The Estate Auction for the late Donald & Charlotte Erickson
was held on their multi-generation 380 acre farm in the Upper
Peninsula.
This farm was in the family for 100’s of years, and there were
treasures that were found in the outbuildings that were interspersed
over the 18 miles of roads on the property! We actually had a hard
time finding those treasures again after our initial visit!
We knew that this was definitely a ‘2-ring auction’ and also that we
would get to do an ‘old-fashioned-walk-around auction’ for the lumber piles
and the sawmill, at the least. We also had to consider the 10-plus outbuildings,
that consisted of horse corrals, more lumber, fencing, scrap iron, etc…

With Seventy Dealers from Across the U.S., the
Lake Country Antiques & Art Show Doesn’t Disappoint
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
The Lake Country Antiques & Art Show. Just the name excites antiques enthusiasts everywhere, for the Lake Country Shows are always among the most anticipated antiques events
in Wisconsin. The autumn edition of the show, held on the first weekend in November, featured over seventy respected dealers from throughout the nation. They gather here twice each
year at what has become known as one of the finest antiques shows in the Midwest. Quality
is always the rule here, with large crowds getting a chance to see an amazing selection of
American & Continental furniture, art, and artifacts spanning the centuries.

Article by Rick Natynski (Red Wing Collectors Society)
Collectors of Red Wing stoneware and pottery might find a new centerpiece for their collection if they
come out to the Red Wing Collectors Society's (RWCS) Annual MidWinter GetTogether at the Olympia Resort
& Conference Center in Oconomowoc, Wis. from Feb. 6-8.
The big news this year is that the event is moving to Wisconsin after being held in Iowa for the past
14 years.
“We're excited about the move to Oconomowoc because we expect it will attract a large group of collectors who have never attended the MidWinter event before,” says Stacy Wegner, RWCS executive director.
“Other than Minnesota, Wisconsin has more RWCS members than any other state, so we're hoping to see a larger attendance this year.”
The RWCS is devoted to those who collect a diverse line of crocks, jugs, churns, dinnerware and art
pottery manufactured in Red Wing from the 1880s to 1960s. Hundreds of people from around the country are
expected to attend the February event, which will help tie collectors over until the next RWCS National
Convention in Red Wing in July. These two events serve as great opportunities for members to connect over Red
Wing and learn about the history of the potteries that once operated in Red Wing, their diverse production lines
and the impact they had on the American pottery industry.
As with any large antique event, the opportunity to buy and sell is top of mind for collectors and dealers. In this case, the RWCS MidWinter GetTogether never disappoints. Many attendees will prop open their doors
and sell Red Wing wares from their hotel rooms during the weekend - some starting as early as the night of
Wednesday, Feb. 4. A formal Show & Sale will run from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 followed by an auction at 5 p.m. - both of which are open to the public. Auction proceeds will benefit the Pottery Museum of Red
Wing and more information can be found at www.houghtonauctions.com or the classifieds section at www.redwingcollectors.org. Whether you're new to collecting Red Wing or an experienced collector, anyone and everyone is invited to attend this fun event and find a new piece for their collection.
The MidWinter GetTogether also includes a number of other organized activities like a “Friday Night
Lights” reception featuring food, prizes and fun from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. The theme of this year's event
is “The Big Game”. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite football team's apparel to take part in the fun,
whether their favorite is from the professional, college or high school ranks.
Education is also a major focus of the event. Highlighting this year will be keynote presentations from
RWCS Vice President Paul Wichert and RWCS Foundation Board Member Stan Lueck. Wichert will present
“RWCS Technology & How to Use it” and Lueck will speak about creating the RWCS Foundation Endowment
Fund to keep the Pottery Museum of Red Wing running strong for future generations.
New this year, RWCS Historian Nancy Lambert will talk about the process she went through when
creating the Kansas/Missouri Red Wing advertising book. Longtime MidWinter speakers and RWCS Hall of
