Thank you for looking at our brochure. Whether you are a first time camper or have been attending camp for years, we are excited to have
you consider Y Camp for the summer of 2016. Y Camp has been a special place for my family and I, as it has for many other families from
around Central Iowa and the elsewhere. Our kids having been coming to camp for many years, since they were old enough to attend. Kate
and I love the way camp has reinforced the values we have tried to raise them with and helped them grow and experience so many things.
Independence, the value of friendship, confidence and skill development all come out of the camp experience. What we have seen from
our kids camp experience has been rewarding for us as parents, and I believe it will be for you as well if you choose to send your child this
summer. There are few things like watching your kids saying goodbye to their new friends on pick up day and listening to their stories of
adventure over the following weeks. It has helped our children develop some grit, instill character and practice being kind and caring people.
What a great experience. I realize you have a lot to consider, and sending your child to camp is a big decision. One that we do not take
lightly. Please look over the brochure, check out our website and look at our Facebook page
or look at videos of past summers At any time, please feel free to call us. Anyone at camp

Why Come To Camp?
We’re dedicated to safety. Y Camp has a terrific safety record. All camp staff members go through a thorough
background check before being hired and are certified in First Aid and CPR. Staff members are well trained in
safety, risk management, child development, program delivery and much more. Y Camp is accredited by the
American Camp Association and takes safety very seriously.
Camp benefits your child. Camp is more than a week away from home. Overnight camp is an opportunity for
growth. Campers at Y Camp explore new skills, make new friends, learn valuable lessons, are able to disconnect from technology, gain a new sense of independence and much more. Camp is a great way for a child to
discover who they are in a setting that is both supportive and encouraging. Campers learn to take care of
themselves and gain sense of confidence that comes with that, all under the supervision of our staff in a safe
setting.
Camp is a place to make friends. Camp is built on relationships. Your child has the opportunity to make new
friends with every cabin mate and fellow camper they meet. Through experiences like campfires, games and
late night talks in the cabin, friendships flourish. Tears are common on the last night of camp as campers say
goodbye to their new found friends. Campers’ shared experiences cement their relationships and fuel them to
stay in contact long after camp ends.
Campers learn and grow while at Y Camp. Your child will learn a lot at Y Camp. They will learn new skills, like
archery or canoeing, through our skill development programs. Campers also learn social skills, independence
and the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility while at camp. We encourage campers to
take on new challenges because of the value of hard work and achievement are essential in every child
development.
It’s fun. Every child wants to know that something is “fun”. We assure you: camp is a blast! Campers and
staff have a great time together. By the end of the week a cabin group is sharing inside jokes and telling
stories of adventures. There are a lot of great activities to participate in. Camp programs are exciting and full
of engagement to make sure that every camper returns home to say that camp was “fun”.

This past summer, Y Camp served more campers yet. All the summer camp weeks
were filled to the brim with more kids who had the opportunity to build relationships, learn
the incredible things they’re capable of and made memories to last a lifetime! Therefore, the
sooner you register the sooner you can save a spot Y Camp for 2016. From being covered in
mud by the creek to a late night conversation with friends, campers gain the independence
that is so important in maturing and self­confidence. Y Camp focuses on the power of relationships and personal development to encourage every camper to appreciate themselves and
their potential. So pack your sleeping bag, suitcase and bring an extra pair of shoes because
at camp these will guide your adventure. Come out to camp; it’s time to grow!
New at Camp this Summer
Horse Stables
Every camper who attends gets the opportunity to ride horses, which means our saddled
friends end up being very hot working in the summer heat. This year the horses and their
riders will be pleasantly surprised to find a new facility
for tacking up and mounting at Y Camp. The new
structure will have a new roof, water and will make it
easier for our staff to keep the horses happy and healthy
during the hot summer months. Additionally, it will make
mounting horses easier and safer for all participants.

