Edition
The
Class of 2012 experienced one unusual
senior year. First, the class comes to a
building under construction...no more
front door...no office area...no front
lobby area or restroom. It was the
land of utter chaos. Just as everyone
started to adjust, classmate James
Johnson died in an automobile accident, leaving a hole in our South Decatur heats but also providing an opportunity for friends to support one another.
The Class moved forward and impressed their teachers and peers with
their charm, their talents, and their
wits. Seniors Danielle Wenning and
Natalie Smiley were Lilly Scholarship
finalists, with Smiley winning the big
prize. When spring came, the rest of
the school year flew past; the front
lobby’s infamous tower was finished;
and graduation parties were planned.
The Class of 2012 had ’constructed’
their own memorable senior year.

embodied what every music teacher wanted in a student; he loved his music and he
loved learning about it and sharing that

Construction:
New front entrance
It seems as if this school year has been defined by construction. At
times, it has almost seemed like the projects would never be completed! However, the various construction activities are actually progressing quite well.
In fact, the front office and tower area are practically complete. Once
Mrs. Pittman’s desk arrives and the rest of the furniture gets moved, the administrative office will once again be in full operation. All that remains to be done outside is the landscaping and pouring the concrete for the new sidewalk from the
cafeteria parking lot to the front entrance.
The progress of the new science wing may be less visible to all the students, but it is also coming along well. Currently, the crew is putting on the roof
and preparing to pour the floor. After that, they will begin bricking the outside.
Over the summer, the rest of the interior will be completed, and the entire project is expected to be completed in mid-July, according to Principal Jim Jameson.
This fall, sports fans will once again be able to watch football in comfort.

It’s Been One
of Those
Years!
“The year flew by” is no exaggeration! It seems like just yesterday we were walking into the building, complaining about
the construction, the missing restroom in the front hallway, the heat… then the cold.
Maybe the saying is true—time does fly when you’re having fun. Think about all the great moments we’ve shared at

Homecoming—for the 7th graders it was their first official high school parade and the first time watching the lip sync
contest. And what better year than 2011 when the Seniors “flash mobbed” the Black Eyed Peas’ “I gotta feeling” with
Max and Isaac dressed as Peas, and Mrs. Noah doing a Fergie impersonation.

When Mr. Hermesch dressed up as Mr. Clean (The man has a really great scalp!)

The projects in Miss Stouts’ classes—who would have thought English could be fun?

Dressing up in duct tape——The Chicago trip for the 8th graders—- a trip to the theatre with Mrs. Smiley

Dancing and having fun at Cotillion— watching Brayden and Olivia get the crowns!

Carrying a crate down the hall because you repeatedly forgot to bring your ‘supplies’ to class! That’s what Jr. High
memories are made of!
Excellent Duct tape tie for Duct Tape Day—Great Spirit!
Mrs. A kept the junior high voices
in shape and directed the Spring
Concert.

Dustin Huff claims YouTube is his “Kind of Place”
by Matthew Gatewood
Now starring on YouTube, South Decatur’s very own ---Dustin Huff! This has made a real impact on his life. Dustin
loves writing music and singing. His inspiration for his music
is country singer Justin Moore, whose song Small Town USA is
one of Huff’s favorites.
Dustin writes his own lyrics drawing from memories,
mistakes, and the way he lives. Dustin’s dad, Brian Huff,
taught him how to play guitar when he was in the 6th grade.
Huff also learned the song Iron Man from his best friend Matthew Gatewood:)….(Love you Dust!) Dustin wrote his first
song in the 8th grade, and since then he has eleven complete
songs, but only eight of them are on YouTube. Dustin is recording with Zach Brown, who has a studio in Rushville. Recording there helps his songs have better quality.
After high school, Dustin plans on going to Nashville to
fulfill his dreams of becoming a country music star. If that
doesn’t work out, he wants to be in the music industry, in
someway, as either a guitarist or a song writer.
Recently Dustin has been sending his demo CD to California to South Decatur High School graduate, Marc Berkemeier, who knows contacts in a number of famous record
companies that have signed big country music stars. Berkemeier told Dustin that agents said they LOVED his music and
want more demos that are “cleaned up”, meaning to add
drums, guitars, more vocals, etc… Dustin has songs on
“this is my kind of place,
where I was born and
raised”
YouTube. To find him, type in “Dusty Huff” and his songs will
come up!

I.C.E stands for Interdisciplinary
Cooperative Education and this
program offers the opportunity
for students to experience going to school and having a job
all in one day. These students
put hard work into their education at school and their responsibilities at work. Mr. Honeycutt
doesn’t put up with slackers,
but he is definitely the right
person for this job.

