ATHOUGHTFORPURIM
The ultimate defeat of fear comes about through faith: faith in ourselves that we can solve our
problemsandfaithinGodthatGodhasgivenustheresourcesandthehopetosolvethoseproblems.
Faithisnotamagicaldevice,butratherasurescaleagainstwhichtomeasureourfears.Iffearsareto
be resolved, they must be seen in the perspective of a good God, a helpful society, and a friendly
universe.
WhentheFrenchtyrant,Napoleon,startedtomovehispowerfularmies,allofEuropewasinastateof
fearandtrembling.InSpain,anembattledarmyundertheDukeofWellingtonwastryingtoresisthis
advance.Oneday,ayounglieutenantcameintotheBritishgeneral’stentwithamapclutchedinhis
tremblinghandsandexclaimedinnearhysteria“look,General,theenemyisuponus!”“Youngman,“
thegeneralreplied,“getlargermaps,theenemywon’tseemsoclose.”
Ifwepossessthelargermapoffaith,thegreatarmyofthehumankind,calledfear,willnotappearso
close.Theworldhasexistedformillionsofyearsandwillcontinuetodoso.Peoplehavesolvedtheir
problemsandwillcontinuetodoso.
Decadesago,agreatAmericanpresidentsaid,“theonlythingwehavetofearisfearitself.”
Threecenturiesago,agreatNewEnglandgovernorsaid,“herewefearedafearwheretherewas
nofear”.
Over two millennia ago, a great Hebrew prophet said, “fear not, nor be anxious for I am with
you,forIamyourGod.”

thecapacitytoacceptortoleratedelay,trouble,orsuffering
withoutgettingangryorupset
Itcanbereallytough.Traffic,onholdwithComcast,inastorewhileaclerktalkstoafriendon
apersonalcall,listeningtosomeonereadthetextofslidesinapresentation,waitingforthe
callthatismoreimportanttoyouthantothepersoncallingyou,thedoctor’sofficewhenyou
wereontimebutthedoctorwasnot--thelistisalongoneofthoseitemsthatgetunderour
skin.
Please don’t jump ahead. I am not going to say we should just be passive and wait, that we
should just accept blindly that our turn will come sooner or later. Rather, I try to look at
patienceasanactivechoice,waitingtillthetimeisright.Ifinditusefultotrytoplacemyselfin
the shoes of the person who might be contributing to my buildup of frustration. Does the
salesgirlworktwojobstopayoffastudentloanforstudiesthatdidnotpayoffwithajobinher
field?Isthedoctorhandlinganemergency?
An extra few minutes waiting in line is not the end of the world. We can take the time to
actively think about the important people in our lives. We can focus on steady, controlled
breathingtolowerourbloodpressure.Wecansitinthewaitingroom,relaxourmuscles,and
takeamomentofmeditationwhilewaitingforthenursetocallourname.Wecantuneinthe
newsormusicwhileinthecar,andmoveforwardintheslowlaneinsteadofchanginglanes
backandforth.
Patience is a part of the process of action, of striking when the iron is hot. As a pilot, I had
manychancestopostponeaflightbecauseofweather--thedecisiontowaitwas
anactiveone,evenifitmeantsittingforhoursinanairportinMidland,Texas,withnothingbut
asodavendingmachineandaweathercomputerforcompany.
Inacaselikeaflightinasmallairplane,patienceisalifesaver.Inlessriskysituations,exercising
patiencecanhelpustofeelmoreincontrolofourownfate,i.e.,wearechoosingnottoletan
arbitrarywaitgetthebetterofus.
Ihavebecomesomewhataccustomedto“season”hereinSouthwestFlorida,andithasbeena
testofmycommitmenttothisperspectiveonthevalueofmytime.WhileItrulytrytopractice
what I espouse above, I readily admit that sometimes it is necessary to downshift and
acceleratesoasnottogetstuckatthatlonglightonEasyStreet.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing
of our beloved Temple Shalom member Harry Loeb.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his entire family.

HarryLoebwasapillaroftheSynagogue.He,andhisbelovedEmmy,werethereevery
singleFridayeveningforShabbatservices.Youalwaysgotabighellofrombothofthem–
alongwiththeirsmiles
Harry was so knowledgeable about Judaism. He had so many wonderful stories to tell.
ThroughtheyearsthatIknewhim,Iaskedhimseveralquestionsandifhedidnotknow
theansweratthattime,hefoundoutaboutitlateronandalwaysgotbacktome.
I loved sitting in back of both of them each week. I loved watching them interact
together–thelovetheysharedforeachother,forthecongregation,forthesynagogue
andfortheRabbi.
Their early lives had so much heartache and sadness in it – yet they both survived and
madeawonderful,lovinglifeforthemselvesandtheirfamily.
IknowinmyheartthatgoingtoFridayeveningserviceswillneverbequitethesamefor
me.Apieceismissing.IdonotknowifanyofyounoticedthispastFridayeveningthat
oneoftheShabbatcandlesblewout.Idonotthinkthatitwasafaultywick.Itwasthat
oneofourmembershadjustpassedawaythisweekandwasmissing.
Harry and Emmy – you are together again to share your love. We will all miss both of
you.Pleaserestinpeace.

InlovingmemoryofHarryandEmmyLoeb
HarryandEmmywillalwayshaveaspecialplaceinmyheart.WhenECandIfirstshowedupatTemple,
weweresomewhatbedraggledduetohavingbeenontheroadfromTexasforclosetofourdaysand
themovingtruckhadnotyetshownupwithourfurnitureandtherestofourgear.Theywelcomedus
warmly.BothofthemtookmeundertheirwingsandmademefeelpartoftheTemplefamilyfromday
one.Emmyhadmejointhechoir,whichwebothdearlyloved.Harrywasawealthofinformationand
support for me as a new board member. He had wonderful ideas and was able to provide lots of
suggestionstomakeTemplestronger.Hewasahugesupporttomeasanofficerandthenaspresident.
Iwasblessedtohaveaverylonglivelyvisitwithhimjustdaysbeforeheenteredthehospital.Atthat
time we talked about lots of things, but he did say it was time for someone else to carry on as Ritual
Chairman.HewasextremelypleasedthatIwouldappointDr.CatherineBukovitztotakethatposition.
ECwillmisshisspiritedpoliticalsparring!IwillmisshishumorandhisstrengthaswellasEmmy’sever
presentlove.TheworldandTempleShalomwasamuchbetterplacebecauseofEmmyandHarry.I
knowthatIwasamuchstrongerandhappierpersonbecauseofthem.

Our annual art auction was a wonderful success!! Despite the bad weather we had a good and lively
crowd!!TheartsoldwellandtheSilentAuctionwasaHUGEsuccess!!!
I want to thank Joyce Gelfand for again taking on the HUGE job of the silent auction and for Cindy
Melserforallherhardworkbothwithsponsorsandwiththesilentauction.Withoutthesetwoladies
wewouldnothavehadasuccessfulevent!ThankyoutoLaurieJoffewhoobtainedpre-auctionpublicity

I want to thank the workers of the evening: Odette Port, Ellen Plavner, Rise Wells, Michelle Berzak,
