SMART Software v10
Using the SMART Board:
To start the SMART Board:
Make sure the SMART Software is loaded onto the PC or laptop which is connected to the SMART
Board. SMART Software can be downloaded free of charge at
www.smarttech.com/support/software/index.asp
Turn on the computer and projector. The SMART Board draws power from the computer and will be
activated automatically – you do not need to turn it on or off.
Log on, if required, using the computer keyboard.
Help Button
If the pen tray features a Help Button (circular button below the easer), press it to
launch the Help and Support for Your Interactive Whiteboard dialog box.
Align/Orient the SMART
Board (see next section).
Help Centre: press to be
taken to SMART’s online
help website.
Technical Support: press
to be taken to the tech
support dialog box.
Here you will find all the
information you need for
contacting SMART’s
technical support.
Controlling Projected Applications:
Touch the SMART Board to control applications with your finger in the same way
you would control an application with your mouse at your desktop computer.
One touch of your finger equals one click of a left mouse button. To double-click,
double-tap on the SMART Board.
To right-click, look at the two buttons located at the front of the Pen Tray TM. The
right one is the right mouse-click button. Press the button, and your first touch
(only) on the SMART Board will bring up a right mouse-click menu. Your next
touch will return to a left mouse-click position.

SMART Software v10
Orienting the SMART Board:
When starting up the SMART Board, take a moment to check the orientation by
touching the SMART Board in the corners and centre to see if the cursor is meeting
the tip of your finger where it touches the SMART Board.
If the cursor is not meeting your fingertip, you will need to Orient the SMART Board.
The SMART Board Driver should already be running in the Windows Notification
Area (see first section).
Touch the SMART Board Tools icon. The SMART Board Tools menu will appear.
Touch to select Orient. Another method of launching the Orientation Screen is to
press and hold the keyboard and right mouse button on the front of the Pen Tray
TM simultaneously.
What causes the SMART Board to be misaligned?
§
People pressing buttons on the projector
§
Moving the projector or SMART Board
§
Zooming in and out on the screen with the projector remote
§
‘Room Shake’ caused by: a slamming door, heavy objects moved
across the floor above. The natural sway of tall office buildings will
build up over time (6 mos. to a year)and may misalign the projected
image.
The Orientation screen will appear.
Starting in the upper left corner, use one of the pens to
press firmly on the yellow centre of each red cross in
the order they light up (top to bottom for each of the
three columns, left to right). The Orientation is based
on the release point, not where you first touch. When
you have pressed the final cross the Orientation
screen will disappear.
Note: No warning will appear if you miss the centre of
the cross. It is up to you to notice.
If you have made a mistake, push either of the
buttons located on the front of the Pen Tray TM (the
keyboard and right mouse buttons). Either button will
move to the previous cross so you can make a
correction.
If the front-projection SMART Board is on a floor stand
and/or the projector is portable (not mounted
permanently), it must be oriented every time you set it
up.
Press firmly in
the center of
each cross.
It is advisable to use a
pen instead of your
finger, as the pen has a
finer point and will give
better accuracy.

Digital Ink Layer:
Pick up a stylus from the Pen Tray TM. Once a
pen has been removed from its holder the
Digital Ink Layer will appear while on the
desktop, while using your internet browser or
when using many common applications. The
transparency layer is identified by a white
border around the outside of the screen and a
three-button toolbar in the upper right hand
corner (see next section). Use the pen to write on
top of any projected image. You will not alter
the file in any way by writing on it.
Press firmly on the SMART Board when writing.
Remember that the SMART Board will accept
only one touch at a time - only the tip of the
pen or your finger should touch the SMART
Board. You cannot rest your elbow, wrist, or the
side of your hand on the SMART Board when
writing.
When you are finished, return the stylus to the
Pen Tray TM. After returning the pen to the Pen
Tray TM your next screen

