2014-2015 Annual Report - Davis Education Foundation
Annual Report 2014-2015 The Davis Education Foundation believes in the importance of public education and the success of every child. The Foundation has worked since its inception with friends and partners to make a difference in Davis School District’s public schools. The Foundation works alongside teachers to provide students the support necessary to not only succeed in the classroom, but to succeed in life. Through its efforts, students’ educational experiences have been enhanced, teachers’ resources have been multiplied, and many horizons have been broadened. The Davis Education Foundation believes in investing in students and educators to ensure a brighter future for our children and community by inspiring each child to succeed. We thank each of our community partners for supporting the students and for making the difference in the life of a child. The Foundation relies on good partners to make educational dreams become reality. We know that the return on your investment is invaluable in the life of a child. You are the reason the Foundation has been successful in expanding the walls of the classroom, providing students and teachers the resources, equipment, experience and materials necessary for academic success.Your funds have provided non-verbal students the gift of voice for the first time with the aid of technology. We have been able to provide essential clothing, shoes, and eyeglasses to children in need. The Foundation, because of your generosity and support, has provided technology labs, science equipment, books, musical instruments, learning centers, field trips, and art supplies to support the 70,000 students in our district. We thank you. Our teachers and students thank you! It is an honor and privilege to work with each of you. Without you, the work would not be possible. — Jodi Lunt Foundation Director Message from the Foundation Board President “Education is the most important thing we can give our children and grandchildren. Resources for teachers and staff are limited and the Foundation is committed to help provide things our tax dollars don’t provide to enrich the learning experience for students in the Davis School District. I personally value the great education I’ve received and the educators who helped instill a love of learning in me that has made my life so rich with opportunities. I want to do all I can to help students in Davis County to have the same opportunities that I had and stand shoulder to shoulder with the teachers who give so much of their time and own means to provide the extra things for their students. I’m proud to be part of the team at the Davis Education Foundation that adds funds, resources and recognition for these students and educators.” — S. The Gala was held at the Davis Conference Center on April 24, 2015. The event was made possible by our generous community partners and sponsor. At the 2015 Gala, more than $215,000 was raised. Many factors contributed to the success, including attendees using their smartphones to bid on 317 items. A special thank you to the schools and communities that donated many of the items in the silent and live auctions. The talent for the night was made up of 31 individual students, or groups of students, from the Davis School District. They shared their musical abilities with the more than 850 people who attended the event. I have a child who attends kindergarten in the Davis School District. We live in Davis County, so to start, it's very personal to me. The gala is an opportunity for us to earn a large sum of money by doing something nice for the people who give. The Foundation staff works all year round from fall to spring to make this a successful event. They are a great group of people who are working hard constantly for the Davis School District, building relationships and increasing everyone's knowledge and awareness of what they do for long-term philanthropic results. The Gala is a way for companies and people to see where the money they donate is going. It's a way to connect and network with the community we live in. I truly enjoy hosting a big party and it's even more exciting to host a big party to earn money for a great cause. Education is power. It's an energy we are passing on. It's a connection and a bridge we are building for our future. I feel at the Gala we connect the generous donors to see and hear the rewards of their donations. I enjoy hosting this event for our community to experience this. I will continue to serve Davis education in whatever way I can.” Samila Paul Decaria Gala Chair HR Generalist Zions Bank Principal Note “The Davis Education Foundation is a ‘life-saver’ for my school, teachers, classrooms, and students. Mountain High School is an alternative high school. Over 50 percent of our students are living in poverty. This presents some unique challenges. Our school is small but our needs are many. Our facilities consist of a small brick-and-mortar building with 16 additional portable classrooms. Our fitness facility is on another campus located a block away from Mountain High. The fitness facility serves multiple alternative programs including Renaissance Academy, Youth-in-Custody, and Mountain High School. The equipment in the fitness facility has been ‘hand-me-downs’ from a variety of sources until the Davis Education Foundation generously donated $13,000.00 to purchase new equipment and a new floor for the fitness facility. Additionally, our teachers have applied and received the Cash for Classroom grants to purchase classroom materials and supplies including; yoga mats, pedometers, small hand weights, and fabric for student projects in FACS. Our students are