ANGRY MOB BEAT HIM UP
Reynold D'Sa
SHASTRI NAGAR: Ravikumar Arya, a 60 year old man who is
a driver in one of the posh societies of Shastri Nagar, Andheri,
was beaten by a mob of angry adults for asking a 10-year-old
boy who is not from the same building to go out and ride his
bicycle because he was riding it dangerously close to his
boss's car. Since Ravikumar did not want to get into any
trouble, he asked the boy to ride the cycle outside the
premises. The assaulters' have claimed to have reacted in this
manner only because the driver had allegedly slapped the
boy.
The ten-year-old boy left the building after abusing the
driver and returned within minutes along with his father and
two other people, who brutally thrashed Arya with a belt and
a metal rod. They assaulted Ravikumar, leaving him with a
broken hand and injured head and also threatened him not to
complain to anyone about the incident.
The incident took place at around 7.30pm on October 1,
when Arya was waiting in the parking lot of Adelphi
Cooperative Housing Society, Shastri Nagar, Andheri West.
The watchman of the building Ashok tried to save Ravikumar
but the assaulters did not listen to him. “They all attacked
together and nobody was listening to me. When I tried
stopping one person, the other would hit me. It was shocking
to see how brutally they were hitting an old man,” said Ashok
Mehetar.
Ravikumar was taken to the hospital where he got five
stitches and his fractured right hand was attended to. Arya is
currently unable to work and is resting at home. A resident
said, “All the assaulters should be arrested the two who are
on the run should
also be arrested.

citizen?”
Ravikumar had refused to file a complaint initially since he
was threatened by the assaulters. “Even in hospital, Arya
received threats from them. They told him they would kill him
if he told the police about the attack. When some of us went
to the police station, we were also threatened. Cowing under
pressure, Arya decided not to file a complaint, but we decided
to support him,” said a resident who did not wish to be
named.
Raman Trikha, Ravikumar's employer said, “We saw the
entire footage just to check if my driver hit the child, which
the assaulters have accused him of doing. But there is no
such footage. We have handed over the footage to the police
and they shall now look into the matter.”
The FIR was registered almost after a week where the
residents of the society have signed a petition and submitted
to the Amboli Police station along with the CCTV footage
where the entire incident is captured. While Mohammad
Hasan, one of the four accused was arrested, the video clip of
the incident recorded by the CCTV camera in the building
went viral on social networking sites after LOCA
(Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association) a local
organization uploaded it on their Facebook page.

S e pte mbe r showed that these
commercial establishments have failed to
adhere to the Maharashtra Fire
Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act
2006.
According to a report prepared by the
Mumbai Fire Brigade, it conducted a
survey of 507 buildings between July
2015 and September 2015. "It was found
that of these 507 buildings, 278 had not
complied with the provisions of the
Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life
Safety Measures Act 2006," said the
report.
These 278 include high-rise residential
and commercial establishments, malls
and hotels. Notices were issued for deficiencies in their firefighting equipment. A
fire officer said that they have issued notices to 11 malls in western suburbs after
conducting inspection. "These include seven in Bandra, two in Khar and two in
Santacruz," said the officer. Malls in Bandra west to which notices were issued are
Kenil Worth Mall, Square Mall, New Beauty Centre, M/s. Subarbia Mall, M/s.
Reliance Trendz Ltd., and M/s. Globus Stores Pvt. Ltd. The malls in Khar are Link
Corner Mall, Crystal Shoppers Paradise Mall, Shreeji Plaza and the ones in
Santacruz are Highlife Mall, Reliance Hiper Mall and Pramukh Plaza.
Apart from issuing the notices, the fire brigade has informed the managing
bodies of these buildings about the measures that would be taken in case of noncompliance like disconnection of electricity and water supply. "Further prosecution
will be initiated in case the fire safety norms are not complied with within the time
frame," added the officer.
A civic official said that Kenilworth Mall, Pramukh Plaza, and Parekh Market in
Opera House were asked to comply with fire safety norms earlier. "As they failed to
comply with the norms the civic law department has initiated legal action against
them which would be followed by prosecution," added the official.
The fire brigade has issued Notices to other malls for not keeping their
firefighting system operational. "They have been given time to comply with the fire
safety norms and get their firefighting systems operational within a specified time,
" said the civic official.
The decision to undertake a special fire safety drive in all high-rise buildings
across the city was taken by the fire brigade following a fire in a high-rise building
in Powai recently.

MEALYBUGS ATTACK ON THE CITY'S RAIN TREES HAS BEEN A CAUSE OF CONCERN SINCE 2010
Janhavi Samant
ANDHERI: Trees in Andheri are dying at an
alarming rate, which has worried the local
residents. If the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation's (BMC) garden department is
to be believed, they too are finding it hard to
save the green cover.
“Andheri is one of the worst hit among
the western suburbs. Currently, at least 25
trees are dead," said Vijay Hire, the garden
superintendent and tree officer in the BMC.
He blames it on the Mealybugs menace in
the city that originated in the 'town side' of
the city and is now spreading to the western
suburbs.
He added that the BMC has decided to
hack the dead trees and plant more in their
place. "If we are hacking 10 trees, we are
planting 20. We need the support of local
residents to ensure these new plantations
survive," said Hire.
The Mealybugs attack on the city's rain
trees has been a cause of concern since
2010. The BMC has been brainstorming with
several botanical experts on solutions for the
same. One solution given to the BMC by the
National Bureau of Agriculturally Important
Insects (NBAII) in Bangalore and the
College of Agriculture in Pune was, use of
lady beetles. "We are looking into all
possible measures-chemical, physical and
biological - to save the infested trees.
Pesticides too have been spread on these
trees. So far, we have not had any success,"
said Hire.
The BMC has appointed horticulturist Dr
Subhash Chavan from Dapoli's Dr Balasaheb
Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth. Locals
however feel that the BMC isn't doing much
about saving the dying trees. "Hacking the
dead trees and planting double the number
of saplings is no solution. Instead, the BMC
should take some stringent steps in saving
these trees. They are rain trees and we are
already facing a bad monsoon. It takes rain
trees time to grow. Why not save them?"
said Nimisha Utture, a marketing
professional staying in Veera Desai Road.
Andheri is said to have more than 1,000
trees affected by the parasitic Mealybug.
Around 20-25 trees are from the New link
road between Juhu JVPD signal and DN
Nagar alone. According to BMC's garden
department, Durandar Marg, Military Camp
Road, Veera Desai Road are other areas in
Andheri where the trees have been affected
by Mealybug menace.
In Andheri, the local residents have tried
spreading medicine for small trees. They
have also started a support group called
'Raasta Chaap' to save trees. "We don't
know what the BMC is doing. On our part,
we are planting new saplings to replace the
affected ones," Sherley Singh, activist who
stays in Juhu. She also insisted that
residents should promptly inform the BMC in
case they see more trees getting infested in
their areas.

doctor from an Andheri hospital. She also added that
special attention should be paid to hygiene. “Such
humid and hot weather demands extra attention to
your skin which is otherwise prone to boils, heat rashes
and fungal infection. Diet should also be less spicy and
oily,” she added.
Doctors also suggest use of anti-fungal powder on
forehead, neck, back and underarms. The onset of
October heat is taking its toll on Mumbaikars health as
doctors get more dehydration cases. Excessive
weakness, body-ache and nausea, these are few
symptoms seen in the patients coming to physicians.
With the Navratri on and high humidity levels (8090%), doctors advice people to stay hydrated.
The rising humidity and temperature on a rise has
also triggered to rising number of lung infection and
viral fever cases say doctors.“A lot of people feel under
the weather when the season changes. We are getting
lots of throat infection and respiratory cases along with
dehydration,” said Dr Pratit Samdhani, general
physician, Jaslok hospital.
Doctors, however, are already urging people to
spend minimum time under the sun and to use sunprotection when they venture out. They have warned
that more people may be attacked by more serious
diseases, such as dehydration, gastroenteritis and
jaundice. Dr Anil Ballani, consulting physician at
Lilavati hospital said, “Viruses thrive in hot and humid
weather and that's why we are seeing rise in
respiratory infection, gastroenteritis.”
Doctors say that preventive measures against such
common ailments are most simple and easy to follow.
“The first rule is safe drinking water; people should boil
water and drink it. They should avoid cold water or soft
drinks, especially ice in juices as it is extremely
unhygienic,” said Dr Ballani. Also, consumption of icecreams, cold water and soft drinks, especially after
coming home from the sun, leads to sore throat and
cold.
It's best to take preventive measures and follow
doctor's orders to be ailment free in the October heat.

