l 1 Windmills in Baerl The two restored windmills from the first half of the last century and the village church in Baerl (b.c.1200) contribute to the village charm of this rural suburb to the north of Duisburg. In the Baerler Busch woodlands and the nearby Lohheide Lake there are 6 Ruhrort Harbour District For centuries navigation has played an outstanding role in the history of Ruhrort, a district sited at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Ruhr. Even today this is still evident. At the so-called Hafenmund (harbour mouth) lies the Schifferbörse - now a restaurant - where for many decades freight and towing business was conducted between ship-owners and shipping agents. If you walk along the towpath beside the harbour basin and past the water-level indicator you will come to the Mühlenweide, a large area of meadowland used for occasional springtime harbour concerts. l Rhe in Places of interest outside the city centre Köhler-Osbahr coin and antique collection. The museum is housed in one of the former grain mills alongside the inner harbour. The permanent collection is augmented by numerous specialised exhibitions of a cultural and historical nature. The Mercator Treasury provides a comprehensive review of Gerhard Mercator’s widely diverse works. Included in its exhibits are astronomical instruments designed by Mercator, a large number of famous maps and a pair of precious globes, the Globe of the Earth (1541) and the Globe of the Heavens (1551). The Königsberg Town Museum is 2 Autofähre 4 1 3 13 integrated into the Cultural and Local History Museum. It furnishes insights into the art, history, science and poetry of Duisburg's twin town of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, and part of Russia). 3 2 Nature Reserve at Walsum Walsum, whose origin can be traced back to Carolingian times, is characterised by the extensive mining and industrial sites in its immediate proximity, and by the quiet beauty of the nature reserve bordering the Rhine. Hamborn is the number one address in Europe for steel as this is the site of the largest blast furnace in the world, operated by ThyssenKrupp. (For tours, ask at the Tourist Information Duisburg ). Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord The power-packed park! A 42 motorway, Exit Duisburg-Neumühl. Head right for the blast furnace. The harbour which can accommodate river-going vessels up to 4,500 tons has a unique advantage over its rivals, in that it provides the best possible links to water, rail and road communications and even has access to air traffic. The best way to experience the inland harbour is by taking a boat trip on one of the boats belonging to the Weisse Flotte (see highlight 4). 8 The Village of Friemersheim Friemersheim is situated in the district of Rheinhausen. The traditional charm of the Lower Rhine has been retained in the tree-lined village square, the village church, the village inn and the old school house 4 Niederrhein-Therme Mattlerbusch Park is one of Duisburg's "green lungs". People come here from all over the area to relax in its major attraction the Niederrhein Looking for fun? Looking for action? Two steam-driven lifts in the towers regulated the difference in height between the railway line on the bank and the ferry on the Rhine. The ferry tower was in operation from 1856 to 1907. The pedestrian bridge to the marina is extraordinarily flexible. Within the space of six minutes it can be arched Rh ein A walk round the water's edge takes around 90 minutes. In addition to the almost complete collection of the works of the Duisburg sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881-1919) this museum also displays a unique collection of international sculptures of the classical Modern period and post 1945 (over 300 sculptures and other items). Other collections are devoted to the German painters between 1900 and 1960, and to international graphic works. The Garten der Erinnerung (Garden of Remembrance) in the Altstadtpark (Old Town Park) near the Jewish Community Centre is the work of the Israeli artist Dani Karavan. Amongst the items to be found in the late Gothic Salvatorkirche (Church of our Saviour) (13161415), which was built on the foundations of a Roman basilica, are the memorial slabs of the universal scholar and cartographer Gerhard Mercator (15121594) and the first rector of Duisburg’s historical university, Prof. theol. Johannes Clauberg (1622-1665). The Mercator memorial in front of the Town hall also recalls Duisburg's worldfamous citizen. The Old Market Archaeological Zone containing the 16th century foundations of the market hall, which have been reconstructed since their excavation, are behind the imposing Town hall which dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Text boards, profiles and items uncovered in the excavations give visitors an idea of how the city developed. 8 Duisport, Europe's largest inland harbour, is 250 kilometres away from the coast. A trip around the harbour is undoubtedly one of the city's main attractions. It shows the technical evolution from dug-out canoes, via cargo sailing ships to barges and tugs and gives visitors an insight into the life of riverboat people and dock workers. Thematically grouped models, exhibits, photographs and texts give a lively impression of towing and passenger services on the Rhine, and of navigation on other waterways of the world. The museum ships Oscar Huber (a side-wheel steam tug built in 1921/22) and Minden (a steam-bucket dredger, 1882), are anchored a few minutes away at the harbour entrance and are open to museum ticket-holders.
