These pieces were carefully selected to enable babies to hear a variety of instruments with different tones and playing styles. This program is also unique in Taiwan for its “Kangaroo with a Joey” tickets. These tickets allow infants to listen to music comfortably from the warm embrace of their parents and enjoy a fresh experience with seats designed for parents and children together. In addition to receiving rave reviews, this activity also gives young parents, who are unable to attend social events because of their children, an opportunity to enjoy music together with their babies. It looks like there’s a new crowd of classical music fans in Kaohsiung! Jhihde Hall, Cultural Center Performer Trumpet soloist Sat. Sun. The program also includes a number of excellent pieces from the classic ballet Swan Lake, such as the Dance of the Little Swans and the Spanish Dance, which will make the children in the audience and their parents feel as if they are attending a lively banquet in a Russian castle. In addition, Andrea Giuffredi, an Italian trumpet player whose work straddles both classical and popular music, has also been invited to perform familiar Italian ballads and songs. Music by Performances for the whole family are being prepared for the 5th Annual Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival (KSAF) in 2014. Parents can bring their children and step together into the field of performing arts. A variety of parent-child programs will be held every month from March to July. Cultural activities appropriate for infants, children, and even adolescents will be conducted. Among these events, the Little Amadeus Baby Concert, which received popular acclaim upon its debut last year, will be held once again in May of this year. Choreographed by Babies Dancing to Trumpet Premiered in 1870, Coppelia is the most intriguing ballet. How did a peculiar doctor turn his favorite doll into a real girl? The KSAF hopes to continue to build an ideal site for children’s art education and to set a permanent foundation for the performing arts in Kaohsiung! Fri. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Ray is also noted for his works with photograms, which he called “rayographs” in reference to himself. With totally 156 works by Man Ray on display, this exhibiton is a comprehensive presentation of his artistic creation in different stages. It later on also became the inspiration for contemporary Asian artists. This current exhibition, curated by British curator Stephen McCoubrey, presents important works from the private collection of UBS. Spanning across the past half century, these works begin with the classic American Pop Art of the 60s, move on to the most influential European artists during the 80s and 90s, and conclude with the most exciting artists of the contemporary Asian art scene. Works of artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg demonstrate many different interpretations on the contemporary consumer culture with their diverse and accessible presentation methods. From past to present, from the classic to the avant garde, from the west to the east, these works invite us to reflect on our society and the everyday life. A view of the exhibition 1/25-5/11 ■Gallery 105 Pop Art Factory─ Heating‧Cooling‧Contemporary Art in Taiwan The exhibition intends to comb through the transformation and influence of the “Pop Art” spirit on Taiwan’s art development from two dimensions. The first one is to look at how this Western art movement has converged and merged with local objects and symbols in Taiwan from the historical perspective. This dimension also reflects the diversified facets of Taiwan’s history as a world factory. The second dimension is to look at how Taiwanese artists have “processed” and “reproduced” the forms and spirit of Pop Art, adding different kinds of brand-new and fun interpretations to its themes, materials and spirit. From this exhibition, viewers can appreciate how artists incorporate their careful observation of local living environments and contexts in their processing of fine art into something more appealing to the general public’s taste, and how artists play with symbols from folk culture, cartoons, politics, or business in creating many interesting and inspiring works that discuss the relationships among artistic creation, popular culture, social issues and consumerism. Undoubtedly, Liao’s print works are already well-known and well-discussed in Taiwan. However, it is only by looking at the full picture of Liao’s life as an artist that we can better understand this master and his art and then have deeper appreciation of its soul-touching beauty. This exhibition displays over 100 works created by Liao using different kinds of media such as print, oil painting and sketching. It is the first exhibition in Taiwan that takes an unprecedentedly comprehensive retrospective of Liao’s art, presenting a symphony of artistic creativity and life wisdom in front of viewers. Within just a few years, she curated many diversified exhibitions and created an abundance of works in different varieties. She received several awards both at home and abroad for her exhibition curation and artistic creation. In 2010, she was recognized with the 8th Taishin Arts Award for Visual Art. Born in Kaohsiung in 1966, Hsu died of illness in January 2013. Before she passed away, she donated the majority of her works to Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. This exhibition is held to commemorate this outstanding female artist who suffered a premature death, showcasing her works from 2001 to 2013. This exhibition is the first and also maybe the last of its kind to fully present Hsu’s works for viewers to appreciate her legacy in whole. Most of the participants in this activity over the past years are now still active artists and many are starting to gain recognition locally and internationally. Therefore, the Kaohsiung Awards have been widely regarded by all the enthusiastic artists as an important milestone in their artistic careers. The Kaohsiung Awards in 2014 attracted about six hundred artists from every corner of Taiwan who submitted works. After rounds of careful selection and review, five winners of the Kaohsiung Awards were selected; also, there were nine winners of “Excellent Work“ Award, three winners of Observer’s Award, and several winners of Honorable Mention. The winning works demonstrate different levels of artistic strength and diversity, rich in vibrant vigor of artistic creation. Showcasing all the winning works, this exhibition is an exciting feast of art that cannot be missed. Viewers are compelled to find pauses in the fast-changing time and space depicted in his works and slowly gaze at the seemingly familiar but strange images. In this process, there is a subtle tug-of-war between fast (the works) and slow (the viewers), between speed and pause. This kind of “slow vs. fast” contrast also echoes with the discussion of “tangible existence vs. Five circles ; 2010 ; Mixed media ; 54×39.5cm intangible existence” in his works. Behind each gift, there are often many emotions, thoughts and best wishes intertwined together. The Chinese title of this exhibition is homophonic with kau kau tînn, an expression from the Taiwanese dialect, which means “intertwined”. This is an ideal expression to represent the delicateness, flexibility and easiness to entangle of fibers. Based on the theme of textile art, this exhibition features installation works and other forms of artworks created by the invited artists using different kinds of natural or manmade fibers and other soft materials. The artists weave into their works their emotions, shared thoughts and best wishes as if they are preparing gifts for viewers. Do you want to know what “fibers” really are? Cotton fibers, paper mulberry bark fibers, silk threads, wool yarns, cowhide fibers, aluminum wires…. Do you know all these materials? Do you know how the artists can use fibers to create special gifts? Come and explore the beauty and fun of fiber art! Do it yourself and create your own special gifts for yourself, family and friends! Opening Hours: Tue. to Sun. 13:30-21:30 (closed on Mon.) A Home for Everyone - A Place to Live, not to Sleep The predecessor of Cishan Living Cultural Park is the Former Gushan Elementary School which is one of the only two historic school buildings during the Japanese Occupation in Kaohsiung. In 2000, after the School was relocated, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs restored the buildings and improved the landscape. Through the reutilization approach, the buildings now provide services for art exhibitions, bicycle rental and souvenir shops. The Park was transformed from a school campus to a living cultural park for residents and tourists. This lively and diverse arts space is continually shaped with the concepts of promoting "local arts" and "slow living in Cishan" along with music festival, art exhibitions, bicycle activities, a flea market and other recreations. Over the years, the Park has been subsidized by the local cultural museum project of the Ministry of Culture. The Bureau of Cultural Affairs has completed the building repairs and constructed the Story House. Together with other Cishan cultural attractions, they promote local culture tourism. ■Performing unit: Théâtre Tout à Trac ■Tickets: NT$600, 900, 1200, 1500, 2000 (enquire at the NTCH Ticketing System) Procrastinating Alice holed herself up in her father's study with her head in the clouds in lieu of doing her homework.