Fame members Steve Showers and Dennis Nygaard will give separate presentations on their findings from digging in the pottery dumps this year. Dinnerware experts Larry Roschen and Terry Moe, who are also RWCS Hall
of Fame members, will discuss Red Wing dinnerware. Curious about how things are going at the new museum
in Red Wing, Minnesota? Members of the RWCS Foundation Board will hold a Q & A session to answer your
questions. And as a carryover from the past location in Iowa, Mark Wiseman will speak about the potteries that
operated in Des Moines, Boone and Warren counties. In addition, new RWCS KidsView education program
chairperson Linda Wipperling will keep with “The Big Game” theme and feature activities that will teach
younger collectors about the different pieces Red Wing made for professional and college sports teams, such as
the Little Brown Jug trophy that is awarded to the winner of every Minnesota/Michigan college football game.
All activities will be held at the Olympia Resort & Conference Center, 1350 Royal Mile Rd. in
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, which is off I-94 just 30 minutes west of Milwaukee. Visit www.redwingcollectors.org
to register or learn more about the MidWinter GetTogether, or the annual Red Wing Collectors Society Summer
Convention, which is slated for July 9-11 in Red Wing.
The RWCS MidWinter GetTogether is one of three different antique shows that will have quality Red
Wing and vintage advertising for sale in Wisconsin's Waukesha County on the weekend of Feb 6-8. Featuring
more than 55 quality dealers, the 64th Annual Winter Wisconsin Antiques Dealers Association Show is slated for
11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Waukesha County Expo Center
Forum Building, 1000 Northview Road, Waukesha, WI 53188. Call 414-510-4441 or visit www.wisconsinantiquedealers.com for more information.
In addition, 150 sales tables will be set up at the 43rd Annual Milwaukee Antique Bottle and
Advertising Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Country Springs Hotel, 2810 Golf Road, Pewaukee,
WI 53072. Contact David Kapsos at 608-838-8041 or [email protected] for info. Gas prices are down, so
don't miss this unique opportunity to hunt for new pieces or sell your inventory at these great events!
Annual membership in the Red Wing Collectors Society costs only $35 and includes six 16-page fullcolor newsletters mailed to your home throughout the year. The Red Wing Collectors Society was founded in
1977 in Red Wing, Minn. and is devoted to educating people about all American pottery. There are more than
4,000 members worldwide. The Red Wing Potteries had diverse pottery lines that included stoneware, dinnerware and art pottery. For more information or to become a member, call the RWCS business office at 800-9777927, e-mail [email protected] or log on to www.redwingcollectors.org. You can also join the
RWCS on Facebook and follow it on Twitter at twitter.com/RWpottery.
Every year, a variety of rare
and unexpected treasures
show up for sale at the Red
Wing Collectors Society's
MidWinter GetTogether.
From primitive stoneware
made as early as the 1870s to
art pottery and dinnerware
made from the 1930s to 1960s,
these photos show a sampling
of the goodies two dealers had for sale at last year's affair. This year's
event will occur on the weekend of Feb. 6-8 at the Olympia Resort &
Conference Center, 1350 Royal Mile Rd. in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
Most dealers will start selling from their hotel rooms starting on
Thursday, Feb. 5; the official Red Wing Show & Sale will take place in
Olympia's ballroom from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Out & About
Everyone at Auction Action Antique
News would like to wish all of you a very
Happy New Year!
We hope that everyone had a wonderful
Christmas filled with family and friends.
This is our first paper back from our
holiday break. We would like to remind
our advertisers that we have new deadline
dates that took effect in January.
The new deadline is Monday’s by noon.
The paper will then be mailed on Wednesday’s.
My holiday break was a busy one. Mekenzy had early (4am)
morning practices and a tournament Christmas weekend. She
shared her goalie time with Emily, who is a freshman. So for
Kenzy’s game she got a shut-out. Brandon had games and
practices scattered throughout. Half of the family got that virus
that has been going around, including the dog. Even grandpa
(Bob) got sick. So, needless to say, we (my family) spent our
Christmas day just relaxing and watching movies. I worked a
little, so some of you did receive actual emails from me on
Christmas Day. I did watch some of the movie.
When Out and About this weekend, be sure to drive safe.

