OTTAWA OSTOMY NEWS
November 2014
Greetings all,
Today is one of those dreary fall days; cold, windy and buckets of rain. On the
positive side, my morning walking path is blanketed with a multi coloured carpet
of leaves with the wonderful autumn odors that are a mainstay amid all the
changes that we experience on a daily bases. It’s all part of our changing seasons.
Change! As ostomates, sometimes, I think we have written the book on it. We have had to
adapt in so many ways, both physiologically & emotionally. As we all know, for most of us,
change is not always welcome, however, when we take a step back and look at the options, for
me at least, its’ a no brainer. I am continually amazed at how innovative ostomates are in
dealing with our everyday challenges whether it be dealing with recurring issues and
frustrations or putting notches on our bucket list. This month’s meeting was a really good
example. Over 40 ostomates, friends and partners attended a session on leakage. Cathy Downs
provided a well thought out PowerPoint on Leakage from the perspective of an ET nurse. It was
refreshing, as we usually look inward in dealing with our appliances. After the presentation,
there were three small groups that discussed challenges that one member of the group was
having. The questions asked & suggested solutions were both textbook and sometimes out of
the box, and they all made sense. Afterward, I joined in the fellowship and was so pleased to
hear what people are up to. Back to work, travelling, the honey-do list etc. We are truly
resilient!
Pembroke also hosted a meeting this month with 33 attendees. Pretty remarkable as the first
meeting a couple of years ago there were only 6 or 8 from the area. I spoke briefly on The ADP
initiative by the Canadian Colorectal Cancer Association and offered a report of the biannual
conference in Newfoundland. Doug Graham gave a presentation on OOO.
Although still challenged by the lack of support in Renfrew county, steps are being made with
some additional ET clinics as well as training to the CCAC nursing team in the area. More
resources are required, and local ostomates are working hard to raise awareness of the needs
of their ostomy community.
United ostomy of Canada has made changes, too. See page 1 for their new bilingual name,
logo and tagline.

Musings...
With the coming of Remembrance Day and
the current events in and around Ottawa,
I will let the words of Debbie Holick speak for me.
In Gratitude of Silence
Silent now the soldiers sleep, their tales long laid to
rest.
I knew them not yet still I weep and place a poppy
o'er my breast.
They were husbands, brothers, fathers, sons; so
valiantly they fought.
On shores stained red, on hands and knees; it was
our freedom that they sought.
Couageously they stood their ground but freedom
carries a cost.
Thousands of men were wounded and countless
lives were lost.
So in gratitude of silence and all those who have
served,
sleep now, you have earned it. Your peace is well
deserved.

Hope to see you at the monthly meeting,
Take good care,

Reusable night drainage bags must be washed
thoroughly after each use and changed after a
maximum of one week. Vinegar or Dettol can be
inserted using a syringe, small funnel or an empty

The following is an excerpt from Shaz’s Ostomy Pages: The Bend In The Road: http://www.ostomates.org/bend.html Parts
will be featured in the next few editions of Ottawa Ostomy News.
Psychologically Coping With An Ostomy -By Rochelle Manor-Bullock, Ph.D. Licensed Psychologist
"A bend in the road is not the end of the road, if you remember to take the turn"
This phrase, and title of Joan Lunden's book of principles for dealing with change, characterises what it takes to
adapt to change: A New Perspective.
Having an ostomy requires not just a new lifestyle that incorporates changing an
appliance or chewing food more carefully. It requires a new perspective of
ourselves and the concept of wholeness.
Assumptions About Life
Our culture teaches us that we are entitled to certain things: health, wealth, beauty, fitness, comfort, pleasure
and power. Some people learn early that, because of their skin colour, religious heritage, place of birth, or
physical deformities or handicaps that they are not as privileged. But for many, we grown up with these
assumptions that we are OK and nothing bad will happen to us.
When tragedy strikes for the first time, it brings all the trauma of a world-view shattered. Suddenly, all we grew
to trust and assume is challenged. Perhaps I am vulnerable to pain, loss and discrimination. Grief is a multi-stage,
multi-dimensional process that brings intense feelings and questions:

Meetings
Can any of you relate?? Taken from Shaz’s Ostomy Pages:
“Picture yourself in the boardroom, surrounded by
executive types in their suits, ties and somber
attitudes. All is going fine until there is a quiet
moment during the meeting when everyone is contemplating a major
point made by one of the executives, when out of the blue, the little
beggar on your abdomen decides to sing an aria. Ileostomies do
make noise. This is a fact. I have never figured out how ostomies
time their vocal outbursts to occur during a 30 second lapse in an
important business meeting. Happens every time. (Hey, you never
know, maybe what they're saying makes more sense than the others
in attendance at the meeting. I'll have to contemplate that one.) Just
for information purposes only, I checked with Midas Muffler, and they
don't make any kind of muffler for this kind of system.”

Remembrance Day
http://www.remembrancedaycanada.com/
The poppy's significance to Remembrance Day
is a result of Canadian military physician John
McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields. The poppy
emblem was chosen because of the poppies
that bloomed across some of the worst
battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their red
colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed
of trench warfare. A Frenchwoman, Anna E.
Guérin, introduced the widely used artificial
poppies given out today. Some people choose
to wear white poppies, which emphasises a
desire for peaceful alternatives to military action.

