President’s Letter
Please note: January’s NCA Board Meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 20th at the Northdale Park
Recreation Center. The NCA Board normally meets on the 3rd Monday of the month (except December), but the center is
closed Monday, January 19th for the Dr. Martin Luther King Federal holiday.
I encourage residents to attend the 6th Annual Seniors Crime Prevention and Safety Fair at Northdale Park
on Friday, January 9th from 9:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Topics on crime prevention and personal safety will be
covered at this free event. There will be a drop box on site for unneeded or expired prescription drugs for
safe disposal by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. In addition, you may bring sensitive papers for safe
document shredding and disposal. This event is co-sponsored by the Northdale OWLS, Hillsborough County
Sheriff’s Office and the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Dept., Northdale Park.

It is a given that appearances do impact home values. Toward that end, in 2015 the NCA will continue to pay
for the mowing of front lawns on a few vacant properties that otherwise would not be maintained. The
number has remained steady at about 6 to 7 homes per month for several years now, but we hope this will
decrease as the economy improves. The NCA strives to maintain and enhance property values in our
community through the enforcement of common sense deed restrictions. We request that deed restriction
complaints be submitted in writing either on-line from the Northdale website www.northdale.org or mailed
to us: NCA Deed Restrictions, 3853 Northdale Blvd., Box 374, Tampa, FL 33624 so that we have a record for
tracking all reported problems.
The NCA is proud to offer our residents many family-oriented programs and events which help to build good
relationships and opportunities to interact with neighbors. The Spring Community Wide Garage Sale will be
held on Saturday, March 14th (details inside). Mark your calendar for the Spring Egg Hunt at Northdale Park
on Saturday, April 4th and the Northdale Family Fun Festival & Parade on Saturday, April 11th. We thank our
many long-time festival table sponsors, participating restaurants, businesses and volunteers that make this
award-winning festival possible. The event attracts thousands of visitors to Northdale Park and funds raised
from the festival have gone toward enhancements at the park (digital signboard, new picnic tables, etc.). We
could use your help. Please contact me if you would like to be a sponsor, or could volunteer a couple hours
on festival day.

When a violation occurs a letter will be
sent to the violating homeowner with
a request to correct the problem.
After a reasonable amount of time
passes, and the problem persists, the
coordinator may contact you with the
available options. Some of these
options could include legal action
against the homeowner.
The NCA will not become involved in
conflicts between neighbors, animal
problems or landscape issues due to
drought.
All members are eligible to run for
NCA Board positions in elections
held each May. Elections for those
positions are made by the sitting
board at the monthly board meetings.

Calendar.

Cello & Piano Duo Concert

Theresa Villani, cellist: Theresa’s career as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician has
taken her along the east coast of the United States as well as to Chicago and Mexico
City. Her lush, powerful sound, rich interpretive imagination, and total immersion in
music-making create a palpable energy, captivating audiences of all ages and musical
tastes. She is active, not only in areas of classical tradi-tional and contemporary music,
but also early music, playing viola da gamba and baroque cello. In ad-dition to her seven solo and duo
CDs, the most recent being in collaboration with Anne Marie Scotto and entitled Music for Medittion
and Reflection, she has recorded a great deal of music in collaboration with Cincinnati com-poser Rick
Sowash.
Ms. Villani’s career also encompasses substantial non-classical
genres. During her years in the Washington, D.C. area, she was a
sought-after cellist for commercial recordings as well as live concerts
by iconic luminaries including Perry Como, Paul Anka, Liberace,
Englebert Humperdinck, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick, Johnny
Mathis and others. Ms. Villani was house cellist for several
Washington venues that presented musical theatre originating in
New York City, playing for long-run shows including Camelot,
Sugar Babies, The Wiz, Fiddler on the Roof, and in Tampa, Evita,
Secret Gar-den, Peter Pan, and Sunset Boulevard.
When time permits, Theresa is also a visual artist, making threedimensional wood assemblages using re-purposed materials. She has
had her works juried into international shows as well as having been
invited to do one-woman exhibits in Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.
Anne Marie Scotto, pianist: Born in San Francisco, Anne Marie was trained by Hungarian pianist Sari
Biro in San Francisco and by Patricia Michaelian in Seattle. While earning her doctorate at the
University of Washington, Scotto discovered her preference for chamber music and other collaborative
music making. She has been an active recitalist and accompanist for more than twenty years.
While living in Seattle, Scotto was a member of a quintet that premiered new music for piano, violin,
flute, clarinet and cello. When she moved to upstate New York, she became the accompanist/coach at
SUNY Geneseo where she gave as many as four to six recitals a month. For a decade, she was also the
accompanist for an active choral ensemble named Concentus, a women’s chorus that performed new
music as well as standard repertoire in Rochester and the surrounding area. In addition, during the
summer months, Scotto accompanied fully staged musicals such as The Fantastiks, Pippen, Brigadoon,
Annie, Snoopy, The Boyfriend, Li’l Abner, and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

