LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
February / March 2016
We are very excited about
our February/March issue
of 380Guide! As always,
we are scoping out the area,
looking for the most exciting
events, businesses and developments to share with you. For the past ten
years 380Guide has been a major platform for sharing the happenings
in and around the 380 Corridor and we are the premier publication of
the entire corridor. It has been an amazing journey, growing with the
region, getting to know the area, the developments and most of all the
people. There is nothing like serving such a multifaceted region that is
ever changing.
The residents of the corridor could not be in a more exciting place at
a more energizing time. Sandwiched between the cosmopolitan Frisco
and Plano areas and the artsy, thriving, college town of Denton, the 380
corridor is experiencing explosive growth. Over the years, we have
watched the towns we deliver to grow, flourish and define themselves.
380Guide delivers to every home and business in Little Elm, Aubrey,
Krugerville, Oak Point, Prosper, Celina, Pilot Point, Celina, Providence
Village, Paloma Creek, Savannah and Tioga. We have watched the area
grow from 10,000 rooftops to over 35,000!
In this issue, we would like to welcome the new member of our team,
Jackie Solis. She has taken on the enlivening and diverse roll of our new
Executive Assistant and will be reaching out to our area businesses and
readers. We are also getting ready to overhaul 380Guide’s website and
structure it more like our wildly successful updated 380News.com.
In this issue, we are very eager to share with you information about
the Celina Cajun Festival; the claws are coming out! If you are ready
for music and mudbugs, then make sure you save the date for this fourth
annual event in Historic Downtown Celina. Also mark your calendar
for the new season for Texas-Tulips. This is the second year for this
beautiful attraction in Pilot Point. We also have information about the
annual event, Taste of North Texas, a great place to go sample foods from
about 35 Denton County restaurants. One of our favorite local events
is the Aubrey Casino Night, where an evening of fun also supports the
Aubrey 380 Area Chamber of Commerce. If you want to let go, visit this
year’s Thin Line Fest, where you can view Josh Fox’s film “How to let go
of the World”. The weight is over, and when you read Dr. Bartos’ article,
she will give you helpful insight on how to battle the bulge with some
simple but effective lifestyle changes!
380Guide would like to remind our readers to support our local
businesses. As always, we would also like to thank our wonderful
advertisers for their continued support. It is through their loyalty that we
are able to bring family friendly information to our communities in the
380 Corridor.
Additionally, we would like to thank our readers for their friendly
emails. Don’t forget You Can Take it with You while you are on your
Spring Break vacation, so pack your copy of 380Guide and send us your
photos! It is a great honor to receive your pictures, so keep them coming!
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we hope love is in the air
and that everyone has a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE
Helping Children in the 380 Corridor
Oral health issues affect children in poverty and minorities far more than other
groups. Dental disease in the primary dentition is currently the most common
chronic disease in childhood.
Children with untreated dental decay can have difficulty sleeping, eating and
concentrating in school and more than 51 million school hours are lost each year
to dental related conditions.
Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) is an annual event created by the American Dental
Association (ADA). The program is administered locally through the oversight of
constituent dental societies. The North Texas Dental Society (NTDS) has been
actively involved in creating and establishing the Give Kids a Smile program in
the north Texas communities since 2003.
Since implementing the program, a collaborative partnership was developed
between the NTDS and the Dental Hygiene program at the Collin County
Community College. This partnership creates a way to screen and treat children
at the Dental Hygiene School with volunteer dentists, staff and dental students.
Children that are categorized as low-income families, with the help of school
nurses, are seen at the Dental Hygiene School for a dental screening, X-rays,
prophylaxis, fluoride, as well as dental education. After treatment at the hygiene
school, the children that require additional care are then referred to the “Smile
Factory”, local volunteer general and pediatric dentists that serve as primary
caregivers. All treatment is completed in their offices within the next three to four
months. Referrals to other specialists are done on an as-needed basis. In recent
years, screenings have been done to identify severe malocclusions. These kids are
then referred to volunteer orthodontists that will provide this treatment at no cost.
The goals of this program are to: 1) Increase children’s access to oral
healthcare. 2) Strengthen the infrastructure of the program by increasing the
number of volunteers, increasing the number of children participating, and
increasing the number of dentists able to treat patients. 3) Foster mentorship
and leadership infrastructure between the professional dental associations,
dental students and dental hygiene students.
Recent data from previous Give Kids a Smile events organized by the North
Texas Dental Society show that there is a great need for continuity of care once
initial treatment is rendered by our team of volunteer dentists. In the last three
years, an average of 60 patients have been screened and referred to our “Smile
Factory”. Our 2015 GKAS event was done on March 28th with great success.
The 2016 GKAS event will be done April 2nd.
While we have enjoyed great success in treating our underserved population,
more work needs to be done. It continues to be a challenge to identify the children
who most need our services and more information needs to be distributed
focusing on prevention. This will improve the quality of life for the children in
the north Texas area. We have been fortunate to have a community of dentists
who are generous of their time and resources for this important cause.

