All Aboard The Arc
At this time of year, we tend to reflect on all that we have accomplished. Each
and every one of us has grown and learned from our journey in 2012, giving us
more strength to prepare us for the upcoming challenges in 2013. The Center
wishes everyone a wonderful and prosperous year to come.
Sandwich & Social
On December 11, 2012 the Center held another Sandwich and Social event,
which invites people from the community and the business world to learn about
the impressive history of the Center of Hope and how we have grown to provide resources and services to over 600 families. To think, this all started from
one woman who saw a need, and had the strength and passion to establish the
building blocks of what we know the Center to be now.
While many local individuals may think they understand what may go on at the
Center, we find more often than not that they leave our tour impressed, and
educated in the possibilities, and the capabilities our participants accomplish
with the support which the Center provides. We are also still amazed that The
Arc, being the largest Non-Profit National Organization who supports individuals with disabilities, even after 56 years, is still not well known. Many individuals do not know who we are, who we support, what we strive for, and how far
we have come. This is why these gatherings, networking, and the many other
forms of advocacy in favor of individuals with disabilities cannot become weary,
and must continue on strong.

Duals Family Forum
Confused about the Dual Eligible Demonstration?* Do you or your loved one receive Medicare AND Medicaid
benefits? If so, you should know all about the changes coming up in a few months.
You are invited to join the following family forum co-hosted by The Arc of Massachusetts, and the Center of Hope
Foundation on January 17, 2013 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Pizza and drinks will be offered during the forum. Please

*This demonstration by the Commonwealth affects adults age 21 - 64 years who are eligible for both Medicare
and Medicaid. Instead of the current system, Integrated Care Organizations will be responsible for providing
health care and LTSS services for its dual eligible members.
35th Annual Legislative Reception
SAVE THE DATE! The Arc of Massachusetts and Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council is sponsoring
the 35th Annual Legislative Reception on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Center
will be visiting The State House - Great Hall, in Boston to listen to the upcoming 2013 legislative issues, as well
as, meet with our legislators to discuss the issues which directly affect our community. If you are interested in

ADDP Legislative Luncheon
On January 22, 2013, the Center will be attending the ADDP Legislative Luncheon honoring Represenative Brian
Dempsey and Senator Katherine Clark, for their distinguished service as ADDP’s 2013 Legislators of the Year.
As a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Rep. Brian Dempsey serves as the Chairperson of
the Ways and Means Committee. Dempsey has been a leader, in partnership with the House Speaker, and his
counterparts in the Senate, in protecting the interests of people with developmental disabilities, particularly
through the darkest days of the Great Recession.
Dempsey is credited by ADDP for his efforts in protecting and restoring DDS Family Support Programs, which
restored in home supports to over 5000 families previously scheduled to lose critical in home supports. He has
also been a leader in supporting the strengthening of community supports and reducing state dependence upon
institutional settings. Through his efforts, more people are living and thriving in their home communities.
Senator Katherine Clark has been selected as ADDP’s 2013 Senator of the Year in recognition of her consistent
support for community supports and services enabling people with disabilities to live in their home communities.
Senator Clark has been instrumental in helping strengthen the joint Department of Education and Department of
Developmental Services (DESE-DDS) program that enables students with disabilities to remain in their home communities and live with their families. She has also been a strong supporter in ensuring sufficient transportation
funding to ensure that people with disabilities are able to participate in day and employment activities, as well
as be able to visit their doctors and families when they wish to do so. Through her efforts, many families have
remained together and cohesive despite difficult challenges.
Building Bridges & Rainbow GroupSelf Advocacy
Building Bridges is a self-advocacy program that meets at the Center of Hope Day Hab program located at 1
North Street, Southbridge, MA from 4 - 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. In December, the group discussed how the governor approved the release of salary reserve money for Direct Care Staff. The group expressed hope for the money to be released before the holiday. As a whole the group decided to send the Governor a
letter of thanks, and a reminder that his continued support of Mass Health was very important to all of the selfadvocates. Everyone signed the letter and agreed to send their pictures along with the thank you letter. We love
iphone pictures! Because of the New Year Holiday, this group will not meet in January but will on February 5th.
The newest addition to self advocacy is called the Rainbow Group, which is for individuals who are gay, bi,
lesbian, questioning or trans-gendered, along with their friends and supporters. This group will meet the third
Tuesday of every month from 4 - 6 p.m., also at the Center of Hope Day Hab Program. The next meeting will be
on January 15th.* People are empowered to make decisions for themselves, and if they need help, the group
discusses it. If you would like to join others in learning how to stand up for yourself and the things you believe in,

