The myths and mysteries surrounding the painter and his painting are evergreen topics in art history and contemporary culture, and have launched numberless quests and dreams. The Leonardo-Mona Lisa-The Myths , which is being held in collaboration with Italy's Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci, presents some of the heavyweight oil paintings made by da Vinci and his collaborators in the wake of the Renaissance, including the third Virgin of the Rocks works judged to have been jointly created by da Vinci and his collaborators. This exhibition also includes a wide range of classic adaptations of the Mona Lisa by such modern masters of art as Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Leger, and Philippe Halsman. The exhibition is expected to include 125 sublime works, including paintings and physical models. We will take you on a tour of the past 500 years and show you some of the most classic artistic marvels from the Renaissance to the present. Together with the Leonardo: Mona Lisa—The Myths exhibition, KMFA launched the “Mona Lisa Made in Taiwan” project. In this project of contemporary art creation, 19 contemporary artists were invited to celebrate KMFA’s 19th anniversary by using their humorous and creative artistic rhetoric to create works using diversified creative media. Their works is on display in this special exhibition to demonstrate the exciting sparks from the collision and communication between Taiwanese and Western concepts of ideal beauty. This exhibition also provides an analytical review of these galleries' histories and features, and teases out the context of the development of galleries in Kaohsiung. He emerged as a rising artist with his welded copper paintings in the late 1960s. In addition to artistic creation, he was dedicated to building and expanding a healthy environment for Kaohsiung’s art development, including establishing a painting association, opening the first professional private gallery in Kaohsiung, and founded an art magazine. Therefore, he has been reputed as “Pioneer of Modern Painting in Kaohsiung”. Lee is a man of melancholy with few words. His personal characteristics of “self-alienation” and “self-isolation” are fully reflected in his works. In mid-1990s, he chose the lifestyle of semi-seclusion and started to keep a comfortable distance away from the hustle and bustle of the mundane world. This exhibition of his works is something many have been looking forward to, showcasing over 100 of Lee’s works which include several representative works of different stages of his art development. This exhibition is a comprehensive and thorough presentation of Lee’s life as an artist. Lee Chau-chin ; Subconscious Worries ; Oil on canvas ; Collection of the artist ; 130×161cm ; 1998 This exhibition tells different stories about Mona Lisa , guiding viewers to meet different kinds of Mona Lisa in different times and spaces. In addition, there are imaginary and childlike reinterpretations of Mona Lisa by contemporary Taiwanese illustrators, adding more fun into the story-telling of this exhibition. There are also outfits especially designed for Mona Lisa by contemporary designs. This exhibition is intended to provide children opportunities of exploring different artistic styles and creative materials and coming up with their unique re-interpretations of Mona Lisa through their hand-on experiences and observations. 2012/10/6-2014/2/9 ■CMA Galleries 201 Public Art for All 2013/3/30-2014/5/25 ■CMA Galleries 202 Playground for Kids: Indigenous Contemporary Art of Taiwan "Play "and "games" are part of most kids' childhood memories, and are among the happiest moments in the process of growing up. After the Second World War, it changed with the times, at one point becoming Fongshan Guest House, which was used to investigate and detain suspects during the White Terror period. Later, it became the Navy Discipline Center and the Navy Mingde Discipline Center, responsible for disciplining recalcitrant soldiers. As the Center has taken on so many different faces throughout its history, it was named a national-ancient monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2010 to preserve this special military space; covering a total area of 27 hectares. After the merger with Kaohsiung County in 2011, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government worked with the Association of Military Housing Community for Cultural Development, turning the center, previously protected by being closed to the public, into a green leisure space in order to allow the public to explore the mysterious site. It is open to the public on weekends and national holidays and guided tours are provided. The Center, which originally revolved around military affairs and national defense, has slowly been transformed by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs and local groups: aside from welcoming the community to participate in environmental protection, it is also hoped that visitors will listen to the Center's old stories, and savor the Japanese perspective on architectural aesthetics. You will find that this once forbidding space also boasts craft techniques related to architectural aesthetics and dynamics. ■Opening hours: Weekends and national holidays 09:00-17:00 (free to visitors) ■Tel.: Miss Qiu, 0920129479 ■Address: Shengli Road, Fongshan District, Kaohsiung City (beside Chung Cheng Elementary School) Taiwan Southern International Communication Platform (TSICP) Backpacker Platform Blog: clingcheng.blogspot.com Email: [email protected] Mobile: 0928737701 / Pol Addr: 12F-2, NO.311, Jhongshan 1st Rd. In his youth, he displayed a talent for woodcut art. His woodcuts have a rich human tone. “A Fearsome Inspection,” one of his representative works, depicts the 228 Incident, bearing witness to this tragedy through art, and also bringing misfortune upon himself: Huang was imprisoned in 1951, and, as the Nationalist Government believed him to be a communist rebel, they sentenced him to execution by firing squad when he was 32. His grave was discovered in Liuzhangli 40 years later. This exhibition looks back on Huang Rong-can and his deeds, again awakening memories of that period. It is molded to display different local characteristics, complementing hydrology, geography, and other conditions, nurturing different industries and settlement cultures. In the agricultural era, people lived amid the water and grass, and developed settlements following earth and water. The clay was trampled underfoot, after undergoing adjustment with water and being quenched by fire, became solid brick, which was built into a house in which to take shelter from the elements. This exhibition begins from the soil of Kaohsiung, discussing how people used the characteristics of soil to develop ceramics, and how ceramics flourished, declined and changed. It recounts the development of the southern ceramic brick and tile industry from the Japanese Colonial Period to the early period after the Retrocession of Taiwan, creating a chain of memories by linking stories of people and settlements. We’re sure that the public will be introduced to the production and the local culture accumulated within traditional bricks and tiles, and will reconsider the connection between modern people and earth. ■Performing unit: Natus Cantorum ■Tickets: NT$200, 300, 500 (enquire at the ERA Ticket System) ■Performing unit: Shu Fen Taiwanese Opera Troupe ■Tickets: NT$300, 500, 900, 1200, 1500, 2000 (enquire at the ArtsTicket System) Gallery Cieding and Hunei districts are stated in the north-west of Kaohsiung, where Erren River and Tainan City meet. In the past, they were separated into the two sides of Jockan (The inner sea of Jockan), one of Taiwan's southwest seashore three Great Ancient Lagoons: Cieding is a sandbank which borders the sea, while Hunei is a dune plain which borders on the land. The development of the two areas can be traced back to the 17th century, when fishermen from Fuzhou Province gradually settled Cieding. The Ming-era military garrison policy made many soldiers settle in and develop Hunei, a state of affairs which has continued to the present day – many of the inhabitants of Cieding fish, while agriculture is prominent in Hunei, while the great fish-ponds developed in Jockan Lagoon are a sight common to both Cieding and Hunei.