Fabulous Olympic Resort Hosts Autumn Edition of the Lake
Country Antiques & Art Show
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
There are more than 15,000 lakes in Wisconsin, and many folks think they’re found
mostly in the northern half of the state. But there’s another watery Badger State playground as well: The “Lake Country” located just a short drive west of Milwaukee in
the southeast corner of the state. And the more than one-hundred lakes found here
have attracted visitors for a long time indeed.
Increase Lapham, father of the U.S. Weather Bureau, was making pioneering
weather observations here even before Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Soon after,
Delafield’s celebrated Hawks Inn stagecoach inn opened, and the region became an
important stop for travelers in what was then still part of the Michigan Territory. And
the oldest degree granting institution in Wisconsin, Nashotah House, opened its
doors here way back in 1842.
Today’s Lake Country is best known as a vacation destination. Whether you’re a
history buff, or just want to explore the many lakes, golf courses, and fine dining
establishments in the area, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Lake Country. But
of course there’s another main attraction here: the Lake Country Antiques & Art
Show
The Lake Country Show, originally named the Delafield Antiques Show, has been
bringing the best in antiques exhibitors here for a quarter of a century. Redcoat
Antiques is always among them, bringing a fine selection of British art and furnishings. They also displayed some choice early firearms at this autumn show, including
a London-made pistol that once belonged to American privateer (and later Navy
Captain) Samuel Davison.
Americana & folk art was the theme as always at Thomas M. Rawson Antiques - a
highlight there a seven-foot-long model ship that had won a blue ribbon for its maker
at the 1929 Wisconsin State Fair. And speaking of folk art, first-time exhibitor Gary
Lake Country Antiques & Art Show organizers Ron and Debi Christman assembled more
than seventy top-quality dealers from
throughout the nation for the fall edition of
the event, held as always at the Olympic
Resort & Spa in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
John Gresl brought examples from around the globe: from African carvings to an
amazing woven hog figure made by a New Guinea tribe from twine and Cassowary
feathers.
In more of a fine art mood? Milwaukee’s Ralph Spano Antiques brings dozens of
noteworthy examples to each Delafield Antiques Show, specializing in local &
regional oils & watercolors. And with seventy dealers coming from as far afield as
Connecticut and Rhode Island to jolly old England, there’s something here for every
taste and budget.
The Lake Country Antiques & Art Show is hosted by the Olympia Resort & Spa,
located in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The venue has a lot to offer for both visitor and
exhibitor alike. There’s a generous amount of free parking, plus nearly 20,000 square
feet of exhibition space in two adjacent ballrooms. Thinking of making a weekend
out of a visit to the show? The resort also boasts 190 oversized guest rooms and
suites, gourmet dining, an in-house night club - plus the lavish 17,000 square foot
OSpa.
Ron and Debby Christman of the Antique Center at Wales did their usual great job
organizing the event. Their multi-dealer shop, The Antique Center at Wales, is worth
a look too, housed in a beautifully restored 19th century barn in nearby Wales,
Wisconsin. They can be reached at 262-968-4913, or through their website
www.antiquescenteratwales.net.
If you missed this Autumn Edition of the Lake Country Antiques & Art Show, the
Spring Edition of the event will be here before you know it, in June of 2015. Be sure
to check out the Lake Country area’s website too - www.livinglakecountry.com - for
details about what’s happening in this picturesque corner of the Badger State. And as
always, keep an eye out for all of the Lake Country Antiques & Art Shows in the
Auction Action Antique News!

Collector Excitement

Oscar Peterson plaque
2012 Gave us a wonderful opportunity
to see some gresh new items that captured the attention of all collectors.
First, one of our collectors found the
Oscar Peterson plaque on the left on
the left on eBay. No one could have
understood its character until you saw
it in person. It drew a lot of attention at
the preview & even more attention
when it finallly hit the auction block. I
found myself looking at it & then walking away & going back to absorb more
of its character. Sold for $123,000 it
commanded a value that reflected just
how special it is. I’m sure that as the
information gets out about this wonderful item we will see more of these special efforts surface. Oscar Peterson did
a wide range of items & this plaque is
certainly special.
Beckhart duck call
I can easily see Marty, Cameron or
another carver doing this type of item
for their residences, shops or hunt
spaces. I have been in several hunt
clubs that could sponsor such work.
On the right is the Beckhart duck call
that came to the show for appraisal. It
is definitely a wow. Carved on all sides
with amazing detail it is definitely a
sight to behold. It went to auction this
summer & sommanded a record bringing $103,500 in spirited bidding. Both
of these items are great examples of the
terrific American Folk Art that is still
being discovered across the country. I
hope that the call will inspire some of
the call makers & call collectors to new
levels of energy in their efforts.

the theme of this framed Villeroy &
Boch plaque from Hunters Lake

sweetgrass, and birchbark traditions in the
Northeaster Woodlands • Over 500 photographs, lively vignettes, and informed commentary portray centuries-old Native crafts • A wide range of “work” and

appreciation to a centuries-old Native American basketmaking tradition in the Northeast. Explore the full
range of vintage Indian woodsplint & sweetgrass basketry in the Northeastern U.S.