Is politicization of the
Dadri issue justified?
SM KABEER/MM
On the night of September 28, 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq
and his 22-year-old son Danish were dragged out of their
home in Bisada village in Uttar Pradesh's Dadri district, and
brutally attacked by a mob of 200 on the suspicion that the
family had consumed beef. But the matter turned to the worst
when politicians started visiting the place one after another.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
JUDAH
SAMUEL
Director of Marketing - INDIA, Israel Ministry of Tourism
Israel is one of the most secured and safe tourist destinations and
has so much to visit. The prominent and most sought after places
includes Holy place the magical city of Jerusalem. Here we have roots
of three major religions and where the Bible comes alive. Another
destination is “The Dead Sea” which is amazing and a must to visit
along with Massada and Qumran. Those who enjoy nightlife, we
have Tel Aviv for them. It is one of the best rated in the world for
nightlife. The city of Haifa is also sought after in the north and the
port city of Eilat, in the extreme south on the shores of the Red Sea.
The area around the Sea of Galilee which has the city of Tiberias. One
must see that how Israel has made a desert bloom with year of
research and mastered the art of Agriculture despite of the lack of
water. It is worth mentioning that Israel is blessed with the Dead,
Med, Red and the Sea of Galilee.
Aamir Shaikh, 30: India being a
democratic country, should respect each
other's opinions. It should not matter
whether someone is Muslim, Hindu or
Christian. Every religion should be
respected. After banning beef everyone is
suffering especially the poor people, the
other meat is also costly these days.
Ankur Jain, 32: According to me, if you
want to ban you should ban everything
and not beef alone. Or else let everyone
eat anything they want. Incidents like
Dadri should not be encouraged at all. The
politicians who are visiting Dadri should
stop and should not politicize the issue.
Satnarayan Prajapati, 30: Whatever is
happening is really bad. People are trying to
kill others because the they are eating what
their religion doesn't approve of. In a
democratic country, nothing should be
banned considering the religion angle. If we
keep doing this, we will reach a point where
we will not be allowed to eat anything at all.
Tanushree Singh, 25: It is a matter of
eating food. Nobody should tell you what
to eat and what not to eat. If a democratic
country does not give you that much
freedom where you get to choose what to
eat, what is the whole point of being
democratic? Politicians should stay away
from these matters as far as possible.
Dhruv Gaur, 27: It is funny how in a
democratic country like India you do not
have the freedom to eat what you want.
The government should intervene in this
matter to solve it and not to politicize it and
make matters worse, before the whole
country starts fighting with each other over
beef.
Rahul Sirsikar, 29: India is a free country
and everyone should eat what they want.
But if the government has decided to ban
certain things we need to respect the law,
but having said that if the people feel
someone has broken the law or done
something wrong violence is not the way to
express it. You cannot kill people for this.
Mahesh Devrani, 25: Politicians are
playing games like they usually do. They
should at least leave out people's eating
preferences. Just sometime back, they
banned meat in Mumbai for Jains. Now are
they going to do the same for other
religions too? It is just food we should not
make a huge issue out of it.
Ravi Purohit, 27: I am a vegetarian but
that doesn't mean I demand a ban on
things I do not eat. It is a food cycle, and is
part of evolution. Our politicians need to
understand that. Eating beef or pork
doesn't make anyone bad. What happened
at Dadri should be condemned but the
politicians are politicizing it for votes.
Sanjay Mallah, 32: Half a billion citizens
are unable to eat three meals, abject
poverty, filthy streets, and women raped
on buses with iron rods. Politicians need to
focus on fixing these problems instead of
lynching an innocent man and then
politicizing the issue. People of a free
nation should be given the freedom to eat
what they want.
PEOPLE’SPAGE 07
Israel has become a popular destination in the recent past. It has
numerous tourist destinations from ancient to most modern which
are gaining momentum across the globe. It is considered Holy by
the three main world religions: Judaism, Islam and Christianity is
home to sites that are Holy for Christians ranging from Jesus' life
and death, to many sites mentioned in the Bible and in New
Testament. Visiting the various places is a unique experience since
faith alongside history empowers the religious experience of the
pilgrim. Senior journalist MEWATI SITARAM in conversation
with Judah Samuel...
Why should a tourist visit Israel?
Israel is an exotic destination with lots to offer.
Though it may be located in the Middle- East, it
cannot be compared to any country in the MiddleEast. It has a combination of old and new, ancient
and modern and of course the only vibrant
democracy in the Middle- East.
Which months are good for tourists to travel
to Israel?
Generally the whole year is perfect to visit Israel
which has four seasons -Spring, Summer, Autumn
and Winter and the wonderful Mediterranean
climate. However, spring in April and Autumn in
November are pleasant but summer is mostly popular for tourists
from the West.
How many days would you suggest in Israel for a good
holiday?
Israel has vast treasure to offer its tourists. Most of the tour operators
offer package tours for 7 to 8 nights. It is advisable to opt for nine to
ten days tour which will do justice to such an exotic and amazing
destination and especially when Foreign International Tourists like to
do their tour as per their choice.
How much money should be budgeted for the same?
Israel is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the world. It
caters to all types of tourists from average travellers, budget
travellers to high-end travellers. Israel has all types of
accommodations. There are luxury hotels of World class and reputed
International hotel chains. There are normal rooms where bed and
breakfast are offered. The Israel even has kibbutz guest houses
which has every type to suit the pocket.
Which are prominent tourist places to visit?
Where can Indians experience authentic Israeli food?
The Falafal and Shawarma (Israeli style) is very popular and easily
available in Israel. Tourists who are strict vegetarian need not worry
about availability of vegetarian food, which is extensive. Israel is a
combination of different cultures. When Israel was born in 1948,
there was an influx of the Jewish people from all over the world into
Israel. Every country has different food habits, so whoever came,
brought with them different food habits, which Israel happily
adopted.
How many tourists from Mumbai and India have visited in
the last two years?
Israel considered India to be a major tourist potential. The numbers
of tourists are on the upward trend year after year. There have been
close to 45000 tourists from India visiting Israel and with a slight
increase over the last couple of years. We have established tourist
office in India which helps tourists from India to visit
Israel.
What role does tourism Israel play for Indian
tourists?
The role of Tourism office in India is to provide
logistic support to tour operators to operate groups
and FITs to Israel. It also encourages MICE
movement to Israel. It is the best address for Israel in
India for any Indian tourist. We facilitate and educate
the travelling public and tour operators about the
destinations and facilitate them to organize their
groups etc to visit Israel.
How important is India for Israel as far as
tourism is concerned?
The sky is the limit when it comes to co-operation between India and
Israel in the area of trade. There could not be better friendly nations
than India and Israel as the warm relations are blooming periodically
and in better speed. When this happens there has to be exchange of
people to people and tourism to each other's countries. It is a basic
foundation how people learn about each other. The Indians are loved
by Israeli's; even common man of the street knows about India and
they are very happy to welcome them.
Are there any direct flights from India to Israel?
ELAL the national carrier of Israel flies direct from Mumbai to Tel Aviv
thrice a week in summer and four times a week in winter. Israel is
connected with other international airlines too. Turkish Airlines which
connects Mumbai and Delhi and flies via Istanbul to Tel Aviv. Many
groups are also flying on Gulf carriers to Amman and entering Israel
by road. The distance from Amman Airport to the Israeli border is
about just two hours' drive. The Israeli Tourism Ministry is
encouraging Indian carriers to start operations to Israel. There is
tremendous scope for traffic between the two countries and once
connectivity improves, tourism is bound to increase between the two
countries.

World Cerebral Palsy Day marked
VILE PARLE: Vile Parle's Nanavati hospital organised a first of its kind
meet for differently-abled and normal school children last week to
commemorate 'World Cerebral Palsy' day. According to the hospital
authorities, this is its first attempt to make a disable-friendly society.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Rujuta Mehta, Consultant Pediatric
Orthopedic and Pediatric Head Surgeon, Nanavati Super Specialty
Hospital said, “The intention was to emphasis on the need to create
public awareness about barriers to accessibility for cerebral palsy
individuals and their increased amalgamation in the social
mainstream.” She added that the event was a first step in their
attempt to dispel the myth that a neurological disorder like cerebral
palsy comes in the way of living a normal life or enjoying life with
peer groups, and also to raise voice for barrier-free India.”
Dr Mehta said that as an institution, Indian Academy of Cerebral
Palsy (IACP) and Nanavati hospital is committed to eradicate
misconceptions about cerebral palsy and other such disorders. The
event at Nanavati hospital went beyond paintings and also showed
exhibits in the form of cardboard ramps designed by noted artist
Haresh Mehta which are economically feasible and can help in easy
navigation of cerebral palsy patients. The event saw more than 600
participants registering their presence where children afflicted with
cerebral palsy, normal school children, parents, doctors and people
from different walks of life had a fun-filled morning filled with hues of
colours and festooned with balloons.
“Teams of children from schools in the western zone from Bandra
to Andheri participated enthusiastically with children having cerebral
palsy to portray the various issues affecting the differently-abled
people in their day-to-day life,” added Dr Mehta.
Elucidating on the need for an upgrading of infrastructure, Keyur
Perla, 1st year BMS student stated, “The government need to be
made aware of the problems faced by differently-abled people in
their everyday life and accordingly, infrastructure in the country
should be modified. The changes which need to be implemented
with immediate effect include installations of ramps while boarding a
bus, lowering the height of a train's gangway for easy access and
increased automation for those with motor skill problems.”
Anuradha Perla, mother of Keyur, said, “Those afflicted with
cerebral palsy also need to be increasingly brought under the cover
of medi-claim owing to the rising costs in treatments for medical
disorders.” Manmohan Modi, an entrepreneur who attended the
event said, he had to face the peculiar problem of being refused a
driving license citing a judgmental lapse while giving his driving test
though he had cleared all the crucial levels in the test. “People to a
large extent still consider disorders like cerebral palsy to be a social
stigma though perceptions are fast-changing and people are
becoming more amicable and more understanding towards the
disabled-friendly,” said Modi.