Mr. Diehl’s fight with Lymphoma
In March 2012, Mr. Matt Diehl, South Decatur’s choir teacher, learned he had a large mass located in his chest. On April 2, Diehl underwent surgery to remove the mass. The doctors were only able to
remove 1/3 of this large mass; the other 2/3’s were more intrusive than the doctors had first thought. On
April 6, Mr. Diehl and his wife Lori, received a diagnosis as to what Mr. Diehl was fighting, Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma.
This is a type of cancer that attacks the lymph nodes, which can be located in the neck or in the lungs behind the breastbone. The lymph nodes are what help control the immune system.
On April 8, Diehl was released from the hospital and the following Monday he went back to the hospital
for a CT body scan and various tests which helped prepare him for the next step, chemo. April 20, at 8
A.M., Mr. Diehl started his first round of chemo. Then on May 4, Diehl had his second round of chemo.
On May 18, he is scheduled to start round 3 of his chemo treatments. Diehl is halfway through his first set
of chemo treatments. He will then start 6 weeks of radiation and then have 6 more rounds of chemo.
Mr. Diehl looked good at SD’s Spring Concert on May 14, where he stood up and recognized his choir
seniors. The next day, Lori updated the website, wishing SD a very special thank you: “We [Lori and
Matt] were overwhelmed by the kindness, love, and support that our family was shown. The out pouring
of love for Matt and our family was beyond humbling.”
If anyone would like to check on Mr. Diehl’s progress over the summer, go to the website
<caringbridge.org/visit/mattdiehl> Lori constantly updates his condition and when his chemo and radiation treatments are happening.
Get Well Soon Wishes
Jeff Flynn– I love and miss you, Mr. Diehl
Aubrey Hodson– Mr. Diehl, I hope you get better! I have been praying for you everyday. You are in my
and my families thoughts and prayers. We miss you so much!
Rachel Campbell– Mr. Diehl, keep up the positive attitude and before you know it, you will be all better
and back to school doing what you love to do! Get well soon! I love and miss you! Thinking of you and
praying for you daily!
Ashley Biddinger– We love you, Mr. Diehl.
Kaitlyn Cain– Mr. Diehl, we love and miss you. Get better!

“Retire from work, but not
from life.” –M. K. Soni
After 26 years total in her teaching
career and 22 being in Decatur
County, Mrs. Crane is putting in the
final stich in the year of 2012.
Mrs. Crane is involved in the school
in so many ways, one would think
that she runs the place. She is the leader of both
FCCLA and SADD clubs at South Decatur High School.
Mrs. Crane also teaches five different classes including Foods I, Fashion & Textiles, FACS, child development, and OLC. Just these five classes alone shows
how much responsibility she takes at the school and
after all of the hard work it is time for her to relax.
“The harder you work, the
harder it is to surrender.” Vince Lombardi
Mrs. Crane has many great memories as well as
memories that she would rather not experience
twice. She says that her favorite thing about
teaching is “Watching the students grow and mature and seeing them again”. Her worst memory
that she recalls is quite an interesting one. One
particular day at school, students were not allowed leave the rooms, and a student asked to go
to the bathroom and she thought to herself “I
have to let him go”. When he walked up to her
desk he vomited all over it.
Her favorite thing about teaching at South Decatur especially is FCCLA. Her club members have
competed nationally in California, Massachussetts
and this year in Orlando, Florida. All of the students, not only in the clubs that she leads, will
miss her.

The Class of 2012 has
something to leave behind….
besides their dust!
I have enjoyed attending high school here at South Decatur. I would like
“I want the bleachers to be up and the
to leave my sister Ashey: the permission to break my cross country rec-
tower to have at least one or two hunt-
ord, and the ability to make it to regionals! To the cross country team: I
leave my determination, endurance, and joy of running, even if it is 10
ers in it at least every other year.”
miles! To Emily and Tyler” I leave you anyone but me to make fun of, and
—Daniel
the fact that I am taking “the stick” to college with me also our long list
Kelley
of complaints. To Paje, Shelby, Jennifer, and Lexi: All those wonderful
conversations we had at lunch, and all the times I was lonely. To everyone I hang out with in the morning: following the
leader, aka not Tyler. To Sam” I leave my Ohio
State hat you lost! The track team: I leave the
enjoyment of running a mile warm-up, and running
like a racecar. To Mrs. Pittman’s next office aid:
the fact that you don’t get to sit around doing
homework, she makes you do everything!! To
Brandi Palmer: The joy of being my prom date! To
everyone: forgotten or did not mention” I leave
this advice: try your best, and enjoy every second
of high school, Also do not worry about the drama,
just ignore it and be yourself, and most important-
I leave all the memories of the ditch to
Jordan Kalley.
—Colt Foster
ly, remember it’s your life.
To the underclassmen-- I will you the ability to appreciate the time you
have left. Enjoy every second, because time flies! To Paje Smiley--I will klahoma, the Lamar to
treat it, and an endless supply of Serv-a-Lemon. To Lexie, Shelby, Paje, Jennifer, Falyn, Chelsi,
Kassie, and Natalie—I will you all handshakes. You know what I mean ;) To Chelsi Gilbert—I will
you my expert peeling and stirring skills. Also, all the crickets you can eat. To Tyler and Jennifer—I will you luck with English team in the future. And, no, Tyler, the answer is not always
‘women’! To Julie—I will you some niceness. You’re going to need it. To Abby—I will you some lotion and chapstick for your OCD. To Kassie—I will you your three rules. To Natalie—I will you
some stalker repellent. Oh wait, I take that back; that’s way too entertaining! - Danielle Wenning
To the entire cast and crew of the drama department: I leave you many, many handshakes. I also leave you the ability to find everything you need in our various hiding
spots. Good luck J To Paje: I will my fantastic musical abilities because you asked for
them. To Colie-olie: I leave some of the innocence we stole from you during the musical.
I apologize. To Zane: I will lots of car rides with Paje, which should make the next couple of years pretty darn interesting. To Braiden: I give you the “U” you ask for at nearly
every practice. To Josh Miller: I leave pants without holes in them. The Indiana FFA will
appreciate that. To Will: I will (haha) some common sense to help you get through
school. I do worry about you, little brother. To Falyn: I leave my vote for the “Hipster of
the Year Award” for the rest of eternity. To everyone: I leave the knowledge that senior
year flies by, so take every opportunity to enjoy it.

