But even in progressive communities like ours, there’s still much work to be done. There are more than 45,000 homeless animals that enter San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition (SDAWC) shelters each year. Of these animals, nearly 3,000 were euthanized in coalition shelters last year due to treatable or manageable illnesses or behavior. We want to get that number to zero, and we’ve made it the San President Gary L. Weitzman, DVM, MPH, CAWA Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s foremost goal to get there. Senior Staff Renee Harris, Executive Vice President, Community Animal Welfare every adoptable animal in SDAWC shelters. To get there, we’re targeting four key areas: Kim Shannon, CAWA, Chief Operating Officer/SVP specifically targeting certain regions by providing affordable or even free spay/neuters Shelly Stuart, CSPG, CFRE, CAWA, Chief Development Officer/SVP in the areas that need it most. Kelly Riseley, Chief Financial Officer/SVP Trish Wagner, SPHR, Vice President, People Development We call this the Treatable Pet Initiative, and together we can save the life of Spay/Neuter: We’re offering needs-based spay/neuter surgeries to the community – Transport: We’ve made a commitment to transporting animals from shelters that simply don’t have the space or resources to care for additional animals. The Humane Society offers San Diegans a wide range of programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty/neglect, provide medical care and educate the community on the humane treatment of animals. As one of San Diego’s oldest nonprofit organizations, the Humane Society has campuses in both San Diego and Oceanside, as well as an adoption center inside the El Cajon Petco store. Adoptions/Admissions: We’re increasing the number of incoming and outgoing community. Reaching More Animals: We pledge to do everything possible to keep animals in their homes. By providing needed emergency veterinary care, an expanded pet food bank, new vaccination clinics, needed pet supplies and other resources to keep animals and their owners together during times of financial or other hardships. With more than 45,000 homeless animals entering our shelters each year, the Treatable Pet Initiative requires significant resources to provide the medical care, behavioral rehabilitation, and ongoing care that each of these animals need. We can’t do it alone. This is a community initiative which involves collaboration, and the support of donors like you. Together, we believe we can achieve our foremost goal of “Getting to Zero,” even if it’s one animal at a time. Warmly, Gary Weitzman, DVM, MPH, CAWA President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman has a weekly radio program called “The Animal House” on KPBS 89.5. We adopted the outgoing and effervescent 1+ year-old tortie that we named Layla and the extremely shy but sweet 1+ year-old solid black kitty that we named Keys. They have adjusted marvelously to our home and each other. They play, wrestle, and chase each other, all in good fun. They keep us abundantly amused every day! They have brought us so much joy and have really made our house a home. We cannot imagine life without them! Thank you so much for all the good work you do!” Sincerely, Sheila & Eddie M. M ore than 5,000 two-legged and 2,000 fourlegged friends took part in the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s 19th annual Walk for Animals on Saturday, May 4th. The Pawsitively Patriotic-themed Walk was held for the first time at the NTC Park in Liberty Station, the site of the historic Naval training grounds. The two mile Walk celebrated our love for animals while raising crucial funds that will help to ensure that every homeless animal in our community can find a loving home. Those who attended enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast courtesy of Phil’s BBQ and were able to browse Vendor Village, where an array of goods were available for purchase. After breakfast, Leash Your Fitness spokeswoman, Dawn Celapino, led the walkers in a relaxing stretch to limber up. Many guests also participated in the funfilled doggie activities and contests. A special thanks goes to Pamela Howe from KPRI 102.1 and Dave Mason from Walrus 105.7 FM for being the event emcees. This year’s walk raised $ 435,000, which will go towards ensuring that the 10,000 animals estimated to come through our doors in the next year are well supported in their quest to find a perfect family to call their own. The purpose of this program is to rehabilitate dogs and cats who may display fearful, shy, timid, defensive behavior, or high levels of arousal while in the shelter-setting. Our goal is to develop, implement and analyze behavior training and modification programs to meet each individual animal’s needs. This program will enrich the lives of the animals in our care and ensure successful placement once adopted. Photos: Jenna Dawsey Healing of the Heart Back in April 2013, we received a call from the San Diego County Department of Animal Services. They adored Krissy, a cat with a severe skin condition, so they asked if her unique condition was something we could treat. Krissy’s hind legs had extensive skin and tendon damage, which required multiple skin graphs and amputation of one of her legs. We are fortunate to have a wonderful medical team on staff that was s able to treat her. Her spirit never wavered and she was ready for adoption just one month later. Her new adopters spotted her on our website and once they visited her, they knew she was the one! “Krissy has so much love in her heart and spirit in her personality; it is truly inspiring what she has endured with such courage and perseverance, with the help and support of the San Diego Humane Society. Tripod cats are very special beings who seem to be completely unphased by any perceived disability. It is a joy to have her as part of our family. We can’t imagine life without her.” 6 www.sdhumane.org AnimalFare • Fall/Winter 2013 Photo: Brianne Miller s Dog Days of Summer! FOSTERING NEW BEGINNINGS Short-Ter m Stays with Foster Parents Make a Long-Ter m Difference for Animals The San Diego Humane Society’s Foster Care Program is a nurturing, rehabilitating and often life-saving service for baby animals, mothers with litters, animals with minor medical needs or other animals in need of extra-special time