the Housemates can expect from her, she boldly replied,
"They can love me, they can hate me, but they can't ignore
me."
Turns out to be that her media man, Bollywood PR guru
Dale Bhagwagar has asked her to be extremely strong in
what he calls the House of Scandal. My brief to Mandana
includes being "daringly audacious," he admits. "She is still
learning Hindi, so she needs to be more expressive and hardhitting to make an equal impression as the other
contestants."
Dale's second PR client in the House this year is Vikas
Bhalla. "Vikas is a charmer. Though he may take a little time
to open up and get comfortable. Once he does, you may see
how he can be one of the most likeable guys on the show."
The public relations expert is reluctant to reveal his third
PR client on BB9. "He's an ace, and a perfect fit for Bigg
Boss," is all Dale divulges here. Whoa! Three PR clients in one
Season!
But that's no first for Dale, as he has handled PR for a
total of 17 names that have been on Bigg Boss since the first
season. This season will take the total to 20, and maybe
further with a Wild Card Entry. Last year, the publicist handled
the media for the spunky Sonali Raut, the gritty Aarya Babbar
and the flamboyant Rahul Mahajan. So who could be his third
client in BB9?
Dale informs, "He's a man who will stand for what he
believes in. His image was tarnished once, but you will be
surprised, how disciplined and cultured he really is. But that
does not mean he won't shock you out with dramatics. Trust
me; he will." Aha! Could that be the dashing Aman Verma?
Wonder what this publicist eats, how he thinks, and what
he coaches his clients! Quite an enigma!! A season ago, Dale
was himself officially invited to participate in Bigg Boss, but
preferred to skip it, saying he's "not cut out for it." Huh!
The launch of 'Pyaar Bepanah', an album of just ghazals, comes as a surprise at a time where only single tracks are
released, performed live by Sa Re Ga Ma Pa fame singer Jazim Sharma. K J Singh of Asli Music said, "Asli music might
not always be in the limelight. But it's always there,” about the same.
The ghazal night was packed with people, known faces likes of Anup Jalota who was first to arrive, singer Harshdeep
Kaur, Javed Ali, MItali Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer, lyrisist Ameeta Parusram, Rajkumar Rizvi, Brij Bhushan Kabra, Jolly
Mukherjee, Rahul Vohra, K J Singh, Sowmya Raoh, Sahiba, singer Smirti Minocha, Ashoo Punjabi, among others.

Amitabh Bachchan interacts with fans on his 73rd Birthday.
A
B's
touching gesture
BY KV RAMAN
Mere words are inadequate to intensely commend Amitabh Bachchan
for his most touching gesticulation for roping in Anivesh Srivastava, son
of late Aadesh Srivastava to compose music for his forthcoming
television shows about to go on air shortly following his untimely death.
It is the greatness of Amitabh to have borne all the medical expenses
towards Aadesh's medical treatment both abroad and in India. Aadesh
meant a lot for Amitabh Bachchan and they were just not friends but
Bachchan treated him like a extended family member. His death has
shattered him to a great extent. How many of those from the music
fraternity and film fraternity came forward to help Aadesh when he was
terminally ill? It was the one and only Amitabh Bachchan. That's the
greatness of Bachchan. If it is to be believed he has also taken care of
late Prakash Mehra's medical expenses when Prakashji was in Kokilaben
Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Amitabh Bachchan is an example to many
actors and all those connected to films.
It was a double whammy for the
audience. Burning the mid night oil to
ensure the completion and success of
the film “Love Exchange,” the producer
hosted trailer and music launch of the
film “Love Exchange”.
While they flaunt the tiara of fame
and popularity, Mumbai's glamour and
music brigade showed up in number at
the trailer and music launch of the film
“Love Exchange”.
Renowned names from the Music
industry and Bollywood were the
biggest attraction at the high-end
trailer and music launch of the film
“Love Exchange.”
The trailer and music launch of the
film “Love Exchange” saw the entire
cast of the film including Raj V Shetty ,
Nadia Ali Shirazi, Mohit Madan, Jyoti

P a h w a , N i l u Ko h l i , S h a a m a
Deshpande, Jaidev Kumar, Kumaar,
Advik Mahajan, Roopali Krishna Rao,
Subodh Narkar and Marketing
consultant Girish Wankhede.
It was a nostalgic moment for the
team. Mohit and Jyoti thanked each
other for being encouraging co-stars
and Producer and director for having
each other for them like a great team.
Lyricist Kunar and Jaidev Kunar were
present too.
The trailer and music launch of the
film “Love Exchange” saw the star
studded line from Bollywood and music
fraternity which will include Dev Negi,
Master Saleem, Simerjit Kumar, Javed
Bashir (Jimmy), Shipra Goyal, Sanj V,
Sharada Pandit. Director of the film
Raj. V. Shetty says “When you fall in
love and get ready to marry, see that
you know your partner, their culture,
their friends, their neighbors, their
relatives. Then get married.”
Neetu Chandra turns producer
Neetu Chandra has now turned producer. The actress has gone ahead to produce a
film which her brother Nitin Chandra has directed.
The film is titled Once Upon A Time in BIHAR
and is a hard hitting tale on the Bihar city and what
follows. One hears the film is very politically
inclined and has also taken names of some big
politicians in Mumbai as the story takes a turn to
this city.
Neetu says “I believed in the subject and the
story was very well written. I want to be known for
quality work and producing this film only happened
because of its story line. Its a hard hitting subject
and I don't expect it to be liked by all but it'll surely
make people think.”
Mohit Chauhan records the song for
Once Upon A Tme in Bihar
along with director Nitin Chandra. The film is
produced by Neetu Chandra.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOW THE BIG F...
After having done fiction and reality shows, the
prospect of becoming a host was an exciting one.
And when MTV came to me with this interesting
concept, I didn't have to think too long about it. I
knew I wanted to do it. Viewers can see me in a
slightly naughty avatar as MTV Big F is a show that
talks about the desires of young India and gives
voice to those hidden fantasies and secret
encounters that make life so exciting. The show's
concept of bringing the untold tales of the youth to
life is very unique and is sure to become a rage
among youngsters.
THE PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS RAN INTO ALL
KINDS OF CONTROVERSIES...
The show is based on reality. Every individual
certain aspects to their lives, which will be shown.
The show is slightly bold and in accordance with
the youth today. These are real stories involving
people's personal lives. The audience will be able
to see such things and understand what to do or
not to do in such situations.
YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH BIGG BOSS...
The experience was amazing...its basically living
life with cameras. According to me, even if one
lives with cameras in reality, he or she can change
a lot and can realise his or her mistakes. People will
be in a better position to judge where they are
wrong. In reality, you cannot catch hold of
someone who talks bad about you or does bad to
you. So Bigg Boss experience is basically leading a
life with cameras, while we lead one without
cameras. I feel Bigg Boss is a great format. I
learned a lot by being in the Bigg Boss house. It
was a great experience and I really enjoyed myself.
AN EXPERIENCE TO SHARE...
People love me a lot and they literally behave with
me like how they saw me in the show. Just the
other day, I bumped into this Sikh family who were
in the lift with me. The gentleman tapped my
shoulder and told me 'Aur Gautam Paaji, kaise ho?'
I told him 'Bahut badiya paaji.' His daughter and
mother got really excited. They were giving me
blessings while I was leaving from the lift. They
were so genuine that I could feel their positive
vibes reach me. I felt so good. They told me that I
am a great person and will do great in life. People
have formed a connection with me now. They want
to see me somewhere. People want to see me
doing bigger films. They love me and bless me as
genuinely as my mother does.
HOW HAS ALL THIS INFLUENCED YOUR
LIFE?
Earlier, I used to get temperamental with small
issues. This does not happen anymore. Before
losing my cool, I think of ways that I can control my
anger. I am now a very calm person. I have
realised that life is too short to keep grudges
against people. I believe people should live their
life well. Do their work. Love their family and
everyone else around.
YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH
SALMAN...
It was a great experience working with Salman. He
is a nice man and is extremely helpful. He speaks
very respectfully. He is very fun loving.
ON YOUR BOLLYWOOD DEBUT...
I have got a few offers but now I am just looking
for the best script. As an outsider there is a lot to
analyse with respect to the banner or corporate
backing. I get regular offers but I am not picking it
up because it does not seem appealing to me. The
film should be able to reach its target audience in
every way possible. So right now, I have only tied
up with Balaji Telefilms.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOURSELF?
I am an extremely simple person. People can easily
relate with me. I meet people like I know them. I
never get bored or aggravated. I get blessings
from one and all and am extremely happy about it.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS
FROM NOW?
I am not ever certain about tomorrow. I don't plan
too much in the future and instead focus on the
present.

always supportive of her work and eggs on to do better. Tara says “I am lucky to have
bagged this film. Not only are the actors so great and friendly but the director Vikram Sir too
makes the entire film worth it. He reads out stories to us every evening once he has written
and makes sure we all are one big happy family. Its fun to shoot such films as you don't even
realise when time just flows by.” A candid shot of them together in between the shoot.