Saving Annotations from the Digital Ink Layer into Notebook:
Every time a stylus is picked up (outside Notebook, Word,
PowerPoint, or Excel), the Digital Ink Layer Toolbar will appear
in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
The Camera button will allow you to quickly capture a
snapshot of your Digital Ink Layer into Notebook.
You can also save a copy of your
Digital Ink Layer into Notebook by
returning all pens to the Pen Tray TM.
Your next screen press will launch an
on-screen menu. Select Save Ink, from
the menu to capture a copy of your
notes into Notebook.
Please note that capturing the Digital Ink Layer using the Camera button on the Digital Ink Layer Toolbar
or selecting Save Ink from the on screen menu will capture a full screen image.
If you wish to capture a specific area of the Digital Ink Layer you will need to Launch the
Capture Toolbar. Press the SMART Board Driver Icon located in the Windows Notification
area. Select Other SMART Tools > Screen Capture Toolbar from the menu.
Press the Area Capture button on the Screen Capture Toolbar (see
picture right) to take a copy of what you have written. Press in the upper
left hand corner of the item you
wish to capture. Drag to select
what part of the screen you
would like to save; everything
within the rectangle will be captured. (Notebook will
automatically start up if it was not already running).
Press the Area Capture button; then press anywhere, once only, on the screen to capture a copy of the
entire screen, including your writing, into Notebook. (Notebook will automatically start up if it was not
already running).
Remember that although the screen captures look exactly like a working computer screen, they are
only pictures. You cannot operate icons from a screen capture picture. The image containing your
annotations can now be saved in the Notebook file or cut and pasted into another application.

Ink Layer Options:
It is possible to change some of the features of the Digital Ink Layer. Pick up a
pen from the Pen Tray TM to activate the Digital Ink Layer. Once the Ink Layer
has appeared, touch the screen to bring up Ink Layer Menu. Select Ink Layer
Options… from the menu.
The Ink Layer Options Dialog
Box will appear on the screen.
Use the boxes beside each option to change the
features of the Digital Ink Layer as you wish. Deselect
Show border around Ink Layer if you do not wish the
white border to show when the Ink Layer is activated.
Removing the Allow pop-up balloon messages will
stop the Click Here to Restore Writing title from
appearing. If you wish to hide the Digital Ink Layer
toolbar, deselect the Show the Screen Capture, Clear
and Close buttons options.
Selecting Close Ink Layer with Pointer, will
automatically clear the Ink layer with your first nonpen touch (similar to the way the transparency layer
functioned in version 9.5). Always Save Ink will
automatically take a screen capture of the Digital Ink
Layer whenever the Ink Layer is closed.
Once you have made your changes, press the Ok
button. The changes will take affect once the dialog box has been closed.

Ink Aware Applications:
What is an Ink Aware Application:
Ink Aware applications allow you to write and save your notes directly into a file without using the
Notebook Software. Word, Excel and Power Point are the three most common Ink Aware Applications.
For a full list of Ink Aware applications select the Ink Aware button from the control panel on the SMART
Board.
Saving Annotations into Word and Excel:
To add annotations or text to Word or Excel, look for the SMART Aware
toolbar near the top left of the program, beneath the regular toolbars.
The Camera button will capture a picture of the active window and insert it
into Notebook as an image.
To use: annotate on the screen; then press the camera button.
Press the Insert as drawing button to save the writing in its current form and
attach it to the file as a drawing. When you put the pen down and touch
the SMART Board, your writing will not disappear. It is a separate object
which can be moved or deleted as desired.
To use: Pick up a pen, annotate on the screen; then press the Insert as
Drawing button. The image will be inserted into the document.
Note: Microsoft Word must be in Page Layout view to capture the annotations.
Press the Insert as Text button to convert the annotation to text and insert it
at the insertion point (Word) or selected cell (Excel).
To use: Place your cursor where you wish the text to appear; write anywhere
on the screen; finally press the Insert as Text button. Your handwriting will be
converted to typed text.
Note: Microsoft Word must be in Page Layout view to capture the annotations.

