For trim pieces aim to solve ceramic problems and in the search for the perfect flooring solution they open up a new dimension in the true Variety of trim pieces sense of the word. In this way the two-dimensional floor also receives a profile. Wall joints, stairs - corners and edges – none of these are a problem. Florentine steps make corners round. This not only enhances the visual appeal but above all adds the perfect finishing touch. Clay slab: extrusion The variety of trim pieces is made possible by a special Complex shapes such as curves and corners of production process that we specialise in at STRÖHER: Florentine steps and side pieces are difficult to press extrusion. Tunnel kiln fired Unglazed, original and robust: These are the classical characteristics of a tunnel kiln fired ceramic. However, in this short text neither the character nor the power of expression of tunnel kiln ceramic is given its due worth. Also because the special firing process assures exactly that, which is not exactly present in today’s normal industrial manufacture: Time – a lot of time to create the right properties. The tunnel kiln process takes about 36 to 48 hours. The transitions between the heating up, firing and cooling stages of the kiln run are structured carefully and given sufficient duration. It is this characteristic firing profile, which is decisive for the product’s properties. Without exception it co-determines the extraordinary colour development and extreme resilience of the ceramic. An especially homogeneous pore structure and a completely sintered and coloured throughout ceramic body bring braking strength and load bearing strength. The optimal balance of the rate of decomposition and formation reactions during the tunnel kiln firing permits this. Tunnel kilns are easy to regulate with regard to their firing temperature and kiln atmosphere. In addition what takes a long time to produce is also totally magnificent without glazing. This is because there is also enough time for the chemical colour reaction to take place during the tunnel kiln firing – time for the colour to develop. Frost resistance: Standard and reality frost res te i nce sta Comp le 25-year STRÖHER frost resistance guarantee * 25-year guarantee Seasonal changes in temperature put an outdoors ceramic floor covering to an extremely hard test. Especially In spring and autumn nights can often be frosty – but the midday sun can be very strong. So the ceramic has to withstand freeze and thaw, and even temperature fluctuations of up to 70°C between freeze and thaw. Thus careful, professional laying of the tiles is just as much a basic requirement as the frost resistance of the ceramic itself. Ceramic obtains the quality seal “frost resistant” if it conforms to the test standard DIN EN ISO10545-12. However, the test conditions necessary for this of simulated fluctuations between frostthaw cycles of +5 °C to –5 °C under laboratory conditions do not reflect reality. From our experience, for tiling and for specific product features, there are three reasons why only extruded ceramic can offer complete frost resistance long-term and not pressed fine stoneware ceramic. * STRÖHER is the only German manufacturer offering a 25-year frost resistance guarantee on all extruded products that have been correctly installed by a qualified professional tiler. Three reasons: Back surface structure Back surface: Dry pressed fine stoneware Fine stoneware tiles are formed through pressing dry granulate. As a result of the pressing, the back surface structure is nearly glass-like, which offers hardly any grip to bonding materials when laying tiles and causes them to detach more easily when subject to thermal tension. KERAPLATTE® DURO KERAPLATTE® COMBI KERAPLATTE® TERRA original extruded ceramics Back surface: Extruded stoneware tiles The naturally structured back surfaces of extruded ceramic cut from continuous damp clay slabs provide an optimal grip for bonding when laying. Water absorption The slight water absorption rate of fine stoneware tiles also means only a slight release of water. Even the smallest amount of water, which is sweated due to the tiling properties and which cannot find a natural way to disperse, will force its way out through the tiles cracking them. Pore structure When dry clay granules are pressed this gives rise to an irregular particle layout in the fine stoneware body causing cavities that store permeated water long-term. Whereas extruded ceramic has a homogenous particle structure that creates capillary channels. These capillary channels allow the permeated water to disperse in the fastest way possible, frost damage can not occur.