Get Connected
I
n the age of Smart Phone and Smart Cars, the only thing
missing was a smart Home… but not anymore. The latest
houses are now being integrated and being transformed
to a smart home. A smart home basically integrates all your
lighting, curtains, air conditioning, audio video equipment,
CCTV, access control, burglar alarm system, sensors and
other electrical gadgets to interact with each other and
perform multiple actions with a click of a single button on
your smart phone, you read correctly now your home can be
controlled with your smart phone.
Imagine this… if you feel like watching a movie with a
perfect theatre like experience with your loved one, the steps
to follow are:
1. Dim or switch off your lights.
2. Close the curtains.
3. Switch off your fan.
4. Switch on your AC.
5. Switch on your AV equipment.
6. Turn your TV to your DVD/Blu ray mode.
7. Finally sit down and watch your movie.
Now with a smart home, all these steps can be avoided by
just pressing one button called 'watch movie' on your smart
phone. All the above actions would be performed for you.
The common misconception about smart home or home
automation is that it's a luxury product and very expensive.
Well today, solutions start from Rs. 50,000/-. You could start
by automating your living room and next year upgrade the
automation to include your bedroom and children's room if
required.
It is also about utility and energy saving, with smart
sensors giving inputs about your home to your servers every
second. Your home knows exactly how and what you like
from music to lighting. Your curtains would automatically
close if the room is becoming too hot to reduce load on your
air conditioning. The lights will automatically switch off when
there is ample ambient lighting in the room or only switch on
to maintain ambient lighting in the room. In case the room
detects that there has been nobody present for long, it can
switch off the lighting and AC for you. Your house can alert
you if you have forgotten to turn off your water geyser. You
can put it off while you are actually out on a weekend
getaway. You will always be notified that someone is ringing
your doorbell and you can open the door for them while you
are at your office. A loved one will never have to wait for you
to return from work and can get comfortable by sitting
inside.
BEFORE DECIDING TO AUTOMATE YOUR HOME:
1. Always get your Solution provider involved by checking the kind of
projects they have done before.
2. Your Automation solution provider can provide you with a lot of
choices. Don't get confused. Listen to them and list what solutions you
need right away and what you need to keep as option.
3. Always get an Automation solution provider involved while you plan to
renovate your Home. This is since the Company you may choose
eventually to install in your home may require some special wiring which
can't be installed once your home is done up.
4. There are solutions available for existing home users who don't want to
redo their wiring and for houses ready to go under the hammer in both the
cases solutions are slightly different but available.
5. Home Automation is not a product but a solution. So the amount spent
by your friend may be higher or lower than the quote given to you
depending on the level of integration required by you.
6. A good integration can last more than a decade so don't opt out of
electrical protection devices by choosing sub standard electrical products to
save a few bucks.
7. You need switches even if your house is automated because you just
don't want to wake up from your sleep and try to find your mobile to turn
on a light. Switches are always placed in strategic locations to make your
life easier.
For free consultancy and to know more about Automation options for
your Home contact Smart Nest - Home Automation Solutions on

Tips to choose the right lip color
· Always choose a lip color that gets
well with the natural shade of your lips
and skin. For instance those having
dark skin tone must choose a lip color
in shades like plums, wines and deep
reds. For those having light brown skin
tone must opt for a lip color in pink or
orange shades. For those having olive
skin tone must go for a lip color in the
brownish red, light brown and raisin
colors shades.
· Try to get two different shades of lip
color – one dark and one light. Use the
lightlip color for day use and the darker
one for evening and night.
· For subtle look, choose matte and
cream finished lip colors, while for a
glamorous look you must use a lip
color in high-gloss. For daily use a
natural-looking lip colorwith a little
shine is always the best option.
· When buying a new lip color also
check the shade in natural light to see
how the color really looks with your skin
tone.
· When choosing a lip color bear in mind
that the color of your hair and color of
your eyes also matters a lot. For lighter
hair shades the lip color should be
brighter and vice versa.
· The most flattering lip colors will be
one or two shades darker than your
natural lip color. To test different shades
of lip color, keep one lip bare and apply
lip color on one lip. If the color is one or
two shade deeper than your natural lip
color, it means you have chosen the
right shade.
· In case you do not get the lip color
shade of your satisfaction, you can also
create your own shade by combining
colors. Just apply each lip color to your
lips and then with the help of a lip brush
blend it properly. This way you can
come with a unique shade that will
complement your appearance.

From October 13-19, "Trees," an
exhibition of recent paintings by
veteran artist Shrikant Jadhav
will be held at Jehangir Art
Gallery.
In the artists' words: I grew
up watching my artist father G.
N. Jadhav painting at our home
cum studio. Being reticent I
loved this medium of expression.
Beauty from his paintings and
also nature from my surrounding
Pune city specially lured me.
With everyone's encouragement
I started expressing myself through painting. I joined Sir J. J. School
of Art for formal education. Enriching magical world of J. J. and
Mumbai life were the two treasures open before me. With a bag full
of prestigious awards and prizes I completed my education. I
Joined the same institution as a lecturer. Along with teaching I
continued participating in group and solo shows in different
galleries. Now retired from service I am painting calm and quitely in
my studio. Relating with defferent moods of nature, being my way
of expression.
I relate myself with nature. Something is constantly pulsating
within the composed appearance. Sometimes in scorching sun and
dusty atmosphere. I sit on a hill crumpling dry leaves at my feet.
The golden hay stands still around me. I watch trees like Palash,
Kateshiwar, Champa and Gulmohar strong and graceful. Their
copious bloom spreads countless reds and oranges along the
skyline. The line and formations of bare branches, forms and
shades of crumpled leaves, silvery stone reflectors, watermarks in
the brook, whispering of hay and on top of all...The copious bloom,
swinging and smiling is ... ME. I have come to greet you!

