All Aboard The Arc
On September 6, 2012, when the statewide primary election took place, very
few people showed up at the polls. The greatest concern when people don’t go
is that our voices, our needs, our programs, our extended services, our overall
care is potentially jeopardized. We’ll tell you why. No one else will ever care
as much about the services you and your family members deserve than you do.
By registering to vote, showing up to the polls and making our own choices on
who we want to represent ourselves, we make a bold statement to those in
office... which is to not forget about us, those we love, and the agencies which
serve us.
The Center would like to thank the efforts of Nancy Moore and The Caring Force
for organizing an opportunity for our program members and staff members to
become registered voters on September 25-27, 2012. Many had questions like
“What happens if I have a guardian?” Even if someone has a guardian, they
still have the right to vote! We now have 28 additional new registered voters
ready to stand up and make a choice. Will you be next?
If you are 18 years or older visit your Town Hall or local Registry of Motor Vehicles, or if you are computer savvy- check out http://www.registertovote.org/
and become a registered voter. Are you a Connecticut resident? No worries.
That state votes too. Check out the following link for Connecticut registration

Sandwich & Social
Once a month the Center hosts a lunch networking event that invites local
businesses and individuals to learn the history of the Center and tour the
many small businesses and programs created by the Center. We have found
our guests to be amazed, not only at the creativity and diversity shown in
the development of our businesses, but also for the professional and efficient
management of multitasking the logistics of many operations. Our “controlled
chaos” is proof of the capabilities of the Center’s businesses by staying on task
and fulfilling the requirements of our partnerships. It takes clear communication and a “we are all in this together” attitude to allow for smooth transitions
between jobs, while multiple companies share valuable work space.
If you or your place of business is interested in attending a future “Sandwich and Social” please contact Jennifer Valois Grammatic at (508) 764-4085 ext 656 or e-mail
[email protected]. Our next “Sandwich and Social” will be held on
November 13, 2012, at 100 Foster Street, Southbridge, MA, from 12 - 1:30 p.m.
Building Bridges & Rainbow GroupSelf Advocacy by Steve Etzweiler
September 4th was the fall kick off for Building Bridges: a self-advocacy program that meets at the Center of
Hope Day Hab program located at 1 North Street, Southbridge, MA from 4 - 6 p.m. typically on the first Tuesday
of the month. The first meeting consisted of 20 individuals sharing fundraiser ideas in order to raise money for
several deserving causes in need. During the October gathering, voting will commence for which fundraisers and
causes they would like to focus on. Discussions on how to advocate for more funding for programs, how to speak
with legislators, and how to respectfully stand up for human rights took place. Building Bridges members also
decided to expand by offering an additional group.
The newest addition to self advocacy is called the Rainbow Group, which is for individuals who are gay, bi,
lesbian, questioning or transgendered, along with their friends and supporters. This group will meet the third
Tuesday of every month from 4 - 6 p.m., also at the Center of Hope Day Hab Program. People are empowered
to make decisions for themselves, and if they need help, the group discusses it. If you would like to join others
in learning how to stand up for yourself and the things you believe in, contact Steve Etzweiler at setzweiler@
thecenterofhope.org or call 508-764-4085 and come join Building Bridges on November 6th, and Rainbow Group
on November 20th.*

Worcester Business Journal40 Under Forty Award Winner
by Cindy Howard
The Worcester Business Journal’s 40 under Forty awards presentations
and ceremonies are an annual celebration of young professionals in
the Central Massachusetts business world. Each year the Worcester
Business Journal accepts nominations for potential award winners. A
panel of judges then decide which individuals stand out among the
crowd because of their commitment to giving back to the community,
and their passion for success in their line of work. This year, among
the many honorees, is our very own Center of Hope Foundation
employee, Jennifer Grammatic - Marketing Representative.
Jennifer came to the Center just over a year ago after many years
picture: Center of Hope Foundation’s Cindy Howard, Jennifer
in retail sales and a love for design. After learning the variety of
Rachel Reyes, and Jim Howard after Jennifer’s
skills and many recommendations that followed Jennifer, the Center Grammatic,
acceptance of 40 Under Forty award at Mechanics Hall,
welcomed her into the role of marketing the many small businesses Worcester on Sept. 19, 2012.
originated by the Center in the local business community. Her involvement expands further by representing the
Center as a whole while networking, advocating, volunteering, and fundraising. Her excellent graphic design skills
can be seen through the updating of the many brochures and marketing pamphlets printed on the Center’s behalf.
Jennifer says “The Center has opened my eyes to a world of opportunities. Everyday I grow as an individual
because I have been blessed to find a place where so many people focus on encouraging the success of others.
I love having the chance to tell others about the amazing things that transpire at the Center and the incredible
work of our self-advocates and staff in regard to achieving their goals.”
Please join me in congratulating Jennifer for her own success in being recognized as a 2012 40 Under Forty Award Winner.