England & Canadian Maritimes, Upper New York State, and the Great Lakes.
Learn the craft’s key role in supporting many Eastern Algonquian and Iroquoian
peoples through generations of turmoil and change. Discover how today’s creative
young artisans are building upon their legacy. The book’s “Resources” section

Antiques Abbreviations
by Mike Paul
A while ago a reader asked about explaining some of the abbreviations they
encounter in auction ads. This got me thinking about the abbreviations auctioneers
use and why we use them. After a phone call to Gloria I offered to put together a listing.
By definition, an abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase used for brevity. Within context and reason it identifies certain aspects of a piece to the buyer without needlessly going into detail. A lamp buyer will know what a “bracket lamp” is.
It’s unnecessary to say, “Victorian cast iron wall bracket with mercury glass reflector, chimney & drop in finger font”. Most auctioneers use abbreviations in order to
keep the size of the ad affordable. However it can be too much of a good thing and
some of the more arcane descriptions can confuse or mislead the reader. To a person
who collects a particular category most abbreviations in that category are readily recognized. To anybody else they are probably gibberish. Even a novice farm toy buyer
won’t need a three day weekend to decipher IH, McD & JD. WWI & WWII are obvious but would most folks recognize CW (Civil War) out of context? Coins, firearms,
Hummels (152/A TMK3 UB K255 HB, anyone?) and other categories all have their
own abbreviations that often are exclusive to that field. But if you are a glassware
buyer does it really matter if you can’t translate a 28g, o/u, d-bbl, ss w/syn stock and
vr?
Some descriptions, while not technically correct, get the point across. For example
“Jewel T’, (which is short for Jewel Tea, a grocery chain) takes up less space than
“Autumn Leaf”, (a pattern name for china offered as a premium by Jewel Tea). This
may seem like a trivial difference but similar descriptions over several publications
begin to add up.
A listing that encompassed all of the collecting fields would be more of a project than
I can take on but the following abbreviations should get you through most ads for
antique auctions. If you have others you’d like to add to the list or that you’ve wondered about, please email them to me at [email protected].
A&C - Arts & Crafts. Refers to the style of furniture usually associated with early
1900s Stickley. Often but erroneously referred to as Mission or Prairie.
ABC - American Brilliant Cut. Refers to the “Brilliant” period of late 19th/early 20th
century American cut glass
B&H – Bradley & Hubbard. A manufacturer of quality lighting and decorative accessories.
B&W – Blue & White. The glaze colors used on utilitarian stoneware that was often
found in the kitchen.
CI - Cast Iron.
COP – Century Of Progress. Typically refers to souvenirs hauled back from the
Chicago World’s Fair of 1933/34. Even in the middle of the Great Depression, a lot
of Wisconsinites made the trip to see the COP.
CRS - Somebody explained this to me once, but I can’t seem to remember what they
said.

