DID MODI
TAKE 1000 CR
FROM DAWOOD?
Chhota Shakeel claims; Lalit Modi remains silent
Baljeet Parmar
MUMBAI: Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's trusted aide Chhota Shakeel has
made a sensational revelation that former IPL boss Lalit had taken Rs 1000
crore from the D Company and returned the same recently.
Speaking over phone from an
undisclosed location Shakeel told
a prominent private Hindi news
channel that the D Company did
pressurised Modi for several
years when he refused to return
the huge amount.
“Now he has returned our
money, he is no more under our
scanner. He is free to live and
Chhota Shakeel
Dawood Ibrahim
move wherever he wants,”
Shakeel told the channel.
Surprisingly, Modi, who is always eager to hog the limelight, has not broken
his silence on the matter. Equally surprising is the non-coverage of the
sensational news by the print media while several TV channels screened
heated debates.
It is believed that the amount was borrowed by Modi in 2008 and when he
could not return the same he faced serious threats from the D gang. He
immediately approached the senior officers of the Mumbai police and was
given protection.
Modi, however, was not satisfied by the thin security cover and decided to
flee the country and took shelter in England where he hired an Israeli security
agency for his protection and that of his family. Shakeel's sensational claims
and Modi's stoic silence has left several questions unanswered.
Why would the D Company lend a huge amount to Modi?
Were there more such dealings in the past too?
How could Modi defy the might of D Company for that long?
Why are almost all the political parties silent on the
development?
It was a good handle for the Congress to beat Modi with but
why the party is silent?
Has the D Company been financing big political parties and
now the parties are scared?
Did the intelligence agencies and the Enforcement
Directorate had any whiff of the Modi affair?
The truth can only come out if Lalit Modi comes out with his own version. His
reputation is at stake and he alone can redeem the same.

Drugs on Demand
Frequent cases of viral, cough and cold is
adding to the demand for OTC drugs without
prescription; Physicians ring an alarm
Janhavi Samant
MUMBAI: The rise in Monsoon ailments has raised serious concerns among
doctors on over-the-counter (OTC) sale of drugs in the city. While the Food
and Drugs Administration (FDA) has been strict and restricted OTC sale of
prescription drugs in the past, doctors allege that they are still getting patients
who have managed to buy these drugs without any prescription.
Dr Falguni Parekh, Physician at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital
said, “People tend to pop pills for fever, cough and cold without consulting
doctors. In today's time, fever and cough cold cannot be taken lightly as it can
be a symptom of Swine Flu or Dengue and needs to be thoroughly
investigated.”
Agreeing to Dr Parekh, Dr Mini Khetrapal, the Epidemiology Cell incharge at the BMC said that its special committee appointed to investigate
Swine Flu and Dengue deaths have found that many patients had delayed
taking appropriate treatment. “Swine Flu and Dengue are treatable and not
life threatening, if treated on time. People should avoid self-medication. It
can not only lead to delay in diagnosis of the disease but can have serious
health implications, sometime also leading to death,” said Dr Khetrapal.
In June alone, BMC run hospitals have seen over 4,000 cases of fever. “In
the last four days, BMC hospitals have reported over 1,200 fever cases, 86
Malaria and 32 suspected Dengue cases across the city. We request
Mumbaikars to be cautious while popping pills without consulting doctors,”
added Dr Khetrapal.
Anagha Patil, a Versova resident said," My father-in-law had flu three
weeks back. When I got fever, I initially thought it was flu. On second day
when the fever didn't go, I approached the doctor. Tests showed I had
Dengue." Dr Harshdeep Kamble, FDA Commissioner said that he will look
into the matter and issue circulars to curb the sale of prescription drugs on
OTC basis.
Apart from delay in diagnosis of a disease, having prescription drugs on
OTC basis is one reason behind a serious healthcare crisis across the country.
According to health experts treating gram negative infections- which affects
hospitalized patients mostly- is getting difficult because the category of
bacteria is evolving and becoming ever more immune to existing antibiotics.
This has happened due to people getting antibiotics on OTC basis and nonjudiciously using it without consulting a doctor.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) - the umbrella organisation of doctors,
though support FDA's move, feel that India should have an OTC drug list like
in abroad. “We need to have an OTC drug list that needs to be upgraded at
regular intervals. This is followed abroad. We are still in nascent stage,” said
Dr Anil Suchak, past president and member of IMA.

BANDRA: The Railway protection
Force (RPF) of the Western railway is
in good limelight for the last couple of
months due to their good deeds
towards passengers. On July 2, a
passenger, while alighting from the
train at Borivali, informed motormen
of the train that an unaccompanied/
unattended bag was lying in the
adjacent compartment of the train.
The train was a Borivali bound fast
one, which arrived on platform no.6
at around 5pm.
The alert motormen immediately
informed the on-duty RPF police
constable at the platform. Police
constable Amul Saroj immediately
swung into action and removed the
unattended bag. On inspection, the
bag contained an Audio meter with
accessories worth approximately
Rs.32,000. The bag was taken to the
RPF post. On thorough inspection, a
diary was found in the bag, disclosing
details of its owner (Trushit
Khemchand Solanki, a resident of
Gandhi Nagar, Bandra East).
The RPF team, headed by
Assistant Police Inspector Jai Singh
called on the mentioned number. The
passenger, after admitting to own the
bag, revealed to the RPF official that
he had boarded the Borivali fast local
at Charni Road and alighted at
Andheri station. On alighting the
station, he realised that he forgot his
bag in the train but by then the train
had already left the station. Soon
after, he approached the Station
Manager's office but got no
assistance from them.
The passenger was to lodge an
FIR about missing baggage, but he
received a call from the RPF about
receipt of the bag. After thorough
investigation, the RPF returned his
property to the owner.
Trushit Khemchand Solanki said,
“I was skeptical about getting my bag
back. But surprisingly, I got a call
from the RPF which made me feel out
of the world. I am thankful to RPF
officials who tracked my bag and
returned it to me after all due
verification. I am of the firm opinion
that there still are good policemen in
this world due to which kindness and
truth prevails.”
Illegal stalls under BMC umbrella
Unauthorized Shiv Vada Pav stalls remain untouched by the BMC
during an eviction drive
Mewati Sitaram
MUMBAI: It seems like rules are made for a select a few to
follow, while the rest are free to take undue advantage of
it as per their whims and fancies. The Shiv vada pav stalls
are a classic example. These stalls are not registered
license holders from the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC), despite which they remain untouched
when illegal food joints are removed by the BMC. Other
illegal food stalls like Chinese, South Indian, Bhelwaalas,
Ice Cream walas are targeted by the BMC but the Shiv
vada pav owners have a sarcastic smile on their faces.
The main reason behind non removal of Shiv vada pav
stalls is that the ruling party of Shiv Sena and BJP
pressurize the BMC pressurize civic officials from doing so.
Even civic officials are facing tremendous wrath from
others for not evicting the illegal vada pav stalls, despite
the fact that they are not in possession of a civic license.
One of the officers from hawker removal squad on
says, “We feel ashamed when we remove others stalls,
but are unable to remove Shiv vada pav stalls. We are
helpless when we are instructed by our senior officers not
to touch them.”
Winnie Apoline Saldanha, a social activist says, “Why
are Shiv vada pav stalls permitted to operate even though
they are not registered license holders? At one side the
BMC says no roadside eateries are allowed, then why do
they allow Shiv vada pav stalls? Even I can just put up a
Shiv vada pav stall anywhere! Especially on the footpath if
I have political patronage.”
Devendra Jain P North ward Assistant Municipal
Commissioner said, “The Shiv vada pav stalls are not
licensed and we do take removal drives from time to time
on a regular basis.”

E. Coli bacteria in
Roadside Foodstuff
Mewati Sitaram
MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corporation (BMC) has
started a drive against food selling
hawkers in the city and suburbs. The
main reason is that they are using
contaminated water for cooking
which is harmful for those who
consume these eatables. In the last
one month, around 15000 hawkers
who sell meals near railway stations
have been evicted and around 1500
handcarts which sell foods have also
been confiscated by the BMC.
The BMC administration obtained
water samples from 520 places out of
which water of 91 places was found to
be contaminated which contained E.
Coli bacteria. Mumbaikars are under
the threat of various diseases caused
by E-Coli such as Gastro, Jaundice
and many water borne ones. BMC
Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has
instructed their medical health
officers to strictly deal with this
outcome. He has instructed to check
water contamination at different
places. The BMC health department is
targeting most of the eateries which
are located near or outside railway
stations. Most of the people prefer to
eat outside the station before or after
commencement of their journey.
In the last few days, the BMC has
raided and evicted around 14000
food joints near Churchgate, CST,
Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali,
Kurla, Reay Road, Kurla, Ghatkopar,
Kanjur Marg and Vikhroli railway
stations. Maximum hawkers are
evicted from Churchgate and CST
station areas.
Dr Om Prakash Rohondia, one of
the former Professors from civic run
KEM hospital who is currently
associated with Saudi Arabia health
services spoke exclusively to Mumbai
Messenger. He said, “E. Coli is one of
the commonest causes of
Gastroenteritis which manifests as
simple diarrhea vomiting to rarely
complicated forms of the illness
(L-R) Raju Chopra, Dr Omprakash Rohondia
called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.
Fast foods at stalls serve as essential
'on the go' meals for the busy
Mumbaikars and is also loved by a lot
of foodies and tourists. Fast food stall
owners play a responsible role in
maintaining hygiene throughout the
entire process of acquiring raw
materials, cooking, storing and
delivering foods. As consumers we
have the responsibility of ensuring
that the food we choose to eat has
been prepared and served under
hygienic conditions. The MCGM plays
the most important role of laying
down minimum standards in food
handling and implementing timely
surveys at restaurants and food stalls
to ensure the consumers are safe and
free from all sorts of contaminated
foods.
Dr Om Prakash elaborated, “There
are many types of E. Coli, and most of
them are harmless. But some can
cause bloody diarrhea. Some strains
of E. Coli bacteria (such as a strain
called O157:H7) may also cause
severe anemia or kidney failure,
which can lead to death. Other strains
of E. Coli can cause urinary tract
infections or other infections.”
Rajendra Hastimal Chopra, an
activist says, “People should avoid
eating from road side eateries which
are of course unhygienic. We have to
take care of our own health instead of
depending on others. Water borne
diseases are indeed bad and can
become worse. It is also a
responsibility of civic administration
to take strict measure to curb the
menace in larger public interest.”
HERE ARE A FEW GUIDELINES BY DR. OM PRAKASH ROHONDIA:
What can we do?
1. Make sure before purchasing foods that are cooked and stored at stalls, are
stored in clean vessels/containers and are covered by lids/nets.
2. Make sure food handlers wear proper equipment like gloves, caps and use
utensils to dispense food from the stock.
3. Make sure that the water used is purified using a basic RO purifier atleast/
aquagaurd. ASK for the source of water and avoid places where water is used
from unknown sources.
4. Food that is boiled/ deep fried is safer than food that is uncooked like
salads and chaat.
5. Wash/Sanitize your hands before and after a meal. Contrary to popular
beliefs hand sanitizing is a supplement and not a substitute for hand washing.
6. Avoid stalls close to dumpsters and swarms of flies
7. Report to the nearest MCGM hospital in case of diarrhea, vomiting or
diagnosed gastroenteritis so that the Medical officials can take necessary
actions for the further spread of the disease.
What can MCGM do?
1. Lay down strict minimum standards for food handling and penalize
defaulters.
2. Implement regular surveys to stalls and restaurants to ensure the
minimum standards are being followed.
3. Arrange for regular health checkups for food handlers and prevent
diseased persons from handling food and spreading the infection.
4. The Preventive and Social Medicine Department at the respective MCGM
institution of an area should be informed in case of diagnosed gastroenteritis
cases who are consumers of a particular stall and necessary action must be
taken to limit the disease.
5. As a thumb rule open dumpsters should be closed and garbage collections
should be abolished near food stalls at least to prevent swarming of flies in
those areas.
What can Food Stall owners do?
1. Practice good hygiene, train the staff and maintain standards in the
production chain.
2. Provide sources of safe drinking water and also sites for hand washing.
3. Provide sickness leave to diseased staff members to avoid the spread of
infection.