6th Annual Golf Tournament ReCap
by Marie Barse
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Center of Hope Foundation
supporters, especially our golfers that participated in our 6th Annual Golf Tournament. Thank you! The day started out with thunder and lightning storms, but
by the time the shot-gun start happened, the sun was shining and it turned into
a gorgeous day. We had 72 golfers and for some of them, it was their first time
joining our tourney.
This year, we obtained new sponsorships with Karl Storz Endoskope from Charlton
being our Tournament Sponsor. Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were Incom
Co, Henke Sass Wolf of America, and G Seven Catering Co. One of our staff
(Melissa Palmer) won the Longest Drive for Women. CONGRATS..Melissa.
We had a great time and raised $12,058.52 for our Sports & Recreation and Holiday Giving Programs. My favorite
part of the day was when our program member’s faces lit up as they eagerly waited at the Club House for an individual 1:1 ride around the golf course with one of the Heritage Country Club Rangers. I thought that was priceless.
My second favorite was when one of our golfers invited and offered his club to one of our program members
to hit the golf ball into the hole. WOW…the smile on this face was a story to tell. Overall it turned out to be a
beautiful day. Thank you to all staff, program members, and volunteers that contributed to this event. It was
definitely a day to remember.
The Center of Hope is participating in the Special Olympics 2012
Trick or Trot because we believe in the highly effective programs
run by Special Olympics Massachusetts and want to do something
to help. The Trick or Trot is a Halloween themed 5k run and 1 mile
walk and it's a great way to kick off Halloween!
2012
Trick or Trot
5k run
1 mile walk
The Center has set a goal to raise money for the athletes of
Special Olympics Massachusetts in our geographical area. Special
Olympics athletes are never charged to participate in any of the
28 different sports offered, so we are raising critical dollars to
fund the year-round sports training and athletic competitions for
athletes in Massachusetts with intellectual disabilities.
You can help the Center reach this goal by making a donation
online. Click on the link below and you will be taken to our team
page where you can make a secure online credit card donation.
Thank you so much for your support! Together we can improve the lives of some very
courageous and dedicated athletes in Massachusetts with intellectual disabilities and
other closely related developmental disabilities. Your donation will help to provide them with programs and
services that will bring happiness and pride in all that they do.

Scarecrows for Solutions
Make a scarecrow, make a difference. For the past four Sundays the Bemis Farms
Nursery in Spencer, MA held a family event supporting local non-profits and charities.
Individuals and families could stuff a life-sized scarecrow with hay, accessorize with
scarves, hats and other cool decorations, and leave the mess behind. The cost of materials was taken care of by Bemis Farms Nursery and the $15 fee was given directly
to the charity of the individual’s choice.
The Center of Hope has decided to use the donations generated in our name to fund
our starving food pantry, which has been a vital source of relief for the 600 families
we serve, and those in our local community. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to
rely on big store operations solely for our donations since the need is far too great.
Scarecrows were designed to protect the farmers crops to ensure a bountiful season.
Thank you to Bemis Farms for providing a fun Fall activity for all to participate.

What’s New in Their Shoes?
End of Season Picnic at Charlton Woods
What an incredible day of fun filled events from lazy fishing to cruising
kayaks, splashing pool side, and kicking up the dust, dancing with our favorite tunes. All of the Day
Habilitation Programs, Vocational and Administration Departments gathered at Charlton Woods in
Charlton, MA on September 7, 2012. Amanda Cournoyer’s favorite quote from the picnic was from
a new program member in Day Hab, Gage, who said with all of his heart, “That was a great picnic!”
Thank you to all who could participate and make the day such a positive moment in everyone’s lives.
iPads, iPads, We All Want iPads!
This is by far the hottest item up for topic, and instead of hearing “Ice cream, Ice cream, we all
scream for Ice cream”, you will hear this new chant coming from all of our day habilitation programs. Apple iPads
are not just for facebook and solitaire. These lightweight, easy to handle pieces of technology have simplified navigational tools which allows our program members to operate the learning applications more effectively. For every
iPad acquired, the overall cost of programmatic materials for learning will be less because many of the applications designed for the iPad are free to download or cost very little in comparison to current curriculum materials.
This allows each program to customize and update new applications for interactive programs on a regular basis,
opening up a wide variety of learning capabilities for our program members. With interactive programs designed
to enhance the hands-on skills training, development for better communication, expressiveness of emotions, and
memory building, these iPads will offer a modern approach to learning. Since we have received the good news,
our very own Ben Doyen has been working tirelessly by adapting numerous applications for the iPad to fit our curriculum needs. This means, in the near future we will be able to offer new, interactive lessons and activities for the
population we serve. Read below to see how each program found ways to make this chant a reality.
Center of Hope Day Hab
In late August, the Center of Hope Day Hab was the first day hab to start the craze by holding Summer Fest 2012.
It was a tie-dye themed fundraiser to aid our program with innovative teaching tools. Thankfully, a lot of us
here at CoHF know how to enjoy a good ice cream sundae! Our staff and program members also made and sold
tie-dyed socks, bandanas and canvas bags, along with art work, beaded jewelry and baked goods, which included tie-dyed cupcakes! One of the biggest efforts put forth were the raffle baskets donated by our staff. There
were gourmet cupcakes, a really cool looking “back to school supplies tower” wrapped together to look like a
cake, and a fabulous grilling basket to name
just a few out of the dozen to choose from.
With the help of our amazing administrative
staff, program members from all Day Habs &
staff from all over the agency
who were able to attend,
allowed our program to raise
$1,050! With the money
raised, COHDH will purchase
three iPads.

