GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends:
As we begin the New Year, I hope you and your families had a happy holiday season. I wish each of you
a very happy and prosperous 2002. The past year was an extraordinary year with the events of September
11 forever etched into our minds. But, as we move on we can be thankful to be living in a free country
that has been so blessed by God. I pray that each of you have a feeling of pride in our country and
thankfulness for our blessings.
We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of Mayor Hal Kiser Plonk who died on December
29, 2001 after a two-year battle with leukemia. Mr. Plonk had been Mayor of Goldsboro for 22 years,
from 1979-2001. He was the longest seated mayor in the state of North Carolina. He was known as a
friend to all and his contributions to the growth and development of Goldsboro will not be forgotten.
Those of you not attending the Annual Meeting and Workshop of the North Carolina Genealogical
Society in November missed a treat. The workshops were exceptional this year with several outstanding
speakers presenting topics about migration to and from North Carolina. I would encourage you to use the
educational opportunities provided by the state society to assist you in your research. You can obtain
additional information on this valuable resource by writing to the North Carolina Genealogical Society,
P. O. Box 1492, Raleigh, NC 27602 or going to web page http//www.ncgenealogy.org.
The Constitution and Bylaws Committee met on November 19, 2001 and began a review of the Society's
governing documents. It is still unclear if the original documents were ever revised and if so, where the
revised documents are located. Assuming none can be found the committee will work from the original
ones, which is very much outdated, and offer recommended changes to them. The committee will
continue its work on the constitution and bylaws at a meeting in January.
The next meeting of the Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society will be held on Saturday, January 26,
2002 at the Western Sizzlin at the comer of Berkeley Boulevard and East Ash Street in Goldsboro.
Mr. Maury York will be the guest speaker. Mr. York is in charge of the North Carolina Collection at
East Carolina University in Greenville. Please come and bring a friend.
Sincerely,
Billy Herring, President

BASS / COOK / SIMPSON
Seeking information on Martha SIMPSON (b. 1872) m. John Henry BASS (b. 1863). Also
seeking info on Julie COOK (b. 1851) who married Simon BASS (b. 1847). They were
divorced after my grandfather Henry (b. 1876) was born. These are my great grandparents.

COWARD/COW ART / ROBERTS
Seeking others researching the COWARD/COW ART line. I am particularly interested in
Edward COWARD (b. 1726 Bertie Co, NC, d. 1788 Greene Co, NC) who married Dorcas
ROBERTS. I am also interested in their son, Ephraim (b. 1756 Dobbs Co, NC) and his spouse
and children.

TUCKER
Trying to find proof of the parents and siblings of my 3rd great grandfather, Henry TUCKER (b.
ca 1769 probably in NC, but place unknown). Henry married Mary GRANT (b. ca. 1769) of
Lenoir County, NC around 1795 and they had three children - Kinchen TUCKER (b. ca 1799),
Piersey TUCKER (b. ca 1800-1810) and Sarah Ann TUCKER (b. ca 1800-1810). By 1790
Mary's mother, also named Mary Grant and a widow, had moved with her family to Washington
Co, VA. Henry and Mary TUCKER also moved to Washington Co, VA by 1800. Henry lived
in Dobbs Co. with his parents (and possible siblings) at the time he married, but I have been
unable to find marriage, land or probate records naming Henry and/or his parents directly. The
only TUCKERS of the right place and time to be possible father's for Henry were John
TUCKER or Thomas TUCKER who owned land in the area from the 1760's on, near the
Grant's property. Any help will be appreciated.

WOOTEN
Have traced my ancestor to Robert WOOTEN (b. 20 Nov 1787 or 1790, Dobbs Co, NC). He
was in Lenoir County for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census. He went to Mississippi after that. I
believe Robert to be the son of Shadrack WOOTEN (b. ca 1756, d. 12 Apr 1812 Columbus Co.
NC) and Elizabeth ALLEN. Seeking proof of this relationship for a DAR application.