PLACES FOR LONG
DUSSEHRA WEEKEND
L
ive Khasi Style In Shillong: Ri Kynjai Resort is one of the best places to stay in
Shillong. It is built on a Khasi style. It is one of the most quiet places to stay.
The view of the sun rise as well as sun sets are the highlight of the rooms in
this resort and can prove even a best place for those looking for a calm place
for their honeymoon! Ri Kynjai Resort has one of the best amenities, which you
hardly expect in a place like where it is located, especially in Shillong. The exterior
of this resort in itself has a great aesthetic look gives you the old and new style.
Relive Victorian Luxury In Kalimpong: Silver Oaks hotel in Kalimpong has
everything - very good staff, delicious food, beautiful scenic view, beautifully
decorated corridors, rooms with room heaters, excellent bathroom, and other
facilities - making the stay a very pleasant one.
Retreat To The Jungles In Masinagudi: A completely different experience for
nature lovers. The Mudumalai Reserve continues into the jungle retreat property.
It is not fenced and the chance of spotting a deer and watching a variety of species
of birds is very high. The pool has been made in natural surroundings with a
thoughtful grading of pebbles for wildlife. The holiday place is for those who love
the intense quiet of nature, no landscapes or artificially grown gardens. This is a
peaceful retreat away from the hum drum of city life.
Go Paragliding In Naukuchiatal: A perfect tourist
destination for all hill station lovers. Great place
for adventure and relaxing as well. Best part is,
this small hill station is not so crowded as
compared to its neighbours (Nainital and
Bhimtal), which makes it a perfect one.
Cheese Making In Coonoor: Visiting and staying at
Acres Wild is a "dream come true" due to the
warm bonhomie, good companions, marvellous
food and the sylvan/idyllic surroundings. The
owners and their staff are a motley, yet a lovely
bunch of like-minded people who take care of
their guests like their own family. Though
desolate, but incorrigibly natural and ethereal in
its beauty, the different cottages, straight out of fairy tales, and named after
different kinds of cheese are excellent! Rustic and wild, yet with all the modern day
facilities, this property's a loner's paradise. Of course, it's also a place where one
might get lucky and make new yet very genuine friends, even. Acres Wild with its
distinctly flavoured different kinds of cheese, served fresh every morning at
breakfast, along with the ambience makes life worth living, in the truest sense of
the term!
Rejuvenate Your Mind In Shimla: Marigold was an
enriching experience in terms of a warm welcome
followed by a courteous staff and good food. The
place is ideal for a resort surrounded by
mountains on all sides and a deep valley located at
a good height on the way to Naldehra. The best
part is the silence of the hills where one can relax
and rejuvenate.
Go Himalayan Trout Fishing In Gushain: Famous
for its trout fishing, Gushain is popularly known as
a Trout Country. Insulated within the Kullu Valley,
the town is renowned for its beautiful landscape
and view of the Himalayan peaks. Situated at the
higher elevations, Gushain experiences temperate climate. Though Gushain is an
all year round destination, but the best time to visit the place is from February to
June and again from September to November. The place has a very homely
environment and a lovely view of Nagini River from the balcony. It feels like a
dream location and the quaint looking cottage adds to the feel. The food is simply
wonderful and so is the prompt service and excellent host Christopher. You can go
trekking to a waterfall nearby or enjoy fly fishing
at Nagini.
Tea Tasting In Darjeeling: This is one of the oldest
tea estates in Darjeeling. You can spend some
good time here exploring the way tea is made and
interacting with the locals and estate workers. The
history of the estate is worth learning. You can
also buy some tea from there.
Go Glacier Trekking In Munsiyari: The drive to
Milam village offers the view of lovely snow-clad
mountains, deep valleys, a variety of trees-pine,
bamboo, birds, numerous waterfalls etc. It is truly
panoramic. At an altitude of 4267 mt, and spread
of around 37 sq km, it is the mighty Milam glacier
that makes for a perfect trail for trekking. The Milam Glacier trek is a moderate
trekking experience in India that can be covered between 12-13 days.
Cloud Spotting In Dharamshala: Dharamsala is famous for The Temple of The
Dalai Lama. A place sacred for the Tibetan Buddhists. A place for nature lovers and
lonely travelers. Enjoy the beauty of nature, the snow clad ranges of Dhauladhar,
the tranquility of the temple of Dalai lama. Trekking, sightseeing a must to enjoy
If it was in the USA, the drive from Srinagar to Leh would
have been packaged as one of the best drives in the world.
The four wheel drive through majestic Himalayas where
Drass river runs parallel to the highway, is truly an awe
inspiring sight.
After a night's stay in the houseboat, we left Srinagar to
reach Kargil. A visit to Drass War Memorial and the telescopic
view of the guarded border, evoked feelings of patriotism.
Having 'Langaar' with the army-jawans at a Gurudwara, en
route, intensified this feeling which eventually sublimated
into spirituality.
Next day the stay at Temisgam, turned out to be a
treasure trove. The location and grandeur of Tingmosgang
castle and monastery were worth absorbing. So was the trek
Near Temisgam village
where we came across a tiny settlement that had a unique
characteristic. On entering, we spotted a pagoda gong and a
ladder by the hay. Then we walked through a cave like
passage flanked by doors. On opening one, I was greeted by
laughing children. Their mother showed me the little rooms,
cellar and a terrace with an exquisite view intercepted by a
dish antenna! I saw grandpa rotate a small wheel while
praying and decided to buy one as a souvenir.
It was our lucky day. The guesthouse owner invited us for
high tea in an authentic 'Ladakhi' kitchen of ancient days.
The large place having sparkling pots, pans, a large stove
fitted over ornate frame rendering it
reverence, also had traditional low
tables where
squatting on the
ground, we had 'Pava' and salted
butter- tea. Later we were also treated
to 'Chhaang', the home- made beer
along with a million dollar toothless
smile on grandma's wrinkled face.
The gastronomical journey continued
in Lehtoo where we had Ladakhi
Darshana Doshi
delicacies like Momos, Thukpa and Thenthuk.
In Nubravalley, the camel ride in the desert towards the
barren mountains that shone like gold against the sunlight,
made me feel like a gold hunter as in the movie Mackenna's
Gold. The only difference is we were in no hurry and so did
not ride horses!
Finally, we proceeded towards the jewel of Ladakh, the
mesmerizing Pangonglake. On the way we came across a wall
of guest house having pictures of 'Three idiot' stars who
had stayed there, as well as yaks, marmots and Ibex by the
streams, that has formed an interesting collage in my
memory. However what has got etched is the fresh snowfall
and a dog in meditation who just would not bat its eyelids
even on clicks of cameras. As I got the glimpse of Pangong
Lake, I felt the doors of paradise open completely. The
heavenly feeling continued as we drove along the long stretch
with its ever changing watercolour. Wondering why I had not
visited the Pride of India sooner, I spent the night in the tent.
As I watched the reflection of the moon in silent waters, I
forgot all concerns including the frozen limbs.
The following day, river rafting in Zanskar River was fun,
though the rapids were few. However I will not forget cycling
down from Khardungala pass, World's Highest Motorable
Road, as it helped me get rid of my fear of riding over winding
mountain roads. I learnt that even an edge has a boundary.

achievement so far, Chef Valentina says, “Each time I am able to
deliver an out of the world experience to my guests through my
food, it leaves me unbelievably satisfied and happy to be where I
am, doing what I do, in exclusive conversation with Senior
Journalist MEWATI SITARAM...
Prior to donning the chef's uniform where did you gain
popularity?
One needs to be very perfect with ones career path. Prior to
donning the chef's uniform, I gained popularity in Italy for my
talent as an Opera singer. It was during this time that my fiancé
and now husband, having sampled her culinary creations,
remarked to me - “You should be a Chef!” This was the start of
my journey as a Chef. Though decision was tough but I left no
stone unturned to be a perfect chef.
Switching over from Opera Singer how did you hone your
culinary art?
One has to be a perfectionist in their job of choice. I honed my
skills by working as a Chef Consultant for boutique restaurants
and trainer of traditional Italian cuisine all over Italy. I earned
my stripes and went on to enjoy a successful stint with Sirio
Maccioni's famed Le Cirque in New York. Here I served many
celebrities like Woody Allen and Martha Stewart. A year and a
half later, The Leela Mumbai was very excited to welcome me
as Chef De Cuisine at the newly opened Le Cirque Signature.
How do u feel to be a part of The Leela Mumbai?
I have been very fascinated by India all my life and when I got
the opportunity through Le Cirque to move to India, especially
with a brand like The Leela which represents the essence India, I
was very excited. I have to say that it has been a very exciting
time for me.
What is your opinion about the knowledge of Italian cuisine
amongst the foodies of Mumbai?
I have, since my move to The Leela, I have been interacting with
a lot of our Indian guests who are well travelled and who know
the taste and love their food. The concept of Italian cuisine is
WINE&DINE 17
like the concept of Indian cuisine. The
style of dining is very much like India
where Italians also gather with their
families for their main meal. Hence it is
not very different from the Indian custom
and culture and many Indian guests that I
have met understand Italian cuisine very
well.
Can you recommend your choice of
Mewati Sitaram
wines with a couple of Italian dishes?
Food is just as important as wine in Italian culture. Italian and
other wines are nearly always made with food in mind. Italian
wines are supremely versatile. Matching food and wine is a very
personal thing – although there are classic combinations that
connoisseurs tend to enjoy, the preference of the individual who
is choosing the wine will inevitably prevail. Knowing the
basics, together with learning what you like, will get you a long
way towards a wine and food combination that will delight and
surprise guests. The Indian guests who visit Le Cirque Signature
are well acquainted with food and wine and always want to try
different time and again. We have one of the premium wine
library which stocks hand-picked wines of the World. We have
vast options to offer. I would recommend to our guests who visit
Le Cirque Signature to try pairing our delicious Lobster Salad
with a crisp Viognier, our Black Truffle Risotto with a bubbly
Prosecco, we also have some excellent dessert wine which can
be paired with our range of desserts like Crème Brulee, Baked
Alaska and Tiramisu to name a few.
Which are your two signature non vegetarian and two
vegetarian dishes?
Signature cuisine, aka haute cuisine, avant-garde cuisine or
creative cuisine, has raised the international profile of Italian
cuisine in recent years. The list of signature cuisine is endless
and the name of Le Cirque Signature closely linked to some of
the city's best Italian restaurants for long. Our signature non
vegetarian dishes are Paupiette (Chilean Sea Bass wrapped in
crispy potatoes with Cream Leeks and Red Wine Sauce) and
Lobster Bisque. Our signature vegetarian dishes are Chitarra
(Homemade pasta with pesto and cherry tomato sauce) and
Burrata Ravioli.

