The monthly average number of customers who visited the Flathead
Job Service in person was 7,581; the daily average of in-person visits
was 371 with the highest number in one day being 802.
At one point, there were 9,344
applicants registered with the Flathead
Job Service and only 189 job orders filed.
As the community felt the impact of the recession, FVCC
served as a resource for many by providing guidance and
support, helping to create a brighter economic future.
In 2008-2009, FVCC served a
record number of students.
Enrollment
soared 33.3 percent from the previous year.
FVCC
partnered with the Flathead Job Service to assist
displaced workers by providing education and re-training guidance and advising, counseling
and tutoring services to help them succeed during their transitions.
added 239 sections of classes including early morning, evening
and weekend classes and hired 89 new adjunct faculty members, putting
FVCC
more people to work.
FVCC offered
late starting developmental courses for dislocated
workers so they could brush up on their English and math skills.
FVCC
partnered with the City of Kalispell, Montana West Economic Development,
Kalispell Chamber of Commerce and Flathead Business and Industry Association to identify
common economic development goals.
“From day one, everyone at FVCC has helped me out
immensely. They have been hugely supportive and have made
it easy for me to adjust to college after 30 plus years of not
sitting in a classroom. I’ve made lots of new friends between
students, instructors and the college staff. And
I am learning new skills that I can apply anywhere.”

FVCC created
new programs to directly
meet the needs and interests of students and local
employers needing workers with specific skills.
New programs included Graphic Design Associate

“The economic recession caused a lot of hardships
for me. My employer cut my hours, making it very
difficult for me as a single mom to pay my bills and
prepare for the birth of my daughter. I now am taking
online classes at FVCC and preparing to apply for
the practical nursing program. The online classes
are great. They enable me to stay home and care for
my baby. The nursing program is going to help me
get a better job and provide me a more flexible work
schedule so I can spend more time with my daughter
as she grows up.”

“I really appreciate the availability of the instructors
at FVCC. Everyone at the college is very supportive,
the faculty and staff stand behind you, and the overall
atmosphere of the campus is encouraging. I never feel
like I can’t get the help I need. The substance abuse
counseling program will enable me to apply for the
Montana Addiction Counselor License exam, so I can
start my own business. And the 2+2 program in social
work will allow me to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree
in social work through The University of MontanaMissoula without having to leave the Flathead Valley.”

Program Instructor/Coordinator Greg Waldrop. The hands-on
endeavor involved all students in the program working on the house
five days a week over an eight-month period with the ending result
being a completed home that is listed on the market to sell.
The three-bedroom, two-bath home
was constructed to follow the National
Association of Home Builders Green
Building Guidelines. The home was built
with recycled materials and contains
green features including insulated
concrete forms, poured concrete exterior
walls for superior insulation and sound
proofing, an air source heat pump for
efficient heating and cooling, real birch
hardwood floors, Energy Star appliances,
low flow bathroom fixtures, high energy
lighting systems and a two-car insulated
garage.
The home was showcased in the 2010
Flathead Valley Parade of Homes.

The FVCC Foundation established 14 new
scholarships during 2009. Nearly $305,000
in private donor scholarships were awarded
to 256 students.
Katherine Kerr, right,
recipient of the Rita
Johnson Endowment
Fund for Nursing
Students, was grateful
to meet Rita Johnson,
left, the donor of her
scholarship.
The FVCC Foundation welcomed a record crowd of 170 scholarship
donors and recipients to its 16th annual Scholarship Luncheon. The
event provided an opportunity for private scholarship donors to
meet the student scholarship recipients. Donors were acknowledged
for contributing over $253,701 in private donor scholarship awards,
and 222 students were recognized for receiving the awards for the
2009-2010 academic year.
A tearful Marni Thomas presented an emotional address to
scholarship luncheon guests about the impact the scholarships she
received have made on her life and the lives of her children.
The FVCC Foundation hosted 527 guests at the spring and summer
tours of the Bibler Home and Gardens, generating $6,488 to fund
the FVCC student scholarship program. The summer tours kicked
off with a special event featuring a wine reception and an exclusive
tour of the Bibler’s collection of fine art presented by FVCC Art
Instructor John Rawlings.
The FVCC Foundation awarded $10,018 to fund three FVCC faculty
Enhancement Grants for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Awards included:
• FVCC Tree Farm Management Project for $4,823; the
award was used to purchase much needed equipment to
maintain the college’s poplar tree test site;
• Faculty Training on Patient Simulators for $2,695; the
grant funded simulator training for nursing, medical
assistant and paramedicine faculty in order to provide
students with more interactive learning experiences; and
• Specialized Interactive Anatomy and
Physiology Program for $2,500; the award was
used to purchase interactive software to better
prepare health care students for successful
careers in their fields of study.
A&A joined FVCC President Jane
Karas for a fall event in the new
Scholars Center featuring speakers
from the Scholars program and a
high tea presented by the culinary arts
students. In the spring, A&A hosted a
number of president’s luncheons and
a president’s evening at Suzy Williams’
home to update guests on students and
programs at FVCC.
The Foundation’s Ambassadors and Alumni (A&A), whose
mission is to serve as advocates for the college, hosted several
events for friends and alumni and launched a Student
Ambassadors program. Twenty students were recruited to
assist the Foundation with public events and to share their
stories about FVCC with friends and alumni.