OLD DOBBS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Minutes from meeting on October 27, 2001
The Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society met on October 27 at the Western Sizzlin' Steak
House in Goldsboro, NC. The meeting was called to order by Billy Herring. There were 21
members and 3 guests in attendance. Elliott Futrell gave the invocation after which we repeated
the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes from the July meeting were read and approved and the
treasurer's report was accepted with a balance of $7,504.51.
For old business, the committee indexing Old Dobbs newsletters reported that they are making
progress.
Elliott Futrell requested that anyone who would be interested in indexing the cemetery book to
please get in touch with him. Ann Humphries volunteered to show someone how to do the
indexing with the computer. Laura Alley and Cathy Blow will be in touch with her.
The Bylaws and Constitution Committee will meet on November 19 to review and recommend
any changes that need to be made.
For new business, Laura Alley requested comments regarding the Surname Index. The new form
containing columns for the ancestor's first and last names, spouse, and dates will be in the next
newsletter.
Johnny Joyner, a historian at the Charles B. Aycock birthplace, was our speaker. His program
consisted of highlights of NC's firsts, interests, and outstanding citizens, past and present. He
also included a brief statement about many of the historical sites in North Carolina. After
comments and questions by the audience, the meeting was adjourned.

SURNAME INDEX - We will again be doing a surname index for our membership (dues paid
for 2002). As in the past, this index will contain the complete name of the ancestor and his or
her spouse. A form for submitting your surname information is attached to the back of the
newsletter. Please complete the form and return it to the society as soon as possible.
Please fill out the form legibly. Please do not include more than one name per block (ancestor or
spouse), as only one name will be used. If you wish to show an ancestor with two different
spouses, then please use two separate entries (rows).
The Surname Index is not limited to the Dobbs County area. You can submit information in
other North Carolina counties or other states. However, please remember that space is limited.
Each member is allowed 10 entries. If you have a joint membership (husband and wife), then
you will be allowed a total of 20 entries (10 each). Should you have any questions about
completing the form, you can contact Laura Alley at [email protected].

GREETINGS FROM lItp^R|gl^ENT
Dear Friends:
Spring is around the corner and will provide more opportunities to get out and work on the cemetery
project. Both Elliott Futrell and myself have been unable to devote as much time on the project during
the past year because of other pressing commitments. Cathy Blow and others have stepped forward and
have taken up some of the slack. We are very appeciative of that. Anyone that is interested in helping
with the cemetery survey please contact Cathy or Elliott.
On behalf of the entire Old Dobbs membership, I would like to offer condolences to the family of Ima E.
Mewbom. She died on February 5, 2002 following a period of ill health. Miss Mewborn was a longtime
member of the Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society. Much of her life was devoted to the interest of
geneaology where she contributed a great deal of her time and resources helping others research their
family lines. She was also a member of several other genealogical societies including the Daughters of
the American Revolution.
Congratulations to Laura Alley on receiving the prestigious Joe. M. McLaurin Newsletter Award for her
outstanding work as editor of "Old Dobbs Trail", our society's newsletter. We also thank her for her
contribution of hardwork and dedication in making the newsletter great and informative. Congratulations
also to 1st Vice President, Lisa Corbett, who was recently named the Goldsboro Business Woman of the
Year. She will compete nationally for the American Business Woman of the Year award.
The April 27th meeting will be the last meeting to be held at the Western Sizzlin. When the initial
arrangements were set up with the Western Sizzlin some years ago, the agreement was that the Society
would guarantee a minimum of 40 diners. We have been falling far short of that number, therefore we
have been asked to look for other accommodations. The July 27th meeting will be held in the Weil
Auditorium at the Wayne County Public Library. The meeting time will be discussed at the upcoming
meeting.
The next meeting of the Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society will be held on Saturday April 27, 2002
at the Western Sizzlin at the comer of Berkeley Boulevard and East ash Street in Goldsboro. Please make
plans to attend this important meeting. The revised constitution and bylaws, which are printed in this
edition of the newsletter for your review, will be voted on at this meeting. Jerome Tew, the Director of
the Family History Center in Goldsboro, will give a presentation on the Family History Center and what it
can do to help with your genealogical research.