HUGH COLEMAN:
112 PARK DESIGN
From Drab to Fab on a Dime!
DENTON COUNTY’S VERY OWN

When Republican
Hugh Coleman was

Commissioners Court
in 2009, few people
realized that he would
become one of the
most influential people
in the region in the
realm of transportation planning and road construction.

Coleman has worked hard to plan, fund and construct roadways in Denton
County Precinct One and in seven years in office has amassed an impressive
list of transportation accomplishments which includes fighting for the planned
expansion of U.S. 380 from west of U.S. 377 to the Collin County line. With
$50 million from the 2014 Proposition One election, TxDOT is planning
to increase the number of lanes from four to six and improving several
ntersections.
Coleman said he sees a quality network of roads as being about much more
than moving cars around Denton County.
“Too often, I think elected officials and transportation planners get so wrapped
up in one or two pet projects that they miss the forest for the trees,” Coleman said.
“I am less concerned with individual roads as I am with creating a comprehensive
road network throughout Denton County and the region, because this is about far
more than simply moving traffic from Point A to Point B. It is also about public
safety, economic development and quality of life.”
Coleman said he is excited about recent legislation passed by the Texas
Legislature that will increase funding for road construction and also streamline
the process of approving projects to eliminate waste and inefficiency.
“The passage of Proposition 7 last November will add $2.5 billion a year to
the state highway fund without raising taxes,” said Coleman. “That is huge,
and these funds can only be used to construct, maintain or acquire rightsof-way for public roads or to repay the principal on general obligation bonds.
Almost as exciting is House Bill 20 which will give cities and counties more
input with TxDOT when it comes to prioritizing projects in their area, and it
creates more accountability to ensure that TxDOT is reaching the goals set for
them by the legislature.”
With over 350 miles of county roads in Precinct 1, Coleman says he is proud
of what he has been able to achieve in a relatively short period of time. Since
2009, he has been able to provide pavement on over ninety percent of the
roads in Precinct 1, in addition to partnering with TxDOT and municipalities
around the county to expand FM 423, FM 720, FM 2181, FM 455, FM 2499,
US 377 and US 380 along with municipal streets such as Mayhill in Denton,
Lake Sharon and Parkridge Blvd in Corinth, McRenyolds Road and Cowling
in Sanger, Teal and Stonebrook in Frisco, and Naylor in Crossroads.
“When it comes to transportation funding and road construction, nothing
is quick and easy,” Coleman concluded. “You’ve got to fight hard, play the long
game and understand that
getting a project completed
is often a war of attrition.
It’s certainly not glamorous,
but those who stick it out
and slug their way through
the bureaucracy, delays and
roadblocks can achieve great
things for their community.”