Pothole Plague Roads
Potholes are causing a rise in Orthopaedic complaints among
commuters this Monsoon
Janhavi Samant
MUMBAI: While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
(BMC) is struggling to mend the potholes that have shown
up on city roads just after the heavy rainfall in June, the
bumpy rides on these roads are causing a rise in the cases
of Orthopaedic problems in the city.
Sunil Pikale, a marketing professional working in
Chakala- Andheri, is one of the several Mumbaikars
affected due to pothole-ridden roads. Pikale, who has a
chronic backache problem, has been under medication
and physiotherapy after the commute on pothole-ridden
roads that have aggravated his back problem.
Orthopaedic doctors and general physicians are
finding a rise in the number of cases of various
Orthopaedic problems like lower backaches, slipped disc
that have been caused or aggravated by the city's
potholes.
Dr Pradeep Bhosale, Head of the Department of
Orthopaedic in Nanavati Hospital, who also practises in
Andheri said, “I am getting 20-30 people on an average
having backaches, spine problem because of jerks they
get while travelling on a potholed road. This has
aggravated back and neck pain among residents
throughout the city."
The bad roads are a serious health concern as lakhs of
people depend on them for their daily commute, say
doctors. According to doctors, on an average a person is
spending Rs 1,000-Rs15,000 per month as medical
expenses due to bad roads. This includes doctor
consultation fees, physiotherapy, medicine etc.
According to doctors, people travelling daily in buses,
taxis and auto rickshaws are badly hit with backache, neck
pain problems due to potholes. “Buses, taxis and autorickshaw drivers do ride roughly over potholes most
times. Bad jerks can aggravate existing back and neck
issues or can lead to mild pains,” said Dr Dilip Nadkarni,
Orthopaedic surgeon at Lilavati hospital.
He said that most cases seen by him in the last few
weeks are related to travelling on pothole ridden roads. “If
not treated on time and the stress on the lumbar and
cervical spine continues, a person can get spondylitis,"
said Dr Nadkarni.
While avoiding travelling on pothole-ridden roads may
be impossible, doctors advise Mumbaikars to avoid
sleeping in a moving vehicle. “Many have the habit of
sleeping in a car. In such cases, the protective muscles
also go to sleep and constant deviation of the neck during
a jerky ride can lead to the person needing major surgery
apart from a minimum month long bed rest,” said Dr
Nadkarni.
Meanwhile, the BMC has introduced a Twitter handle to
help Mumbaikars register their complaint on potholes.
"People can click the photo of the pothole and tag it with
our twitter handle: @potholetracking. Within 48 hours,
we will ensure that the pothole is filled," assures SVR
Srinivas, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC.
People with a history of back problems should avoid travelling in autorickshaws or on the backseat of buses.
Pregnant women who are close to labour should use private vehicles or taxis if the road is too bumpy.
For people using a motorbike, ride slowly and try to swerve around potholes.
Exercise and keep your posture straight. Take adequate rest before and after a bumpy journey.
Pregnant women are also advised caution from potholes by doctors. According to them pregnant women,
especially those in their third trimester should avoid long bumpy rides, especially in autorickshaws, as too many jerks
or bumps while travelling can cause complications.

SINGLE LADY?
NOT WELCOME!
Home owners and housing societies cite several reasons why they are
averse to renting homes to single women
The mindset that 'unless I am vouched for
by a parent, brother or husband, I am
unacceptable as a tenant' is what I feel
needs to change.
ANTARA LAHIRI
Feature Film Editor and
Single Woman Living in Versova
Getting homes on rent for single women is
more difficult, especially in Andheri West,
as landlords are hesitant to rent to
women who are here to try their luck in
the industry.
YOGESH JADHAV
Managing Director, Sahyog Homes
Janhavi Samant
ANDHERI: Ah! The single life, footloose and fancy free! Or so one
would like to believe! But try asking the single women in Andheri
looking for rental accommodation and they will tell you that being
single comes with its own baggage and hassles, the main one
being the unwillingness of home owners to rent their property to
you. Home owners and housing societies cite several reasons why
they are averse to renting homes to single women. Some consider
them to be potential nuisance, they feel that young single people
are all for living the high life and will have parties and boyfriends
over.
Filmmaker Dipika Kalra recounts, “Boys visiting is a no no... one
place had a policy that boys could visit only between 10am and
6pm.” It is also for this reason that while a single woman may just
rent a home, but one from the television or entertainment industry
is treated like a social outcaste. Imagine, the rest of the building
assuming that such a woman will be a bad influence on their
'impressionable' families. Antara Lahiri, feature film editor and
single woman living in Versova shares her experience. She says,
“Societies only want to rent out to families. The preconceived
notion is that 'bachelor' ladki means troublemaker, loose character,
suicidal, alcoholic, junkie, etc. Filmi ladki means all of that plus
jobless. Rent cheques will bounce.”
Many women also have to face issues of character
assassination. It is quite insulting to have people assume that you
are single hence you must be a loose person. Coming home late at
night? What kind of a girl does that? Kalra was actually asked,
“aap log dhanda toh nahi karti?!”
This thinking emerges from the typical parochial and
patriarchal mindset. There are still most people who believe that a
woman should not leave the confines of the family home and if she
does it, it should be only to move into her husband's
home. This is also why home owners don't like to 'do
business' and sign lease agreements with single
women. Some will even insist on a father or other male
relative co-signing the lease deed. In addition, they
feel that women are fickle creatures and would
probably soon be out of a job. Who will pay the rent
then? Lahiri has faced this situation as well, “For a
single woman in her mid- thirties to be asked to bring
her parents to the all-important society interview is
ridiculous. Most societies have asked me to bring my
parents and I have flat refused. The mindset that
"unless I am vouched for by a parent, brother or
husband, I am unacceptable as a tenant" is what I feel needs to
change.”
These problems are worse if you are a meat-eater as well.
Housing societies have taken to creating ghetto like enclaves
meant for only vegetarians. Brokers too take their pound of flesh
for the extra efforts they have to put in sourcing houses for single
women in Andheri. Kalra says, “Rents are higher if you are a
single person as compared to married or living with family. There
is also more harassment from brokers like higher brokerage.'
Comments Yogesh Jadhav, Managing Director, Sahyog Homes,
"Getting homes on rent for single women is more difficult,
especially in Andheri West, as landlords are hesitant to rent to
women who are here to try their luck in the industry. They are
skeptical about struggler women. Although as builders, we have
no issues as to who buys the flat. But once the society has been
formed other members may take objection as to who is allowed to
be a tenant.' While all of this is highly unconstitutional, housing
societies get away with it on the principle of 'majority wins.'
Moreover if a person does rent out his place to a single woman,
Clean Andheri, 'Green' Andheri

residents Vijayaa Shanker and S. Balasubramanian now aim
at building public toilets

the neighbours may not be so accommodating. There are literally
horror stories of single women being harassed by their neighbours
who cut their power and water supply, knock on the door at odd
hours of the night or lecherous men who consider ogling and
passing comments their God given right. According to Lahiri, “It's
ironic that as a single woman I look for a decent society, as much
as societies look for a decent tenant. Non-sleazy neighbours, but
also most importantly, non-interference from the society. A don'tbother-me-i dont-bother-you policy.”
All you single ladies be wise when home hunting and find a
good broker who has a track record of getting you into a society
where you will not be ostracized. Moreover, make sure your rental
agreement is registered and has a minimum six months lock in
period. Above all, don't give the neighbours any reason for
complaint, it is only by example can outdated stereotypes be
broken. As Lahiri avers, at the end of the day, “The city as such is
pretty safe for single women. Not only the suburbs, Andheri in
particular houses lots of filmi people working odd hours, so yes,
there is a sense of safety even when returning home at 2am.” So
all that remains is to find a home to come home to!
Shrutika Sukhi
ANDHERI: Though the cleanliness
campaign Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, has
been kick started by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, very few people actually
pay heed to follow his footsteps. One
person who has initiated such a cleanliness
drive in Andheri is Vijayaa Shanker, a
singer and resident of Indra Darshan. She
is being supported in the cause by another
resident S. Balasubramanian. The duo has
been carrying out the thankless work in the
area since November 2014. The drive that
starts from Oshiwara, culminates at the old
Lokhandwala Bridge.
She initially started the work with her
own funds, after which residents slowly
began contributing for the cause. Since
March, the work is being carried out every
day in the evening. The shopkeepers near
Lokhandwala Bridge pay Rs.10 every day.
Each shop has been asked to maintain their
individual dustbin. Also, food vendors
have been told to keep a bin near their set
ups so that the public can use it to throw
the peels and not litter. Ramesh Patel, a
shopkeeper said, “We have kept a dustbin
outside our shop and we are happy to
contribute for such a good cause.”
There are four sweepers to carry out
cleaning work. Now Vijayaa is requesting
residents to contribute min Rs.100 so that
the workers can be given raincoats.
Vijayaa Shanker is keen doing this work as
she feels that it is her duty to do something
for the society.
S. Balasubramanian said, “I am a
retired army officer. I love my country.
Whenever anyone wants to do something
for the betterment of the society and
country at large, I support them. Indians
have reached the world over, but are bad
when it comes to keeping their own place
clean.”
They informed that the BMC comes
and does their duty in the morning but by
evening the area is dirty again. The BMC
had earlier cleaned the nullah and piled the
garbage on its side. After almost two days
of letting it remain there, Vijayaa was told
that the work for cleaning it has been given
to contractors. Only after consistent
requests, contractors completed the work.
Vijayaa said, “Actors and leaders carry
out cleanliness drives only for a day. It is
not their job. They just pose for
shutterbugs and then forget about it. So,
other people should be employed and
workers should be appointed for such jobs
as they are the ones who would do the
work daily.”
The aim of the duo is to build public
toilets for which they are even trying to
coordinate with the BMC and other
organizations. There are malls and
multiplexes but there is no place to urinate.
Every 1½ km there should be a toilet. Also,
they want to expand the area of good work,
for which they request residents to join
hands with them. Those wanting to
contribute in any manner can get in touch
with Vijayaa on dhwanivijayaa@