Self-care
For people facing an ostomy, most have addressed these questions related to the illness that brought them to the
point of surgery. Whether it was Crohns, Colitis, Cancer or accident, something challenged the assumption of
health and fitness. Living with illness reveals our vulnerability, facing possible death, dealing with loss of ability.
From a medical perspective, it is easy to say that an ostomy will help you to feel better and improve quality of
life. For most people this is true. The pain and inconvenience of the disease will be gone. But while an ostomy
can restore health and wellness to the physical body, how we cope psychologically will determine how well we
recover from the trauma/illness/surgery/change.
Facing The Fears
An ostomy is a mixed blessing. It is a medical miracle that offers restored health and wellness, energy, activities.
But it leaves a permanent scar and reminder of damage.
When someone (or a loved one) faces ostomy surgery, there are medical fears and questions:
"How bad will the pain be?"
"What are the possible complications?"
"How will I learn to use and change the appliance?"
"How do I find a good surgeon?"
Fortunately, these questions can easily be answered by a Stoma Therapy Nurse. It is the emotionally based fears
and questions that endure long after leaving the hospital.

Project Coordinator: Astrid Graham
Help OOO… 613 829-6332
November 2014
Please donate unused products and
provide financial help. Please contact the
Project Coordinator, Astrid Graham, to
make arrangements for donations.
Below is just one of the many letters received by our Ottawa Ostomy Outreach project….
Dear Astrid,
My name is Seth and I am 56 years old from Ghana, West Africa. I received your contact when I was soliciting
assistance from other people who could be of help to save my situation.
I had intestinal tumor and was admitted for surgery last year September, 2013 at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana.
During the surgery, the doctors created a two-way colostomy. I also had an infection of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on
my right leg on my sick bed and I am put on warfarin as a result, I sometimes feel numbness in both the hands and legs
and I am asked to take celecoxib 200mg which we cannot get here. I was on the ward for six months before discharge. I
have been using the colostomy bag since then. Now I find it difficult to get some of the bags due to its size, scarcity and
financial constraints.
In search of relief, I talked to a Health Care office and from the discussion they had run out of stock for the required
size or any size I could use. She therefore directed that my contact with you would be of great relief from my situation,
hence my plea.
The attached is the picture of the created colostomy.
These are my problems and you being a health professional should assess and add any other item that would be found
useful to me, please. Thanks for your consideration and assistance.
Seth
As we can see, the stomas are very large and unfortunately the surgeon
created the two stomas far too close to be able to use a normal size flange
and manage well. After talking to an ET, I created a parcel for him and
gave him the ET’s suggestions. The parcel left Ottawa on October 2, 2014.
After receiving our donation I hope his life will improve
I mustache you a question,
but I'll shave it for later.

Healthy Homemade Pumpkin
Spice Latte
http://www.eatingbirdfood.com/2012/10/healthyhomemade-pumpkin-spice-latte/
8 ounces brewed coffee (or 1-2 shots of
espresso)
½ cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
3 Tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
½ teaspoon vanilla
2-3 drops of liquid stevia (or sweetener
of choice)
sprinkle of cinnamon
http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/colectomy/multimedia/
colostomy/img-20007593
In a cup or sauce pan, mix together
almond milk and pumpkin. Cook on
medium heat on the stove top or
microwave for 30-45 seconds.
Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, spices
and sweetener, place in a cup and use a
frother to foam the milk. You can also use
a blender - just process for 30 seconds or
until foamy.
Pour coffee into a large mug, add
the foamy milk mixture on
top. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Enjoy!
Pancaking happens when there is a
vacuum in the stoma bag and the bag
sticks together. This stops the output
from dropping to the bottom of the bag
and can block the filter. There is then
a risk that the pouch will be pushed off
the abdomen.
What can you do to prevent
pancaking?
Blowing air into the pouch before
putting it on will help stop a vacuum
from occurring. In addition, a drop of
oil or lubricant in the pouch will help
the output to get to the bottom of the
bag.

“People living with IBD too often face their conditions in silence, and during Crohn’s and Colitis
Awareness Month we encourage patients to speak up about their symptoms so that we can work
towards quicker diagnosis times and earlier treatment,” says Dr. Kevin Glasgow, CCFC’s Chief Executive
Officer.
“Canada is home to many of the world leaders in IBD research and clinical practice ,” adds Dr. Glasgow.
“I encourage every Canadian to Get Gutsy this November by learning about IBD and realizing that
together we can make a positive difference in the lives of many thousands of Canadians.”

 Fear others not accepting the ostomy
 Being seen as damaged or defective
 Losing sexuality (not attractive)
 Fear of being "found out" (odour, accident)
 Fear of having to change (clothing style, job, activities)
 Fear of being out of control
It is interesting to note that most of these emotional fears are really about how others treat us.
The Key Is Your Attitude
"When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." Victor Frankel.
How people face change and fear is somewhat determined by their personalities. It is extremely difficult, if not
impossible, to go from a cantankerous, bitter, grumpy person to one who easily copes with pain and change with a
positive spirit. But the more we know about ourselves and the more we are willing to be open to change, the better
our resiliency and coping will be.
"The good news is that the bad news can be turned into good news when you change your attitude." Robert
Schuller.
Psychologists have developed numerous theories to describe how our thoughts/emotions/actions are interrelated to
one another. A change in any part of the system automatically influences change in other areas. If one focuses on
the emotionally based fears listed above, life will be a miserable experience. But, if we can think positively and
take care of ourselves positively, the positive emotions of acceptance will come.
We all know that a positive attitude is a good thing. But in times of change and transition, it can be critical.
Emotional and physical healing is enhanced when one thinks positively. Research on brain chemicals and cognition
levels reveals that positive thoughts release endorphins (like those released during a "runner's high") while negative
thoughts release the chemicals seen during major depressive episodes. Positive thinking alone can't pull someone
out of a major depressive episode, but for many, a daily dose of positive thinking can get us through a lot of stress.