Working for the Citizens
demands transparency and accountability from anyone who seeks to
do business with the county. Of particular note, Coleman’s consistent
opposition to the creation of special taxing districts has put him in
direct conflict with a group of very powerful special interest groups
from outside of Denton County.
“These taxing districts are used all over the state to subsidize
residential development in unincorporated areas, and they leave the
taxpayers holding the bag to pay for core services like police and fire
protection,” Coleman said. “I am fundamentally opposed to this type
of corporate welfare, and make no mistake about it, that is exactly what
these special taxing districts are. I will not stand by quietly and allow
private companies to fleece the people of this county.”
Denton County Commissioner Hugh Coleman is running for
re-election in the March 1 Republican Primary Election. During his
time on the commissioner’s court, Coleman has been a strong advocate
for open government, and has been a watch dog for the taxpayers of
Denton County.
“I don’t work for the county; I work for the citizens who elected me,”
said Coleman. “When I first ran for office, I promised the voters of
Precinct 1 that I would fight against the special interests and those who
seek to profit off the hard-working families of Denton County. By any
measure, my record shows that is exactly what I have done.”
Coleman is widely regarded as the most vocal conservative member
of the Denton County Commissioners Court, and he has often
ruffled the feathers of those who attempt to use the levers of county
government to line their own pockets. He asks the hard questions and
In addition to his efforts to stop special taxing districts, Coleman has
also opposed the tolling of existing highways as double taxation, he has
pushed for full and open online disclosures of campaign finance reports
by local candidates and officeholders, and he has fought to make sure
Denton County does not follow the federal government’s path of higher
taxes and over-spending by approving the lowest tax rate in the last five
years.
Prior to being elected as County Commissioner for Precinct 1,
Coleman was a prosecutor, a civil attorney and an assistant district
attorney. He and his wife, Bernadette, an Occupational Therapist with
the Denton County Special Education Co-Op, have two children. The
Coleman Family are members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
On March 1, let’s re-elect a proven, conservative leader who puts our
families first – County Commissioner Hugh Coleman. You can learn

Of Time magazine’s top New Year’s resolutions, lose weight and get fit is
number one. Not surprisingly, it tops the list every year. If I had a dollar for
every patient that came into my office desiring to change their body, I could
probably feed the world entire. The biggest challenge? How. To. Do. It.
It seems easy enough. Eat less, move more. It’s almost that simple. Stress,
hormones, family meal time challenges, spouses who want you to stay the
way you are, well-meaning friends who enable bad habits—it’s no wonder the
number one resolution in America is derailed by Valentine’s Day.
Working with women over the years, I’ve realized some key points to help
lose (or giveaway, as we like to say) the weight and keep it off. When a patient
comes in desiring to lose weight—whether it’s 5 or 100 pounds—the first thing
we do is a full medical assessment. Is the patient’s thyroid working well? Do
they have hypertension or diabetes?
Secondly, we discuss weight loss medications. While certain drugs work
really well and really fast, they do nothing to change behaviors and at the end
you’re thinner, but malnourished and soon gain the weight back. Medicines
are like crutches for a sprained ankle—they are there to help you walk in the
beginning, but it’s not a permanent part of your lifestyle. You don’t see someone
with an ankle injury walking with crutches two years later.
Thirdly, nutrition is clearly important and we always recommend seeing
a dietitian. They can help plan meals with those finicky kids, the husband
who won’t even look at greens, and how to navigate the bunco buffet table.
Insurance often covers visits with these experts, and their other goal is to
keep your body nourished with all the vitamins and good fats that keep you
looking young.
Fourthly…movement. I’m not advocating walking like a gerbil on the
treadmill for 2 hours. My favorite way for patients to get that movement in?
Fitness trackers. Aiming for 10,000 steps a day is not just a random number.
Japanese researchers in the 1980s found people who were “active” did about
10,000 steps a day. There are numerous, easy way to increase your steps per day,
which we’ll get into next issue. By the way, the average American struggles to
get 5,000 steps per day, so we have our work cut out for us.
Lastly, I ask my patients to CHOOSE to be healthy and fit. There is no
magic pill. There is no magic formula. I always ask my patients to take
personal responsibility for everything they do, good or not so good. Owning
your health gives you power. At the end of it all, the goal is for you to be
healthy. And that number on the scale will agree.
DR. BARTOS’S TIPS FOR WEIGHT LOSS:
· Aim for 1200 calories (at least) a day
· Plan on moving 10000 steps
· Put your goals on a vision board—and look at it twice daily
· Use meditation apps at bedtime (Andrew Johnson’s “lose weight” and “get
fit” are two great ones in the app store, and only $1.99)
· Put the scale in the trunk of your car and only weigh monthly. Yes, that’s
right. Once a month! Hormones can change the scale for the worse certain
times of the month for women, so always weigh every 4 weeks.
· If you are on weight loss medication, plan that one day you will do it on
your own without any extra help. It’s not a forever tool.
· Visual food diaries are the best, and easy to do: snap a photo of everything
you eat. Then you can go back and review at week’s end.
· Know, accept and embrace that this may change relationships you have
with friends and family. As Buddha said, “You, as much as anyone in the
universe, deserve your love and affection.”
Dr. Bartos is an OB/GYN in Cross Roads. Her practice—be. Women’s Health
& Wellness—focuses on the whole woman—offering yoga, health workshops, and
traditional ob/gyn services. Their office also sees and treats men of all ages as well.