KDAH marks 100 successful
LIVER transplants
MM Correspondent
ANDHERI: To mark 100 livers
transplanted in just over two years of
the establishment of its Centre for
Liver Transplant, Kokilaben
Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital
(KDAH) held an event where donors
and patients were felicitated by the
hospital in the presence of leaders of
the community, opinion makers and
members of the media.
Across India, organs to save lives
are in short supply and the paucity of
brain-dead donors exacerbates the
problem. Every year, around
250,000 patients die of liver failure
in India owing to Cirrhosis, and over
25,000 patients need a liver
transplant every year. However, only
1,100 undergo liver transplantation.
Of this, only 5 per cent were
performed in Western India, that too
primarily by visiting surgeons,
because of the lack of a
comprehensive liver transplant
setup. Although several centres
offered liver transplant, the numbers
were few and outcomes poor owing
to the absence of city-based
consultants, and the lack of requisite
infrastructure and experience in
living donor liver transplantation.
As part of its constant endeavour
to bridge the gaps in the Indian
healthcare system, KDAH
established the Centre for Liver
Transplant as a pioneering Centre of
Excellence in March 2013 to
transplant livers both from living
donors and cadavers with dedicated
Liver Transplant Operation Theatres
(OT) and a dedicated Intensive Care
Unit (ICU). The Centre is supported
by a dedicated, full time team that
comprised six transplant surgeons,
six intensivists, four hepatologists,
two infection-control specialists,
four anaesthetics, one interventional
radiologist and 40 specialist
transplant nurses. A first for the city
of Mumbai, and Western India as a
whole, this experienced team,
backed by state-of-the-art
infrastructure, ensures round-theclock monitoring and sustained care
and follow up well beyond the
surgery itself.
Since inception, the Centre has
transplanted 100 livers. While 15
have been cadaveric donor liver
transplants, the others speak to the
success of the Centre's Living Donor
Liver Transplant Programme. This
programme has proved to be a
change agent, right from the first
liver transplant performed at the
hospital on the 27-year-old mother of
a three-month-old baby who had
developed acute liver failure owing
to medicines given to treat
tuberculosis.
The donor: her bother. He was the
first of our living donors who have
displayed their courage and
generosity to help their loved ones –
wife, husband, brother, sister, parent,
grandparent and even distant
relatives. While most donors have
been in-house, some donors from
Kokilaben Hospital have even
donated livers for patients with acute
liver failure in other hospitals in
Mumbai.
“Liver transplants have been
performed successfully in some of
the sickest patients, including
patients on intensive life support on
ventilators. And several paediatric
transplants have been performed

Liquor store near
school Draws flak
School authorities and parents fear vulnerability of students to the
products
Gajendra Goswami
SHASTRI NAGAR: Even though law indicates
exclusion of liquor and tobacco sale within 200
meters of any educational institute, several liquor
and tobacco shops continue violating the legal
fences. School authorities and parents fear
vulnerability of students to the products.
The Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School in
Shastri Nagar, Lokhandwala, is one of the most
prominent schools in the locality. A liquor store lies
within 50 meters of the school compound. The
owner acquires legal permit of selling both beer and
hard liquor. When enquired why the liquor lied in
such close proximity to the school, while it clearly
violates the excise duty laws, the manager of the
shop replied that that the shop had existed even
before the school was built. He stated, “The school
started running in 2008, while this particular liquor shop was
opened way back in 1998, even before the foundation of the
school was laid out.”
However, the School Department barely seems concerned over
the matter. The administration had written a letter citing the
situation, to which they received no reply, after which they did not
care to bother the police officials. The sports co-coordinator of the
school Sudhir said, "The wine shop has been there even before the
school came. We had written a letter to the Oshiwara police station
but I don't know what happened about it. As of now we aren't
facing any problem because of the wine shop."
A parent who did not wish to be named said, “This isn't a
problem as of now, but it could lead to one in the future. It may
lead to bad influence and the place could become a problem for
commuters and everyday passersby once drunkards start showing
up around the place.”
Another resident of the area, Rajesh Bijlani stated, “It is
surprising how the authorities don't seem to be taking any sort of
action on the issue. This could lead to many dangerous things. A
solution ought to be sought.”
Although the legal barriers have been made to keep students
away from substance abuse, they seem hollow in matters like
these. Similar cases have been recorded around Mumbai in the
past when the liquor stores lied within the 100m periphery but
existed before the institution came into existence. Authorities
hardly have a solution for such conundrum yet and their efforts to
resolve such cases seem frivolous, if there are any.

The joys of
rote learning
Shriraj Bhukhanwala
All of us as students have done this. I know I have
committing long paragraphs to memory over weeks
and months. It is an ancient talent, which has all but
disappeared from our lives and many of our class
rooms. In the name of infusing the class room with
creativity and fun, we have turned our backs against
all forms of learning by heart.
My favorite subject in school was History and I
loved remembering the names of all the Mughal and
Maratha kings and the conflict between them and to
this day it remains my preferred reading material of
choice, the only difference being I have moved on to
world history.
The only problem is that my capacity for recall
has weakened considerably and my attention span
has reduced and I am unable to let the words do their
magic over and over again. An ability to recall is one
of those things one can flash to the world, throw out
as a challenge to your colleague or offer as a support
to your friend.
Rote learning not only makes us remember the
Shriraj Bhukhanwala
multiplication tables or make us win spelling bee
contests, it also sharpens our capacity for remembering. I urge every student burdened with the
load of education to partake this delicious feast of rote learning.

Awareness Meet at Gyan Kendra School

Getting an education is an important part of
success in today's world. It's competitive out
there, and the more educated you are, the
better your chances of landing a good job are.
That's why getting a Masters of Business
Administration (MBA) is so important.
There are only a select few in the world who
can drop out of school and go on to make a
significant contribution to the world. For the rest
of us, education is the key. Take a look at three
real reasons why an MBA degree is important,
especially in the business world.
• Increase your hiring opportunities:
Generally, the more education you have, the
better your career opportunities and choices
are. A MBA graduate is an extremely valuable
asset to an organization. Because of the
competition in today's business world, you may
actually find that you need a MBA degree to
even have a first interview. In school, MBA
students learn different techniques and skills
that can help businesses. Some companies plan
to hire MBA students, maybe even paying for
current employees to go back to school and get
a MBA. You know that if a company is willing to
pay for employees to get the degree, it's
certainly an asset.
• Get paid more: With a MBA degree in hand,
you can actually demand a higher salary.
Corporate Recruiters Survey, employers are
willing to pay significantly more for job
candidates with an MBA degree. The survey
suggests that companies will pay up to 84
percent more. It is hard work to earn a MBA
degree and your salary certainly should reflect
that.
• Build your network: One of the really
valuable parts of getting a MBA degree is the
networking opportunities. When you are
studying for a MBA, you are with people from all
Roshan Mansukhani of Roshan's Academy of DJs holds interactive session, coaxing
students to make their life systematic through music
PHOTO/SM KABEER
MM Correspondent
FOUR BUNGALOWS: On July 4, an Awareness meet was held at
Gyan Kendra School, Four Bungalows, by Roshan Mansukhani of
Roshans Academy of DJs, which was attended by more than 80
students of Std 12. The session was a huge success, which was very
interactive, with the prime focus being Music as a Stress Buster or
Motivating module. Academically too, the perception shown and
spoken about went very well with the students. The topics of
discussion included the teenage addiction to the Internet Culture and
Technology, which is important, but is being used by all youth as the
only life support.
Roshan Mansukhani says, “Academic stress too can easily be
tackled if music becomes your hobby because we at Roshan's
Academy of DJ's not only teach and inculcate this inbuilt hobby, but
with our Nine Commandments, train individuals to use them daily
which helps them in time management and studies. Music as a
hobby is something that a human heart (any age) can relate to; in fact
depend on when you are in any mood and have no one to hear you
out. We cleared the Myth of DJing, which many have as Djing is not
only an art but also a morale booster. In simple words 'When you can
make hundreds of people dance on your finger tips, imagine what
can't you do in life.' There was a time kids hid 10 percent from
parents. Now has come a time where they hide 40 per cent from
parents. Why? Thanks to the Internet as their life support. That's
where the friction comes into the family. That's one of the reasons
the youth are getting depressed and looking out for a way to vent out
their anger. Thus, some also fall prey to drugs.”
“On the other hand, music helps an individual to compose
himself and think positively. The challenges that you go through
with music and the high you get playing the console and having the
crowd grooving to your tunes is such a positive one that you don't
need chemicals to get a high (which is only temporary) and gets
painful when you get back to reality. Intake of any external
substance/chemical has always damaged but music gives you
confidence with stays with you permanently. You don't need to be
consuming drugs to join our academy, instead join with us and
Roshan Mansukhani addressing a gathering of around 80 students at
the school.
together we help one another to refrain from such elements,” explained
Mansukhani to an anxious gathering of students.
He adds, “Taking a pledge from the students to refrain from Drugs on the
whole was an amazing feel as the confidence within a 2 hour session was
evident that they just need a friend to talk to and that's what we do. I talk to
them as a friend and not as a teacher so the exchange of views and concerns
are smoother.”
The most important point made at the gathering was that music has no
age, religion, gender bias or caste. Mansukhani concluded, “Music is just
pure You. Even our speech is music. And every human is a musician. We help
you channelize this talent that is inbuilt in the positive way of life with our
Nine commandments. We train you to have music as a passion, but always
remind you that don't let your passion become your obsession.”