and attention. Foster care allows us to impact even more animals by opening up space in the shelter, ultimately helping the organization reach its goal “Getting to Zero,” an initiative to save the life of every adoptable animal in our area shelters, thus helping to ensure that San Diego remains one of the very best cities to own and – perhaps most importantly – to be a pet. We provide Foster Volunteers with: • All necessary training, supplies and support • Flexible scheduling: You can foster for as little as a day, a weekend, or a week at a time. If you’re interested in being a foster parent, please email [email protected]. TRANSFORMING LIVES I n between the cushions of an old piece of furniture discarded in an alley, a tiny life was struggling to survive... The orphaned kitten was only days old, and his odds for survival were not good. Then again, little Lazyboy (named, fittingly, after the furniture piece in which he was found) Lazyboy had already beaten the odds by simply surviving for as long as he had. It was clear that this kitten had some fight in him. Discovered by the San Diego County Department of Animal Services, Lazyboy was immediately transferred to our Kitten Nursery with the hopes that the aroundthe-clock care he would receive could help him through his battle for survival. In the days to follow, Lazyboy was closely monitored by the many surrogate parents he had now found in our nursery care staff, who bottle fed him every 2 hours, stimulated him the way his mother would, kept him clean and groomed, and most importantly, they provided an abundance of love. Lazyboy was able to grow 10 www.sdhumane.org healthy and strong, and the little fighter was adopted into a loving home on June 15th of this year. Sadly, neonatal kittens represent one of the largest populations of shelter animals being euthanized. Most animal welfare organizations simply do not have the necessary capabilities to care for and nurture these little lives at their most fragile life stage. We feel fortunate to be able to serve as a resource for other shelters in this capacity, and consider it our responsibility to do so. This year alone, we were able to transfer 878 kittens from other shelters to our Kitten Nursery where they received the care they needed to have a fighting chance. AnimalFare • Fall/Winter 2013 cover story This year, the San Diego Humane Society transferred in 1,596 animals from coalition partners (of which kittens represented 55%). Mia’s Sucess Story This was in addition to the 1,665 kittens who came to our facility through other sources. This year, the San Diego Humane Society transferred in 1,596 animals from coalition partners (of which kittens represented 55%). These animals were transferred to us in accordance with our Treatable Pet Initiative. Simply put, the Treatable Pet Initiative (TPI) seeks to transfer in animals who are at a high risk for euthanasia in other shelters, with an emphasis on animals that have medical or behavioral issues, or underage kittens. We’re able to take these animals Mia was found as a stray, a brand-new mother because of programs like our newly dedicated Behavior nursing her three puppies on the streets of Center, which will help animals displaying minor behavioral Ensenada. Given the urgency of the situation, the unknown variables and the immediate medical care that Brownie required, the level of care needed was simply outside the scope of what most shelters can provide. Brownie Because of this, we took Brownie in without question and prepared him for surgery that very night. Within 3 weeks, Brownie was recovered and adopted into a loving home. We’re all connected. This is at the heart of what it means to be a community. It can be easy to lose sight of that in this highly competitive world, but if we truly want to inspire dramatic change, we can’t expect to get very far unless we work together. We know that our goal of saving the life of every treatable animal in San Diego coalition shelters is possible, but only if we commit to reaching out and working together for the sake of the animals…and it’s only by working together that we can make this a reality. Parisian Fur Ball Gala Raises $330,000 for the Animals T op hats and tailcoats were all the rage at the 27th annual Fur Ball Gala. This year’s celebration amassed 650 people and 300 dogs at San Diego’s only dogfriendly, black-tie gala on Saturday, August 17th. Guests celebrated their Parisian style with dancing and live music, and both two-legged and four-legged guests donned their black-tie finery. An elegant dinner of French cuisine was accompanied by a robust silent and live auction and guests danced the night away under a starry summer sky – it was a night to remember for all. The event netted $330,000 to support the animals of our community and the programs and services provided by the San Diego Humane Society. The evening honored Paul E. Jolly, Founder and Executive Director of the Petco Foundation for his unwavering support animals, not just in our own backyard, but around the world. Las Patronas awarded the San Diego Humane Society with a generous grant that was used to purchase a new medical scanning device for our North Campus Veterinary Hospital. The previous scanning device had begun acting erratically, and its impending breakdown would have threatened our ability to effectively treat sick and injured animals in North County. The grant award from Las Patronas allowed for the immediate purchase of a new medical scanning device, which gave our North Campus Veterinary Hospital a fully functioning X-Ray system, without interruption. Support from Las Patronas has positively impacted our Veterinary Medicine Department. As we work to save the lives of all treatable animals in San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition shelters, it is essential that our veterinary hospitals maintain the fully functional medical equipment needed to care for each and every treatable animal. Thanks to the generosity of Las Patronas, this replacement equipment enables us to be more efficient with our time and veterinary resources, which will help accomplish the lifesaving goals associated with our “Getting to Zero” campaign. We are so thankful to all at Las Patronas for their loyal support of the San Diego Humane Society and for this extraordinary gift which will touch animal lives for many years to come.