the real beneficiaries of the Davis Education Foundation and their generous partnerships. The Foundation has donated many resources to offset the student needs for school supplies, coats, gloves, and shoes, canned meats for our food pantry, scholarships, and personal care items for our students. The Davis Education Foundation is continually providing support with resources to Mountain High School to help students to be successful in their academic pursuits and stay connected to school. Without this resource, we would be struggling to meet the many and varied needs of our alternative students.” — Kathleen Chronister, Mountain High School Teacher Note “Having written more than 20 grants, thus considering myself an expert in the grantwriting arena, I conclude no other organization proves as generous or concerned with student learning and success as the Davis Education Foundation. In the past two years, Syracuse Junior High has been able to purchase 20 new iPads due to funds allocated by the Foundation. These iPads have gone directly into the hands of 7thgrade students, many of whom require the use of technology to be engaged in even attending school. This technology, along with the exceptional teaching skills of devoted teachers, has helped Syracuse Junior High, not only remain competitive with the iGeneration we are teaching, but has significantly raised the level of achievement of our students. The number of students failing has declined, the 7th-grade math scores were above the district and state average, and the gains in math, specifically using the ALEKS program, one that can be run on iPads, have been highlighted by the STEM Action Center located in the Governor’s office and presented to the State Legislature. All of these outstanding achievements correlate directly with the arrival of the new technology made possible by the Davis Education Foundation. The Foundation is owed a hearty, public and deeply felt, ‘Thank you,’ from the stakeholders at Syracuse Junior High. We are excited to continue to ensure student learning with your kind and substantial contributions to Syracuse Junior High.” — Megan Fairbourn, Syracuse Junior High Scholarships Bountiful High Dr. Joe Nielsen Scholarship Dr. Steven A. Child Spree For 192 children attending Davis School District schools, Child Spree was a chance to get new shoes, socks, clothes and a backpack in preparation for the start of a new school year. Child Spree is funded by the Davis Education Foundation and offers families nominated by school principals a chance to apply for a free shopping spree, where $125 is spent on each child. Those invited to participate were chosen by their respective principals from schools in the Davis School District. Before the shopping began, each student was paired with an adult volunteer. The volunteers helped each student choose basic necessities such as shoes, socks, clothing, and a backpack. This year, the Child Spree had more than 215 volunteers, many of whom are Davis School District employees. Davis Education Foundation raised $23,259 for this year’s Child Spree Community Events Stuff the Bus Many of our schools and students are in need of school supplies. Students pledged to read five books and had the chance to meet two of their favorite authors: Chad Morris and B.K. Bostick. The authors signed books, the Easter bunny came for a visit, and there were games and prizes galore. Young Buick donated $5 for each reading pledge, for a total donation of $5,000. STEM Exposition At the STEM Exposition held in the Davis Conference Center in Layton, students from 16 high schools found out how math and science translate to real-world opportunities. The expo was open to students from the Weber, Davis, Morgan and Ogden school districts as an introduction to local companies that specialize in transportation, software development, biomedical technology, resource management, energy and other STEM-related occupations. In addition to meeting potential employers in the convention hall, students also attended three elective presentations from a list of local businesses and agencies that use STEM, such as GPS wildlife tracking or computer animation. The Davis Education Foundation raised the funds for this event in the amount of $25,000. Man of Stihl Croft Sales and Service created the Man of STIHL bike ride and proceeds of $5000 were donated to support the Davis Education Foundation. The opportunity to help in the important work of educating our youth is one that is both fulfilling and will deliver long term societal benefits to our community. As Benjamin Franklin said, ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The critical work the Davis Education Foundation does allows our community to make this important investment in our children’s education. This investment has and will continue to pay massive dividends not only in our local communities but around the world as our educated and prepared youth touch the lives of the people around the world. If you have not participated in this great work there is no better time than now to get involved. With so many different ways to get involved including volunteer hours, hosting an educational event, sponsoring programs, hosting a fundraiser, participating in network events, and making a monetary contribution there is room for every community member to get involved and participate. Please come and help us invest in our students and educators to ensure a brighter future for our children and community by inspiring each child to succeed.” — Oliver Young Sales and Marketing Director Young Automotive Group 45 East State Street PO Box 588 Farmington, Utah 84025 801.402.GIVE (4483) Office 801.402.5218 daviseducationfoundation.org