How do I know if I am a candidate for
whitening? - Sohail Ahmed, 24
The best option is to visit your dentist to see if
whitening is right for you. Almost anyone can
benefit from tooth whitening. However, here are
a few things to be aware of as some people are
more susceptible to tooth sensitivity than others
particularly:
1 Those with generalized gingival (gum)
recession.
2 Younger individuals in whom dentin is thinner
and the enamel more porous.
3 Individuals with enamel loss exposing
sensitive dentin; this can be due to wear, caused
by grinding habits, or from acid erosion.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
- Jenny K., 22
Bleaching is not always a permanent solution;
the effects may diminish with the passing of
time. Optimally, this period lasts six months to
two years — referred to by dentists as the “fade
rate.” Some studies quote periods of anywhere
from 6 months to 10 years. Although fading is
inevitable, it is possible to slow down the
process by avoiding foods and habits that cause
staining. Some individuals may need a toothwhitening “touch-up” professionally, or with the
home bleaching technique for 1-2 days, once or
twice a year.
How long do the benefits of periodontal
therapy last? - Ashish Chavan, 39
The benefits of periodontal therapy are
determined by the severity of your case before
you were treated. If you have severe problems
with many loose teeth, these teeth may not get
much of a future. You should not invest much in
teeth with a poor future. However, if your teeth
still have good strength despite gum disease
being present, there is no reason why you
should not get excellent long term results if you
properly take care of your mouth after your gum
treatment.
Is gum disease hereditary? - Suresh
Chandiramani, 30
there is a hereditary component to gum
disease. That does not mean that all people
who are pre-disposed towards periodontitis will
get it as severely as did their parent or parents.
However, if you suspect that your parents lost all
or most of their teeth, especially at an early age,
you must be keenly aware that you may have a
tendency to get gum disease more readily than
someone who has poor oral hygiene but a good
resistance to periodontitis.
Can periodontitis be treated only with
non-surgical root planning? - Ramesh
Purohit, 40
Some early forms of gum disease (gingivitis) are
more receptive to non-surgical root planing.
However, even in those cases that will need
gum surgery, the amount and invasiveness of
surgery can be reduced by first having thorough
non-surgical root planning done. We do see on
occasion that patients have had root planning
done with the general dentist and that some
benefits have definitely been achieved.
However, sometimes, the patients have not
been advised that there are still residual
problems which require some surgery to totally
eliminate the gum infection that remains after
the root planning was done.
Avoid brain drain with good food
The brain needs food, just as any other organ - and
the right kind of that. The brain controls all our
actions and thoughts and the food we eat can
affect the brain both in a positive or negative way.
A lot of nutrients and chemicals from our diet
interact with our brain and can do so in a positive
way.
Amino acids are derived from protein-rich foods
that are required for the synthesis of neurons and
neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters behave
like messengers and carry messages from one
neuron to the next one. In a healthy brain,
neurotransmitters are vital for keeping your brain
sharp. These neurotransmitters include dopamine
for immunity and care of the nervous system,
serotonin for moods, sleep, memory and learning,
norepinephrine for alertness and focus, and
acetylcholine for retention of memory and recall.
The brain has a good amount of water and, to
maintain this healthy level, a person needs to drink
7 -8 glasses of water per day. Foods that help keep
the brain healthy:
Blueberries: Berries are extremely good for the
brain and their glycemic index is low with high fiber
content – making them good for the brain.
Blueberries are excellent for memory and learning;
they reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Walnuts: These nuts contain high amounts of
antioxidants which battle against brain cell
damage caused by free radicals in the blood
stream. They improve mental ability and clear the
thought process. Walnuts are also known as “brain
food” and the omega 3 fats found in walnuts aid
brain function. Walnuts control the serotonin level
of the brain – which is a chemical responsible for
our moods.
Lentils and Beans: Beans have plenty of fiber,
vitamins, proteins and minerals and are a rich
source of carbohydrate. The brain uses 20% of the
carbohydrates eaten. The brain needs glucose and
beans can supply this at a steady pace.
Avocado: The monounsaturated fat in
avocados help in blood circulation which, in turn,
aids the brain to function better. They are rich in
antioxidants and control high blood pressure.
Oatmeal: The best way to start the day is with
oatmeal as breakfast. It is packed with fiber and is
good for both the heart and the brain. The energy
produced by eating oatmeal can sustain a person
for long periods.
Pomegranate: As good as blueberries,
pomegranate is rich in antioxidants. Rather than
waste all the fibers present, it is better eaten in the
fruit form rather than as a juice. Pomegranates are
great stress busters.
Chocolate: Chocolate has caffeine and
antioxidants, and of course serotonin, which is the
happy protein. Chocolate can boost the brain and
make you feel light hearted and happy, though
take care – it's the dark chocolate we are talking
about and not the milky one.
Seeds: Sesame, flax and sunflower seeds are
rich in protein and the good fat as well as vitamin E
and minerals like magnesium and zinc.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which
again has antioxidant properties and so prevent
cell damage. They are very good in warding off
Alzheimer's disease.
Carrots: The compound luteolin in carrots
brings down the inflammation in the brain and
helps cells to retain memory.
Tea and Coffee: The caffeine in coffee perks
you up and gets you awake and alert. Tests on
mice show that coffee slows down Alzheimer's
disease. Tea is very good for memory.
Spinach: Most greens and especially spinach
are storehouses for vitamins C and E. They help
the brain tissue to repair and also grow again.
Eggs: The protein and fat in eggs supply energy
to the brain for long stretches of time. Selenium
found in eggs is a mood enhancer; eggs eaten in
moderation are definitely a plus with no cause for
concern.
Retinal Evaluation: The Need
The Human eye is a very complex organ very
closely resembling a modern camera. The retina
is a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that
covers about 65 percent of its interior surface. It
is like the camera film roll on which the images
are captured, when we click a photo. When we
actually "take" a picture with a camera the visible
light reflected from the objects, causes a
chemical change to the photographic film inside
the camera which can be subsequently
developed, to produce a representation (a print).
Same way the light entering the eye are captured
on the Retina and interpreted as images.
Photosensitive cells called rods and cones in
the retina convert incident light energy into
signals that are carried to the brain by the optic
nerve and are interpreted by the brain as Images.
Rods help in visualising in dim light while cones
help in colour vision in light. In the middle of the
retina is a small depression called the fovea or
fovea centralis. It is the centre of the eye's
sharpest vision and the location of most colour
perception. The pupil which acts like a filter,
restricts the extent of light entering the eye. It
constricts in bright light due to which, examining
the periphral Retina becomes a challenge, this
necessitates a pupillary dilatation prior to Retinal
evaluation. To examine the retina, a retina
specialist dilates, or widens, the pupil of eyes
during a comprehensive examination using eye
drops. A retina specialist then uses a special
magnifying lens to exam the retina. The dilation is
reversible after a few hours.
Retina can get adversely affected in a wide
number of diseases prevalent in all age groups.
Myopia or near sightedness which is one of the
commonest eye pathology , can affect the
peripheral Retina . The prevalence of myopia in
India in the general population is about 6.9%.
Myopic patients are more prone to developing
areas of Peripheral retinal thinning due to the
progressive eyeball elongation, called Lattice
Degeneration. Lattice degeneration occurs in
about 7% to 8% of the general population, and of
those affected, about 45% have lattice
degeneration in both eyes. Sometimes Lattice
Degeneration can also be accompanied by
Retinal Holes or tears, which if untreated can lead
to Retinal Detachment and devastating vision
loss.
This condition does not interfere with central
vision or cause any symptoms, so it is often
undetected unless a patient undergoes a
thorough peripheral retinal exam.
Other commonly seen disease affecting the
Retina include Age related Macular Degeneration,
Diabetic Retinopathy , Retinal Vein occlusion,
Macular Hole, Retinitis Pigmentosa, etc.
The prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy in
India, is 18% in urban population with diabetes
mellitus , making it one of the most prevalent eye
diseases. Diabetic Retinopathy causes tiny blood
vessels on the Retina to bleed, which usually
starts as pin point bleeding spots but gradually
increases to large bleeding patches on the Retina
causing Swelling of the Retina and consecutive
vision loss. The disease is very much manageable
in its early stages however unfortunately there
are no symptoms of Early Diabetic Retinopathy,
hence the condition is often missed and can be
picked up only on subjecting every Diabetic
Patient to a dilated Retinal examination.
WHEN SHOULD ONE SUSPECT RETINAL DISEASE?
Sudden onset loss of vision
Seeing Light Flashes in one or both eyes which are more than
occasional
Seeing a lot of threadlike or dot like floating particles called
Floaters.
Experiencing a shadow or curtain that affects any part of the vision
Seeing distorted Objects
Seeing dark spots in the central Field of vision