Trash and Recycle Containers: I am unhappy to report that the largest amount of
complaints we receive from the residents is concerning the trash and recycle
containers. We have tried repeatedly to make folks aware that these containers should
be kept out of sight on non-trash collection days. The residents that file these
complaints do not want us to reveal their identity for obvious reasons but they are tired
of seeing these cans in front of their neighbors’ garage doors or visible on the side of
the home. In many cases the containers sit beside the older receptacles in plain view.
We have tried to avoid sending out violation notices on this issue alone unless it was part of
another bad condition. The rule is simple keep the containers from view on non-collection
days. We also realize that there are many instances where it is difficult to hide the
containers. Some homes do not have an easy access to a back yard fence gate. Many cannot
find space in a garage especially if you park your vehicles there. But, the bottom line is keeping
these containers out in view on non-collection days looks bad and it cannot help in maintaining a good image
to keep up property values. There is nothing worse for a particular neighborhood than driving on a street and
seeing home after home with trash containers in plain view. If you have a suggestion or another idea that you
would like to share then feel free to forward it to our website. Or if you prefer and want to remain anonymous
send something by mail to 3853 Northdale Blvd. Box #374, Tampa, FL 33624. We will review all suggestions.
Hopefully by the next newsletter this condition will improve.
Animal issues: If you are annoyed or troubled by unattended pets roaming your yard and cannot deal with the
pet owner, you can file a complaint on line at www.hillsborougcounty.org or call Animal Services at 813-7445660. The Deed Restriction Committee cannot send out a violation letter about this issue.
Architectural Review: In the past few months we have had to send violation letters out when a major change to
a property has taken place. This causes some concern and sometimes a cost to the homeowner to redo or
replace what has been done. We strongly urge when you are considering changes and are not sure, send us an
email or write to us about it. We will promptly get back to you with an answer. Most changes are approved
with little problem. Most of the time when the County is satisfied then so are we. Also be careful with a fence
replacement or addition. A fence cannot be erected beyond the house front lines. Again if there is a question
let us know beforehand.

Northdale Special Tax District
NORTHDALE SPECIAL TAX DISTRICT REPORT
Happy New Year! We hope your holidays were safe and happy and filled with special memories.
We recently reported that we are in the final stages of preparation for another wall repair
project which will address walls along Dawnview, Northdale Blvd and Northdale Extension.
Repairs are scheduled to begin in January.
On November 1st you received your annual property tax bill and it included a $130.00 line item
which is the annual assessment for the care and maintenance of Northdale’s common areas.
This assessment should not be confused with the voluntary $35.00 annual Northdale Civic
Association dues bill which you receive on or about June 1st each year.
Below are some helpful “Tips to be Green” for the New Year.
 Charge it up – save money and cut waste by purchasing rechargeable batteries instead
of single-use (alkaline) batteries.
 Put Some Miles on your Travel Mug – The next time you buy coffee or tea, bring your
own mug. You may save, but more importantly you’ll save a paper cup and cardboard
sleeve from the trash.
 Cover your Back Side – cut waste 50% by using both sides of the paper.
Set your printer default to duplex (two sides) printing.
 BYOB – Bring your own bag when you shop. Sturdy reusable bags with
handles are eco-friendly, recyclable and readily available. Keep bags in
your back seat so you won’t forget them.
 Get Rid of Bills – at least the paper….use online banking to view and pay bills instead of
receiving them in the mail.
 Plant a Mini Garden – you don’t have to live on a farm to grow your own food….a small
container such as a pot, barrel, window box or hanging basket will do. Start easy with
herbs such as parsley or chives.
 Recycle at the Beach – look for bright blue recycle containers on the beach or in the
parking lot. Toss your empty aluminum cans and plastic bottle in these handy bins when
you leave the beach or parks.
Every little bit helps to preserve our fragile eco-system. Thanks!