Anand Neelakantan Back With Rise Of Kali
MM Correspondent
MUMBAI: From the retelling of the
exploits of the Asura King, Ravana, to the
pivotal twists and turns in Roll Of The
Dice (Ajaya Book I), leading to the
Mahabharata war, the connoisseur of
words and master of cliff hangers,
bestselling author, Anand Neelakantan, is
back with another mythological pageturner, 'Rise of Kali – Duryodhana's
Mahabharata (Ajaya Book II).'
An exciting characteristic of Anand's
novels is his in-depth recreation of
characters involved in the epic; he gets
Anand Neelakantan
beneath the skin of each, taking an
impartial view of the circumstances, with telling insights and colourful imagery.
He says, “The overwhelming response to my first two novels has given me the
internal momentum to explore these stories in detail and capture the mindset of
each character's decision, leading to the fateful final battle. I am positive this
book will not only be an enjoyable read but an emotionally consuming journey
filled with vivid mental imagery of the epic.”
In the events leading to the great battle, the forces of Dharma which the
Kaurava's staunchily believe is
dispelled by the roll of Shakuni's
dice. Draupadi is humiliated before
the entire sabha as well as her
helpless, enslaved husbands. The
Pandavas are exiled to the forest by
royal decree. Suyodhana, crown
prince of Hastinapur increases his
fighting strength by bringing Eklavya
to his side, offering him the kingship
of his forest lands. But Krishna,
intent on Yudhishtir receiving his
share of the Hastinapur legacy,
arrives to act as the Pandava's
mediator. The Kauravas refuse
Krishna's proposal. Duryodhana,
dismisses the proposal to hand over
Indraprastha to Yudhishtir even as
Lord Krishna warns them about their
doomed future.
From the fear of war to the war
on fear, both sides know that beyond
the agony and carnage, the winner
will takes all. But even as the gods
conspire and men's destinies unfold,
a far greater truth awaits.
WHAT THE CARDS FORETELL FOR
Shahid Kapoor
Shahid Kapoor, a talented actor and the chocolate boy of the
industry is the most hardworking and dedicated actor who has
proved his mettle through his choice of varied roles and his
capability to outdo himself every time.
He is not just a fabulous actor but also a great human being.
He is devoted in taking care of his responsibilities and is a little
traditional when it concerns his loved ones. He becomes a little
protective out of care about his family. He has entered a new
phase of life and no doubt it is a joyous moment for everyone in
his life. But due to prior commitments, he won't be able to enjoy
this change reasonably very much. Family would crave to spend
some time together and that is precisely what cards advice. He
should spend some quality time with his wife for their bond to
grow.
According to cards,Shahid is a hot tempered person who
doesn't get angry easily and is quite patient but if he reaches his
saturation level he would be really fuming which won't be good
for him. He is suggested to be more calm and patient ahead.
Shahid will face certain criticism by people who he should ignore
for his best interests as he would be criticised for both good and
bad. Work wise everything is good right now but will get much
better later on.
Year 2015 to mid-year 2016 will be good for him on all fronts
as luck and time will support him but he is advised to follow his instincts. Shahid needs to take care as someone around
him can deceit him. He will have disputes within his family or someone outside. Cards suggests him to verify thoroughly
before signing any contracts or legal papers as any negligence can cause him problems. He needs to take necessary care
and precautions regarding his health but not worry much as he will recover from poor health.
Shahid is a mature person who has learnt a lot in his life at a tender age. He has experienced rise and fall many a times
but has continued with his perseverance and zest for life and should continue to do so to win over any resistance.
Investments during the months May - September of Year 2016 is not beneficial for him and if he is planning to buy or
invest in property or a new house then the most favourable period is post mid – 2016. Years 2015 to 2016 will be a roller
coaster ride for him though months November and December of year 2016 will be good. Cards suggest him to be patient
and calm and enjoy the new phase of his life. God bless him with a blissful married life.

Rajan also took questions from an enthusiastic audience
and explained the nuances of penning this fascinating love
story and that he strongly believed that love was the most
powerful emotion in the Universe.
The evening took a very interesting turn when Milind R.
Agarwal, Founder, Market Tunes compared the characters
in the book to 7 principal emotions of life as stated in the

how he had a strong gut feeling that the character 'Prerna'

Viveck Shettyy, writer, voracious reader and All India

quotient with his observation that “Intelligence is not about
knowledge but about Imagination”. He added that
“Imagination is one of the greatest qualities that a writer
should be blessed with and Rajan Narayan is truly blessed”.
He concluded by expressing his fear that love for reading
has become a serious casualty in the 2 minute 'Maggie

Alvin Saldhana, Founder Brandarms Consulting and
Soumik Sen, Bollywood Director of “Gulab Gang” fame read
a few chapters of the book with great enthusiasm and
passion amidst the thunderous applause of the audience.
Mamta Raja made quite a few heads turn with her drop

He was also a very important part of Salman Khan's Jai Ho and his
work was highly appreciated in the movie. It is also been said that he

Mohit

Actress Meenakshi Dixit, after receiving a lot of great reviews for her film P Se
PM Tak has been keeping pretty busy. The actress has been shuttling between
two cities down South and Mumbai juggling projects and she couldn't have asked
for more. The girl is already a very popular actress down South and her
acceptance by the Bollywood industry has just given her a high she could never
have imagined.
The actress will be making an announcement soon on her new project for
now she is busy listening to narrations and deciding which one to sign on.
Govinda in Kailash Kher
Birthday Party
Mohit Malik, who played an abusive husband in TV show 'Doli Armaanon Ki,' had suffered sleepless nights
portraying his character. Having now wound up the show, the actor is all set to contest in the popular show 'Jhalak
Dikhla Ja.' Here is Mohit Malik in his candid chat with SHAILI MADAN, where he speaks about his life and
television...
Your current projects...
Currently I just wound up with Doli Aramno Ki. Now I
am starting to shoot for Jhalak Dikhla Jaa so yes it's going
to be a busy time.
Your experience in television till date...
It's the reason am here and I cannot thank it enough. It's
not just my bread and butter but also where I met my life
partner and most importantly it's a medium I worship.
Your views on the negative role that you play in
Doli Armano Ki...
It's been pretty challenging and I have learnt a lot.
Most importantly even though a negative lead, I've got a
lot of love from my fans and that's what matters the most.
A role you want to do on screen...
There are way too many for me to even start naming.
The negative role you play had an impact on your
health when you started the show...how have you
coped up with it now...
Yes I did undergo consultation with doctors because it
did to start showing up on my mood and health. It wasn't
an easy phase but again we are actors and these things are
bound to happen. All's well that ends well.
You've bagged awards for your performance in
negative role...your views...
I feel blessed. Its not easy to get so much love playing a
negative lead but I managed to do so and I can only
consider myself lucky and blessed. I have worked hard for
it as well.
Mumbai Sufi maestro Kailash Kher's birthday was a complete family affair this

Divjikar,Pakul Chaturvedi,Kailash Kher 's twin sister in law Maegha and Sneha etc
Kailash and other singers sang various songs and Poet Farhat Shahzad shyaari
made the environment melodious one.
You think you might get stereotyped as an actor
playing the antagonist?
Not really. Every character has something different to
offer and it's what you individually put into the character.
So I doubt one gets stereotyped.
You are also a contender in Jahlak Dhikhla Ja...
how did this happen...
I cannot divulge much but yes I am in the show and
that's important. I love to dance and it's amazing to be on a
show you feel so strongly about. I cannot wait to begin
shoot.
Something that you look forward to, through the
show Jhalak Dikhla Ja...
A great experience good friends. Lots of pushing
myself and yes, I hope to win.
Television versus films...
Both. Cannot choose. Films are definitely my next step
but TV will always remain close to me for life.
Your views on marriage...and how it has changed
you...
Go for it if you feel you've found the right; the one you
can spend your entire life with. I am blessed to have Additi
in my life. She is everything to me and I couldn't have
asked for anyone else besides her.
The best thing that's happened to you till date...
Jhalakh Dikhla Ja for now.
One thing you cannot skip doing in a day...
Working out.
Your fitness mantra...
I work out a lot. I would tell everyone that it's
important to give time to your body. Even if its 20 minutes
a day, please do so. Eat healthy, gorge on fatty food at
times but not over the limit.
Your hobbies...
Acting, dancing and travelling.
Your inspiration...
MY family and wife.
Your role model...
None really.
Your philosophy of life...
Live and let live.