Opening night at Thin Line

festival, begins with the Texas
premiere of Oscar nominated
director Josh Fox’s new film,
How to Let Go of the World,
organizers have announced.
Also, Bri Bagwell, 2013 and
2014 TRRR Female Vocalist
of the Year, will perform at the film’s
after-party at Dan’s SilverLeaf. For five days, Denton’s historic downtown
square will be full of activity with Thin Line’s engaging program of high
quality documentary films, world-class music, and a diverse selection of
photography. How to Let Go of the World Director Josh Fox traveled to 12
countries on six continents to film How to Let Go of the World (and Love
All the Things Climate Can’t Change). The film, selected for this year’s
Sundance Film Festival, acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some
of climate changes’ worst consequences. The documentary addresses
through important stories of courage and community what climate change
can’t destroy. Fox was Oscar nominated for Gasland, a 2010 documentary
on fracking and the oil industry, and won a primetime Emmy for his film
direction. How to Let Go of the World debuts in Texas at 7 p.m., Wednesday,
February 17 at the Campus Theatre. A party and live music show follows at
Dan’s SilverLeaf. Director Fox will be in attendance.
Thin Line Film Fest, 2016 marks the ninth year for Thin Line, which began

“Documentaries give our audiences a chance to discover diverse peoples

added. “Thin Line refers to the space between two extremes. That is where
we see the drama, the conflict and often the truth.” Nearly $20,000 in cash

Feature and Short, Best Student, and the Denton Award. In other events,
a “secret” film screening at Campus Theatre with special guests will be

IT’S TIME FOR TULIPS IN TEXAS
If you live in the 380 Corridor, you probably visited Texas-Tulips last year. If not, while
driving down F.M. 2931, you may have noticed rows and rows of beautiful tulips on the east side
of the road. This year turn in and take a stroll through the colorful fields. Last year Texas-Tulips
had 18 varieties of tulips, but this year they have 45 varieties.
Have you ever imagined walking through the colorful tulip fields in Holland, picking the
perfect flowers, and putting them in a basket, holding hands with your children or your
romantic interest? Just the thought is dreamy. Now, due to some innovative thinking and two
generations of experience you don’t have to get on a plane and fly across the ocean. TexasTulips brought this previously unattainable experience right here to Pilot Point, Texas. They
premiered this amazing tulip farm last year and it was the talk of the 380 Corridor!
Pieter Koeman, after a life changing experience, decided it was time for something new.
Moving from a small farm town outside of Amsterdam, he now lives in Pilot Point with his
wife Petra and their children Pieter Jr. and Hillary and his mother Afra, a young 73 year old
who is still active in the family business. This family is eager to share with the 380 Corridor and
surrounding communities their love and knowledge of beautiful tulips. What could be better
than walking in a field with thousands of tulips in Texas? Imagine happy children picking tulips
for mom and dad, grandma and grandpa. An experience that will be etched into your memory
for a lifetime, or a new family tradition that you return to year after year!
Or, if you prefer you could spend a peaceful afternoon alone picking a bouquet of tulips
to brighten up your home and your spirits. What a unique way to celebrate Spring or show
your love to family and friends with a gift of a beautiful bouquet of tulips from Texas-Tulips!
The Koeman family will professionally wrap your bouquet with love to ensure a long life of
freshness for enjoyment.
Besides picking a bouquet from the tulip farms, imagine the many great photo
opportunities. The farm offers a great location for family photos, to go next to the highly
coveted Texas Blue Bonnet pictures we all seem to take every year! You will be able to take the
most beautiful and unique pictures between their spectacular fields of tulips. At Texas-Tulips
you can also enjoy a wide variety of amazing tulips dancing in the sunshine. It is a sight to
behold as the tulips open up row by row to scoop up the sun’s rays. It is amazing to see how
alive and active tulips can be. Capture the bright colors every moment of the day. These vibrant
flowers, joyful memories and spectacular images can be captured at Texas-Tulips! For the little
ones, the staff at Texas-Tulips has created a hay maze. This maze gives children the chance to
explore and learn through play. The fresh air and gorgeous surroundings will offer you and your
family a healthy and unique outing.
The Koeman story begins in Holland, the Netherlands. With a spade and onion seeds, Piet
and Afra Koeman started a horticultural farm almost forty years ago. As the farm grew, they
added leeks, chrysanthemums, iris and tulip bulbs to the production process. Gradually, they
extended the acreage and specialized in tulip bulb production and cultivating tulips in their
greenhouses. Over the years, their production of tulip bulbs increased to over eighty acres and
in winter they produced ten million tulips in their greenhouses. The flowers were sold at flower
auctions in the Netherlands.
In 2011, Piet Koeman passed away at 69 years old. After this tragic loss, Pieter and his family
decided to change course and make a life change. After visiting Texas several times, they
decided to set up a tulip company in Pilot Point, Texas. In Pilot Point, they found the perfect
combination of fertile soil, country charm, and nice weather during the spring season. To make
it complete, they loved the gentle rolling hills, ranches and horses in the area. The family
having experienced years of the wholesale business, wanted to get involved with the final
customers and work on the retail side of the tulip and floral business.
Texas-Tulips is about a ten minute drive off Highway 380 and is open from 9.00am till
8.00pm during tulip season, running from early March through mid April. There is an entry fee
of 2.50 per person 16 and over (children are free) and parking is free. For more information and
an interactive map to the farm, please visit www.texas-tulips.com.

