Dear Friends,
After receiving the devastating news of a life-threatening diagnosis, a child’s world is turned upside
down. Suddenly, carefree childhood days are overshadowed by exhaustive medical treatments, fear,
and often sadness.
Yet amidst these changes, another transformation occurs when a child is asked, “What do you wish
for?” Joy returns and anticipation, excitement, and hope for the future are ignited.
At Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta, we believe that every child should be free to dream. This is why for
18 years we have been granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
For a sick child, a wish provides hope, strength, and joy. When children think about their wish, they focus
on something positive and become hopeful. They plot and plan their escape, dreaming new scenarios
of how it will unfold. They are empowered to dream rather than feel like a victim of their illness.
In 2012, we proudly granted 29 wishes and completed 4 wish assists, enriching the lives of over 30
children and their families, allowing them to move beyond the pain and uncertainty of illness, and to
embrace the love, kindness and caring of the people who helped make their wishes come true.
In 2013, we will continue to create powerful, life-affirming experiences for eligible children, with the
goal of granting 40 wishes. To make this happen, we will work together with medical professionals,
families and volunteers to increase awareness of our magical mission. We will also continue to work
with our donors and volunteers to enrich our fundraising efforts.
On behalf of our wish children and their families, thank you for helping to share the power of a wish®.
Sincerely,
Kim Anthony, CFRE
Chief Executive Officer

Our History
I wish to go... to
Walt Disney World®
Aisley, 3
Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta began
in 1995 and since that time has granted
over 325 wishes to deserving children
and over 40 wish assists from around the
world.
We cover all costs of a wish, including
flights, hotels and transportation.
The average cost of a wish is $10,000.
To support our mission and to achieve
our wish granting goals, we rely on the
support of volunteers and the generosity
of donors. We endeavor to engage
stakeholders and increase community
awareness of Make-A-Wish® with
fundraising initiatives and events that
promote community involvement.
We are grateful for the generosity of
individuals and corporations in Southern
Alberta who assist us with the financial
and in-kind support that we need to be
able to carry out our mission.

“We had the most amazing trip. From the
moment we arrived at the airport to the
moment we collapsed into our own beds, in
our own home, we were treated like royalty
and made to feel like we were the most
important people in the world.
Aisley had a special meet and greet with
Barney. They danced and hugged and
danced some more. We had tears in our
eyes. Barney was the only thing that made
Aisley feel better when she was really sick.”
“
Thank you for making
Aisley’s wish come true. You
showed us how amazing the
world is and thank you just
doesn’t seem like enough.

Our Mission
To grant the wishes of children
with life-threatening medical
conditions to enrich the human
experience with hope, strength,
and joy.
Our Vision
To grow wish-granting so every
eligible child has the opportunity
to have their wish fulfilled.
My name is Holly, and a year ago, I was
diagnosed with Wegener's Granulomatosis.
My wish was to go on a Hawaiian Cruise,
and it was the best week ever!
I just wanted to say thank you so much to
the Make-A-Wish® Foundation, Carolyn,
The Maids of Athena, and everyone else
involved in making my wish come true!
It was definitely the light at the end of the
tunnel for my family and I.
“
As wish referrals continue to
come in at an unprecedented
rate, more children than ever
need to experience the power
of a wish.

Oliver is 4 years old and has Hollow Visceral
Myopathy, also known as Chronic Intestinal
Pseudo-obstruction, which is a digestive
disorder where the intestines are unable to
contract normally.
On April 14, 2012, Oliver, along with his family,
departed on a trip to Walt Disney World®.
During their visit to Florida, they stayed at the
wonderful not-for-profit resort called, Give
Kids The World.
While on his wish Oliver could forget about
his illness and be a kid again. When Oliver
is at home he loves to play with his Buzz
Lightyear toys, and to dress up like a Pirate.

Fundraising
Programs
Kids for Wish Kids®
Kids For Wish Kids® is a popular Make-A-Wish® program for kids because it is managed by kids.
Kids are responsible for coming up with fundraising ideas, and carrying them out to raise money for the
wish children. Teachers and parents often serve as advisors, but ownership of the group belongs solely
to the kids involved.
We thank all the children who were involved in this program in 2012.
Weddings for Wishes
Weddings for Wishes is a great way to celebrate a special day and to give back to children who need
it the most.
There are a variety of ways to raise money for Make-A-Wish® at weddings but one that is popular is for
the bride and groom to make a donation in place of giving their guests party favours.
