Spring/Summer 2007
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Western New York
Issue 4
Your support lets Emily make a big splash
E
mily, a 12-year-old girl from Lockport, NY, has been diagnosed with Burkitt’s
Lymphoma, a type of cancer. Her favorite sport is swimming, but her local pool
recently closed. With the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® and the generosity
of R.B. Mac, Inc. and Colley’s Pools and Spas, Emily is now able to swim and
splash all she wants in her own pool in her backyard.
The grand opening of Emily’s pool was kicked off with a party where Mayor
Michael Tucker of Lockport proclaimed June 16 “Emily’s Day”!
We would like to thank Local Laborers 91 and Fox Fence, who generously
provided the labor to install fencing around the pool. The 24’ by 52” Mystique
above-ground pool will have Emily diving for her deepest dreams. And a huge
thank you goes out to Emily’s wish granters, Judi Tybor and Sheila Hoch, who
helped coordinate this wonderful wish!
In Emily’s spare time, she loves to play soccer, eat at Camaratta’s, and watch the
“Real World.” Her favorite color is blue and her favorite subject in school is math.
Please use the enclosed envelope to make a donation today so we can continue
to make children’s wishes come true.
Wish child Emily proudly displays her
“Emily’s Day” proclamation.
Chapter joins start of Destination Joy!
A
s part of the June 5 national launch of Destination JoySM
presented by LAY’S®, our chapter held an event at the Maid
of the Mist for wish families, volunteers and members of the
community. We read proclamations from communities in Western
New York and across the state proclaiming that June 5 was MakeA-Wish Day, then everyone boarded the boat for photos and a ride.
Destination JoySM is the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s campaign to inspire and
empower Americans to share their much-needed time, talents and resources to grant
the wishes of the 100,000 children who will be diagnosed with life-threatening
medical conditions over the next four years. This campaign focuses on the JOY that
is brought to a child before, during and after their wish.
To discover the
seven different ways to
participate in Destination
Joy, please visit www.
westny.wish.org.
With Niagara Falls as the
backdrop, supporters help
launch the Destination
Joy campaign to inspire
Americans to share with
Make-A-Wish.
Your support helped Quinton GO
fishing in the Florida Keys!
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions
to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Please share your talents
Every volunteer has unique talents,
interests, and community contacts that
can help us grant an exceptional wish.
Many times the wish granter is assigned
to a wish that offers him or her the
opportunity to contribute just the right
touch of magic. We have had a wish
granter with strong ties to the horse
community find herself paired to a horse
arena wish. Just recently a wish for an 18th
birthday party at the Connecticut Street
Armory was assigned to a wish granter
whose father works at the Armory.
But there are occasions when the
talent we are looking for is from a wish
granter not assigned to the particular wish
needing assistance. Just a few examples
of “wish networking” are Matt Terry
contributing his artistic talents, Margi
Newman generously boarding wish
family pets and Kelly Peterson acting as
the D.J. during wish events.
In order to increase our effectiveness,
it would be great if you would take the
time to let us know what your interests
and hobbies are so that we may call upon
you when we have the need. It is one
more way you will be helping us to share
the power of a wish®.

Thank you!

For The Stars creative black tie gala at the
Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. The support of

I wish to...HAVE an 18th Birthday Party!
argaret, who prefers to be called “Maggie,” is a 17-year-old girl from East
Aurora who has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma, a type of cancer.
Maggie’s wish was to HAVE a magical 18th
birthday party. With the help of the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, the Village of East Aurora’s Mayor
David J. DiPietro, Cielo’s Salon, Chef’s Restaurant,
Sweet Beginnings Bakery, Status Limo, Creative
Advertising, Dawn DeLarosa, D’Youville College,
Roycroft Inn, Clara Milas Bridal Shop, and the
Connecticut Street Armory, Maggie’s 18th birthday
will never be forgotten. Maggie was honored by the
mayor proclaiming it “Maggie’s Day,” and she had
star treatment throughout the day. Maggie got
dressed up, rode in a white limo and walked the
red carpet in the company of her friends and
family. It certainly was a night to remember.
In Maggie’s spare time, she enjoys
reading Nora Roberts and watching The
Daily Show. Her favorite color is blue
and she loves to cheer on the Buffalo
Sabres.
People like you understand the
power of a wish, and your generosity
enabled us to make Maggie’s birthday
bash a reality. Please donate today so
we can continue to bring strength, hope and joy to children’s lives.
Wishes: March 1— May 31, 2007
We are extremely proud of the wishes we have been able to
grant throughout our Western New York community during the
2007 fiscal year.  We will grant close to 130 wishes this year to
children with life-threatening medical conditions, which is just
over a five percent increase from the previous fiscal year. This
is due to the tremendous support of our donors and volunteers,
as well as the incredible dedication of our staff and board of
directors.
We are thrilled to be a part a newly launched national
marketing campaign entitled “Destination Joy.” For more details,
be sure to visit our local Web site at www.westny.wish.org and
find out how you can help share the power of a wish®.
In addition, I am pleased to announce that our local Western New York Chapter will
move into its new office headquarters this fall! This location will give us more visibility
within our community as well as better tools to make more wishes happen. Our new
facility is conveniently and centrally located at 3901 Genesee Street in Cheektowaga
(near Cayuga Road). You are encouraged and welcome to visit us anytime!
Remember – it’s not a last wish for a child. It is a wish that will bring HOPE for
a better future, a wish that will bring STRENGTH to get through difficult times, and a
wish that brings JOY to be experienced for a lifetime. Thank you for your support and
anticipated future support towards making new dreams come true for sick children.

Volunteer Spotlight
This issue of Once Upon a Wish honors ALL of our volunteers.
Our volunteers play a major role in our organization and without them our wishes
and events would not be as rewarding and successful as they are. It is our volunteers
that allow us to grant great wishes and make so many families so happy. Here are some
pictures of our volunteers in action!