Dmg - Damage.
gl - Gallon. Typically used when advertising stoneware capacity
For Rest - For Restoration. Don’t go to the auction expecting a cream puff.
GBCF - Glass Ball Claw Foot. Describes the foot usually found on late Victorian
parlor and lamp tables.
GWTW - Gone With The Wind. A style of lamp with a matching font and top globe.
Correctly referred to as a parlor lamp but popularly known as a Gone With The
Wind, after the movie of the same name.
LRRH- Little Red Riding Hood. Typically refers to the Regal China products that
feature her.
MIB - Mint In Box. Any item, but often a toy, that is in the same condition as new
and in the original box.
MOP - Mother of Pearl. Polished nacre usually derived from mollusk shells.
Typically found in jewelry, ladies dresser articles, buttons and in the windows of
RPOG art.
NIB - New In Box. Similar to above but often assumed to be of modern production
NOS - New Old Stock. Old merchandise, often with original manufacturer’s tags and
merchant’s price tags, that has never been sold or used.
NWOT - New With Original Tags, but sometimes used as New With Out Tags. eBay
sellers are usually guilty of using this both ways. If buying online, clarify before bidding.
o/b - Outboard. An outboard motor.
OOB - Oil on Board. Art work done on a board, usually Masonite.
OOC - Oil on Canvas. Art work done on canvas.
Pre Pro - Pre Prohibition, prior to 1920. Refers specifically to alcohol related advertising.
Post Pro - Post Prohibition, after 1933. Refers specifically to alcohol related advertising.
QA - Queen Anne. Generally refers to a 1920’s or 30’s revival style exemplified by
a cabriole leg.
Repro - Reproduction. A good definition would require a separate article but you get
the idea. Occasionally people will use the slang “Repop” for repro or “Repo” which
is inaccurate and what happens to your car when Vinnie pulls up in a tow truck.
RPOG - Reverse Painted on Glass. Less common as ROG. Any item where the
design or artwork has been applied to the obverse side of the glass but typically a
lamp shade, decorative framed art or advertising items.
RPPC – Real Photo Post Card. Differentiates a post card that was printed, (developed) off your film from one that was commercially printed. These were so popular
that Kodak marketed the 3A folder specifically for the RPPC.
RR – Railroad.
RW – Red Wing. Red Wing, or less often, the several other stoneware companies that
called Red Wing, MN their home.
/s/ - Signed.
s/g - Salt Glaze. Refers to the type of glaze used on stoneware and to differentiate it
from the later, more common, zinc glaze.
TOC - Tin Over Cardboard. A type of sign made of tin wrapped over a piece of
paperboard and hung by a piece of short thread mounted to the back side of the sign.
Commonly used in the 1930’s and 40’s by brewing and other industries.
T&S- Time & Strike. Refers to clock movements. Differentiates between time only
and striking movements.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will display the world’s largest collection of bobbleheads
and bobblehead-related exhibits and be the premier source of bobblehead related
news and information online (http://www.bobbleheadhall.com) and at the Museum.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Today, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and
Museum announced its establishment and intention to locate in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will display the
world’s largest collection of bobbleheads and bobblehead-related exhibits and be
the premier source of bobblehead related news and information online
(http://www.bobbleheadhall.com) and at the Museum.
“We are very excited to bring such a unique attraction to the great city of
Milwaukee. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will be a fun
venue for collectors, fans and visitors to experience all things bobble-related,” said
Phil Sklar, the Hall of Fame and Museum’s Co-Founder and CEO. “Milwaukee is
such a unique city with a long sports history, making it a perfect location for collectors and fans around the world to gather for the ultimate bobblehead experience.”
Museum members will receive exclusive benefits including a limited edition bobblehead of the Hall’s Mascot, which will be created through a national competition.
The first 1,500 members will receive an individually numbered gold jersey edition
of the Founding Member Bobblehead, with the next 18,500 members receiving the
white jersey edition. Memberships include several perks in addition to exclusive
access to online content and unlimited Museum admission. Members will have the
honor of voting to induct the most unique bobbleheads into the Bobblehead Hall of
Fame on an annual basis.
“The excitement and membership pre-sales during the pre-launch efforts have been
tremendous, and we are excited to officially announce the National Bobblehead
Hall of Fame and Museum to the world,” said Brad Novak, the Hall of Fame and
Museum’s Co-Founder and President. “Becoming a member or helping to fund the
Museum through the Museum’s Kickstarter campaign will help us build the highest
quality Hall of Fame and Museum possible.”
The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum is still evaluating several
potential locations in Milwaukee. In addition to the Hall of Fame and Museum
space, plans include ample room for special events such as birthday parties, autograph signings, weddings and meetings and a store featuring bobbleheads and Hall
of Fame and Museum merchandise. Plans also include the Bobblehead Bar and Grill
featuring a bobblehead-themed, locally sourced menu.
“Brad and I have been collecting bobbleheads for over a decade and we look forward to sharing the world’s largest bobblehead collection as well as dozens of bobblehead-related exhibits with everyone,” said Mr. Sklar, who plans to open the physical National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum by 2016.

Florida – The Asheford Institute of Antiques (AIA), a professional-level distance learning program on antiques, collectibles and appraising???, announced at an industry trade gathering recently that it plans to open new offices in Beijing, China by 2016,
that will coincide with the school’s 50th anniversary that same year.
During a publicly issued press statement at the event, the
Institute’s Director, Charles Green, was quoted as saying that,
“The growing demand for Asian antiques, both here and abroad,
made the decision to expand in that direction relatively easy, especially when you consider the sheer numbers involved.” Insiders at
the school emphasized that industry research they had conducted, had
shown that people, regardless of geography, were hungry for as much new
information on Asian antiques as they could get - especially items coming from China.
School spokesperson, Anthony Drew, said the Institute had been contacted by a number of antique concerns in the region who were interested in a joint venture that would allow
for the expansion of the Asheford curriculum to China as well as neighboring countries. Drew
went on to say that with a burgeoning middle-class developing throughout these areas, the time
was now ripe to bring Asheford-style instruction in the field of antiques and appraising to the
far east. “After that, it was just a matter of partnering with someone we really believed could
help blend our program on antiques, collectibles and appraising with someone from that region
of the globe,” said Drew. “It’s a different world over there, and you have to be mindful of how
things operate, so we wanted to proceed cautiously.”
When asked about curriculum changes involved in rolling out the Asheford program
in China, Drew said that the Asian Course will be designed for an entirely different demographic, “It will be based on the items, products and services that are readily available to the
people of this region at the time.”
Release dates for the Asian Course are expected to coincide with the opening of the
Beijing offices, and the school’s 50th anniversary celebration sometime in 2016.