Lynette Roberson has an Avowed Passion for Library, Advocacy and Community Partnerships
MEET LITTLE ELM’S NEW PUBLIC LIBRARY MANAGER
Little Elm Public Library names Roberson as
manager. A highly-experienced librarian with an
avowed passion for library advocacy, community
partnerships and mentoring the next generation of
library professionals has been appointed as Manager
of the Little Elm Public Library, says Town Manager
Matt Mueller.
Lynette Roberson, who earned a Master of Library
Science from the University of North Texas, started on
Jan. 20 after the Town concluded an exhaustive search
to fill the director position. Roberson’s graduate degree
cluded certification in Advanced Management in Libraries and Information
Agencies. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art from Centenary College of
Louisiana.
Prior to her appointment in Little Elm, Roberson served as a Senior Librarian
and District Manager with the City of Dallas Public Library system, and worked
for the public libraries of The Colony and Plano. As a District Manager in Dallas,
Roberson was instrumental in assisting branch library staff with collection
development and budget expenditures, and played a key role in hiring, training,
and implementing system-wide policy.
Before her promotion to District Manager, she served as a Branch Manager
within the Dallas system. In The Colony, Roberson was a reference librarian,
and served as adult and children services librarian in Plano. Before entering the
26
www.380Guide.com
library career field, she worked in retail management and the insurance industry.
She is a member of Texas Library Association’s 2014 Texas Accelerated Library
Leadership Institute (TALL Texans), a 2014 American Library Association
Emerging Leader, and a 2006 American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum
Scholar. She serves on a number of ALA committees. During the 2014 ALA
Annual Conference, she presented a session entitled “‘S.T.E.M’-ulating Young
Minds: Creating Science-Based Programming @ Your Library.” That session was
subsequently converted into an article for publication in the Journal of Library
Administration in 2015.
“Libraries are as relevant and necessary today as they were thousands of years
ago,” she said. “When I re-entered the profession, the fear was that e-books and
technology would make libraries obsolete. We’ve seen the opposite happen;
libraries, specifically public ones, aren’t just book repositories, they’re community
centers.”
Her goal is to continue to make the Little Elm Public Library a place where
people can gather freely to exchange information, receive beneficial services,
participate in community-building, and have their voices heard.
“People can access information more easily than ever, from more sources
than ever,” she added. Roberson wants to encourage the development of
knowledgeable, trained librarians to help people find the most accurate and
useful information to meet their needs.