Think before getting
a dog home
Shriraj Bhukhanwala
All of us at some point in our lives
have entertained the idea of getting a
pet home. It could be a dog or a cat to
fish or birds and now even more
exotic forms like guinea pigs and
hamsters. While they enrich our lives
infinitely, we have to realize they are
living breathing creatures who have
feelings and not playthings meant to
have fun with temporarily and then
discard.
Every few days, I get calls from
friends and relatives telling me they
want to gift a dog or a cat to their son
or daughter for their birthday. While
it is a great idea to get a pet for a
young child and studies have proven
that kids are more adjustable and
more social with a pet around, it is a
full time responsibility and
something you should be prepared to
live with for the next 12- 15 years.
Pets are like babies who refuse to
grow up and are dependent on you
for every need of theirs. Before
getting a dog home, here are certain
things you need to consider:
• Is your home big enough – Most
of us like getting big dogs , gives a
sense of machismo, but what we
don't realize is that bigger dogs need
a lot more stimulation and exercise ,
and with the busy lives we lead, it
eventually leads to the dog getting
frustrated and destructive. Most
owners are not able to cope up with
this and neglect the dog or worse,
give them up for adoption. In cities
like Mumbai, it is better to get the
small to medium size breeds like
pugs, beagles, cocker spaniels etc.
• Do you have enough time –
Most of us are rushing from one
place to other, with barely enough
time to ourselves. Getting a pet is a
huge responsibility and they need a
lot of time and attention, otherwise
they tend to become depressed .
They need to be walked on time, fed
on time and more importantly need
oodles of your love and affection. It
is advisable to get a dog home when
you can devote a good portion of
your day to him.
• Is the whole family ready for a
pet – A lot of us in Mumbai live in
joint families and there is a
possibility that one or two members
of the family might not be as
enthusiastic about the prospect of
owning a dog as you. This leads to
the dog being chained up for hours or
not being allowed in certain parts of
the house, which leads to
disorientation and confusion as dogs
are highly sociable and constantly
crave human affection. Please make
sure that the entire family is on board
before getting the little bundle of joy
home.
• Are you willing to bear the
expenses – Dogs get many of the
same ailments that humans do,
ranging from the common cold to
Cancer. As they grow older they are
also prone to diseases like arthritis
and hip dysplasia which leads to
restrictive movements. The visits to
PREVENT FUNGUS ON CLOTHES
1. While cleaning your cupboard, remove clothes tucked
away in corners and air-dry them for a while. This will get
rid of any moisture that seeps between them.
2. Do not keep damp or mildly damp clothes in the
wardrobe. This will not only make your cupboard smell but
also affect other outfits.
3. If possible, install a low-voltage bulb inside your
cupboard. It helps generate mild heat which keeps the
bacteria at the bay.
4. Keep silica gel packets in your wardrobe. They suck in
all the moisture and keep the clothes dry. You can find these
packets at your local chemist.
5. Put camphor balls in your cupboard to keep away
moisture, fungus and insects in your cupboard.
6. You can also use natural items like neem leaves or
cloves to protect your clothes from falling prey to fungus.
CURE FUNGUS ON CLOTHES
If the fungus has already started ruining your clothes,
here are ways to save your favourite outfits.
7. Bleach: Hand wash your clothes with your usual
detergent and clean water. Add a bit of diluted bleach and
rinse for a minute. This should solve the problem. However,
the vets can be expensive and range
from a few thousand to a few lakh
rupees. Increasingly we are seeing
older dogs being abandoned or put to
sleep as owners don't want to spend
such huge sums of money. Please get
a dog home only if you are willing to
invest in his health and well being for
the rest of his life.
Dogs are wonderful creatures. If
you take the time make sure you
choose a dog that is right for you and
your lifestyle, they will change your
life for the better. We get them when
they are so young and full of life and
say good-bye to them when they are
old and their time is up. They are like
flowers that bloom, flower, begin to
wilt and eventually pass on right
before our eyes. We can choose to be
sad and cry that it is unfair, or we can
choose to see that the beauty of their
life and their love for us lies in the
fact that it is all so preciously
temporary. So enjoy them and be the
person you decided you wanted to be
when you brought them home.
Having a pet is never a convenient
thing but name one time that true
love ever was.
Work on your Addiction
Anjali Nagpal is a life coach and workshop facilitator certified to present Heal Your
Life transformational workshop worldwide approved by Hay House, US. She also
conducts workshops relating to Law of Attraction and self healing. She is also a
therapist for different modules (hypno, metaphor). She is an Angel card reader.
I want to feel better now
Smoking cigarettes reduces my
stress
I can't stop eating
Drinking makes me popular
I need perfection
I can't stop buying things
I can't get away from abusive
relationship
Do you remember this statement
and do they sound alike? What is
addiction? Addiction is heavy
dependence upon anything outside of
oneself. We can be addicted to drugs,
alcohol, sex and tobacco; and we can
also be addicted to blaming people or
judging people, to illness, to debt, to
being a victim, or to being rejected.
Being addicted is giving up your
power to something outside of you
and that can be anything, a substance
or a habit. Addictive behavior is
another way of saying “I am not good
enough or worthy.” When we are
involved in such behavior, we are
trying to run away from ourselves. We
keep ourselves busy doing something
so we can't see or feel what we are
feeling. We are avoiding to be in
touch with our own feelings.
Something we say, do or believe is so
painful for us that we avoid looking at
it and to avoid it, we get into addiction
so we overeat, drink, act out
compulsive sexual behavior, take pills,
spend money that we don't have, and
create an abusive love relationship.
Most people who are into addiction
have deep self -hatred. These are the
people who are very hard on
themselves. It very difficult for them
to forgive themselves and they take a
lot of time to release the past and
forgive themselves. They keep
punishing themselves day after day
because somewhere down the line,
might be in their childhood, they got
the idea that they aren't good
enough; they are bad and need
punishment.
Early childhood experience that
weren't pleasant and involves
physical, emotional or sexual abuse
contributes to that self-hatred.
Understanding what they hate about
themselves is only hating the
thoughts they are holding for
themselves, this understanding would
help to turn the self hatred into selflove. Being true to one self, self love,
self-forgiveness helps to heal these
childhood wounds and allows the
addictive person relief from their
behavior. Addictive people are likely to
be very fearful, and they have a great
fear of letting go and trust the process
of life. To release this addictive
behavior we need to let go of the
ideas and belief that don't nurture and
support us.
With addictive behavior, we try to
fix what we think as wrong inside of us
while grabbing something outside of
us. To release this we need to start
getting in touch with our own feeling,
choose to be in the present moment
and be assertive. You can also keep
affirming, “I am willing to release the
need for _____ in my life. I release
and it now and trust in the process of
life to meet my needs.”
some bleach products are too strong and can discolour
clothes, so it's best to simply rinse instead of soaking.
Always try the diluted bleach on other clothes before
washing expensive items.
8. Vinegar: Vinegar is an excellent disinfectant for
clothes. Add a bit of vinegar while washing your clothes in
the machine and you should get rid of all the smell and
fungus. You can also soak your clothes in vinegar by adding
a cup of diluted vinegar to a bucket of water with clothes.
Get rid of
computer blues
Shaili Madan
Innumerable people across the city are falling prey to maladies of the
Information Age, injuries that plague technology workers who typically spend
hours, hunched over their computers. Unfortunately so, not only this bracket but
even children who use computers for art work, doing their homework and surfing
the net are falling prey to these ailments. Here are a few tips that could take away
those computer blues:
According to Dr. Mallik, “Improper use of the keyboard and mouse can cause
ailments generally referred to as repetitive stress injuries (RSI), repetitive motion
injuries or repetitive strain injuries – involving the wrists, arms, neck, back or
shoulders. Symptoms of computer related repetitive-motion injury can be mild,
such as stiffness and minor pain, sometimes your symptoms may not occur until
several hours or even days after the activity which causes them.”
Proper typing is one of the best ways to prevent RSI. The most common
mistake people make is to comfort their hands to perform key combinations,
such as a shifted letter. You should hit one hand to hit the letter key, and the index
finger of the opposite hand to hit the Shift, Ctrl or Alt key. Twisting your hand puts
strain on them. Resting on a wrist rest, the table or arm rests while typing forces
you to twist your hand to reach some keys. Instead, it is better to keep your
hands moving freely above the keyboard, letting the strong muscles of your arms
move your hands. Rest your wrist on a wrist rest only when you are NOT typing.
Wrist rests are designed to support the heel of your hand, not for resting your
wrists. Place wrist rests so that the tip is in level with the top of your keyboard's
space bar. Make sure you sit centred over the part of the keyboard you use the
most. Do not sit centred over the number pad if you never use it. Stretching your
arm to reach out to the mouse can cause 'mouse shoulder' and 'mouse arm.' The
mouse should be placed near the keyboard so that it is easy to use without
stretching the arm too far away from the body.
Looking at the monitor for extended periods can cause eyestrain. This means
different things to different people, which could either be like burning, tightness,
sharp pains, dull pains, watering, blurring and other sensations. Keep the
monitor away as far as you can read comfortably. The monitor height should be
at about eye height. This is fine for some people, wrong for many. The current
recommendation is that eye height is the highest a monitor should be, not the
best height. Many people find a low monitor to be more comfortable for the eyes
and neck. Proper lighting for your work area is important. While you want to be
sure you can see your work, you also want to avoid looking directly at a light
source or having glare reflected off your screen. Lighting should be indirect and
even. Don't aim a light at your reference documents, and be sure you're not
facing either a light or a window. The brightness and contrast control of the
monitor should be set properly for comfortable viewing. Turn the brightness to
minimum, and then set the contrast to a level comfortable for your viewing.

Compiled by MEWATI SITARAM,
Senior Journalist and hospitality columnist
How did the journey start for you?
You work an incredible amount of time as a chef. The art and science of creating
recipes is inborn. Since his grandfather was a hardcore non-vegetarian and a great
food critic, it was quite challenging for his grandmother and mother to meet his
culinary expectations. As a child, Ganesh witnessed hundreds of parties hosted by
his grandfather and catered by these two ladies at his place with their culinary
delicacies. This was the main source of inspiration, which developed his curiosity to
enter the culinary world. This was a turning point in his life and in early childhood,
he felt his passion about cooking and never looked back.
Educational highlights
Chef Ganesh completed his schooling from a small town called Daund near
Pune. Thereafter, in spite of getting admission in medical college, he opted for Hotel
Management which was very well supported by his family. Chef Ganesh is the first
person from the entire family to venture into the world of hospitality. He completed
his Diploma in Hotel Management from the Institute of Hotel Management
Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Pune.
Career graph
During the final year of Catering,
he got selected in the campus
interview and joined 'The Sky Chef,
Ambassador's Flight Kitchen' as
Kitchen Management Trainee. It was
a long journey of 25 years in the Hotel
industry. He was associated with
different hotels and rose- the ranks by
creativity, passion for food and love
for the industry. Few significant
speciality restaurants planned and
executed by him are Upstairs at the
Chak the British Live BBQ at the Best
Western Hotel, Bahrain. Amigos the
Maxican and Sea Shells the Beach
Shack at Majorda Beach Resorts,
Goa. Gun Smoke the Western,
Alampanah the Nizami, Chanakya
the traditional Andhra cuisine at
Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Café Ole the Sports Bar and Biscotti the Italian at
Crossroads, Mumbai. Namak the traditional Indian restaurants include Mabruk the
Mediterranean, Lagoon the Pan Asian, Manuhaar the traditional Marwadi at Aamby
Valley City.
His dream cuisine
The Indian cuisine is slowly and steadily rising to reach the apex globally. India
is very rich in availability of spices and condiments, correct use of these spices and
cooking methods can create wonders in the cook's pot. In spite of having diversified
culinary exposure to Western, Oriental, Continental and Mediterranean cuisines, his
heart has always been craving for promoting Indian cuisine. Our cuisine is very vast
and has an influence of local culture, ingredients and cooking methods in every
region.
What is a difference between a cook and a chef?
Why do some restaurants have good food and others don't? I don't think that
comes from working in kitchens. You don't learn how to make an innovative,
creative, game-changing dish by working on the line. That's entirely internal. You
learn to execute it on the line. There are cooks and there are chefs. The best cooks
I've ever seen just execute and do it perfectly without thinking anything about it.
They are like machines. Every chef's dream is to have cooks that are machines. But a
machine can't create a dish that's emotional, that resonates with people.
How is Ambay Valley different
Aamby Valley City is a dream project of Sahara India Parivar. The Culinary
Operations here are spread over acres of land right from receiving raw materials,
preparation of food, transportation of food and service. Our logistics need to be very
well planned for running the operations smoothly. Since the operation is spread,
there are different barriers of communication which we need to overcome. Every
single day is different and exciting. It's very important to love and enjoy your
profession or else at one stage it starts feeling monotonous. Guests of different
profiles visit Ambay valley but exceeding the expectations of our repeated clients
(citizens of Aamby Valley) on a daily basis is a challenge that we fulfil quite
effectively. The success of my team reflects my success as a leader.
How do you keep yourself updated with latest trends?
Aamby Valley is one of the out of the World venues in India. The need of the hour
is to showcase latest and outclass events which are meant for selected few of the
entire world. As the property is located away from the hustle bustle of city life, apart
from culinary magazines and the web world being a member of IFCA and WIFCA
helps me to keep myself updated with the industry and all the people associated with
it. This industry has really vowed people all over the globe with its creativity, flair
and ability to bring people together.
Message for aspiring chef
If anyone wants to enter the culinary world, he should leave behind all his social
activities and commitments. The hospitality trade needs you during all important
days and festivals, if you are prepared for it then there is no looking back. My advice
to all the aspiring future generations of the industry would be to always be on the
path of 3 P's (Passion / Positivity / Patience). I don't remember when I was with my
family for any festive celebration and as of now they are well versed with priorities.
Ultimate goal
My profession and my Industry has given me a lot and now is the time to give
something back to my industry which I have acquired in the span of 25 years. I have
a dream of penning down my recipes which I have created over a period of time.
And may be a few years down the line, I would like to convert my experience into an
Entrepreneurship…