Sustainable Solutions
One of Y Camp’s goals is to be more sustainable and
environmentally friendly. This year camp has taken a huge
stride toward meeting our conservation goals by
switching to LED lights throughout camp. This change may seem miniscule, but it greatly
reduces Y Camp’s energy usage. LED bulbs burn brighter, use less electricity and last longer
than standard bulbs. Y Camp’s transition to sustainable lighting is an impactful change that
keeps the future
bright!
ACA Accreditation means that the camp you are considering for your child
cares enough to undergo a thorough (over 300 standards) review of
its operation, from staff qualifications and training to emergency
management. The American Camp Association collaborates with
experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red
Cross, and other youth service agencies to assure that current practices
at the camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp
operation. Camps and the ACA form a partnership that promotes summers of growth
and fun in an environment committed to safety.
VALUE-BASED PROGRAMMING

essential to the YMCA’s cause to strengthen our community, and Y Camp promises to teach

respect and responsibility from their camp experience, we will refund their camp fee –

WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO?
The camp schedule is designed to mix learning opportunities, relationship building and fun.
Our mornings begin with breakfast, followed by a chapel service at Chapel Point. From there
campers go to their own skill development areas where they will learn in our program areas
such as archery, climbing, athletics, horseback riding and more. Cabins rejoin for the lunch
and then a rest period before the afternoon’s activities. Our afternoon programming focuses
on the cabin and building friendships. Campers go with cabin mates to the pool, trading post,
canoeing and many other program areas. After a hearty dinner, campers experience Y Camp’s
nationally recognized evening programs to learn about character development and have fun!
Finally, the day ends with a conversation in the cabin or around the campfire before a much
needed night of rest in our air-conditioned cabins before the next day.
SAFE AND POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Our summer camp program provides a safe environment in which campers can grow, both
socially and personally, while building strong friendships with peers that last a lifetime. Y
Camp focuses on providing summer campers with character building programs that focus on
developing a sense of self-confidence and teaching new skills. We work to couple traditional summer camp with new and exciting program areas and activities. Campers can try
new things, like archery, rock climbing and canoeing or
relax with friends while making friendship bracelets or
fishing along the beautiful Des Moines River.
AMAZING STAFF
All children need great role models. At Y Camp that is
exactly what they will get. Leaders are there to guide
your child through their camp experience; providing
guidance to campers as they develop character, go on
adventures and have good, old-fashioned fun. Providing your child with the highest quality of staff is our
top priority. Therefore all staff are carefully interviewed and screened (including background checks)
before they are ever hired. Once on the Y Camp team Leaders participate in an intense two
week training emphasizing camper care, quality programming and building relationships to
ensure that your camper has a great experience.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Thanks to many generous community supporters, the YMCA
strives to not turn anyone away for financial reasons.
Assistance will be granted to anyone who can demonstrate
a verifiable need through recognized proof of income.

Traditional Camp

Traditional Camp is the mainstay of Y Camp’s summer camp program. It is a great opportunity
to experience the many programs and activities that Y Camp offers. Campers are part of a
cabin of similarly aged peers, with whom they deliberate and decide on what the week will
entail. Our afternoon schedule is designed to give campers and their cabin mates as much
flexibility and creative opportunities as possible by allowing them to create the schedule as
they go. Y Camp also urges campers to choose their individual adventures through our skills
program. They select a set of two to three skill areas they wish to learn more about and
spend four days of the week becoming more proficient. Every evening we end with one of
our evening programs, which are a chance to bring the whole camp together and enjoy being
with the camp community. If your camper is looking for a diverse and empowering experience,
Traditional Camp is the place to start.

Mini Camp
If Mini Camp were to be given a more scholarly name it could be “Introduction to Y Camp”.
Mini campers get a taste of all of the programs and excitement that Y Camp has to offer, but
the camp does not last the full week. As a four day, three night program to prepare enthusiastic young campers for the full week sessions, mini camp mixes large and small group time
so that campers develop friendships and build character every day. Mini Camp is the start of
the journey toward a strong and long-lasting relationship with Y Camp.

