Events/Activities for March 2016
A big IF in March is, “Will there be any riding?” The answer is YES, if the roads are clear, wind’s
not gusting more than 15mph, the sun is shinning, the temp is higher than 30º… 😏 We’ve
ridden in January and February, March will be better…

Easter Sunday
There has always been an issue about starting times. When the time
states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00.
Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up
at 7:30?
THAT is the big question and is up to debate.
Your input is important here…🤔

We had our first (annual..?But) Bowling Challenge and what a great time. I think Jim had the highest
score. I think Dar had the highest score of the women. I don't know who had the lowest one. But I
think that was me. But, good pizza, good drinks, good friends… Maybe next year we’ll have different
chapters participating in this Bowling Challenge…
In next month’s newsletter, I’ll have a report about Wingless Weekend. We hope to see a lot of you
there.
In March, we have our anniversary party. It starts at 2:00, giving more travel time for some of you.
Check page 8 for details.
According to some weather people, Spring will be early this year. That means that we will hopefully
get a lot of rides in. We have ridden every month so far this winter. We are looking forward to a long
riding season and are planning a lot of rides. I hope you will make some or all of them, whichever
you can do. Let us know about some interesting rides to go on.
The new ARC schedule is on page 10. Sign up early if you need to renew or if you never have taken
these.

HAPPY St. PATRICK’S**HAPPY SPRING***HAPPY EASTER
It’s getting close to RIDING SEASON again! Not that some of us have taken advantage of the mild
winter and have never stopped riding anyway! So, there is lots to do and lots toting about. Our
chapter’s anniversary party is this month. So, pease RSVP by March 15! All info was in Feb.’s
newsletter and is in this newsletter! And Do Not forget that our 2016 Couple of the year will be
chosen at the party. So, you will have to join us to find out who will be chosen this year!
The Michigan District Staff will announce the chapter who will become THE CHAPTER OF THE
YEAR. Howard has put in a lot of time into this effort, along with all of you who participated in our
chapter events! When we return from Wingless Weekend, we are HOPING that our “Family of
Friends”, our Chapter MI-G, the “ridingest” chapter and the most fun will win the coveted award!
We shall see!
Wishing all of you and your family a Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Happy Spring, and especially a
very Happy Easter!

Riders vs Co-Riders
Reflecting on how Jane and I ride our Goldwing trike "Plum Lucky", I'm usually the
one that does the most driving. As we ride along whether in a group or just out for a
ride in the evening, there are some things that "Bug" me once in a while. I'll hear:
pay more attention to the road, or you're getting too close to the center line… At first
I'm thinking, I am paying attention or I'm not too close to the line, but she is my codriver and usually is correct, even though I don't want to admit it. How many of us
have heard these words or something similar while riding our beloved Wings? I bet
there would be a lot of hands raised in the air.
Thanks to my co-rider our journey is a lot safer with her on the back. It's easy to
forget just how important their role is in keeping us both safe so we can ride again
another day. I've had the opportunity of being that co-rider and then it really sinks in.
Man this job is important for the two of us. A second pair of eyes and ears to let the
driver know of upcoming vehicles, deer, debris in the road, birds coming from our
blind side and yes keeping the driver focused on driving safely and not looking at the
scenery, pretty girls, wild animals nice houses and being able to signal the bikes
behind to slow down or avoid that road kill just ahead.
A big round of applause for all those co-riders out there, where would we be without
them?
Respectfully Submitted

Wind Noise & Hearing Loss Revisited
Back in December at our Gathering, Mike Nosanov gave a talk about the dangers of wind noise and
the problem of hearing loss. He showed his custom ear buds and demonstrated how they fit and
what they did to combat this hearing loss problem.
I had already been using sets of earbuds, MeElectronics ($49), Sony ($10), etc. These plugged into
my Edsets Universal Adapter (5M - to 5F) which allows earbuds to comment to the GL audio
system. The problem with this type of earbud, and I have tried several different brands, was the fit
inside the helmet. On several occasions, when putting my helmet on, the earbud would come out
and I would have to put it back in and start over. Several times while riding down the road I would
turn my head and the earbud would slip partially out causing much discomfort. The sound was
okay, but the fit just wasn’t right.
Over the Christmas holiday, I bought the same model that Mike had demonstrated. I hooked them
up to my IPhone, my computer, my compact portable radio to test them out. The fit, being custom
molded, was superb. The sound quality was something more than expected. I was hearing highs
and lows that my other earbuds couldn’t match. I had to try them out on my motorcycle.
On February 7, I gave them a serious tryout. The roads were clear, weather in the 30’s. It took me a
moment to put the earbuds in my ears and slipped my Shoei modular on with absolutely no
problem. I “shook” my head to see what would happen, nothing. The earbuds stayed put. I took
them out, ready for the trial. With no earbuds in, I got on the expressway, 70 mph, music playing in
my J&M headset. My volume was turned up to #16 to compensate for the wind noise. After 15
miles, I stopped for the next step.
I put the custom earbuds in, slipped the helmet back on, back on the xway for another 15 miles. I
immediately turned the volume down to 4. I could hear very clearly every note. Wind noise was
gone. I could still hear some traffic noise, but it was nothing like before.
I finished a 90 mile ride throughout the country, visited some towns never before visited, and pulled
into my driveway with compete satisfaction of my new earbuds. No pain, no ringing in my ears,
good fit, good sounds, good time! These were costly, but in reality I only wish I had purchased them
much earlier. I’m looking forward to a great riding season.

Here is a great App for your smart phone. It’s called Mi Drive by the State of Michigan
- Department of Technology, Management and Budget. You can get it from ITunes.
Use this handy Mi Drive app to check real-time road and traffic information about
Michigan (M), Interstate (I) and US routes across the state before getting behind the
wheel. It's brought to you by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
With Mi Drive, you can:
Scroll and zoom an interactive map
See real-time traffic camera views and changeable message signs on major routes
Click on traffic incident and construction icons for more information
Check real-time, color-coded speeds on major routes
Zoom into any area of the map, using either your current location or selected cities
and zip codes
Find rest areas and Welcome Centers across Michigan
Locate MDOT carpool lots
Check out mapped active or planned construction by route number or county
Locate airports and roadside parks across the state
See Upper Peninsula road camera views
Turn layers on and off to personalize your view. Your settings will be remembered.
Select views of major travel corridors (I-94, I-75, I-196 and 8 others)
Report potholes on Michigan (M), Interstate (I) and US routes
Link to National Weather Service forecasts by city name or zip code.
I’ve got it on my IPhone and have used it. Try it out and tell me what you think. If you
have another App on your phone that you think would be very helpful during the riding
season, let me know.