Hema Malini and our dark side
Shaili Madan, Resident Editor
Fate and destiny act if you don't take things in your own hands. The truth is a little life is lost forever!
The news last week was plastered
with headlines and tip-line banners
about how Hema Malini met with an
accident and had right after been
rushed to a Fortis Hospital in Jaipur.
She was discharged from the hospital
on Saturday after her over speeding
Mercedes crashed into a Maruti Alto
in Jaipur, killing one child, and
injuring four others.
The actor was apparently ferried
to the hospital safely by a doctor who
was passing by, leaving victims in
the other car, absolutely helpless and
stuck. Had the little girl, Chinni, been
taken to the same private hospital
where Hema Malini was taken, she
could have been saved. This has been
the lowest point in the case, wherein
the doctor and Hema Malini, did not
pay heed to other victims who
suffered in the same car crash,
especially the child. All five people
in Chinni's car were bleeding after
the accident for 20-25 minutes on the
road before help came.
For two days, the entire nation
was only talking about Hema
Malini's unfortunate accident and
sympathising with her. Nothing
wrong in that. But that's only lesser
of the two unfortunate stories. Only
much later, the news of the really
unfortunate loss came out in media
and people started expressing their
sympathy towards the child who lost
her life.
Another point being – isn't this
case in limelight only because it most
obviously involves the presence of a
celebrity? No two ways to that.
Living in times where most people
are absolutely awe struck by
Bollywood and its surroundings,
little do we pay heed to anything else.
Thousands of people die in road
Grow Roots: Stay Strong
Strongly entrenched stands the banyan tree, emanating
an aura of majesty and grandeur which seemed to belong
to an era gone past. Times had changed for the enigmatic
woody plant, but it remained firmly established reminding
the secret admirers of the roots that they could too firmly
entrench. The roots were deeply seated in the soil
forming a strong union with it that was unshakeable,
unmoveable. Thus each had remained with each other, by
each other through the years of tears and joy, progress
and turmoil, not changing much, rather growing more
Bindu Midha
roots! The internal, the underground roots had surfaced
to make visible the determination to hold on, to remain steady and well settled in
spite of the difficulties of storm and squall, worm and parasite. Nothing could
deflect this gigantic, perennial, woody entity from being one with the ground it
stood on.
The colossal tree made me reflect on the relationships I share with the others
around me- my immediate family, my close friends, my acquaintances, my
colleagues, and someone I cannot leave out- my pet. Was each bond frivolous or
firm? Was it deep-seated or shallow? Could one of them be unsettled by a sudden
strong wave of turbulence?
accidents every day. The only thing
making this case so 'special' is the
celebrity involved. Would we have
actually cared if it was somebody
else's car? It's because it's the famous
MP, people are asking same
treatment for the others but instead of
Hema Malini, it could have been
some other rich person and whom
nobody would have bothered! The
blame in its entirety lies with the
general public who would have been
gawking and taking pictures at the
accident scene as it so happens every
day in India. We all live and suffer it
every other day. How many such
accidents have happen repeatedly,
and still the story is the same, except
when celebrities are involved and
media turns it into a circus!
Also, when accidents happen, no
one comes out to help victims by
taking them to hospitals is because
they fear
g e t t i n g
embroiled in
legal issues
that run years.
Being treated
as culprit is another reason why
people don't help. This apathy, even
from lawmakers, is saddening but it
gets repeated every now and then
somewhere or the other in India.
As for this particular case, we, for
some reason, are overly servile to
celebrities or people in power. We go
to any extent to put them on a high
pedestal, which often is reasonable,
undeserving and unfair. Every time I
read about such incidents, I am
angered and ashamed.
Last but not the least I must say
that fate and destiny act if you don't
take things in your own hands
(wearing seat belts). The truth is a
little life is lost forever!
Are all our ties sturdy enough to weather any storm, or do they turn feeble like
weak links and could go topsy turvy at slightest gust that tries to have a go at
them? Could a misunderstanding, an unkind word or a harsh statement unsettle
years of togetherness and cordiality? Were the links robust enough to offer
resistance and emerge a victor, turning a sturdy face to the stormy deflections?
I reflected, pondered as these thoughts took shape making me realise I
needed to work at each link. Clarity dawned! Indeed firmness had to be built,
roots needed to go deeper as a gust could unsettle, topple the tender
relationships that mark our life and facilitate our journey through this world.
Why? We can't really sail alone, by ourselves can we? To make the journey
exciting & enthusing, compatible companionship is indispensable, togetherness
is needed. It's the stimulus, the motivation, the driving force that makes us move
onwards in a state of bliss, making our crossing meaningful and productive.
What an important lesson to learn during a chance visit to the Gateway of
India on an idle day when an unexpected holiday gave me respite from a hectic
work day! The banyan tree approved of the rain, bathing its dust laden leaves,
allowed the wind to whistle & swing on its outward roots as they danced to the
rhythm, twirling and swinging. But was it deterred by the pace? No! Why? It had
the soil for partnership. The two together held on, withstood the vagaries of the
weather and in fact fell in tune with it. The tree was held in place by its roots.
Easily uprooted, the squall that life brings does shake our belief in our
relationships and we question them, put them to test and create bitterness for
ourselves. All we need to do is like the good old banyan tree- stay untiring, stay
unwavering and most importantly NURTURE ROOTS!
Mindfulness can relieve you from STRESS
Mind is like a monkey, keeps jumping between past and future or the
fantasy channel. Alan Cohen says, “Imagine two lawyers in a courtroom inside
your head. One is arguing for your possibilities and you achieving your goals.
The other is arguing for your limits and why you don't deserve what you want.
Who will win? The lawyer whom you pay the most. The way you pay these
lawyers, however, is not with money; it is with your attention.”
Where your attention goes, your mind and energy flows there. Your mind
plays a major role in holding your current attention. But your mind is always
on an excursion mode. Mind keeps travelling between your past and future or
to the fantasy world. Hence, your attention keeps wandering. Let's test it
now...Ask yourself what were you thinking few minutes before - I am for sure
your mind was thinking about any one issue/situation in any one of the three
realms (past, future or fantasy). It's like riding your bicycle. By continuous
microscopic adjustment of the cycle bar to the left or right, we travel straight in
a cycle. Your mind will keep jumping, but it is your responsibility to tie to the
present moment awareness. You want more success & money in your life. You
want more happiness and better health in
your life. Success, Happiness, Health and
Money are possible only in the present
moment and do not exist in the past or the
future. So, the starting point for any
success journey begins by taming your
powerful mind to stay in the present
moment. Training your mind to be in the
present moment is the key for perennial
source of happiness & health. The first and
foremost skill to learn before any other
skill is being mindful. When you learn to
become mindful, you can take action faster
than anybody else. The only difference
between a successful and un-successful
person is the former takes ACTION.
Mindfulness is the first step towards taking Action in life. I've found a more
mindful life to be one of the best changes possible. Just a few of the benefits of
mindfulness that I've discovered:
• You're more present, which means you're not missing great moments by
thinking about other things.
• You are more connected with people you're with.
• You are more aware of urges, which means you can
better change your habits
• You notice your resistance, and negative self-talk,
which means you're not powerless to them. Life
becomes better when you savour it.
• There are a bunch of health benefits, too, but Murali Sundaram
beyond all the benefits, a mindful life is just a joy to live. It's not necessarily a
means to an end - it's an end itself.
How to Be Mindful?
• Do one thing at a time. Do Single-task and a big NO to multi-task.
Remember the Zen proverb: “When walking, walk. When eating, eat.”
• Do it slowly and deliberately.
• Do less. If you do less, you can do those things more slowly, more
completely and with more concentration.
• Spend at least 5 minutes each day doing nothing. Just sit in silence.
Become aware of your thoughts. Focus on
your breathing. Notice the world around
you. Become comfortable with the silence
and stillness. It'll do you a world of good
— and just takes 5 minutes!
• Stop worrying about the future –
focus on the present. Just focus on what
you're doing, right now. Enjoy the present
moment.
• When you're talking to someone, be
present. Focus on being present, enjoy
your time listening to that person.
• Keep practicing. When you get
frustrated, just take a deep breath. When
you ask yourself, “What should I do now,
Self?” the answer is “keep practicing.”

I am a resident of Bandra. It was an
absolute pleasure to read your

need not be wasting their time on. It
is shocking that despite the High
Court order back in 2012, no netting

the authorities to take some initiative
for its conservation.

To the Editor,
I must appreciate Actor Kunika
Sadanand's efforts to make a higher
secondary section for the BMC
school students. It is extremely
commendable to be such a wellknown celebrity, but at the same time
ensure the good of the society.
Especially working for this case, has
its own set of blessings. She is
making sure that her celebrity status
brings good to society. I must
sincerely thank her on behalf of all
fellow citizens to keep the good work
going. Very few in the society care
about this section of society, and she
does. Not many celebrities like lead
their lives doing thankless work. She
is surely shouldering a lot of
responsibility. God bless her and her
hard working team.

