We Welcome Spring at CVAC - Carmel Valley Athletic Club
Notes from The General Manager
We Welcome Spring at CVAC
It truly feels like
spring this April.
Last month brought
warmer than usual
Axel Binneboese
temperatures and
General Manager
much sunshine
with very little
rain. Those who keep an eye on the
amount of rainfall know that so far
we are off from last year and need
more rain to come. Yet the view of the
greenery in the Valley is truly magnificent. So fresh and intense is the
impression of the spring green look
everywhere in Carmel Valley.
It also feels like spring in our local hospitality industry as we witness Quail
Lodge Resort & Golf Club becoming a
resort again. Following an extensive
overhaul of the guest rooms and public
spaces on the resort end, they have
reopened for business. The resort
looks fresh and ready for this coming
tourism season. It is nice to have our
neighbor active again. Refuge will benefit quite a bit from having Quail Lodge
operating as a resort again and we
now have a hotel close by where we
can send our Refuge guests to stay
the night.
As spring break for Carmel Unified
Schools is coming up, we are proud
to introduce our first “Kids Kamp” to
CVAC families. The time of the “Kids
Kamp” will coincide with spring break
from April 8-12. Kids will be engaged
daily in activities and lunch will be
provided by Aqua Terra. For more
information see the Kids Klub page in
this CVAC Newsletter.
You may have noticed that the Vyykn
water machine is back in operation.
We finally got some service on the machine and it is now operational. There
are a few hiccups still related to a long
refill cycle when it is empty, but at least
we are dispensing again.
second wind at the Club in recent
months. Our teams are competitive
and our weekend play occupies up to
four courts with drop in players. Mike
has an active adult tennis instruction
schedule with clinics and private lesson spots and he is busier than ever.
David is in the midst of the Carmel
Middle School tennis team season
(they play here at CVAC) and he has
the usual high level of activity on our
back courts after school on weekdays.
Paige fills her bottle now that
the Vyykn water machine is back
in operation.
I was surprised last month when our
CVAC Membership Director, Deanna,
announced to me that she is looking
for a professional change and expressed her desire to move on. Deanna has been by my side all my CVAC
life and I really enjoyed having her
represent the Club in all things membership. I wish Deanna only the best
in her future and I am sure that she
earned the right to take it a bit easier
going forward.
Kristy is our new Interim CVAC
Membership Sales associate
We were fortunate to promote an interim successor for Deanna from within
and I am proud to introduce Kristy as
our new Interim CVAC Membership
Sales associate. Kristy will be in this
position until we found a permanent
replacement.
I really feel tennis has received a
We did our first CVAC hike of the year
and kept it moderate and to a short
distance for the start of the season. At
the halfway point, we did some partner
stretching which was refreshing. In my
case, I opted out of the stretching as
my hike partner was a 110 lb German
Sheppard and I could not really get
him to cooperate on that level.
I came across an interesting fact when
I spoke to my family in Berlin, Germany. They were having deep winter
conditions (heavy snow and below
freezing temperatures) all the way
through the Easter Holiday, which is
highly unusual. Did you know that in
1816, summer never came for either
Western Europe or the Eastern US
Seaboard? Due to a rather large volcano eruption in Indonesia which took
almost three years to clear our atmosphere, winter conditions with subfreezing temperatures at night where
common even in August! I thank the
sunrays every morning for warming my
face when I take my dog for an early
walk.
Spring is my favorite time of the year.
Sincerely,
Axel Binneboese

Make April your month to participate!
We have a great monthly event program with something for everyone.
Weather you participate in workshops, exercise class launches, play a card
game, have a date while the kids are entertained or go hiking with your fellow
CVAC members, we have a program for all!
With spring break for most of the school kids in Carmel, we hope for some
great weather to see you out on the pool and at the café. To support you we
launch our first Kids Kamp of the year where our Kids Klub team set up activities and provide an AquaTerra lunch for your little ones.
Congratulations to John Pira on pulling the double taking the first month and
again taking home the top prize in March. Mr. Stan Clark was the runner up
and Glenn Sadowsky came third. Jim Herhily was also awarded a prize but
just got to stand next to the podium as the other three wouldn’t let him on.
Come on ladies of CVAC, dethrone this male dominated result in April Poker– you can do it.
The hike in April will up a bit in terms of impact compared to March. We are
planning an about 5 mile hike with moderate to strenuous impact. Hope for
great weather and bring your camera as spring is soon over and the luscious
green will fade more towards summer brown soon.
Your CVAC team!

Goodbye Deanna, We will miss you!
Dear Friends,
My feelings are quite ambivalent as I
write this; I'm anticipating a wonderful
journey ahead but I know I will miss so
much of what I have known and loved
over my years at CVAC! My identity is
so wrapped up in all things CVAC! I try
to "reign it in" when I'm "out and about"
in the Monterey Peninsula but I never
miss an opportunity to share why we are
the best!! As I reminisce about all of the
changes and happenings over these past
5 years (in addition to the 20+ years
of my membership prior to that), I am
overwhelmed by all of the wonderful
friendships I've formed as well as seeing
that develop within our membership
here at "the local's resort". The staff at CVAC is the best and the
day would not be complete without special acknowledgements to Audrey, Terri,
Judy, Donna, Cristin, Annie, Susan,
Mike, David and Antonio for making it
so easy for me to do my job well! I also
want to thank the McKays: Heidi and
Scot and their very terrific family. It's truly not all the amazing improvements, upgrades and additions though;
it's YOU, the members that make this
such an exceptional experience! Every
day I see kids that I've known here since
they were so young; they're becoming
talented tennis players, swimmers and
all around wonderful human beings.
Of course their parents have the most
to do with that but the CVAC community environment contributes to that as
well. Hardly a day has gone by where
I am not inspired by a member! Many
reasons, many stories; a favorite I'd like
to share with her permission is Lois
(possibly our most senior member). At
93 years young, she still comes to the
club 3 to 5 times a week; she recently
dropped the tennis portion of her membership. When I asked her why, she
assured me she hadn't stopped playing,
just preferred playing elsewhere as her
game had become a bit slow for the
CVAC courts. You go girl!!
We, I suppose I mean "you", are part
of a wonderful community. It's validating to receive all the great awards:
best athletic club, best spa, best new
business, from the readers of Monterey
County Weekly and the Pine Cone. Well
deserved but it's really about "YOU"
and the quality experience that a CVAC
membership offers that makes us the
best!
I know you will welcome Kristy Busch
as my successor so she too will experience the same pleasures I've enjoyed
working with you, our CVAC members! Thank you for a wonderful chapter in
my life!
Deanna

Recipe: Tangelos on Flatbread
Winter citrus is at the peak of season right now. One of my favorite citrus fruits is the Minneola tangelo. Tangelos
are a cross between a pumelo and a tangerine they are a beautiful balance of sweet, tart, bitter and are really juicy.
Try this flat bread idea on the grill or in the oven. Also try substitutions like spinach for arugula or goat cheese for
feta.
Ingredients:
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 ea store bought flatbread (or try naan or pita)
2 ea Minneola tangelos*, peeled and segmented
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/4 cup kalamata olives, sliced in half
salt & pepper
1/3 cup baby arugula
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400° F.
In a small bowl, mix garlic and olive oil and brush on flatbread.
Sprinkle flatbread with orange segments, feta cheese, and olives. Season flatbread with salt and pepper.
Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and top with arugula.
Cut into pieces and serve immediately.