What is the NSTD?
The Northdale Special Taxing District is a Hillsborough
County dependent tax district. The District was originally
set-up under a State ordinance, but in 1992 was adopted
under County ordinance #92-35. The County collects the
taxes for the District and provides the ordinance or
regulations that give authority to the District. Funds are
derived from the County non-ad valorem tax of $130 per
residential unit. Residents in single family homes, along
with apartments and condominiums are assessed $130.
Also, all properties within Northdale boundaries including
businesses and other non-profit groups are taxed based on
an equitable per residential unit basis.
The District is responsible for maintaining the common
areas throughout Northdale. These areas include the main
entrances coming into Northdale, landscaping in common
areas alongside roadways and medians, neighborhood
entrances, the outer surface of the block walls and along the
roadside. The District also maintains selected lakes and
wetland areas along the main roadways in Northdale.
The District is governed by a Board of nine trustees who are
elected by the public or appointed by the Board. Board
members must be registered voters and reside in Northdale.
The trustees receive no compensation for their work. Let’s
welcome Earl Albright as a newly appointed trustee. The
Board has hired an administrator to complete many of the
day-to-day details of the district. The administrator is a subcontracted (paid) position.
Although the District does maintain the common areas in
Northdale, there are many areas that the District does not
control. The District does not maintain roads, street
lighting, street signs, or utility lines. Also, the District does
not maintain private property or enforce deed restrictions.
Deed restrictions are enforced by the Northdale Civic
Association (NCA). The District and the Civic Association
are two different and separate bodies. The District is a
public governmental body and the Civic Association is a
private association of Northdale residents. Only the Civic
Association has authority to issue deed restriction warnings.
Although separate, the District and the Civic Association
work to achieve the same goal of making Northdale a great
place to live.

What’s to Confess?*
Let’s set the scene. It’s Sunday morning and 20 Catholics at an Assisted Living Facility are attending a communion
service. We begin by confessing to Almighty God that we have sinned in our…. A 90 year old man, in a
wheelchair, interrupts; “What do I have to confess, I never leave this place?”
The man, let’s call him Bob, was serious. Good question, and not one I could easily
answer. How much trouble can these people get into? Are there speed limits for
wheelchairs? I found my answer by coming at the question from another direction.
Rather than thinking about sins of commission that break the law, it occurred to me that
sin is defined as transgressions against God and includes sins of omission. The confession
prayer we read contains the phrase; “I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my
words, in what I have done and failed to do.”
So, what does God consider a sin? Jesus was certainly not pleased with the Pharisees who outwardly obeyed
the letter of the law, but inwardly were moral vacuums; He referred to the Pharisees as “whitewashed tombs”,
beautiful on the outside but filled with dead men’s bones (Mathew 23:27). Jesus wanted followers to obey the
spirit of the law and act accordingly. What then, does Jesus ask of us; old people, young people, any age? How
do we please God and earn a seat at His table? Jesus answers this question in the gospel, Mathew 22:36-40

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your
neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Are older people, particularly those in nursing homes with frail bodies and a bleak future (on
earth), following God’s commands? My experience says yes. The spiritual strength of the people I deal with,
albeit mostly Christians, continually amazes me. Last month, ladies in separate nursing homes told me identical
stories when reminded to keep the Lord in their hearts and thank Him for their blessings. ‘They pray before
going to bed that the Lord take them if it’s their time; they are ready. The next morning they thank Jesus for
another day and for the blessings he has given them. Throughout the day they keep Jesus in their hearts.’
Neither woman complained about her situation. Amazing.
My answer to Bob centered on the Catholic readings and Homily from the prior Sunday’s Mass, which challenged
parishioners to dedicate the day to Jesus, much like Christians did years ago when liquor was not sold and
shopping malls were closed (really, I’m not making this up). The Priest said; “It’s Sunday, what can we do to

residents are blessed, in a way. The pain and anguish you are going through is brief when
compared to the life of eternity with the Lord promised to those who believe in Jesus and love
him with their entire mind and soul. Feel fortunate that you don’t have the distractions that
distract many younger people from the ultimate goal.
Is it that simple? I only need to love the Lord and love your neighbor as yourself, and …

Claywell Elementary
2015 School Year
Mrs. Kline's TV Morning Show Crew known as KIDS went on a field
trip to ABC Action News (WFTS) on December 4, 2014 to learn all
about the various jobs that a TV station has to offer. The students
were able to sit on the news set and watch a live broadcast. Special
thanks to Dan Shaffer for giving these students a tour. Additionally,
thank you to Deiah Riley and Wayne Shattuck.
USF CLICK Conference - Some Claywell students from all grade levels will be attending the annual
USF CLICK Conference meant to encourage children to become writers. This conference will be held
on February 27, 2015. Author Vicki Cobb will be presenting! Students will get to share their own
writing, listen to guest speakers, and participate in activities that develop their writing and artistic talents.
Science Carnival Night -Families are invited to our 2nd annual Science Carnival
Night on January 15, 2015. Life, Physical, and Earth Science activities will be
shared in an exciting and hands-on way. Our PTA will be holding a general
meeting at 5:30 followed by a chili cook off. A hot dog meal will be available for
purchase. In addition, students can participate in a cookie baking contest. If
you are in the Science field and are available to share your information and an
activity, please contact Deborah Kline at [email protected] by
January 9th.
Hydroponic Gardening - Students in all grade levels will begin gardening in January. Not only will
students plant, but they will nuture and then eat the "fruits" of their labor. In addition, students will
investigate with this outdoor classroom experience. Donations are needed to fund the nutrients for our
rain barrels. It cost $60 every three months. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Jenny