I have been getting too many
heat boils. What can I apply...
Rajesh Kalra, 35
Dear Rajesh,
Heat boils are superficial bacterial
infection of the hair follicle, I would
advice that you get a prescription of
oral antibiotic from your local doctor
(penicillin group of antibiotics e.g
amoxycillin for a week.
A topical antibacterial ointment e.g
Tbact cream twice daily for a few
days would help in addition to oral
antibiotics. keep the area clean
always , hope this helps you for your
heat boils.
My hair is losing its shine. How
many times should I wash them
in a week... Shraddha shah, 40
Dear Shraddha,
Protect your hair from harsh weather
conditions like cold , dry, windy. you
can wash you hair twice in a week .
Always Use a gentle and sulphate
free cleansing shampoo. Don't use
very hot water for washing scalp
instead use lukewarm water in
winters and cold water in summers.
Don't use hair dryers (Blow drying,
straightening, curling etc) Avoid
chemicals on hair (coloring, bonding
etc) .Use products like conditioners ,
live on serums or gels . Many are
available as OTC product . Hair
gels(specially in males) contain
Panthenol which is an excellent
moisturizer. Panthenol binds to hair
follicles and attracts moisture from
the air. Also you can take an oral
supplement (BIOTIN ) for 6-12
months for improving your hair
quality.
I have extra growth of skin on a
few area. Little tiny bumps.
Someone asked me to do a laser
removal. How safe is that.
Please advice. Manjula shah, 40
Dear Manjula,
Extra skin growth can be either skin
tags or warts .skin tags are painless
skin colored elevations in the skin.
They mostly develop in certain areas
of body where there is friction
between skin areas. Skin tags are
commonly seen over neck , axilla
thighs and genitals. They have to be
particularly differentiated from warts
which is an infection might resemble
in appearance. so proper diagnosis
has to be made.Various treatment
modalities are available for warts or
skin tags . The best treatment is
removal of the wart by
Radiofrequency / electrocautery
under local anaesthesia. Other
treatment options are chemical
cauterisation, removal by laser are
quite safe.hope this would be helpful
to you.
I want to ensue my nails grow
strong. They are brittle and keep
breaking. What can I do.
Pavitra Bedi, 19
Dear Pavitra,
If you have brittle nails the you need
to see the doctor if you are suffering
from any nail fungal infection or you
have any thyroid problem or and
nutritional deficiency. so please
consult the doctor to get id
diagnosed properly. If everything is
fine then you can start using Biotin
supplement, avoidance of frequent
wetting of nails and application of
glycerine regularly would help you.
It often comes as a surprise as to how one confines the feet only to stiff leather.
Shattering this monotony is the fact that apart from making us walk miles in our
lifetime, our feet also lay foundations for a better and healthier body. One such
technique is 'foot reflexology,' a science based on the principle that there are
reflex areas in the feet (over 7200 in each foot) which correspond to all the
glands, organs, muscles and parts of the body, and reflexology is a technique
used to stimulate these reflex areas.
Shalini K, an expert explains, “Foot Reflexology operates on the premise that
every body part and system is controlled by a coinciding pressure point in the
soles, and that massaging a pressure point will improve health in the
corresponding body part. The body is divided into 10 vertical zones or channels.
Energy is accessed through various zones. All body parts within any one zone are
linked by the nerve pathways and are mirrored in the corresponding reflex zone
on the feet. The therapy involves no conscious effort on the part of the patient
but it encourages the body's healing system to balance itself.”
However, if acupressure and reflexology both involve pressing on pressure
points, how are they different? Shalini explains, in foot reflexology, the trigger
points for various organs are thought to be located on 14 meridians of the body.
So, in reflexology, points to be stimulated are limited only to soles whereas in
acupressure, points to be stimulated are scattered all over the body, making
reflexology much simpler than acupressure. “
A reflexology treatment prevents or diminishes common problems of
pregnancy like nausea, swelling on the feet, high blood pressure and the like. it
helps a diabetic to keep blood sugar levels under complete control. It also helps
reduce and at times eliminate problems of the neck, back, shoulder, elbow, hip
joint, knee joint, heart, digestive system and others. Additionally it relaxing
techniques helps alleviate sleeplessness, forgetfulness, headaches and hair
disorders. In a nut shell, “Reflexology believes in a holistic approach to
Swim to shed kilos

For those looking to lose 10 pounds, swimming is a unique and effective
alternative to other types of cardio workouts like running or biking. Swimming
is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise because it works the entire
body, but also provides a low-impact form of exercise. Regardless of your
swimming ability, with some practice, you should be able to hit the pool and
lose some weight when swimming.
HEALTH BENEFITS:
According to studies, 30 to 60 minutes of swimming 4 to 6 days a week can
help individuals both lose weight and reduce health risks such as stoke,
diabetes and heart disease.
Unlike running, biking, and many other forms of cardio, swimming
provides a full body workout. Muscles in the lower body, upper body, core, and
back will all be worked and strengthen during a good swimming workout. In
addition to these muscles, swimming also helps strengthen both the heart and
lungs.
Swimming is often recommended for individuals with joint problems. This
low-impact exercise does not put additional stress upon knees, hips, or backs,
unlike running or biking.
LOSE WEIGHT:
Combined with a healthy, well-balanced diet, individuals who commit
themselves to a regular
swimming routine should
be able to lose weight.
With that goal in mind,
spending 60 minutes a
day, 4 to 6 days a week in
the pool should yield
results.
If you are new to
swimming, start slowly.
During the first week,
begin by doing intervals.
Swim for 30 seconds and
then rest for 30 seconds.
As this gets easier, begin
to increase your swim
time and reduce your rest
interval. Repeat for 30
minutes. Aim to advance
to 60 minutes and to the
point where you can swim up to 20 laps, or 500 meters, without stopping.
For more advanced swimmers, to be able to lose weight, you will need to
maintain proper form and keep your heart rate elevated to reap the benefits of
this cardiovascular exercise. Like the above routine, you will want to focus
upon interval training. Try to sprint for three laps and then swim one lap
slowly. At the end of the last lap, stop and rest for 30 seconds. Continue to
repeat this process for 60 minutes. To avoid boredom, consider switching to
different stokes such as backstroke or the ever challenging butterfly.
Additionally, you can add kicking exercise, where you utilize a kick board, to
your routine.
APPETITE WARNING:
The University of Florida completed a 3 month study of swimming and
determined that certain individuals actually gained weight when following a
swimming regiment. This research determined that some people have their
appetites stimulated after prolonged exposure to cold water temperatures. Be
aware of this and refrain from eating back all those calories you burned during
your workout.
treatment. It believes that no organ of the body can become diseased in isolation
of other organs. Therefore, the entire sole of both the feet need to be
stimulated.”
However, only sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and
imbalances in the feet for effective reflexology. Shalini further elaborates, “To
give a reflexology treatment a therapist mainly uses his thumb, or sometimes his
finger, to apply pressure to different points to release any blockages. Where
there is a blockage, the reflex can feel taut. The reflexologist then gently works at
the point until the blockage is released. However, as commonly perceived, this
treatment is not painful and the pressure applied on the points is bearable. The
treatment is so relaxing that one can even sleep during the 30-minute reflexology
session and at the same time you are also tackling a problem.” Adding a word of
caution, Shalini mentions that it is mandatory attend the recommended number
of sessions advised by a reflexologist. “One needs to understand that continuity
in such treatments is the key to effective treatment. Reflexology is not like a facial
that shows immediate results. You have to strictly follow the time intervals
depending on the severity of the problem. Nothing works overnight.”
Overnight or time consuming results, the fact is that the process of disease
and suffering is complex, yet the causes of most diseases are wrong foods and
drink, unwanted thoughts and emotions, work or home situations that are stress
filled and demeaning, the use of tobacco and/or recreational drugs. So eat
healthy, think healthy and feel healthy. And yes, also massage your feet to good
health!

I have recently started having ragi. Is it good? Please tell me. My name is Kushi
and my age is 35 years.
Hello Kushi, Ragi is also known as finger millet. It is widely consumed without any
refining. Nutritionally it is considered to be better than rice and wheat. Ragi contains
all essential amino acids in adequate amounts. The major proteins that ragi contains
are prolamins and glutelins. Ragi is considered to be a major source of mineral called
calcium. Therefore it is very good for females above the age of 40 – 45 yrs. It is also
rich in fibre. People looking out for weight loss, can opt for ragi instead of wheat. It
will give you a feeling of fullness and at same time it's nutritious. Ragi also contains
some toxins therefore do not consume it on regular basis. These toxins are harmful to
the body and they interfere with mineral availability. Ragi flour is very nutritious and
can be included in ones diet in the form of rotis.
Is fish good for health? Is it fattening? I am 37 years old and my weight is 80 kgs,
is it good for me to have fish? Please help me. Ranjana darne, khar (housewife)
Hi Ranjana, In fish such as cod, haddock, rock fish and sole ;the amount of fat content
is less than 1%.In salmon and mackerel the fat content is as high as 25%.The protein
content of fish is approximately 20% and the mineral content is about 1.5%.Fish is a
excellent source of protein. The biological value of fish protein is about 80% which
means it has good quality of protein compared to any other animal protein. Fishes are
low in calories and carbohydrates and fat thus it can be easily included in an
overweight person's diet. The lipid content of both fish and prawns is very low. Fishes
contain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)(fat required by the body/good for
health). Fishes are rich in calcium particularly small fish when eaten with bones.
Therefore it is advisable for women to have fish thrice a week after the age of 35 – 40
yrs.
Hi my name is Adil, 20 years old, I wanted to ask why it is so important to do a
warm up before any kind of workout? I find doing warm up before exercise very
boring. Is it ok if don't do warm up. Please advise me?
Hi Adil, I would strongly recommend a warm up before any kind of physical activity
(whether its weight training or cardio activity). The objective of the warm up is to
gradually increase the total movement in the preparation of more rigorous activities. A
proper warm up will increase the temperature of the muscle and elevate the body
metabolism. It eases the contraction and relaxation of the muscles thus minimizing the
chances of possible injuries. Warm up enhances the blood flow to the heart thus
reducing the onset of any cardiac abnormalities. It also facilitates oxygen utilization by
the muscles. It prepares the performer physiologically and psychologically. Warm up
should be a gradual process and sufficient to increase the muscle temperature and
blood flow without causing any fatigue. It should be designed in such a way that it
stretches out your muscles and allows your joints to move through their complete
range of motion. It can involve light stretching/flexibility activities. Warm up should
be of at least 10 – 15 mins before your workout.