Muscular Dystrophy:
Ayurveda offers hope
Sanjeev Pendharkar
Even in the age of information revolution, the word muscular
dystrophy (MD) is little known to people. It is a condition which
disables the people by almost 100% forcing him to depend on
others help for everything including, bathing, eating or just drinking.
Besides this total dependence on others, the pain and other
secondary problems caused by MD are usually beyond imagination
for a child. While it by and large affects males, women serve as
carriers of the disease. Inadequate awareness about of the
offspring – nature of the disease often results in a family having
many MD children and/or their potential carriers.
The victims of Muscular Dystrophy continue to be the children of
a lesser God with very little effort and hardly any attention given to
understand and solve their problems. While the Duchene Muscular
Dystrophy (DMD) patients in developed countries could live upto
20-23 years of age the DMD children in India die by 13-17 years.
Owing to the poor support system available in India and the
ignorance of the public, our children are dying 10 years in advance
as compared to their counter parts in the developed nations.
Muscular Dystrophy refers to a group of degenerative, muscle
destroying, Neuro Muscular Disorder diseases to which no cure is
available till date. The cause of the disease is said to be 'a defective
gene' and the disease is hereditary as well as 'instant' by its nature.
The progressive deterioration which usually starts from external
muscles of the body spreads to destroy the internal muscles such as
lung and cardiac muscles.
Though there are variations across the nine major types of
Muscular Dystrophy all of them, collapse the normal living ability of
the afflicted. Particularly, the two types Duchene Muscular
Dystrophy and Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) are the most
common and are killer diseases too.
Although the disease would be present from conception,
symptoms to not usually develop until the child is 5 or 6 years old.
The natural course of the disease is that the symptoms result from
weaknesses of the muscles. Inevitably, the weakness progresses
until the child can no longer walk and requires the use of a
wheelchair. The age at which this happens varies, but most children
are between 8 and 10 years old and virtually all use a wheelchair by
age 12.
Therapy that delays/reverses degeneration:
No treatment is at present known in any system of medicine
which has any definite influence upon Muscular Dystrophy. The
absence of specific treatment for Muscular Dystrophy makes it all
the more important to consider complimentary Ayurvedic
approaches of treatment.
The Ayurvedic Rasayana drugs are
well-known for their effect to delay or
reverse the progressive muscular
degeneration. In addition, til-masha
pinda sweda (TMP) therapy is a special
muscle empowering procedure using
extracts of Shatavari (Asparagus
Racemosus) and other additional
ingredients all cooked in the decoction of
cow milk. The paste is tide in cotton cloth
and use for giving a circular massage on
the muscles for about half an hour to the
patient. This is followed by 21 days. This
procedure helps stabilize the sarcolema
membrane defect in the muscle fibres. It
also removes excess fat deposition in the
muscle and increases muscle power.
The patients are also prescribed to
practice yogic Asanas like Yogic
Muktasana, Pawan Muktasana and
Bhujangasana. The Bhastrika Pranayam
may support Cardio Respiratory system
and may improve process of beta oxidation at cellular level.
Research into gene therapy, dystrophies gene sequencing for
carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis test by 11-20 weeks of
pregnancy may eventually provide treatment to stop the
progression of sometimes of Muscular Dystrophy. Current treatment
is designed to help prevent or reduce deformities in the joints and
the spine and to allow people with Muscular Dystrophy to remain
mobile as long as possible.
CAN YOU GET SICK FROM THE GYM?
Did you know that it's possible to get sick
from spending too much time at the gym?
Even if you don't overdo it on exercise,
there's still a higher risk of you contracting
an illness. How is this possible?
Exercise Reduces Glutamine: Glutamine
is an amino acid that is found in your
muscles -- in fact, your muscles are about
61% glutamine. Not only does this amino
acid transport nitrogen through your body,
but it also plays an important role in your
immune function. A lack of glutamine can
lead to reduced immunity to disease.
When you do exercise (particularly
strength training), you burn a lot of
glutamine. Your muscles are depleted of the
vital amino acid, and your immune system
suffers. Even if you don't overdo it on the
exercise, immediately after your workout
your immune system is a bit underactive.
You may end up getting sick just because
you are low on glutamine. Only after you've
eaten your post-workout meal will you get
your glutamine levels back up to normal,
thus restoring healthy immune function.
Over-Exercising Suppresses Immune
Function: If you exercise too much, it's very
likely that your immune system will suffer as
a result. Training for too long at a very high
intensity can make it more likely that you
will become sick.
Studies have discovered that doing more
than 90 minutes of high intensity exercise
will suppress your immune system. The
reduction in immune function can last for as
long as 24 hours, meaning you're more
likely to get sick for an entire day following
your high intensity exercise. If you overdo it
often, you're definitely at a much greater
risk of being sick.
Exercising in the Wrong Conditions Can
Lead to Sickness: If you spend time working
out in the warm gym and then walk outside
without sufficient protection for your chest,
it's very likely that you will catch a cold. The
sudden change in temperature can cause
your body to react strongly, leading to
illness.
At the same time, if there is a lot of dust
in the air, you may end up inhaling a lot
more than you would when sitting at your
desk or lying in bed. Seeing as you're
breathing in massive lungfuls of air, you're
going to inhale a lot of dust or dirt. Those
particles can cause infections in your lungs,
throat and nasal canal.
You're Exposed to More Germs: Your
gym is probably one of the dirtiest places
you visit every day. There are millions of tiny
microbes, pathogens and germs living in
your gym, but they're far too small for your
eyes to see. Every time you grip a barbell,
hold the treadmill handles, or touch the
floor, you're coming in contact with germs.
These germs can cause illness if you're
not careful, which is why it's important to
avoid contact as much as possible.
• Never walk barefoot in the gym
• Use your own wraps and supports
• Wipe up any sweat, saliva, or blood after
your workout
• Avoid contact with other people's body
fluids
• Wash your hands
• Shower off after your workout
• Wipe down the machine before and after
using it
Do this, and you'll reduce the risk of getting
sick while at the gym!

Hi, My name is Reshma Agarwal and I am 30 years old. I have
read in a magazine that exercising during pregnancy is good. Is
this true? Then should I start exercising as I am 4 months
pregnant presently. Your advice on this issue would be a great
help. Thank you.
Dear Reshma,
If you are not exercising prior to your pregnancy then do not start
any exercise program while you are pregnant without medical
supervision. You have to understand that many changes takes
place in the body when one goes for tremendous amount of
physical activity in which some might be harmful to your baby
or you. I am not saying that you should not exercise while you
are pregnant but it is very simple, the more fit you are before
pregnancy /you are into exercise before pregnancy then you will
have better chances for a smoother birth and for having a
healthier child. If you feel like being somewhat active during
pregnancy then I can recommend you for some light stationary
biking/cycling with little or no resistance. Make sure cycle have
a back rest and you are seated comfortably. Consult your
physician and an experienced personal trainer or a sports
nutritionist or a coach prior to beginning your exercise program.
As this will help you to be sure that what exercises you are doing,
are they being done with correct positions and postures.
I love eating nuts but recently a friend of mine told me they
very fattening. Since then I have stopped having them but I have
strong urge of nuts. Can you tell me what the truth is and give a
solution to this - Mrs Pathak, 40yrs
Hello Mrs Pathak,
If you love nuts them you should have it. Nuts in general are
very nutritious, providing protein and many essential vitamins,
such as A and E, minerals, such as phosphorous and potassium,
essential fatty acids and fiber. Because nuts are high in fats they
should be eaten in moderation, an addition to a meal or
snack and not a replacement to your main meal. Always try to
have them in the morning if possible. The fat in some nuts is
primarily the heart-friendly monounsaturated and
polyunsaturated types of fat, which are known to prevent heart
disease and lower total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol
while protecting good HDL cholesterol levels. However
they should be eaten in their raw state, NON roasted and NON
salted to gain the most nutritional benefits. Some people have
difficultly digesting nuts and seeds so it can be preferably to soak
them or grind them first. Doing this helps to reduce the phytic
acid and enzyme inhibitors they contain.

