BIOGRAPHIES
Jim Sanborn
Jim Sanborn was a resident artist at Glen Echo Park from 1973
through 1981. He has gone on to receive numerous awards and
grants and to exhibit in major museums in the United States, Asia,
and Europe. His works are included in the collections of several
major museums, including locally at the National Museum of
American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
His public sculptures—including perhaps his most well-known
installation, Kryptos, at the CIA headquarters in McLean,
Virginia—can be found in Japan, Taiwan, and many locations in the
U.S. Mr. Sanborn’s other public artworks in the Washington, D.C.,
area include Antipodes at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden in Washington; Coastline at the NOAA Museum of the
Sea in Silver Spring, Maryland; Invisible Forces in Arlington,
Virginia; and Lingua at the Walter E. Washington Convention
Center in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Sanborn graduated from Randolph-Macon College with
a double major in art history and sociology and received his
master’s degree in sculpture from Pratt Institute. A sculptor
and photographer, much of his work reflects a confluence
of art and science, including installations such as Terrestrial
Physics (Museum of Contemporary Art Denver) and Critical
Assembly (Gwangju Biennale, South Korea), and his photography
series, such as The Radium Clock Series and The Topographic
Projections and Implied Geometries Series. Mr. Sanborn is
currently developing a new body of museum and gallery works
about the global trade in looted antiquities.
In a 2009 piece by The Washington Post’s art critic, Mr. Sanborn
was described as being “one of Washington’s most important
artists.” Mr. Sanborn’s sculpture, photographs, and drawings are
represented by Marsha Mateyka Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Alan Fern
Alan Fern is Director Emeritus of the National Portrait Gallery,
Smithsonian Institution. Under Fern’s leadership from 1982 to
2000, the gallery’s collection doubled to more than 18,000 works
and expanded its definition of portraiture to include photography
and caricatures. Previously, Dr. Fern had served for 21 years at
the Library of Congress. There he held several posts, including
Director for Special Collections of the Library and Chief of the
Prints and Photographs Division.
Dr. Fern has written and lectured extensively, especially in the
history of the graphic arts. He was among the organizers of the
Art Nouveau exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New
York and wrote a chapter for the exhibition catalog.
A native of Detroit, Dr. Fern holds a doctorate in the history of
art from the University of Chicago and was a Fulbright scholar at
the Courtauld Institute, University of London.
Valerie Ervin
Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin represents
District 5, which includes Kensington, Silver Spring, Takoma Park,
and Wheaton. Ervin is chairperson of the Council’s Education
Committee, which reviews more than half of Montgomery
County’s operating budget. Elected in 2006, Councilmember
Ervin is the first African American woman to serve on the
Council. She did not take a traditional path to public service. She
grew up in a military family and lived on several military bases
throughout the world, but eventually made Montgomery County
her home.
Prior to her service on the Council, she was the Dean of Students
at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Ervin holds a master’s degree in public administration from
the University of Baltimore. Councilmember Ervin is a strong
supporter of the arts and humanities in Montgomery County.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. is funded by an operating
grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating
a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive, and also by funding from the
Montgomery County government and the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery
County. In addition, individual, foundation, and corporate donors generously support
the Partnership. All programs are produced in cooperation with the
National Park Service and Montgomery County, Maryland.
About the Glen Echo Park Partnership
Established by Montgomery County and the National Park
Service in 2002, the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and
Culture’s mission is to present vibrant artistic, cultural, and
educational offerings at Glen Echo Park and promote the Park
as a unique destination for our region’s diverse population.
The Partnership nurtures a dynamic community of artists and
performers while preserving and managing historic facilities
within a National Park.
Glen Echo Park is home to a community of artists, dancers,
musicians, and performers who share their knowledge and
expertise with more than 450,000 people each year. Your
generous support of the Gala and the Partnership helps ensure
that the Park continues to thrive as one of the area’s finest
cultural resources.