All about Cash Back Insurance Plans
In our quest to give you information on Cash Back Insurance Plans, here is
Napson Fernandes, Head of Pocket News Alert, in conversation with our
Correspondent about all that you would want to know...
What is a cash back plan?
It is a basic life insurance plan in which a policyholder
gets money back at regular intervals; while securing his
family from the good and bad times of life. The plan is
especially designed to help customers plan their future
goals such as buying a house, paying for child's education,
planning a family vacation etc., as they progress in life. It
not only ensures payouts at regular intervals to meet
specific needs but also provides an assured maturity payout
to secure the life.
What are the significances of a cash back plan?
A Cash Back Plan is designed to help customers:
• Meet their money related goals through regular
guaranteed payouts
• Boost investments through Guaranteed additions
• Enjoy long term investment advantages after paying
for a limited period only
• Protect your family against uncertainties with a Life
cover
• Enjoy tax rebates on the premium paid and benefits
received
• www.pocketnewsalert.com is very concern about tax
and the benefits that will help to the people
What are the key features of these plans?
The cash back plan offers an offer to pay for a limited
period while enjoying regular pay back through the plan
term. In other words, you can pay during your earning
years but stay invested for longer (Payment Term: 5/ 7/ 10
years; Plan Term: 9/ 12/ 15 years. The plan also helps
customers plan for every joyous moment of their life
through guaranteed payouts at regular interval throughout
the plan term. An additional loyalty bonus is paid to the
customer on maturity of the plan.
How does the plan help to meet the changing
needs of the client?
Small or big – we all have goals in life; to go somewhere,
to become somebody, to achieve something. These goals
depend on multiple factors like our age, family status and
aspirations at different stages of our life. Although these
factors are unique to the needs of each individual, there are
some aspirations that we all have. Life is not only about
planning for the future but also about living in the 'here and
now'; meeting short and medium term milestones with
equal aplomb as meeting your long term goal of a
comfortable and tension free future life. Be it your first car,
your home, your child's education or wedding. We require a
regular inflow of cash to meet these short and medium
term goals ensuring our family's happiness. A cash back
plan ensures you are always able to fund those special
moments – both during as well as after the maturity of the
plan.
Are there any tax benefits involved in the plan?
One is eligible for tax deductions up to Rs 1,50,000 on
premiums paid under most of Cash Back Plans as per
Section 80(C) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. One gets full tax
benefits on the maturity amount. One also gets tax benefits
on the withdrawal amounts. Death benefits are also taxfree.
What kind of people should look forward for the
plan?
This plan is suitable for anyone who wants to prepare for
future goals/ milestones in life. This is a simple, nonparticipating endowment plan, which helps one plan for
crucial life events on the back of guaranteed pay-outs at
regular intervals during the plan term as well as maturity
pay-out with accumulated guaranteed additions (added to
the plan annually).

ARIES (March 21 to April

TAURUS (Apr 20 – May

GEMINI (May 21 – Jun

It seems like the starting gate has

How Ajmal was broken
Baljit Parmar
Well trained and heavily brainwashed, Mohammed Ajmal
Amir aka Kasab, the lone terrorist to be captured alive by
the Mumbai Police after the November 26 attacks, proved
to be a hard nut to crack in his initial days in the custody of
the crime branch.
All Lashkar terrorists are trained to avoid spilling the
beans during interrogation. They are put through extreme
physical torture and mental exercises to help them
maintain their resolve.
True to his training, in the initial days of captivity,
Ajmal remained arrogant and even abused and shouted at
his interrogators in an effort to provoke them to harm him
physically. This way he would have had to be moved to
hospital and extracted mileage from it. But his captors
were too experienced to fall for this tactic, and Ajmal was
apparently ill prepared for the shift in interrogation tactics
employed by the crime branch.
In the initial days, ace crime branch officers studied his
behaviour minutely and prepared notes on his strong and
weak character traits. Based on their observations,
different officers were sent separately to talk to Ajmal.
While one tried to bully him, another promised that no
harm would come to him.
But the technique went beyond the good-cop-bad-cop
routine that is now standard operating procedure in
criminal investigations. A key insight the early
interrogators obtained was that Ajmal, like many
Punjabis, was emotional.
That set the stage for joint commissioner of police
(crime) Rakesh Maria to step in. A Punjabi himself, Maria
began conversing with Ajmal in Punjabi.
Reliable sources revealed that
once the 'Punjabi chord' was
struck between the two, Maria
spent hours with the terrorist and
extracted much information from
him. In a couple of days, he
started singing like a canary and
even started asking for favours,
like wishing to talk to his mother,
said a police source.
Baljeet Parmar
The request came as a big
relief to the police. It was a signal that they had broken
through Ajmal's mental defences and that he would be
willing to cooperate. “Till the time a captive remains
adamant, it becomes difficult to break him,” the source
said. Once he starts asking for favours, it shows that he has
lost resistance. It is an age-old interrogation dictum.
The police told Ajmal that though they could not give
him a telephone to talk to his mother, but he was free to
write a letter - which he did. It was a double-edged
weapon. Without any coercion, the police procured a
sample of Ajmal's handwriting while discovering a
weakness - his affection for his mother. That was enough
to dismantle whatever little resistance Ajmal had retained
till then.
The Punjabi chord further helped to convince Ajmal to
write a letter to the Pakistani high commissioner asking
for legal aid as he was a Pakistani national. “Maria saheb's
Punjabi really helped us in a big way,” the source said.
Most times the religious and linguistic barriers become
stumbling blocks during investigation of sensitive cases.
Ajmal felt at ease talking in his mother tongue.

WHY WE WANT TO ISSUE WHITE PAPER ON
ACCOUNTS WITHIN 100 DAYS :
There have been serious flaws and credible allegations of
mismanagement of Tenders, over billing and suspicious invoices at
Club.
The 83 section Enquiry was ordered by Registrar and Mr Hemant
Nair rushed to High Court. He took stay which we will vacate.
All the documents are in custody of two men, Hemant Nair and his
legal guide PK Kumar. For records Mr PK Kumar has been
declared guilty in his society for misappropriation of Funds to the
tune of INR 55 Lakhs.
Once the documents such as Tenders, approval of Contractors,
Bills, Payments etc are available, investigation shall be over
within few days. Criminality sighted will be dealt as per Law with
no mercy will be bestowed on wrong doers.
What corrective measures come out of White Paper on Accounts
will be discussed at SGM and implemented with immediate affect.
Thus next 5 Years will be as per Accounts Procedures approved by
all Representatives.
That's why we have decided to display quarterly accounts and MC
Minutes on Club website for Representatives.
Honesty doesn't come by challenging to prove fraud and sitting as
Secretary in Club. Leave the chair for 3 Days and your bunch of
lies will be nailed. Why have you Mr Hemant Nair not constituted a
committee to look into all this. We know that you hate to have any
sub committees, just same like what you did to Land Committee.
Society reps will have to be involved in sub committees and other
decision making process of the club. They will be part of decision
making rather than once in 5 years a voting phenomenon.
Running of day to day affairs of the society from morning 10 to 11
night is not secretary's job. You are doing it just becoz you don't
want to give management control to a professional, due to fear of
getting exposed .

My tryst with Yoga
Lawrence Nathaniel – R.D
In the year 1994 I was sailing as a Captain on a merchant ship called
M. v. Maratha Challenger owned by Chowgule Steamships of Goa.
Because of the particular route this ship ran on it was prone to
cyclones. I was caught in on such cyclonic storm. For two days I was
not able to sleep much. I had to sit in anawkward position in the
wheel house on the captains chair, trying to take short naps. Finally
we entered the goan port of Mormugao safely at 9.30 hrs on 5th
June 1994 (World Environment Day). Cyclone signal hoisted at port
for the last 3 days warned of an approaching cyclone. On that day at
15.00 hrs an all clear sign was given. This meant that the cyclone
was moving away from the Goa Coast probably heading towards the
Arabian Peninsula. Suddenly the cyclone took a U-turn and sped
towards the Goan coast at 125 kph, and crossed it at 17.30 hrs
causing large scale death and destruction. Many office goers were
either killed or injured while returning home from falling trees. Many
ships broke anchor, drifted on to the land and got wrecked. A huge
Greek ship M. V. Sea Transporter drifted on to the
TajAguada Hotel and was wrecked.
The next day I was removed on a stretcher and
taken to Goa's oldest nursing home – Kamath Nursing
Home at Vasco. My nerves had been compressed
between the vertebral due to sitting in the awkard
position. After being put on traction for more than a
week, I was advised to undergo surgery in order to
remove the compression of the nerves. This was
possible only in Mumbai.
On their advice I consulted noted orthopedic
surgeon Dr. AshitaRao, who said I would have to
endure a painful and risky operation. If all went well I
would have to take bed rest for minimum 6 months
being an operation of the spinal column. The
operation would cost Rs. Five Lakhs beside I would have to give up
my ship job where as a Captain then I was getting Rs. 75,000/- a
month.
A shore job will get me only 10 to 15 thousand rupees. I had a
huge housing loan to pay. I also had to pay the fees of my four
daughters who were studying in reputed collages in South Mumbai.
Even earlier I resigned a shore job of Senior class 1 officer in
Mumbai Port Trust was already fetching me Rs. 15,000/- I could
have easily earned more at this job by other ways and means. But
this was not my cup of tea.
My only choice now I thought was to commit suicide so that my
family would get the insurance money for their survival. Luckily I did
not undergo the surgery nor did I commit suicide.I cheated death
when a close friend of mine, a senior doctor from Hinduja Hospital
Mumbai advised me to visit Prabhat Yoga Institute at Santacruz East
in Mumbai, the oldest and most reputed yoga institute. This
Institute does not charge fees.
After the exercises at the Yoga Institute I was fully cured and
went back to sailing in perfect health. From that time in 1995, I have
been practicing till date the Yoga Techniques taught to me by the
Institute. Now 20 years later I have neither changed my reading
glasses nor visited any doctors. I still retain an amazing body shape
such that my tailor still uses the same measurement given 20 years

ago for my pants, shirts and suit. However it is mandatory for me to
go for a vigorous medical check including tread mill. Whereas as at
the outset I have to crawl into the Yoga Institute, today my medical
tests are clear and now at the age of 73 I can move about actively
and even travel in crowded trains and buses. Thanks to God and
Yoga.
Unfortunately some controversy has erupted about Yoga which
is perpetrated by hate preachers. But for those who believe that
prevention is better than cure there is nothing like practicing Yoga. It
is absolutely necessary to introduce Yoga in schools, to remove the
stress on children. These poor angels are not only overburdened
with their syllabus and homework, but also the donkeys load of their
haversacks. They virtually bend and walk like old people. And this
will have a severe impact on their spinal column.
Suryanamaskar and Pranayam are specific for those who are
suffering from certain disorders and it is not mandatory for all those
who practice Yoga for Good health.
