market value and avoid
costly capital gains tax on the increase in value.
Gifts-in-Kind
Your donations of software, licenses, services,
vendor products, and other property also support
the mission and programs of NSU. These gifts-inkind allow us to use our resources for other needs
while you get a credit for your support. Contact
us for guidelines and acceptance policy regarding
gifts-in-kind.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A deferred gift, such as a charitable gift annuity, is
a great way to make a significant contribution. In
exchange for your gift of cash or property, the NSU
Foundation guarantees you a lifetime of income.
Naming the NSU Foundation as the owner and
beneficiary of your life insurance policy is also
an option, especially when your policy has a face
amount that is much greater than the amount
you can afford to give in cash. This ensures that
future premium payments made by you are taxdeductible. Pay the entire policy, or make annual
contributions to the NSU Foundation for the cost of
premiums.
Wills and Trusts
The NSU Foundation can also be named as
beneficiary in the wills and trusts of Northeastern
alumni and friends. You can elect to leave all or
part of an estate to benefit the university.
The NSU Foundation Guardian Society honors
individuals with outstanding discernment—a special
group of visionaries who look beyond the present
to the future of our university. This includes friends
of Northeastern who are heroes to the students
whose lives are changed through their generosity.
By naming the NSU Foundation in their wills or
trusts these individuals have designated all or a
portion of their estate to be used for endowment
or other special purposes. Honorees also include
those who have arranged a charitable gift annuity
with the NSU Foundation. These philanthropic
donors are sharing their assets with NSU, while
maintaining an economic stream for their lifetime.
Other members have made the NSU Foundation
a beneficiary of their life insurance or retirement
plan accounts. These donors invest in the future
of Northeastern, and in doing so, reaffirm their
commitment to permanence.
Leave a Lasting Legacy with an
endowment
When you establish an endowment with the NSU
Foundation, you …
Enable Perpetual Support
Your gift toward an endowed fund creates neverending support for students, faculty, and programs.
Ensure a Strong Future
Your endowment is an investment in the future of Northeastern State University. As it grows, the
university gains additional support.
Enact a Lasting Legacy
Your endowed fund is a wonderful way to pay
tribute to a family member, loved one, classmate,
or professor. Created in perpetuity, your
endowment has a long lasting legacy associated
with NSU. Endowed funds are reminders of the
great support provided by those who came before.
Be sure to consult with a qualified professional
before you draft your will or trust, and review it
often. Sample language is available for any of the
bequests listed above. For additional information
on donations, wills, bequests, gift acceptance
policy, or planned giving in general, please contact
the NSU Foundation at 918-458-2143.

2013 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
FOUNDATION
GIVING LEVELS
The Honor Roll of Donors
identifies significant gifts made
by alumni, faculty, staff, students,
parents, friends, and community
members during the calendar
year 2013. We not only celebrate
the gifts you make each year, but
also recognize your cumulative
giving. The contributions you
provide have a profound impact
for generations to come. Thank
you all for your generous
support of Northeastern State
University and we appreciate
your name appearing in this very
special list.