Charity Auction
On November 16, 2012, the “Hollywood Red Carpet” was brought to the Publick House Historic Inn in Sturbridge,
MA for the Center’s Talents and Treasures Charity Auction. Our guests were certainly “rubbing elbows” with the
who’s who as our guest list kept soaring higher and higher! A grateful thank you to the staff of the Publick House
for finding a way to make the proper accommodations. A tip of the hat goes out to Dave “Peterman” Peterson
from Smith & Jones Idea Agency, who did an incredible job interviewing our guests and Event Sponsors. The
paparazzi had nothing on Les Gardner’s Photography, who generously volunteered his time and talents by photographing this wonderful event. Check out the pictures on http://www.eventproofs.com/ . Type in Talents and
Treasures, Password: Auction. Who knew that the violin could be played so eloquently behind one’s head when
the Worcester Sharks “Finz” challenged Hunter Foote, our event musician, to step up his game? Bravo Hunter!
Jared Vigneault and Jennifer Grammatic from Poise, Style and Motion Ballroom Studio, turned up the heat for
our guests on this chilly night with four dance presentations. And… Bob Fowler and Michael Fors from Pioneer
Auction Company didn’t miss a beat as many battled it out to win the coveted prize. So if you happened to miss
this event this year… DON’T WORRY! It is sure to be back.
The Talents and Treasures Charity Auction raises funds for the Holiday Giving Tree Program, which provides gifts
to families with children who have a disability and are affiliated with the Center of Hope Foundation. This year
we raised about $18,000! Thank you to all of our volunteers and sponsors for being a star in these families eyes
during this holiday season.

Holiday Giving Tree Program
On behalf of the Center of Hope Foundation’s Holiday Giving Tree Program,
CoHF provided some assistance to families in distress with holiday gifts and
other special supports to families of persons with medical, physical and/or
cognitive limitations. Those eligible for this program are program members
receiving services through any of the Center of Hope’s programs and people
that are referred by a Center of Hope employee. Thank you to all who helped
with donations and preparations.
Gobble, Gobble Road Race Recap
On Sunday morning, November 18, 2012, parking was scarce along North Street and it’s neighboring roads,
though that was OK, because the weather was a runner’s dream. The little jaunt over to the Center’s COH Day
Hab for the Gobble, Gobble, Road Race registration was a nice warm up for the legs. This year, 170 5k and 10k
runners and 30 one mile Fun Run participants laced up their sneaks, did a few stretches, and took on the slow
growing, never ending, up hill grade of the good ol’ neighborhoods of Southbridge, MA. At every turn you found
big smiling faces and heard ”whoo hoo’s” and “You’ve got this” encouragement from the volunteers.
So when the sea of blue shirts, compliments of our Sponsors, Angel Guard Products Inc., Quinebaug Masonic
Lodge, Metal Craft Machine, Rawson Material, Southbridge Tire Co, Inc., and Performance Graphics, took off at
the ready, set, go…. who thought they would see the first finisher come down the last stretch so soon? 5k, 1st
place finisher Hans Riemer from Groton, MA did finishing in 19:34. That is a 6:19 minute per mile! And the 5k
top female runner Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, MA was hot on his heels finishing in 20:26, which is a 6:35 minute per mile pace!
When the volunteers waved this way for 5k, and that way (away from town) for the 10k, 1st place finisher Scott
Deslongchamps of Putnam, CT took that challenge in stride and finished in 36:53, a 5:57 minute per mile. That
was also true for the top female finisher, Cindy Ouillette of Moosup, CT, who finished in 41:56, which is a 6:45
minute per mile pace. Did anyone realize that this was 6.4 miles of running? I can’t seem to go from my desk to
my car across the street in under 6 minutes!
Goody bags, Books and Beans hot coffee and hot chocolate left in everyone’s hands and filled their bellies before
and after the race. Medals were given to the top three places for each division. But most importantly, everyone
enjoyed a wonderful day, being active and bringing awareness and support to the Center of Hope recreational
programs by raising more than $3,000! Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and sponsored the
Gobble, Gobble Road Race, and don’t forget to invite more of your friends for next year!

