Dear Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters
The year 2009 presented extraordinary difficult recession-driven challenges to Big
Brothers Big Sisters as our volunteers, children, families, staff and donors all faced
tough financial times in their own personal lives. We, as an agency, were forced to look
at the big picture, reevaluate our strategies and look for motivation in the most important part of our agency…OUR KIDS! In all the years’ ups and downs, we stayed true to
our mission and focused our efforts on serving the youth of Greater Birmingham in
need of positive adult role models in their lives. By doing this we were able to both increase our match goal and meet our financial goal for the year.
We believe our programs make us a preventative agency rather than a reactive one.
We strongly believe in providing positive role models to youth in need before they fall
into that “at risk” category that so many are quick label and judge before giving them a
real chance at life. We have seen time and time again the research which points to the
powerful, positive and lasting impact adult mentors have on children’s lives. We’ve
seen so many kids over the years in unfortunate situations rise to the challenge and
beat the odds after enrolling in Big Brothers Big Sisters. We’ve stressed the importance
of education to our kids and hope by doing this we will continue to see close to 100% of
high school seniors enrolled in BBBS graduate from High School.
We appreciate all the support we have received from our donors and the community
who continue to give despite tough economic times. We would not be where we are
today without the ongoing support of our donors, staff, and most importantly, our wonderful volunteers who give their time, love, friendship and support to our children. If you
are a current volunteer, you know how grateful we are for your time and dedication with
your “Little”. If you are a child served by the Agency, or a parent of a child served by
the Agency, you know about the effectiveness of the Agency’s programs.
If
you
have graciously donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters over the past year, your dollars are
being well-invested in the youth of Greater Birmingham. If you currently have ever
considered becoming a volunteer or donor, we encourage you to take the next step and
support Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2010.
As we look forward to a new year with new challenges and
successes, Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to thank Carey
Rome for serving as Board President in 2008 and 2009. On
behalf of the staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters,
Congratulations Carey on a job well done and thank you from
the bottom of our hearts!
All our Best,
Carey Rome

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Of Greater Birmingham
Programs Report 2009 in Review
2009 was another outstanding year for BBBS from
breaking match numbers and growth to new and exciting
match activities all made possible by the ongoing dedication and support of volunteers, staff, Young Advisory
Board, Board of Directors and community support. This
collaborative effort has enable BBBS to remain the leading youth mentoring agency in the Greater Birmingham
area. Throughout the obstacles and successes, the
BBBS team remained dedicated and committed not only
to the agency but the many children served in need of
the services and programs offered by Big Brothers Big
Sisters.
Program Growth in 2009
2009 was the second consecutive year the agency
served over 1,000 children in the Greater Birmingham area. The agency served a total of
1,088 children which represents a 5% growth
year to year. By the years’ end, there were 120
matches made in the Community based program. The number of children served by the
agency’s Core program grew from 406 to 454,
an 11.8% increase from 2008. As of December
31, 2009, the agency served 634 children in
their school based program. BBBS ended the
year with a total of 745 open matches, a 5%
increase from 2008. The agency’s closure rate remained
level from 2008 at 31.5% indicating the quality of their
matches and volunteer training has remained positive,
reliable and consistent. The agency entered four new
schools in which they can serve more children in need of
positive adult role models. The new schools entered in
2009 were Tarrant Middle School, Oneonta City School
(Blount County), Cleveland Elementary School (Blount
County) and Locust Fork Elementary School (Blount
County). Another significant accomplishment for the
agency a 15% growth in volunteer inquiries which continues to increase with more positive publicity, agency activities and events, board involvement and proven success of these mentoring relationships.
Growth, Development & Expansion
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham maintained its Satellite Office In Blount County, operated by
Jim Tuttle an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer. The Blount
County Satellite Office was very successful in making new
matches in three new Blount County Schools, maintaining
existing matches in their county as well as conducting
fundraising events to support the programs and services of
BBBS including a fashion show and yard sale.
The Agency maintained its monthly distribution of
Electronic newsletters to maintain open communication with current matches, parents, Executive
Board Members, community partners and other
related parties.
In 2009, Big Brothers Big Sisters revamped their
Young Advisory Board by recruiting ten new
members bringing their board’s total membership
to 15. They hosted monthly socials, supported
agency activities, and merged with the Bigs Advisory Council at the end of 2009 to make a strong
and effective group of young professionals to
support the organization’s mission and values. The Public
Relations and Marketing Department attended a record
breaking 25 recruitment and agency fairs throughout the
year, had 35 speaking engagements to spread awareness
about BBBS, participated in nearly 40 media interviews
and produced a video highlighting the power of the Big
Brothers Big Sisters program and the magic made when a
child is matched with a positive adult role model through
the BBBS Program.
The Development and Fundraising Department continued
using the EXCEED donor software system to keep better
records of the agency’s donors and corporate partners
throughout the fundraising year. They reached their fundraising goal of $893,080 by successfully executing fundraising events such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake, The Arby’s Charity
Tour, Night Run and Fun and the Night of Big Moments Reunion Event. The Development Department submit an outstanding 28 grant requests totaling $1.45 million and received 15 of 28 totaling $177,200. By the years’ end, they
cultivated more than 50 new donors supporting the programs and services provided by BBBS. Overall, the agency
became more productive and efficient by utilizing available
resources and taking advantage of new technologies.
2009 Match Activities
Big Brothers Big Sisters once again extended open
arms to the children and volunteers involved in their
programs by means of several fun match activities
throughout the year. The agency offered a Spring Picnic and Values Lessons in conjunction with the Arby’s
Charity Golf Tournament, their annual Easter
Egg Hunt with Samford University, a Back to
School Bash with games and school supplies
and hosted an Open House Holiday Party in
which children received books collected by
Barnes and Noble at the Summit. In addition
to these larger events, the agency hosted four
movie nights for matched and unmatched children and their Bigs, two overnight lock-ins,
Match Parties for their School Based Children,
an Ice Cream Party for Honor Roll Students,
provided a Basketball Clinic hosted by UAB
Athletics, offered Birmingham Baron’s Night to
matches and a Broadway Camp for kids during the
summer. The agency provided tickets to several
events, games and activities throughout the year including Auburn and Alabama athletic tickets, Alabama State Fair passes, Circus coupons, and Disney
on Ice tickets, to name a few.
The agency hosted it’s largest reunion event to
date in December reuniting former Bigs and
Littles on this Night of Big Moments. They recognized volunteers during National Mentoring
Month by delivering balloons and candy as a
token of their appreciation for their dedication
and commitment to BBBS, they honored little
brother Marquis H. for designing their annual
holiday card, held a successful Fashion Show
Fundraiser in Blount County, doubled their goal
for their Holiday Book Drive with Barnes and
Noble at the Summit and elected Bigs of the
Year; Big Brother Andrew Russell went on to
win State Big of the Year and Big Sister Natalie
Triola won WVTM NBC13’s Making a Difference Award.
