⑫ Is it Possible to Maintain the Superiority of Japanese Passenger Car Engine Technology? 2014
- Activities of the Engine Research Committee for Passenger Cars and GIA Cooperation Friday, May 23, 9:30 to 12:10 Main Hall, Conference Center Session in Japanese
[Forum Text 3,000yen(tax incl.)]
■ The increasing pace of technological advancement and innovation is highlighting the challenges faced by automakers
in terms of development resources. Although in Europe, industry, academia, and government are already working as
one in conducting research and development with high goals, Japan cannot be said to have such a framework in place.
To avoid falling behind as industry-academia-government cooperation improves European internal combustion engine
engineering, the JSAE Joint Research Center has, since April 2012, held repeated discussions on the course of joint
research on internal combustion engines through industry-academia-government cooperation in Japan, and conducted
several trials. In April 2014, concrete, large scale research aimed at enhancing internal combustion engine engineering
and training expert engineers got underway in the context of a full-scale industry-academia-government cooperation
framework. The purpose of this forum to report on the fruits of the Joint Research Center labor over the last two years,
to communicate where industry, academia and government collaboration is headed through lectures and debates, and to
provide a correct understanding of the present and future situations.

dissemination of material engineering information from the fields of steel, light materials, and chemical products,
has planned this forum to focus on changes involving the basic materials that support the basic structure of the
automobile, as well as on future technological trends and the possibilities offered by new materials. The future direction
of automotive material engineering will be shared through the participation of parties involved in the automobile and
related materials manufacturing industries.

⑭ Vehicle Safety Strategic Plans in the US, EV and Japan, and Global Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations
- The 15th Symposium on Vehicle Safety Friday, May 23, 13:30 to 16:40 Main Hall, Conference Center
Session in Japanese & English*
Simultaneous Translation
■ In 2013, there were 4,373 traffic accident fatalities in Japan. Although this is less than in the previous year, there are
signs that the decrease is leveling off and achieving the government target of less than 3,000 fatalities by 2015 will
require even further action. Recent automotive technology advances have brought collision avoidance technology to the
market and, coupled with collision safety technologies, the expansion of such preventive safety technologies is creating
high expectations. In this forum, we will be joined by concerned parties from North America and Europe in discussing
international traffic safety and clarifying strategies for future initiatives.

■ Signs of significant economic development in other emerging Asian markets are attracting attention from all around the
world. Benefiting from economic growth in these markets is a particularly important factor for corporate expansion and
growth, especially for companies in Japan, China, and Korea. Reflecting the global interest in emerging Asian markets,
the forum will focus on the automotive circumstances in these markets. Possible topics for discussion include, the
potential of emerging Asian countries as export processing/assembly bases or manufacturing bases, trends in emerging
Asian markets, issues related to local needs and customer preferences, the merits and issues of venturing into emerging
markets, issues and hurdles related to national characteristics, local societies, cultures, and the like. Through this forum,
we hope to create a common awareness to help support the development of the automotive industry and automotive
technology over the region as a whole.

⑯ Vehicles Designed to Support Global Logistics
- People, Materials, Dreams, and Recipes for Working Vehicles Friday, May 23, 13:00 to 17:00 F203, Annex Hall Session in Japanese
[Forum Text 3,000yen(tax incl.)]
■ Why are typical Japanese work vehicles such as the trucks and buses that support society, the economy, and everyday life
designed the way they are? What concepts are involved in commercial vehicle design, which differs from that of vehicles for
private use? How does the design of work vehicles respond to the myriad requirements of customers worldwide? This forum
will use a variety of perspectives, including history, market characteristics, and brands, to provide an opportunity to learn
about the usually invisible and inaccessible world of commercial vehicle design and its role in society. Also, by increasing
awareness of commercial vehicle design, the forum will strive to stir interest in this field.