WHITE / WIGGS
Seeking information on George and Millie (WIGGS) WHITE of Greene Co., NC, likely home
near Browntown, off Wheat Swamp, bordering Lenoir Co. Millie was the daughter of John
WIGGS, sister of Susannah WIGGS, of Wayne Co., NC. George was the brother of my
ancestor, William WHITE of Edgecombe Co., now Wilson Co., NC I believe. John WHITE of
Beaufort Co., NC was their father. William got his land from James COBB who had land on
Contentnea Creek, as well as in Onslow Co. William also had in 1779 land on the North Side of
the Trent River in Lenoir County before the move to (now) Wilson Co. in 1780-1783. Wish to
correspond with anyone with the above connections.

were 15 members and 3 guests in attendance. Barbara Lancaster gave the invocation after which
we repeated the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes from the October meeting were approved as
printed in the newsletter and the treasurer's report was accepted with a balance of $8,144.93.

helping survey cemeteries should contact Cathy Blow or Elliott Futrell.

GOLDSBORO NEWS, Goldsboro, NC
Wednesday, November 24,1869
Fatal Accident. — Mr. Chas. Casey, a train hand on the Wilmington and Weldon Rail Road,
met with a terrible death, on Thursday night last, near the depot, in our town. It seems that the
engineer of the extra train from Wilmington was backing his engine, when the unfortunate man
attempted to climb up on the tender, and in the rear of it, but missing his footing, fell on the track
and was crushed in a most shocking manner. He died instantly, both legs being cut off, and his
body torn to pieces. No blame is attached to the engineer.

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,
:,T:^
LA
i Y.
VTAi
We are well into summer now and I hope this has given you the opportunity to get out and
traipse through some cemeteries in your search for long lost relatives. If you enjoy being
outside, volunteers are still needed for the cemetery abstraction project. We have recently
implemented a team concept for the project. A team leader has been assigned for all the
townships and will be responsible for the work in their assigned areas. They will need help. If
you would like to volunteer for a particular township, contact Cathy Blow at 735-1089 and she
will direct you to the appropriate team leader. I especially want to thank Cathy for her great
effort with the cemetery project and for developing and organizing the team concept.
Member participation is the catalyst that drives any organization. I would encourage each of you
to attend the meetings and enjoy the great programs and fellowship that is available there.
Membership recruitment should also be a priority of ours. Invite your friends and family
members to become "Old Dobbs" members.
I am pleased to announce that the revised constitution and bylaws were approved at the April 27,
2002 by member vote. I want to thanks all those who worked hard and diligently to bring our
governing documents in line with our current operating requirements.
We have a new meeting place and time. Our next meeting will be Saturday, July 27 at
10:00 a.m. in the Weil Auditorium at the Wayne County Public Library. The library is
located on the corner of Ash Street and Jackson Street in Goldsboro. Upon entering the library's
automatic door, the Weil Auditorium will be to the right. We hope you will make time to visit
the Local History Room in the library before or after the meeting. Our speaker will be Mrs.
Betty Duncan, Director of the Wayne County Museum. She will be discussing the challenges
faced by small museums. She will also have an update on the mission and goals for the Wayne
County Museum. I look forward to seeing you there.

OLD DOBBS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Minutes from meeting on April 27, 2002
The Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society met on April 27, 2002 at the Western Sizzlin" Steak House
in Goldsboro, North Carolina. President Billy Herring called the meeting to order. There were 18
members present and no guests in attendance. Charles Ellis gave the invocation after which we repeated
the Pledge of Allegiance in unison. Billy Herring read the minutes from the January 26, 2002 as printed
in the Newsletter. The minutes were approved as read. The treasurer's report was accepted with a
balance of $9,599.67.
Committee reports were given: Kathy Blow reported that cemetery volunteers were needed to be
coordinators for each township to work on the new cemetery book. Discussion was held to look into
Bladen Office Supply in Elizabethtown for print quote. Laura Alley requested that all surname index
forms be returned to her by August. There were no other committee reports.
Unfinished business: The Constitution and By-laws were discussed and presented for vote. Elliott Futrell
moved to accept them as printed. During discussion a change was recommended to Article V Section 4
of the Constitution. Elliot amended his motion to reflect the change. The motion was seconded, and
carried by majority vote. There was no other unfinished business.
New business: There was a discussion of a new meeting place. Kathy Blow made a motion to change the
meeting place to the Auditorium at the Library and the meeting time to 10:00 a.m. for July 27, 2002. The
motion was duly seconded and carried by a majority vote.
In other new business, a Library Committee was formed to work with the Wayne County Public Library
to help make the History Room a better place for researchers. Laura Alley is the chair of the committee,
with Lisa Corbett, Betty Blow, Nancy Smith and Charles Ellis serving.
It was reported the Greene County has purchased property for a museum in Snow Hill in the old post
office, and they will have a genealogy section.
Kathy Blow, second vice president and chairman of the program committee introduced the speaker,
Jerome Tew, of the Family History Center. He talked about the Revolutionary War history in our area,
and shared with us what type of resources are available at the Family History Center.
The meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
Submitted by Lisa G. Corbett, 1st vice president.