What’s New in Their Shoes?
Program Christmas Party
Deck the halls and all be merry! Thanks to Judy Ferguson from Village Photo and Portrait Studio, the Center of Hope program members got dressed to the “nines” for their
annual semi-formal holiday portraits at the 2012 Christmas Party, located at the Old Southbridge
High School. On December 14th, Santa came early and said “Forget the milk and cookies, I’m saving room for Annie’s Country Kitchen’s annual feast.” Thanks to Annie’s Country Kitchen, everyone
enjoyed a home cooked style meal, received CoHF T-Shirts silk screened by the Center’s small business called All Manner of Banners, All Kinds of Signs, and had a jingle bell of a time with friends.
Precision Testing Labs Pizza Party
On December 18, 2012, Precision Testing sponsored a pizza party for all of our Day Habs and staff
to enjoy. It was held at the Center and the Shepard Hill High School Choir came to sing holiday songs. After, the
Day Habs created personal thank you cards to send and hand deliver to Precision Testing Labs thanking them for
such a delicious party.
Hip Hop Dance Class
We are not “do-si-do-ing” around the room, or breaking out the electric slide in these classes...that’s for sure.
Joelle Reyes (a Debbie Sichol’s Dance Center Dancer for 16 years) is keeping this hip hop class fresh and current
with some fantastic moves. Come check it out! The hip hop class will be from 4 - 5 p.m., at the Center of Hope
Day Hab. every Monday night. These classes are open to anyone (youth and adults) and it is free to all who
want to attend! Center of Hope Program Members may stay after their program until class time if they wish.
Limited transportation home is available, if needed. Please contact Ryan Thompson at 508-764-4085 to register
for classes. Drop ins are welcome.
Friday Night Dances at CoHDH
Bring your Monday night moves to Friday! Show us what you have learned at the Hip Hop Class at the Dinner
Dance on January 11, 2013, February 8, 2013, and March 29, 2013 from 6 - 9 p.m. The entrance fee for the dance
only is $3.00 and the cost for dinner and dance is $7.00. Call for pre registration at 508-764-4085 with Pauline.
Presidents Day
The Center programs will be closed to observe the Holiday on February 18, 2013.
Snow Ball Dance
The Snow Ball Dance is another wonderful opportunity for our program members to feel like Kings
& Queens at the CoHF annual Snow Ball Dance held at La Salle Hall, in Southbridge, MA. This year
the ball will be held on February 24, 2013 and will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. Dinner will be provided by Annie’s Country Kitchen and photos will be taken by Village Photo and Portrait Studio.
Pictures will be taken between 3 - 5 p.m. and all order forms must be filled out prior to
taking your picture. Exact payment is necessary since change will not be available.
Photos will be ready for pick-up at CoHF or mailed by Thursday, March 7, 2013. If
you are interested in purchasing tickets, which are $15.00, and photo packages

Job Club
Job club is for individuals who work at a Center based work site or a community based work site and is looking
for opportunities to have a social environment after work hours. Job club gathers on the third Monday of every
month during September - June from 4 - 6 p.m. Each attended meeting cost $5.00 and covers the cost of the
food provided. Planning throughout the year consists of game nights, movie nights, and a big outing at the end
of the year. This year there will be planning and organizing of a fundraiser to offset the cost of the final outing

