breezes are so cool, we could
sleep with the windows open
so we could hear the ocean.
They say the volcanoes are not
active, but early one morning
I was awakened by this terrible
rumble and the sharp “beep
beep” sound of a warning signal. My heart leaped, my mind
raced over the possibility of
lava flow and flying, white-hot
debris. The rumble and “beep,
beep” grew louder.
“Where’s my asbestos hula
skirt,” I cried.
False alarm. It was a garbage
truck backing up.
The first few days are an adjustment period. Day one is
spent coming to the realization
that you can’t get tanned that
quickly in the tropics. Day two
is spent realizing that everybody will recommend aloe
vera gel to cure your sunburn.
The next few days are passed
more pleasantly, doing only
two things — staying out of
the sun for which you have
paid so dearly … and peeling.
After I got toughened up, I
hauled my bronzed body out
to the ocean and threw it in the
water. The ocean promptly
threw it back on the beach,
along with my snorkeling gear,
somebody’s surfboard, and
two surprised Norwegians
from Minnesota.
It must have been the beach
where they film the opening
scene for Hawaii 5-O. I think
5-O is a scoring system and the
ocean was winning.
After I got past the waves on
the beach, things calmed down
a bit and I snorkeled to a
nearby reef teeming with animal life. I got out of there
quick. I can’t stand being
around that many college kids.
I get depressed around that
many flat bellies.
The thing I noticed most
about the reef snorkeling was
that there were eels that would
suddenly appear from underwater caves or holes in the
reef. Some of them were as big
as your arm and six feet long.
They say they are not aggressive unless you start something
first. My greatest fear was that
I might accidentally hit one
with a flipper or back into a
family of them getting ready
to have supper.
If any of you folks are planning a trip to Maui and think
you might go snorkeling, I’ve
got a great idea you should
consider. They laughed me out
of the dive shop, but I don’t
care. It still makes sense to
have a facemask with a rearview mirror.

was two percent more than a
year ago at 33,866 metric tons.
The following figures are in

Canada was the major contributor at 10,645, followed by

562, Nicaragua 561, Mexico
556, and Costa Rica 161.
Fresh beef imports were
21,662, led by Australia with
7435, New Zealand 4759,
Uruguay 4576, Canada 3923,
Nicaragua 561, Mexico 223,
and Costa Rica 161.
Processed beef was 2483,
including Brazil 1498, Argentina 562, Canada 202, Uruguay 118, Australia 60, and
New Zealand 39. Veal imports
were 333, with Canada 284, New
Zealand 32 and Australia 17.
Fresh pork supplies were
5503, including Canada 4581,
Denmark 774 and Mexico 34.

“To allow the Lidocaine to take effect.”
Dr. Voss looked at him blankly. “No, so you can quit your shaking
Long enough to go ahead and testisect!”
Lest you think this macho culture is confined to men alone
I remind you lady vets now rule the world
And a veterinary practice that might specialize in equine
Can easily be run by boys or girls.
And I can personally attest that cutting horses standing
Is a gender-neutral practice in vet med.
Cause last weekend Doctor Nancy examined my old pony
And I saw the ceiling fan scars on her head!