SURNAME INDEX FORMS - If you have not returned the Surname Index form that was
attached to your January 2002 newsletter, please fill it out and promptly return it to the Society.
We hope to publish the Surname Index in the early fall. If we do not receive a Surname Index
form from you, but you included a list of surnames on your membership renewal form, we will
publish those surnames with your name, mailing address and e-mail address (if available). If you
do not wish this information to be published, please let us know.
State (NC) Library's Genealogical Services - they will have by late summer the 1930
population schedules and Soundex for NC available for use at the library. However, they will be
unable to have the 1930 NC census microfilm available for interlibrary loan due to budget
constraints.
They are introducing to their Core Collection of microfilm for interlibrary loan, the Estate Papers
(unbound documents) for 21 NC counties. These will be available to North Carolina residents
through their local libraries. These records are being microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of
Utah at the State Archives. As funds permit, they hope to build on this collection to include the
estate holdings of all 100 counties. An OCLC Work Form will have to be used in requesting the
Estate Records Microfilm for interlibrary loan as the estate records have been cataloged and have
an OCLC number. The instructions for "Submitting Requests for Estate Records Loans" will
soon be available at the Interlibrary Loan Section of the State Library's web page at
http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/rsb/ILLGenealogy.htm. The library will continue to lend up to
6 reels per request for each borrower.
The following counties have been or will be microfilmed: Beaufort (1760-1949), Bertie (17301920), Burke (1776-1934), Bute (1764-1779), Carteret (1744-1957), Caswell(l772-1941),
Chatham (1771-1948), Chowan( 1728-1951), Craven (1745-1945), Cumberland (1758-1930),
Duplin (1752-1930), Edgecombe (1748-1917), Franklin (1781-1934), Gates (1765-1920),
Mecklenburg (1762-1957), Nash (1770-1909), Orange (1754-1944), Pasquotank (1712-1931),
Perquimans (1714-1930), Rowan (1753-1929), Wake (1770-1941). Please note that as of May
2002 not all county estate microfilming projects have been completed and that the State Library
has not purchased all of those which are currently available.
The microfilmed estate records for counties which filming projects have been completed may
also be ordered from your local Family History Center (Mormon Church).

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
As I draw near to the end of my term as President I want to thank you for the support that you
have given me over the past year and a half. The experience has been rewarding and I am
pleased at some of the things we have been able to achieve. My only regret is that we did not get
our first volume of Wayne County cemeteries published during this term. I do feel the project is
going in a very positive direction, especially now that we are getting more members involved
with the management and abstraction tasks associated with the project. I ask for your continued
patience. I feel the end product will be worth the wait. Among our accomplishments was the
rewriting and updating of our constitution and bylaws, which also accounts for my shorten term
as president. Our current governing document now call for our fiscal year to coincide with the
calendar year, thus the current board will leave office six months early.
However we do have an excellent and dedicated group of officers that will continue where this
board leaves off. Most of the current board members will continue in one capacity or the other.
The election of officers will occur at the October 26 meeting and I invite and encourage each of
you to come, vote and show support for the new board.
President Lisa Corbett
1st Vice President Cathy Blow
2nd Vice President Guy Potts
Recording Secretary Barbara Lancaster
Treasurer Georgia Futrell
Corresponding Secretary Laura Alley
Because of my increased involvement with the Lions Clubs organization, I have not been able to
give the Society the attention that I feel it deserves, and I do apologize for that. Hopefully, you
will let me return at some later time when I have sufficient time to do a more thorough job.
Thank you for letting me serve you. And, I also want to thank the other officers for their
cooperation and hard work in moving the Society forward. You have been great!
Our next meeting will be Saturday, October 26 at 10:00 am in the Weil Auditorium at the Wayne
County Public Library. The speaker will be Mr. Gary Barefoot, Curator of the Free Will Baptist
Historical Collection, Moye Library, Mt. Olive College. He will discuss the resources available
at the Moye library and the Free Will Baptist Collection.