So, How Safe Is Your Son?
Undoubtedly, we are 15 years into the 21st century,
more precisely, two months away from beginning the
sixteenth year. Usually it has been said that it makes
no difference what day it is. As in day of celebration.
No date in the calendar can actually make a year's
difference in the real sense. But I disagree to this.
As can be seen in the years gone by, with each day
we are making strides in the realm of what is termed
as 'progress.' From horseback to carriages to cars to
speeding automatic cars. From doves carrying notes
to messengers on feet or postmen to the age of
Internet and E-Commerce. Its all been
progress. And there is one more area in
which we have made huge stride...
humanity deserves an applause for this...
'males are unsafe.'
What am I talking about you must be
wondering. Well, crimes against women do
exist. There is still rape, sexual harassment
on the job, dowry deaths, prostitution, etc.
But women are coming out and fighting
injustice. Look at the number of women
who have wrapped up their bags and
fought their in-laws, each one being an
example for the other. However, I really do
not want to talk about women glorification
here.
Its about the men. Sodomy,
homosexuality, rape, child abuse, male
prostitution, sexual harassment, etc is what is now
plaguing men, actually speaking.
The other day, I was at a restaurant and I
overheard a bunch of parents discus how they feared
sending their little boys anywhere alone. In fact, one
of the parents cited a case of his friends son who was
kidnapped by four men, raped and the child was found
at one of the signals begging.
In another case sited by another member on the
same table, a twelve year old boy was raped by his
best friends mother. He had visited his friend's place as
usual, for tuitions, when the
incident took place. His friend's
mother had called up his place
earlier, informing his parents
that she was taking the bys out
for a movie and because it
would be late at night, he should stay over. This boys
parents naturally agreed, suspecting no foul play.
When he reached his friend's house, he was told that
his friend had gone to his aunt's place for a little while.
The lady made him some milkshake. After that the boy
has no memory of what surpassed through the night.
He just woke up in the morning, bruised and scratched
and in pain. Tests that the family carried out proved
that there had been sexual contact. Rape to put it
directly. The parents of the boy hushed up the matter
and the lady with her son packed up and left the city.
There was a third instance put forth by a paranoid
parent who sends her son everywhere with a servant,
whose duty is that of being a bodyguard. She stated
that she had heard of an incident where a fourteenyear-old boy from her servant's slums was constantly
raped and abused by four goons of the area. Out of
retaliation, he now earns money as a homosexual
prostitute.
There were more such cases discussed on that
table... with only a single sum up before they parted...
'our sons are unsafe!'
TAKE A TRIP TO
TRANSFORM
TRAVEL CHANGES OUTLOOK AND PERSPECTIVE. TAKING A
TRIP NOW AND AGAIN HELPS…
MAN IS ESSENTIALLY A WANDERER:
Man wandered in the past, his curiosity and needs kept
him on the move. These led him to initiate new ventures,
to discover. It broadened his mind, changed his outlook
and tempted him to explore further in his quest for the
best. Can this spirit be reined? And if it is inhibited, it does
lead to a stasis-in mind and body.
Travel widens horizons:
Being still breeds stagnation in both the physical and
Bindu Midha
mental faculties. Think mendicant to think joy.
Unattached they move from place to place to savour the taste of each, grow
wiser and move forward thirsting for more. Our culture is resplendent with
stories of rishi-munis who moved towards mountains, river banks or junglesplace of solace- to return with wisdom and experiences to share. That was then,
when they would internalise the quiet outside to discover ways to live life. In the
modern times, with advanced means of transport, travel transports you in
minimal time, to lands unexplored by you. The sheer joy of moving into the
unknown makes one travel beyond known comforts.
Why does man travel to different lands? Is it just relishing something new or
much beyond?
• It clears a mind block. Remember 'earth is flat and if you travel far you will fall
off the edge' changed when man was ostracised yet travelled only to understand
that earth is a spheroid.
• It helps widen experience and brings in a fresh perspective to life, work and
people.
• Exposed to different cultures, the travelling man realised there is better beyond
his own domain and adopts to create a harmonious blend. Alexander the Great's
bravery bowed to Porus' grit.
• It re-kindles the creative potential in us.
• Travel is inspirational and stirs imagination. Wordsworth travelled, walked to
Nature's lap to re-create enchanting poetry as 'emotions recollected in
tranquillity.
A TREAT TO THE SENSES:
Travel is a sensory delight. It titillates the senses. It enriches the vision with
beautiful sights; eases the fatigue due to staring at computer screens; awakens
the olfactory with the fragrant freshness; rejuvenates the sagging taste buds with
the delightful new flavours; sings a lilting, soothing tune to the ear; awakens
desires with its silky caress. The journey and destination are dually enriching.
TRAVEL HELPS TO CONNECT WITH SELF:
Often we get entangled in our routine. Our skills and talents drown under the
weight of work. It is in the tranquillity of travel that we re-discover our real
selves. The thrill of re-discovery ignites the thrill of living. Strumming the
guitar, composing poems, photography or simply sitting to stare at sunrise and
sunset , wonders of Nature re-kindle the latent passion which re-surfaces when
we travel away from the usual, the routine. It is just that we need to let go of the
reins that tug at us and keep us from travelling.
ENRICHING EXPERIENCING:
Undoubtedly, travel then becomes an experience that makes us a better person
than we were at its start. It helps enervate, rejuvenate, rekindle the spirit of life
and makes rich the diverse experience that one derives from travelling. One
needn't have to travel far or wide, but just away, for that breath of fresh air to
return to the usual with a renewed vigour ,viewing it as the unusual.
So next holiday, travel away from the routine, severe ties with the usual and
come back rich!

WHAT YOU SOW,
YOU REAP...NOTHING
MORE… NOTHING LESS
The Earth is like the dormant servant, which only reaps the fruit of the seed
you have sowed. Have you ever sowed an apple seed and got a mango plant? No.
You only get what you sow. Our subconscious mind is also like that dormant
servant, who only does what it's told to do. Your subconscious mind does not
engage in proving whether your thoughts are good or bad, true or false but only
responds according to the nature of your thoughts or suggestions.
Your thoughts and beliefs are like those seeds, which you are sowing, in your
subconscious mind and then reaping the fruits of those beliefs by getting similar
situations and experiences. Nature has always taught us that everything has to
take a full circle. It is just like this: you take a breath in, you inhale but this is a
half a breath. You also have to exhale. That is the other half, and both breaths –
inhaling and exhaling makes it a circle, a total breath. If you think of only
inhaling and not exhaling, then you will die. Every breath you inhale, there is a
breath you need to exhale which is necessary for life.
Every thought and belief is like that seed. When you create a belief, it's like
inhaling a breath and then the experience is created which is like exhaling that
inhaled breath. This is the full circle of life. When you are sowing positive seeds,
you are getting positive fruits and when you are sowing negative seeds, you are
getting negative fruits. Every negative thought creates negative experience, and
every positive thought creates positive experience.
Your thoughts and beliefs have certain energies and when they are created,
they go in the Universe and experiences are created out of them. When you
believe and keep using words like “its too expensive” or “I cannot afford it” or “ I
cannot do this” then you will be in situations, which will make this true for you.
When you believe “I can afford it” or “I can do this” than every situations will
reflect that for you. When you think thought of judgment and criticism, that's
what you get. When you giving thoughts of hatred, then that's what comes back
to you in the form of experiences and situation that you will hate. When you give
thoughts of guilt then you get pain, when you give out thoughts of forgiveness
and compassion then you get freedom and prosperity and when you give
thoughts of love and acceptance then you get love and acceptance. It's that
simple.
This is not any magic but as I keep repeating that our outer world is a
reflection of our inner world. You are just reaping the fruits of what you believe.
The best thing is that the point of power is always in the present moment. No
matter what you have sown in your past, you can always start fresh today. Let's
come from a place where it's okay to be who you are and make the changes.
What a revolution when we discover that we can make changes in our life
without being a bad person and then change. We could be okay and then change.
Negative thoughts never changes anything. Refuse to think negative and start
thinking positive. Start thinking thoughts of love and acceptance and just
observe the changes which will be amazing.
Sow the seeds of forgiveness, love and acceptance. Reap the fruits and enjoy
life.

Dear Editor
This looks like the trend the BMC
has been following over the years.
Build a hospital or a facility for the
people and not let people use it.
There have been several incidents
like these in past. If the BMC
decides to build a hospital for the
poor they should let them use it.
How can they say give it away
because the number of patients were
less, and call it a dead investment?
Didn't they think before building the
hospital whether they will get
enough patients? This is a very
unprofessional way of working. I
hope the BMC takes the necessary
steps to get the hospital functioning
so that the slum dwellers of Anand
Nagar and around can use this
facility. Thanks to Mumbai

dumping in the lake is not really

THE WAY WOMEN THINK
Husband's Message (by text):
"Darling, I got hit by a car outside the office. Paula brought me to
the hospital. They have been doing tests and taking X-rays. The
blow to my head though very strong, should not have any serious
or lasting effect but, I have three broken ribs, a broken arm, a
compound fracture of the left leg and they may have to amputate
my right foot. Fingers crossed!"

MULUND: The public gardens in Mulund East, which
contribute to an important green patch in the suburb, is
awaiting the maintenance from local authorities . However,
taking the lead in giving a facelift to these gardens is Raj
Kulkarni, Mulund division.
The initiative will see Jeevmala public garden,
developed in 80's and inaugurated then by the late Sena
Chief, to get the facelift. The garden is surrounded by
residential areas, and serves as an important recreational
centre for the citizens. However, the garden amenities
were seen deteriorating and were awaiting maintenance,
by local authorities for long.
The garden has a play area that the swings, slides to
have developed rust, making it dangerous for the children
to use. The green patch in the garden required the
horticulture attention too. The residents worried that anti
social activities would take place, as the lights in the
garden did not work on most of the occasions. The garden
lacked security as well, which raised concern among the
garden visitors.
"During summer, children love to spend time in the
garden. We cannot send our children in garden which lacks
such basic amenities. The civic authorities should pay
attention to these recreational centres as well,"
complained a Mulund resident.
Raj Kulkarni, stating the importance of public garden for
environmental purpose as well as for children, fitness
freaks, adults, and senior citizens said, "I understand that
the public garden is one of the basic recreational needs of
any citizen and they should receive a well-maintained and
managed gardens in their residential areas." He added,
"However, I have taken the initiative and am doing a follow
up with the local authorities and they should now receive
better, clean and green, secured gardens soon across
Mulund East."
The initiative promises to bring in green and clean
gardens with security provisions, fencing walls, better
lights around, safe play area for children.