Center of Hope Day Hab
During the month of December 2012, the CoH Day Hab was painting the town as they attended many community
activities. On the 3rd, everyone’s sweet tooth was put to the test when they had their own “Willy Wonka” experience right here in Shrewsbury, while touring the famous Hebert Candy Mansion. And what a treat it was to
attend the Mechanics Hall in Worcester, on the 5th and 12th, during their “Brown Bag Lunch” program featuring
USAF Band of Liberty and The Makanda Project. (www.bandofliberty.af.mil and www.mkmjazz.com) Brown Bag
Concerts are produced by Mechanics Hall and WICN Public Radio and are broadcasted on 90.5 fm. The varieties of musicians are endless. From cabaret to classic Jazz, stylish vocalists, and creative quartets, these special
day trips are truly music to our ears. On the 17th, creativity was also on the check list of things to do with a trip
to Bemis Farm to design holiday center pieces, along with finding time on the 7th and the 28th for more arts &
crafts during our program hours. The holiday also brought Shepard Hill High School’s chorus to the CoHDH for
a festive performance of song on the 18th, as well as, attendance on the 21st at West Street for a performance
from the Quinebaug Valley Singers. To read more about this, see West Street update.
In January, there will be many shopping opportunities in the community, along with yummy lunch
time eateries.
Quinebaug River Day Hab
In the month of January, Quinebaug River Day Hab will take weekly, free trips to the Jacob Edwards
Library, located in Southbridge. During this time, visitors can see a beautiful display of the Central
Mass artist, Cara Fleming’s flamework glass. With a variety of moretti and silver glass, Cara creates
lamp work beads, marbles, discs, and other glass pieces to be worn, enjoyed and shared. Movie
mania also takes place on every Friday. Start making a wish list of movies to see and share your
ideas with your program managers.
West Street Day Hab
Our very own Judy Dyson, a Direct Care Provider for West Street Day Hab and van monitor, moonlights as one of fifty Quinebaug Valley Singers. Throughout the years, Quinebaug Valley Singers
have provided free performances for our programs during the holiday season to enjoy. Seventeen
of the singers joined our folks on December 21st to carol many traditional holiday tunes
a cappella style, which was enthusiastically conducted by our self appointed volunteer
William “Mac” Blauvelt. The Quinebaug Valley Singers are an open group and welcomes anyone who likes to sing to join. They rehearse every Monday night during the
months of September – December, and February – June. It is $40.00 to join. If anyone

Southbridge Day Hab
This time of year, many of the Day Habs join together to enjoy the variety of activities offered to our programs
members. Southbridge Day Hab also participated in the“Brown Bag Lunch” performances at Mechanics Hall with
CoHDH on December 5th, and 12th. Also, Santa couldn’t resist coming by to sing a tune or two during karaoke
time at the Holiday party, which gave a moment for a few to sneak a peak into Santa’s gift bag. Presents were
given out to all. New Years Eve also rang in with cheer early on December 28, 2012.
Opportunities for community trips will include the Jacob Edwards Library on Mondays, bowling on Thursdays, and
CineMagic Movie trips on Fridays and many Arts & Craft options at the Day Hab.
Vocational Department - Employment Supports
Our newest “on call” location for our Vocational Department is working at Casella Waste Management helping
with over flow trash removal. Also, we are looking forward to adding 2 new volunteer locations to the list this
winter. The West Boylston Public Library in late January, and in late February we may be volunteering at the
American Optical Museum, which will be located at the Crane Street loft space. If you know of a business who is
looking for qualified, screened, entry level positions, please feel free to forward this information to Jennifer Williams and Ken Lahue in the Vocational Department of CoHF at 508-764-4085.

Family Supports Recreational Trips-Winter 2013

Movies & Lunch at Blackstone Valley Shops
On Saturday, January 5, 2013, join everyone on a trip to the movies and lunch. Transportation will leave at 9
a.m. and will arrive back by 4 p.m. The cost is $25.00 and includes the ticket to the movie and lunch. Movie
selections will be chosen on the day prior.

DDS MEET and GREET at CoHDH
On Monday January 28, 2013, family and friends have an opportunity to meet Dan Lunden - Central West
Regional Director, Sally Mueller - Area Director, Lynda Moore - Asst. Area Director, during the hours of 6:30 - 8:30
p.m. located in the CoHDH on 1 North Street, Southbridge, in collaboration with our Support
Center. Child and adult care will be provided.
The DDS Mission is dedicated to creating, in partnership with others, innovative and
genuine opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to participate fully
and meaningfully in, and contribute to, their communities as valued members. This is
a perfect occasion to find out if your child/adult may be eligible for services through
the department. You may take this opportunity to ask questions and to network with
other parents. Open to the public, Free.

Ski Ward Snow Tubing & Lunch
Don’t forget your hat and mittens for this fun day in the snow. Tubing is the perfect
activity for all levels and with up to 8 lanes, 2 lifts and over 200 tubes at Ski Ward in
Shrewsbury, MA, you’re guaranteed to have a great time! Everyone will leave at 9 a.m.
on Saturday, February 2, 2013 and enjoy a lunch at the Chinese Buffet, then return at 4
p.m. The cost is $40.00 and will provide the tickets for tubing, as well as lunch.
Point Breeze Dance
On Wednesday night, February 6, 2013, and March 6, 2013 from 7 - 9 p.m., Point Breeze graciously opens their
doors for a free admission dance night. Limited transportation is available. Contact Ryan Thompson for more