1775, under Captain Jesse COBB. Every source I have found cites William COBB and Sarah
STANCIL as David COBB's parents, but no proof whatsoever. Who are William's parents?
One history book states that this William's parents were Henry COBB and Mary HARDY of
Bertie Co., N.C. Another source has this William as son of Joseph COBB and Catherine

at this time, and would most appreciate any help whatsoever! Please reply via e-mail at

OLD DOBBS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Minutes from meeting on July 27, 2002
The Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society met on July 27, 2002 in the Weil
Auditorium at the Wayne County Public Library in Goldsboro, NC. Our president, Billy
Herring, called the meeting to order, Charles Ellis offered the invocation, and the members
recited the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 22 members and 4 guests in attendance. Minutes
from the April meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter and the treasurer's report was
accepted with a balance of $9,689.32.
It was announced that the Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace is hosting an
Advanced Genealogical Workshop on August 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. Those interested should
register by August 22. Ed Morris and Jason Tomberlin from the State Archives of North Carolina
are to be the instructors. The cost is $10.00, payable the day of the workshop.
We have received a letter and questionnaire from First Flight Productions, LLC regarding
a television series entitled "Across Generations." Anyone interested in submitting their
fascinating family story should see Barbara Lancaster for a copy of the questionnaire.
The following committee reports were given:
1. Nominating committee - A new slate of officers for the next two years will be voted on by the
membership at the next meeting. The nominations are as follows:
President - Lisa Corbett
Corresponding Secretary - Laura Alley
1 st Vice President - Cathy Blow
Recording Secretary - Barbara Lancaster
2nd Vice President - Guy Potts
Treasurer - Georgia Futrell
2. Library Committee - Charles Ellis reported that the Library Committee will offer some
suggestions to the library regarding the Local History Room.
3. Cemetery Committee - Cathy Blow announced that she needed two more ' township
coordinators, one for Indian Springs and one for Brogden.
There was no unfinished business.
New business: The North Carolina Genealogical Society would like to conduct a seminar,
featuring a nationally known speaker, in our area sometime next summer. To do this, they would
need for our local society to make arrangements for the meeting place and the meal. Lisa Corbett
made a motion that the Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society make all necessary
arrangements regarding location and catering for this seminar. The motion was seconded and
carried by a majority vote. There was no further new business.
Billy Herring introduced our speaker, Betty Duncan, Director of the Wayne County
Museum. She has come to Wayne County, NC from Wayne County, Michigan by way of
California. She gave an enjoyable overview of the local museum and included its advantages,
goals, and needs.
After comments and questions from the audience, the meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be October 26, 2002 at the Weil Auditorium, Wayne County Public
Library in Goldsboro, NC.
Submitted by Barbara Lancaster, Recording Secretary
WAYNE COUNTY MUSEUM "WALL OF FAME" - Almost 200 nominations were
received and the judges have selected around 80 individuals to be included on the wall. They are
currently in the process of collecting biographies and photographs for those selected.