Honesty
Ranch Camp

The mist hangs low in the Des Moines River Valley and dew hangs heavy on the grass
as the sun rises and begins to warm the woods and pastures. Their boots wet with that
dew, our ranch campers walk toward the Y Camp ranch ready to saddle their horses and
spend a day riding, grooming, and learning. The equestrian program is a great fit for
horse lovers of all ages. Each week our talented and enthusiastic instructors prepare
lessons for campers that cater to skill and experience. Campers will learn more about
grooming and horse care, horse equipment and riding techniques. On day one, each
camper is partnered with a horse for the week. The two develop a special bond as a
result of the hours spent together each day. Ranch Camp provides a good mix of lessons
and trail rides to ensure that campers learn riding skills and enjoy spending time on
horseback. The program lasts from 6:30am to 12:30pm so that campers can still enjoy
some of the traditional camp activities during the afternoon. Listed below are the experience and age based programs Y Camp offers!
Pony Express
Ages 9 - 11
Pony Express campers are often beginners looking to learn the basics of horse care and riding
technique. These campers receive instruction from our ranch staff on grooming, mounting
saddles, and more. During the week campers go on trail rides, learn basic commands and ride
to breakfast in the morning. For those who love horses but could use more riding experience,
Pony Express is the camp for you.
Bronco Busters
Ages 12 - 15
Designed for the intermediate rider, this camp is the next step up from Pony Express. The
program combines more advanced instruction with longer trail rides so that campers have
more time to develop a bond with their horse. Each week, campers continue to review the
fundamentals of horse care and riding while learning new skills every day. Bronco Busters is a
great opportunity to continue the journey to becoming a Y Camp wrangler.
Ranch and Rodeo
Ages 13 - 16
Ranch and Rodeo is for the advanced rider who is ready to take the next step in their horse
riding career. Campers will learn and practice new skills in the riding arena while taking their
responsibility to a whole new level. Every morning campers will catch their own horse, groom
and feed them, saddle them and take them to the arena. Ranch and Rodeo builds confidence
with its mix of instruction and independence. Those who graduate the program will become
wranglers, and someday may teach campers as a member of Y Camp’s ranch staff. We recommend prior riding experience before joining this camp as the instruction will include more
advanced lessons and require more confidence.

Boys Will Be Boys

In response to the confusing
and competing images of what
it means to be a boy, Y Camp
created its own boys camp. The
activities allow campers to play
in the mud, build bird houses and
go carts, go fishing, explore the
woods around camp and more.
The program provides Leaders
who are strong male role models
for the campers, encourages
respect and responsibility in
each boy’s journey to becoming
a gentleman and teaches the values of confidence and individuality. The adventures are just
around the corner, as each camper will gain friendships and learn lessons to last a lifetime.

Nature Camp
Ages 9 - 11
Utilizing the natural surroundings of the Des Moines River Valley, Nature Camp is a chance
to get hands-on with nature. Led by our own professional naturalist, Mark Runkel, this week
long camp combines instruction with exploration to foster a sense of curiosity in every young
naturalist. Spend the day learning about birds, identifying the trees and plants on camp, studying geology and more. This camp is a great learning opportunity, especially for the camper
interested in the natural sciences. Everyone has the tools to be a naturalist and Nature Camp is
an opportunity to learn and grow in knowledge and critical thinking.

Camp “Dismantled”
Ages 12 - 14
Dismantled is a camp full of opportunities to make the camp experience completely different.
We decided to throw our regular schedule out and create a camp that is, well, Dismantled.
From late night arts and crafts, to canoeing by torchlight, Dismantled offers a different set of
rules. Campers will create a music video, have dinner for
breakfast and paint a horse. These new experiences come
with the strong friendships and learning opportunities
that Y Camp is known for. Sometimes it’s relieving to
turn camp on its head and do things a little differently,
just ask our Dismantled campers!

Top Chef Camp
Ages 9-11
Grab your spatula, measuring cup, and ingredients! Top Chef Camp is designed for the
aspiring chef. You’ll learn how to cook some basic meals as well as prepare more advanced
delicious creations to take home. Campers will make their own cookbook, have an opportunity
to make their own new dish and spend the week in the kitchen. When the young chefs are not
in the kitchen, they are out enjoying camp and building relationships with cabin mates! Fire up
the oven and put your apron on because this week has all the ingredients for a learning and
growing opportunity!

Rope and Rock Camp
Ages 11 - 15
Full of challenges at tree top level, Rope and
Rock is a program for those who love a rush of adrenaline and being high above ground. Every
morning is spent with a certified Leader who shares a passion for high altitude adventures
learning the ins and outs of climbing, from how to tie knots to belay techniques. Each camper
will have the opportunity to try out every
climbing surface and high ropes element
on camp and challenge themselves to climb
faster and higher with an emphasis on safety.

Camper vs. Wild
Ages 10 - 15
Designed for adventurous boys and girls, this
camp is full of campfire cooking, tent camping and survival instruction. Campers leave
the cabins behind and journey into the wild

the guidance of our enthusiastic and trained
Leaders, campers will embrace their inner
woodsman or woodswoman and grow in
confidence and respect for the outdoors.

Art-Rageous
Ages 9 - 12
Art-Rageous is a week long camp directed toward campers who love to create and
express themselves. Working closely with a professional artist and former art teacher,
campers in this great art camp spend every morning drawing, painting, sculpting, and
more. They will also get their afternoon and evening hours to experience the traditional
camp activities with their cabin. By the end of the week, campers bring home more than
just their artwork; they bring home a sense of creativity, confidence and the importance
of being unique.