Nomads Adventure Quest
Imagine a place back dropped in the mythical lost civilization of ancient Mayan Ruins, ... and then add Laser Tag,
Black Light Mini-Golf, and a Multiple Belay Climbing Wall, Bowling Lanes and Bumper Cars, 10 Inflatable Bounce
Houses and that’s not the end of it! Video, arcade games, billiard tables, indoor basketball ... I am already tired
just thinking about it! So rest up the night before so you can have a blast, on this day trip to South Windsor, Connecticut on February 23, 2013. Tickets are $40.00 and lunch is included in the cost. Bring extra money for the
arcade. Everyone will leave 9 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.
Vacation Fun Clubs
During school vacation weeks, 40 West Street will be hosting a Vacation Fun Club for children ages 6 - 22. Drop
off and pick up will be on the upper street level of the West Street Day Hab. $25.00 per day/per individual is required. Grant scholarships are available. Registration starts one week prior to vacation club. Community trips,

Boston Science Museum and Lunch
On March 23, 2013, a trip to the Boston Science Museum and lunch will start at 9 a.m. and will return at 6 p.m.
The cost is $45.00 and will include transportation, entrance fee, and lunch. Check out their website for up to
date exhibits. Explore some of the many non-invasive ways doctors look into the human body at the Beyond the
X-ray exhibit. Walk among the free-flying butterflies in this warm conservatory filled with exotic plants. And
experience hurricane-force winds, pick up treasure with a robotic arm, and explore the mysteries of the deep at
Shipwreck! Pirates & Treasures.
Special “O” Winter Games 2013
If you have attended any of your school basketball games back in the day, you may remember hearing the crowd yell: Dribble it (clap-clap), pass it (clap-clap), we want a basket! (clap-clap). Lets
continue the cheer for our Special “O” basketball teams, who have worked so hard to get to the all
day qualifiers on February 10, 2013. The state games will take place on March 9 - 10, 2013. Our
Special Olympics Unified teams (across the board) has offered our participants a world of great
memories, life changing experiences, and the power of self esteem.

On the Air Waves
The Center of Hope Foundation gives a “Live Shout Out” on WESO 970 AM radio every other week at 8:30 - 9
a.m. on Tuesdays. Listen in on what is new with the Center. Current hot topics are showcased about our programs, small businesses, legislation and fund-raising events. Our upcoming radio shows will be on January 8th
and 22nd, February 5th and 19th, and March 5th and 19th of 2013.

The Caring Force
The Caring Force is a human services advocacy movement, empowering a diverse group of individuals who want
to see a stronger human services sector in Massachusetts. The group consists of human service workers & leaders, clients/consumers, volunteers, board members, family & friends of service recipients, supporters from the
business community, elected officials, community supporters and advocates. The mission of The Caring Force
is to empower those who care about the human services sector. They strive to advance a progressive agenda,
which protects vulnerable neighbors and creates a stronger economy with the pay, recognition, and respect human service workers deserve.
After many years of no cost of living increase, and budget cuts, the e-mails, calls and trips to the State House
have paid off. 29,000 human service workers will see their first raise in five years! If you would like to send a
thank you to the Patrick-Murray administration’s office, who’s decision to protect the Salary Reserve from more

This is only a small portion of the generosity donated by the
members of CBA, and of the Chamber of Commerce South Central
Mass. During the December 2012 Fun at Five Networking Event,
held by the Chamber at the Publick House, many more donations
were given and brought directly to the Center’s pantry to help
local families in need this season. Thank you to everyone for your
support, it is greatly needed.

Christmas light Display
Every year the Kaczynski Family spends many hours rigging up lights for a magnificent Christmas display at their
Charlton home. The public can tune in to a local radio station and hear Christmas music play while the lights
dance and fill the night sky. This year the donation box was dedicated to the Center of Hope’s general programs
fund. Thank you to the Kaczynski Family for a wonderful holiday memory and generous donation.
Vienna Restaurant Gives Back
For many years, Vienna Restaurant has been providing Southbridge visitors with
wonderful Austro-Hungarian dining experiences, as well as, giving back to the local community. During the month of December 2012, the Vienna Restaurant has
offered to donate 10% of their gift certificate sales to the Center of Hope Foundation’s general fund. Thank you Vienna Restaurant & Historic Inn for this thoughtful
gift offering.
