A simple 30 minute workout can change a bad day into a good day. Usually, a far more productive day. So why aren’t more people doing it? First, what is it about exercise that makes us feel better? When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life. So imagine starting your day that way. After setting your alarm clock one hour earlier, and with gym bag ready to go, you’re out the door and on your way to your early morning kettlebell class. After a somewhat challenging but successful class and feeling completely exhilirated, you grab a shower and you’re on your way to start your busy day. This simple 30 minute morning workout can help keep your mind sharp and your mood merry as you navigate through your day. Or, upon hearing your alarm clock do you grimace, think about all the reasons you cannot possibly squeeze that workout into your schedule today and hit the snooze button? Usually, if this is the case, the decision not to workout will haunt you for the rest of the day. So here are some tips to help you get out of bed and make exercise a vital part of your life. When we try to start exercising, we think of all the excuses for not doing it and all the things that have gotten in the way before. Getting fit starts to seem overwhelming. And that makes it feel stressful. Before long, we don’t want to do it anymore. What we need to do is find our personal motivation to get moving. Is it weight loss? Health? Depression? Setting an example for our children? Set realistice goals when it comes to exercise. 30 minutes a day, 3 - 4 days a week at first can seem overwhelming so start on a smaller scale and work up to it. Once you start to achieve your small goals you will more than likely want to increase your time or intensity as you begin to build some confidence and gain strength. Don’t always think of it as exercise. You are surrounded by opportunity to be more active so choose activities that you enjoy. Whether it is running, weight lifting, exercise classes, yoga or walking your dog. You are more likely to do it if you enjoy it. Take the time to plan your exersice into your weekly schedule. Seems like the number one excuse for not exercising these days is that everyone is so ‘crazy busy’! If I had a quarter for everytime I heard that one! Sit down at the start of the week and set aside some time for yourself. I guarantee you will be a lot happier and more energetic if you do. You are more likely not to get those workouts in if they are not scheduled. Sometimes, with the best planning we find that our workout time has been pushed aside for something more pressing. We naturally think of this as failure and start to associate exercise with failure. This is when we need to do an attitude adjustment and remind ourselves that sometimes the best laid plans don’t always workout and tomorrow is a new day. Not sure where to begin? Drop by Towne Fitness. We are 24 hour access facility right here in town. We are staffed 6 days a week and offer a wide variety of exercise classes including; bootcamp, TRX, kettlebell and LeBarre. All levels of fitness are welcome. What are you waiting for? It may be one of the best decisions you make today.