Senior year flew by… All I want to say to the underclassmen is good luck, have no regrets, and
don’t do something that you don’t want to. Senior year is all about you. Friends change, teachers lay the law down harder, and it’s all about SCHOLARSHIPS & RESEARCH PAPERS! According to Mrs. Hudson (: AJ- My best friend. I don’t know what I would have done without you in
basketball. If you didn’t play I would have for sure quit. Getting your John Deere boots before
me (GRR), Toilet papering, window chalking, hot tub, Wal-Mart “trips”, Kassidie’s yard, El
Reparo, Hittin’ curbs, late nights, and long talks I’ll never forget. I wish we could have become
friend’s way before now. Only like 3 miles away from each other and basically sisters. We don’t
put up with preppy girl S*%t!! (: Thank you for being there for me. Don’t be afraid to just show
up at my house or shoot a text. I’m not going anywhere yet! I love ya girly! Tyler James- Short
& Sweet.. I love you, and thank you for everything you have done for me! You are the best. Ker

Wells- Well… you’re a tard. (: I don’t know why we haven’t been this close before. Yearbook brought us together. We are
just that cool. Your crazy and I think that’s why I love ya! Haha Thanks for taking a summer class with me, I hate being a
loner. I know we don’t have hardly any memories, but we are sure gonna’ make some that is FOR SURE! Erica Zapfe- Ponderosa’s best server! Thank you for getting me that job. I wish you the best in your medical career and I hope to be seeing
you this summer. I’m glad we became friends this year. Bob Veerkamp- I really don’t have nothing to thank you for. You
fart all the time in Grossman’s class. Just because his name has “gross” in it does not mean you have to poop your pants
every day. I’m just kidding. You’re such a dork. I do want to thank you for making Econ and Government somewhat fun and
interesting. You’re a pretty good guy too. Tyler Richardson- Thanks for the parties at the lake and being a good friend to
T.J. and me. Mitchell Watkins- Yearbook, Bonfires, Boating trip to Lake Cumberland, Being my best friend ever since kindergarten you’re a good friend; I wish you the best and try to stay out of trouble. Liv Watkins- Oh track.. You getting mad
at me for beating you in long jump, you squirting water in Nick’s mouth but missing and hitting his whole face, being my
bus buddy, talks about Mitch, you and your mom fighting, being my friend in basketball, you’re hilarious! I’m going to miss
you. You have some tougher years to come. Senior year is not as bad as you think. Just make it fun and you’ll be fine! Love
ya & thanks for running track with me! Mrs. T- Yearbook was the best experience I’ve ever had. Thank you for being the
nicest and most caring teacher. Thank you for helping me through thick and thin. I wish you the best in life and always be
true to yourself! Don’t put up with people who don’t do anything for you! (Yearbook ESPECIALLY!) Mr Martini- You have
always been one of my favorite teachers, even though you like to pick on me. Just think, I know where you live now! Only
a short distance from my house! (: I’m sure I’ll be seeing you over summer, hopefully babysitting your children. Thanks for
being a cool teacher! Brooke Helms- You’re my little stalker! I wish you a great high school career and basketball seasons.
You are going to be one heck of a ball player! But do me a favor and run track! It is ten times
better than basketball! No DRAMA! Haha, love ya, girly!
—Rylie Buening
I leave all the conversations about our nerd games and shows to
Danny that we had in the ditch with all of our other nerd friends. I
also leave the fun memories throughout my senior year to the
school. I can’t leave my lunch table to anyone because I didn’t stay
to eat school lunch. To all the students that will be doing I.C.E next
year, it’s not as fun as it looks to leave and go to work everyday. To
I give my locker
guardian to Jordan.
next year’s publication class, I leave the food that Mrs. T will bring
in to bribe you with to work on your pages. Being at this school has
been great and I will miss it. To the rest of the underclassmen, make
sure you live up the time you have here
at this school and cherish all of your
friends you have made because one day
they might not be there. Don’t fight with
them or start drama because it isn’t
worth it. Losing a friend isn’t worth the
drama. And always remember…… We are
South!!!!!