To run a PowerPoint presentation on the SMART Board:
Open your PowerPoint presentation as normal. When in Design Mode your presentation will function
as usual. To use the SMART Ink Aware features, select Slide Show from the View menu or press the Slide
Show icon in the bottom left.
You will need to use a Double Press to advance through your slides. To Double Press, touch the SMART
Board twice to advance the slides. Double press is directional – if you touch from left to right, the slides
will move forward; touch right to left and the slides will move backward. There is also a Navigation bar
with arrows you can use to move between slides.
You can write on your presentation at any time. If desired, save your annotation into SMART Notebook
or directly into your PowerPoint slide (see next section).
Note: If you put the stylus back in the Pen Tray without saving the annotation, your writing will disappear the next
time you touch the screen.
PowerPoint Presentation: Saving Annotations
PowerPoint must be in presentation (slideshow) mode.
Pick up a pen and write on your presentation. Remember, if you
do not save your writing it will disappear if you touch the screen
after you have returned the pen to the Pen Tray TM.
Unlike Word and Excel, when you write on the SMART Board,
the Save/Print toolbar does not appear. Instead, these functions
have been integrated into the middle button of the Presentation
Toolbar that appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the
screen.
Press the middle button on the Presentation Toolbar. A menu will
appear (right).
The first option is Saving Ink Notes. This will take a picture of the
entire screen and insert it into Notebook.
Menu items are located
in the middle button
The second option is Insert Drawing as Image. This will make
your annotation into an object that stays on the slide, which you
can cut or delete at any time in design mode. Touch to select
whichever option you prefer.
Please note: This toolbar is inactive if you are using the read-only
PowerPoint slide view.
If your writing disappears before you save (in slideshow view):
Press the middle button on the Navigation bar and select Restore Annotations from the menu. Only
the LAST set of annotations that were on the screen will be restored. After you restore your
annotations, remember to save them!

Trouble Shooting
Basic troubleshooting steps are outlined below. For more information, visit www.smarttech.com.
If the problem persists, please call Apex AVSI Technical Support at 403-255-4123.
Check this first:
1.
That SMART Board cables are properly connected to the computer and projector and both are turned on.
2.
Ensure the latest version of SMART software is installed on the computer.
3.
Make sure that the SMART Board driver has been launched.
4.
Reference the projector and SMART Board manuals.
Screen goes blank or fails to display electronic ink when a pen is lifted out of the Pen Tray:
The SMART Board driver may be having trouble interacting with the computer’s video card.
Try increasing or decreasing the colour resolution of your computer. If that doesn’t work, try downloading new
video card drivers from the manufacturer of your video card or replace the video card.
Electronic ink or cursor appear at a distance from the point where Board is pressed:
The SMART Board must be oriented correctly in order to recognize exactly where you are pressing. Try re-orienting
the SMART Board as described in the beginning of this manual.
No electronic ink displayed while writing:
First, make sure the SMART Board Tools have been launched (look for the small SMART Board icon at the bottom
right corner of the screen), and that you are running the latest version of SMART Board Software.
Next, check to make sure the light (LED) over the tool slot is illuminated when you remove the pen. If it isn’t, the
sensor window in the slot for that stylus may be dirty, blocking the beam of light that is essential for color
recognition. You should remove any dust from the sensor window inside the slot.
If the LED is illuminated, a problem may exist with the SMART Board Software or electronics. Try downloading and
installing the latest version of SMART Board Software to fix the problem. If you are already running the latest
version, contact Technical Support at Apex AVSI (403-255-4123).
If the LED is not illuminated, check all cables and wiring on both ends and make sure that power supply is 12V
and 500mAmps. If none of these actions solve the problem, call Technical Support.
Image on my screen is too large for the SMART Board:
If the image on your SMART Board is too large and can’t be reduced enough to fit using the zoom lens, or
alternatively, if the image is too small and can’t be expanded, the image resolution (number of pixels displayed)
of your projector and your computer may not match. You should also verify that the projector has been placed
correctly on the platform in the cabinet. Moving the projector closer to or farther from the Board should also be
tried.
You should first ensure that the projector is set at its optimal image resolution. Refer to your projector’s manual for
the optimal resolution of your projector and reset it if necessary. While these instructions may indicate that
resolutions other than the optimal one are permitted, do not alter the resolution to any of these other settings.