Quinebaug River Day Hab
Next was Quinebaug River Day Hab taking advantage of a beautiful sunny day on September 14, 2012. Between
Michelle Chapdelaine and Carrie Kuszpa their grill was turning up the heat! The traditional cook-out fare was
available to all who attended for only $5.00. McDonalds can’t even beat that price for everything we got! With
great tunes and plenty of dance partners no one needed to count calories on this day. So much fun was enjoyed
by all and Quinebaug River raised $626.00! Great job Quinebaug River Day Hab!
West Street Day Hab
Monkey see, Monkey do. Why not, with all of the great successes we have all been hearing about? West Street
Day Hab rolled up their own sleeves and set fire to the grill with their own cook-out on September 26, 2012.
With all of this delicious, affordable food who needs to go out to lunch? Unless, that is, to help out West Street
by taking some food off their hands and replacing them with iPads! To add to the excitement of the day, Mary
Lou, a volunteer at West Street donated TWO PATRIOT TICKETS for the November 18, 2012 Patriots and Colts
game. Everyone will have until October 16, 2012 to purchase raffle tickets and Mary Lou will pick the winning
ticket. Who will it be, waving to everyone from the 50 yard line, section 109, seats 3 and 4? (ooh, pick me, pick
me!) These tickets’ face value are $185.00 each! West Street is practically giving them away with $5 FOR AN
ARM’S LENGTH , $10 FOR A LEG’S WORTH, AND $20 FOR HEAD TO TOE. So far, the cook out raised $833.00 plus
$165.00 raised selling soda at our company’s picnic, for a grand total of $998.00! Whoo hoo! Goooooo..... West
Street Day Hab!
Vocational Department - Employment Supports
Everyday the Vocational Department participates by volunteering
in the community. On September 26, 2012 many of our members
participated in The United Way Day of Caring. Through the years
the Center of Hope has been able to benefit from
other volunteers sweat and hard work and it is nice
to be able to give back. One of the locations was
You Inc in Southbridge, MA. Everyone got down
and dirty with weeding and removing debris, along
with mulching the flower beds.
If your place of business is in need of volunteers please contact Jennifer Williams at 508-764-4085
or e-mail [email protected].
United Way Day of Caring Helps CoHF
As briefly discussed in the above section of the Vocational Department’s overview, on September 26,
2012 many of our local community businesses also took part in the United Way Day of Caring by
helping out at the West Street Day Hab cook out and also at 30 Benefit Street, which is our newest addition to the Center’s housing availability. The Center was able to buy and renovate
two apartments in the 30 Benefit Street building. Cleaning and the preparing of these
apartments by the volunteers helped speed along the process for our participants
moving in. These apartments are now occupied by individuals who are receiving
supports that enable them to live independently.

Special “O” Fall Games 2012
by Rachel Reyes
Fall is in the air and that means it’s time for fall sports. Once again this year, the Center’s Special Olympics
Program is offering athletes a variety of sporting activities. We have three Flag Football Teams that will be
competing on October 27th (hopefully at Gillette Stadium). This fall we also have a huge Cheerleading Team. Our
cheerleading program has expanded and we have a Cheer Performance Team. This team was invited to cheer at
the Big E on September 30th and will also be performing at various events such as All Aboard the Arc.
Once again, the Center of Hope has expanded its Special Olympics
Program. This year, at the request of Matt Lasorsa, an all-around
Special Olympian, Soccer was added as a Unified Sport. We were
thrilled to be able to add two Soccer Teams that will be competing
on November 4th.
Upcoming Sports: Unified Basketball begins on December 1,
2012. To register for unified basketball, please contact Martin
Dawson at the Center. Registration will begin in November 2012.

Expanding Family Supports Services
by Rachel Reyes
After the devastating Family Supports budget cuts four years ago, many individuals lost their respite and social
recreational support services, especially the children and youth served by DDS. Over the past several years,
individuals, their families and provider agencies have worked tirelessly to advocate for increased family support
services, which for many makes the difference between a person with special needs needing residential placement or being able to be supported in their family home. In an effort to determine where the real need for family
supports were and get that information to our legislators, family forums were held across the state. Families
were able to voice what their needs were. Many families indicated that they were seeking additional social recreational opportunities for their youth and adults with disabilities. Recently DDS announced that family supports
agencies would receive additional dollars for targeted services. In the case of the Center of Hope Foundation, we
are able to add additional social recreational activities for youth. We are pleased to announce several upcoming
social recreational activities for youth under the age of 22, and encourage families to check our website, www.
thecenterofhope.org for upcoming events for youth and expanded social recreational activities for all individuals
with special needs in our area.
