2013-2014 Annual Report - United Way of Denton County
2013 ANNUAL 2014 REPORT Our Mission is to Improve Lives in Denton County Sponsored and Printed In-Kind by: WE’VE MOVED! A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2013 - 2014 Pay us a visit anytime at 1314 Teasley Lane BOARD MEMBERS 2013-2014 was a year of growth and change for United Way of Denton County. Through the generosity of nearly 10,000 donors, United Way of Denton County and our community partners launched new and innovative collective impact efforts. Our move to our new office space at 1314 Teasley Lane in Denton allowed for continued expansion of university internships in ways that greatly increased our impact across the communities of Denton County. Our fundraising efforts grew to over $2.2 million and we collectively improved the lives of 65,218 of our neighbors, co-workers, and friends in Denton County. Through your support, United Way of Denton County’s Community Investment volunteers recommended an overall increase of 16% to our 20 Partner Agencies to advance the invaluable work they do to help victims and marginalized people among us. For a second year in a row, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program returned more than $1,000,000 to the pockets of our working poor in Denton County while saving these tax payers an estimated $147,000 in preparation fees. Together we launched Mentor Denton, a collective impact effort to match volunteer mentors with at-risk children through the help of local non-profits, school districts, public and private partners. Findings in our Community Needs Assessment reports continued to guide our development of programs and services to meet gaps in our community. In 2013, we published the organization’s first Mental Health Needs Assessment report which found that mental health services in Denton County is one of our greatest needs. In response, a private donor committed funding to form our Denton County Citizen’s Council on Mental Health focused on raising community awareness of mental health issues, advocating for the development of widely available services for those in need and mobilizing increased funding for mental health services in Denton County. The resources we mobilize to help our neighbors need to grow along with our community. Over 104,000 of our neighbors are “food-insecure.” 1 in 3 (over 35,000) of our children are at-risk of dropping out of school. Nearly half of our community will experience mental health crisis in their lifetime. When we LIVE UNITED, we come together as a community and mobilize community resources around the areas of EDUCATION, INCOME, and HEALTH. United Way of Denton County is the backbone organization behind collaborative efforts in our community that improve lives across Denton County. On behalf of our board of directors, lifetime members, and staff, thank you for your support and commitment to improving lives in Denton County.