ELISHA UZZELL
Submitted by Rose Parks, 1723 CR 4530, Avery, TX 75554-9722
Son of Thomas (and Catherine?) Uzzell of Bertie, Dobbs and Wayne County, NC
The July -September 1994 'Olde Dobbs Trail" contains an article, "Which Elisha Uzzell" by
Betty Fisher Cox. This deals with which Elisha is the actual son of the man we will look at in
this article. Elisha is a popular name in the Uzzell Family and so it is difficult to know how they
fit. The Elisha, son of Thomas (about 1715- Oct. 1772) is not hard to define, as in this early time
in NC, he was the only Elisha in this area.
Several items I have included on the Dobbers web page
[http:www.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paday/index.htm] have been taken from others
notes and writings. I have not seen the documents quoted.
Elisha was the chain bearer in the grant his father received in Sept. 1754 between Bear Creek and
Walnut Creek. He is said to have received this land in a deed in 1757. Sadly, the old deeds of
Dobbs County are gone.
Elisha is listed as a voter in the Dobbs Co., NC list in 1769 and 1779.
Elisha Uzzell and Joshua Herring were appointed Executors in the will of Elisha's father,
Thomas in Oct. 1772,1 and the estate was not yet settled in 1785.2
Wayne County Deed Book 3, page 32: John Burley to John Anderson 10 June 1782 land on
Walnut Creek Witnesses were Elisha Uzzell, Sr., Pheribe Uzzell and Elisha Uzzell, Jr.
District 4- 1786 Wayne Co. Tax List Elisha Uzzell, Sr. 927 acres, 2 polls, and 4 slaves.
Elisha Sr. is on the Wayne Co. census in 1790 with 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16-3 females
and 5 slaves.
Elisha Uzzell may have supplied goods to the Army. This in itself qualifies him for Patriot
Service and descendants can use this to gain entry into DAR and SARI believe, but there are no

To the Sheriff of Wayne Co.: Greetings. You are hear by commanded to take the bodies of John Hanks and Simon

The many articles I have seen on Elisha Uzzell have him married to Dorcas Stanley. There is a
tombstone at Walnut Creek in Wayne County for them with Elisha Uzzell 1736-1813 and his
wife Dorcas Stanley Uzzell and others. I can not dispute that he may have been married to a
Dorcas Stanley, although she is said to be a daughter of Major Stan(d)ley and even though I have
searched records I can not find a Major Stan(d)ley, and I do not find records to prove Elisha's
marriage to Dorcas. One Dorcas Stanley did marry Jacob Herring, Jr. One fact about the
tombstone I know is incorrect is that of Elisha's death date.
His will was written 11 February 1795 and proven October court term 1798. (He has to be dead
by this time)

North Carolina State Library research staff, Joy McGee Heitmann, in response to a letter dated July 10, 2000,
"Thomas and Elisha Uzzell are not listed in the Service records, or pension records or as North Carolina militia.
They could possibly been paid for civilian service."

Ancestry.com does not show Elisha as a Soldier nor in the DAR Book.

I give and bequeath to my son James Uzzell my plantation whereon I now live on Walnut Creek
and the Land there unto belonging. Likewise one still and one Negro man named Luke and one
Negro woman named Rachel to him his heirs and assigns forever, and my will is that my two
Negroes Vis. Ben and Caleb, my land lying on Bear Creek, and all the remaining part of my
property whether within or without doors be sold and equally divided between my beloved wife
and four of my children Vis. Salley Wasdin, Polley Uzzell, Elisha Uzzell, Lucretia Smith and
Major Uzzell. {Note: He says four of his children, but lists 5 unless the Polley Uzzell has been
misread and should be Pharabe).
Lastly I do hereby nominate, appoint and ordain my two sons-in-law, Jonathan Wasdin and
Arthur Smith my executors of this my last will and testament hereby making null and void all
aforementioned wills and testaments by me made and this only to be my last will and testament
hereby ratifying and confirming the same in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fix
my seal the day and year above written. Elisha Uzzell (his signature)
Signed, Sealed, published and declared by the testator to be his Last Will and Testament in
presents of us.
Test. William Lancaster
John Smith
Joseph Strikling (His Mark)
[I do not have a copy of the original will but a transcription from the book "Uzzell Ancestry" by
Minter Uzzell.]
Many times with a second marriage and with children of both, the will may read "my now wife"
but this is not the case in this will. He treats all pretty much the same.
By the deeds above, at least James and Fereby/Pharabe are children of Elisha and Pharabe.