Gone Fishin’
Ages 9 - 12
With a fishing pole and open water, Gone Fishin’ campers learn the techniques of fishing and
take with them a hobby that will last a lifetime. Our young anglers will spend time fishing in
our own Pugh Pond, test their skills fishing in the Des Moines River, and enjoy a trip to nearby
Don Williams Lake. Under the supervision and guidance of a skilled camp Leader., campers will
learn how to tie a hook, cast, use different types of bait and how to handle fish. Gone Fishin’
follows the DNR’s “Fish IOWA!” program and encourages a love of the outdoors and conservational awareness. Grab your pole or use one of camp’s and join us by the water.

Teen Camp
Ages 13 - 16
Teen Camp translates the Y Camp experience into a program that caters to our older campers.
Today’s teenagers face many challenges, several of which stem from a need for belonging and
acceptance. Y Camp offers an atmosphere
of acceptance and a tradition of community, so that every camper develops
a relationship with camp and campers.
We’ve found that teens prefer more time
to build relationships with peers, a more
relaxed schedule and opportunities to
express themselves; that’s where Teen
Camp comes in. We give the campers opportunities to socialize and build friendships, provide a wide array of skills and
activities for campers to find their niche
and design a schedule that offers more time to
relax with friends in “The Closest Place to Heaven on Earth.”

VIP’s (Volunteers In Progress)*
Ages 14 - 17
Service is a cherished value at Y Camp. As our starting program in the Leadership Development track, VIP focuses on service and its importance to building a strong leader and a
strong community. As a participant in our VIP program, campers take their first steps toward
becoming a Y Camp Leader. The camper’s primary tasks are working in Cownie Dining Hall
doing dishes and cleaning the dining hall before and after meals. Some VIP campers may be
asked to assist leaders in program areas, such as the horse barn or the crafts lodge. The
program provides a fantastic opportunity for person growth as well as an appreciation for
service and the value of generosity. To participate, prospective VIP campers must apply (call
or email Y Camp to receive an application), go through an interview process (typically done in
April and May) and provide letters of recommendation.
* To participate as a first time VIP, prospective campers must submit an application and
THREE letters of recommendation from the following list: teacher, pastor/clergy/congregational leader, Y Camp leader, Y Camp board or committee member, or other non-familial adult.
Returning VIPs must submit an application and TWO letters of recommendation from the
previous list. Candidates will be contacted for an interview upon receipt of letters and application.

LA’s (Leader Assistant)
Ages 15 - 17
The Leader Assistant program centers on the leadership qualities that prepare a camper
to make the transition to staff. Leader Assistants, or LA’s, participate in daily leadership
discussions and trainings, spend time assisting leaders with a program area of their choice,
and work closely with cabin leaders to better understand child care. It serves as a great opportunity to combine the skills learned in the VIP program with new lessons and avenues for
growth.
Weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ^
$205/week (minimum of a two week commitment)
CIT’s (Counselors in Training)**
Ages 16 - 17
As the final step toward becoming a Y Camp leader,
this extensive program prepares teens for the challenges and joys working at camp. The
three-week training emphasizes safety procedures, relationship building, character development, program facilitation and leadership. CIT’s also gain insight into the transition into
adulthood through interview practice, teambuilding activities and trainings that encourage
creative thought. Through observation, discussion and hands-on experience CITs learn what
makes a Y Camp leader. Included in the program is the opportunity to participate in a Red
Cross Lifeguard Instruction course, through which campers can earn a lifeguard certification.
This program is for those who are passionate about children and want to learn more about
themselves and what it takes to become a great leader.
Week 5 – 7 (July 10 – July 30)
$650 for entire three-week program
**To participate in either the CIT or LA program, campers must submit an application, and
TWO letters of recommendation from the following list; teacher, Pastor/Clergy/Congregational
Leader, Y Camp Leader, Y Camp Board or Committee Member. Upon receipt candidates will be
contacted for an interview (typically done in May). To receive an application, please call the Y

^Campers who are part of the Teen Development Program do not stay over on weekends. If

Cabin Mate Request
Y Camp will make every effort to meet cabin mate requests, but we cannot
guarantee more than one request per camper. To guarantee a request campers must be within
one year of age, the same gender, and enrolled in the same program and session.
Parent Packet
After your registration has been confirmed, you will receive a Parent Packet via e-mail, which
includes pick-up/drop-off schedule, health forms, packing list, map and general Y Camp
