Our Lady Queen of Martyrs
The Witness
September 13, 2009 Beverly Hills, Michigan
Thoughts from Fr. Scott
As the weeks move along, we are
fast approaching some busy days
around our parish. The end of
this month and beginning of
October are filled with fun
communal events to bring great
joy to our hearts. The parish
golf outing is scheduled for
Friday, September 18th. If you
would like to play you will find
details about the outing, including directions on how
to register, elsewhere in The Witness. The following
weekend, Saturday, September 26th, we will host a
“Texas Hold’em” tournament here at OLQM. It
should be a fun and interesting afternoon seeking to
raise funds for our parish community. The first
weekend in October is filled with different things. The
Oktoberfest will take place and Sunday School begins
for our little ones. I am looking forward with great joy
to all of these events and direct your attention
elsewhere in the bulletin to find further information
about any one of them. It just goes to show how
active our community can be when we direct our
efforts for good.
Very shortly, near the beginning of October, we will be
starting up our RCIA group for the coming year. The
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by
which we receive people formally into our Catholic
Church. Any adult seeking to be received into the
Church should contact me directly to fill out the
paperwork and receive further information.
A
number of people have already expressed an interest
in the group for the coming year. An invitation is
being extended to any and all who wish to formally
become a member of the Catholic Church.
Our second reading this weekend reminds us that our
faith is to be a “both and” proposition not an “either
or” faith.
The Apostle James reminds us to
demonstrate our faith by working for the Lord. It is
not sufficient to simply say we have faith without
making sure to act in a positive manner as well.
Taking care of the needy and being people of great
charity always demonstrates the fruit of our prayer
and hope of God. Let us then serve the Lord and heed
the voice of James, by working for the glory of God
and sharing the faith that always brings hope to those
who are in need.
God Bless and have a great week!
Fr. Scott
The Noon liturgy on Sunday, September 27th, will be
my formal installation as Pastor of Our Lady Queen of
Martyrs. I am looking forward with great joy to this
day. I write about this Mass only to inform and ask
everyone, if possible, to attend. It would be fulfilling Thought for the week: As the saying goes: “God
and wonderful to have a Church full of people on this would like us to be joyful.” Therefore let us rejoice in
day. Of course, the parish and school staffs, the Him this weekend and always!
parish council, and all commission members are
asked to be present as they have an important role to
play in the liturgy. I understand it has been some
time since the parish has participated in this formal
Rite of Installation for a Pastor. It is a most joyous
and interesting liturgy indeed. Please mark your
AFTER ALL MASSES
calendars and plan to attend.

CHAPEL INVITE
Seminarian Dave, in one of his
articles, said that we are blessed
at OLQM to have an Adoration
Chapel. Yes we are and it has
been here for 12 years plus.
Come visit anytime!
We have many regulars who
come each week at their chosen
hour to pray in His Presence. The
unchosen hours we hope to fill to
keep our prayer continuous.
Maybe your schedule could
absorb a special time each week
for you. Look at our needs and
perhaps choose. An hour passes
quickly with private prayer, the
rosary, spiritual reading (we have
many good books). We also have
a Prayer Petition Box for special
needs which are prayed for by all.
Summer is passing (where did it
go) and September seems to
resume a more regular schedule.
Put Him in that line up.
Blessings abound!
Chapel hours are 6 A.M. to midnite (5 P.M. on Saturday and
Sunday). Sign a slip for an hour
if you are able. Notice we have a
Substitute Plan in place.
Call us with any questions.

Saint Damien de Veuster’s
Relics Coming to Detroit
The Archdiocese of Detroit is
uniquely privileged to host the relics
of St. Damien de Veuster on
Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Cathedral
of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Blessed Damien, who lived from
1840 until 1889, will be canonized a
saint on Oct. 11 at the Vatican. He
was a priest of the Congregation of
the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
and was known for his service in
Hawaii to those suffering from
Hansen’s disease, or leprosy.
Detroit currently is the only city in
the continental United States
scheduled to host St. Damien’s firstclass relics, which are parts of the
saint’s body. They will be at the
Cathedral all day for veneration.
More details about the visit will be
forthcoming on the Archdiocese of
Detroit’s
Web
site at
www.aodonline.org. To learn more
about St. Damien, visit

OUR LADY QUEEN OF MARTYRS 2009 OKTOBERFEST AUCTION
OCTOBER 2ND, 3RD & 4TH – PARISH GROUNDS
One of the major reasons for the success of any Parish Festival is the generosity of the people that
live and worship within our parish family. We need each and every family, neighbor and friend to
help make our Oktoberfest Weekend a success. Above and beyond the need for patrons and
volunteers of our event, we need to defray many of the upfront costs, so we can make this a
successful event. This year we are hoping you can help with a sponsorship on one or part of the
following items listed on this form. All sponsors will be listed on this form as they are received and
will be added to our signage and booklets at the event. Your sponsorship is tax deductible.

The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist
Is it fitting that Christ's Body and Blood become present
in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine?
“Yes, for this way of being present corresponds perfectly to the sacramental celebration of the Eucharist. Jesus
Christ gives himself to us in a form that employs the symbolism inherent in eating bread and drinking wine.
Furthermore, being present under the appearances of bread and wine, Christ gives himself to us in a form that
is appropriate for human eating and drinking. Also, this kind of presence corresponds to the virtue of faith, for
the presence of the Body and Blood of Christ cannot be detected or discerned by any way other than faith.
That is why St. Bonaventure affirmed: ‘There is no difficulty over Christ's being present in the sacrament as in
a sign; the great difficulty is in the fact that He is really in the sacrament, as He is in heaven. And so believing
this is especially meritorious’ (In IV Sent., dist. X, P. I, art. un., qu. I). On the authority of God who reveals
himself to us, by faith we believe that which cannot be grasped by our human faculties (cf. Catechism, no.
1381).”
