Talk about rolling up your sleeves! Each of these women saw a need in her Charlotte, N.C.,
neighborhood and filled it. EBONY magazine and the makers of Pine-Sol® cleaners honored
them in August at the latest Sisterspeak® Luncheons event. Each woman’s nonprofit organization
received a grant from the makers of Pine-Sol® cleaners.
Ruth Amerson
Founder, CEO – Another Choice for
Black Children
Another Choice for Black Children
was North Carolina’s first AfricanAmerican adoption agency focusing
on recruiting adoptive homes for
African-American and special-needs
children. Founded and opened in
1995, the agency has successfully
united more than 600 children with
families. Programs include support
groups, socialization groups for teens
and a dream-nurturing team.
Pamela Hampton-Garland
Founder – Scholar Bound
Pamela Hampton-Garland knows that earning a college degree is
no easy feat. She was the first member in her family to attend college
and graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Scholar Bound focuses on
assisting individuals to enter college successfully. The program helps
high school students with low GPAs improve their grades through
tutoring, mentoring, support and motivation.

Jennifer Lewis-Hall, author of “Life Changes,” and Diane Amos, The Pine-Sol Lady, shared words of wisdom and
encouragement with the audience in Charlotte.
Valisha Kelly
Founder – U.N.I.T.Y. of NC
Better known as Ms. V, Valisha Kelly founded U.N.I.T.Y. of NC in
Fayetteville in 2004. The human-services agency and community
center for youth and family development fosters social awareness
and builds character among the state’s youth. Parents, families,
educators, businesses and community leaders provide opportunities
for education and community service.
Sheila Kirby
Founder – Fill My Cup, Inc.
After a successful corporate career, Sheila Kirby is helping others
succeed by learning to read. Since 2002, her organization has offered
adult literacy, adult basic education, GED preparation and life skills
courses to the inner city communities of Charlotte and Mecklenburg
County. Programs include English as a Second Language, Literacy
on Wheels and tutoring.
Jamila White
Founder, president – GUILTY, Inc.
“You cannot hide from the realization that we give up on our youth
and don’t give them a chance to succeed,” says Jamila White. She
founded GUILTY, Inc., to give youth a fighting
chance at a brighter future. GUILTY means
Giving U Inspirational Lives Through our
Youth. Programs include mentoring, tutoring,
athletics, job skills and life skills training.

Through Song Award
Ratasha E. Huff
Teaching artist, fellow — Afro American
Cultural Center
Working with schools and community
organizations, Ratasha Huff explores how
music and other art forms can open minds
and transform lives. She has worked with
the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s Drama
for Healthy Living, a substance-abuse and
violence-prevention program for teens. Huff
plans to attend the Berklee College of Music
in Boston this year.