Sweetheart Dance - Claywell's Music, Art, & P.E. departments are holding a dance for the Claywell
families on February 5th. Money raised from this event will help each of these departments purchase
items that they are needing.
New online resource for Florida schools
The Florida Public Broadcasting System on Wednesday launched its free, searchable PBS Learning
Media Site with more than 87,000 "learning objects" -- educational images, videos, audio clips
and more -- aimed at helping children better connect to their school content.
Florida is the first state to receive access to a PBS site with all these materials customized to its own
academic standards. The Legislature paid $1 million for the customization, including a licensing fee. "It
is now live and available for use in Florida's classrooms." All you need is a web browser to access the
site on any device.

Activities include gardening, sports, crafts and fun. Registration is going on now. This program is for 5-11 year olds and
will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Youth Soccer - $25 per player
This recreational league is for children 5-12 years old on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Registration will be held

Have you visited the Carousel Bookstore? It is operated by
the Friends of the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library. If not,
you are missing out on one of the best opportunities our
local library offers.
The Carousel Bookstore is operated by volunteers selling
gently used, donated popular and collectible books. The
diversity of titles and authors is such that few visitors ever
leave without purchasing at least two or three. With current
hardcovers, paperbacks and some rare, hard-to-find
volumes, books are sold at around ten cents on the dollar if
purchased new. Some books are the sort you just will not
find in one location, nor want to part with. Aisles are well
marked with fiction and most any genre you could desire.
The funds from these sales greatly support our library
system. They provide "free to the public" adult, youth and
children's programming, purchasing of furniture, fixtures
and artwork. The monies also allow the Friends to distribute
the popular publication "Bookpage" and to beautify the site
with living plants.
A great way to promote reading to families of all ages
is to stop in. You will return!

Carrollwood Cultural Center
The first thing visitors to the Carrollwood Cultural Center usually say is, “Wow! There’s art everywhere you look.” What
they are enjoying is the result of many hours of work and the expertise of an art curator, a role that has been compared
to a movie director in that every detail of a production must be managed.
A very special person is required for this position. They must know art, be familiar with the
local art scene, conceptualize the shows, find judges, communicate with artists (not always
an easy task), organize the art intake and takedown, ensure every work is labeled, hang the
art to showcase it well, produce a reception, etc. Gainor Robe rts, the Center’s former art
curator, led and expanded the program admirably for years. (The program was created by
Mary Ellen Bitner, the Center’s first curator.) Now that Gainor has moved on, the Center is
most fortunate to have Nancy Kirkpatrick join as curator.
Nancy has been an artist and teacher since she was a child. At age five she designed her first
home (on paper): it had separate bedrooms for herself and her husband, and 15 habitats for
various animals.
Nancy loves teaching art because “it includes every other discipline, to infinity and beyond.” She is a passionate advocate
for art education. “I think our creativity is the most godlike trait we possess,” she says. Nancy believes that the current
neglect of art and cultural education will hamstring our country’s creative future. “Innovation is not taught in a vacuum …
we desperately need art education to lead us to our natural abilities … to enable someone to bring their hopes, dreams,
fears or whatever experience they want or need to communicate to fruition. ”Nancy’s mother is an artist and still teaches
art; her father is an engineer. “They raised us to create the world we want.” She considers her major strength to be her
creativity. “I have 2000 ideas a day and a few of them are good.”

Bean Productions
A Local Company with a Big Resume
Bean Productions is a small but mighty production company in the Carrollwood & Northdale area. Owner, Tammy Peralta
has been a resident of Northdale for more than 20 years. Bean Productions was established in
2005 while she was the station work on documentaries and in 2009 Bean Productions became a
full-time full-service production company. Bean has amassed more than 250 clients in Central
Florida and produces a good amount of the television commercials you see on local television.
Bean Productions is the production house for Ruth Eckerd Hall, producing all the commercials that
promote their shows. Bean also does work for ABC Action News for their clients, Elder Ford of
Tampa, Memorial Hospital, and New South Window just to name a few.
Longtime Northdale resident Mike Wiatrak works hand-inhand at Bean Productions as a freelance photographer and videographer. The
team also includes, a ssociate producer and editor Aubrey Custalow. The team
recently worked on several videos for Lockheed Martin's F-16 wing assembly line
and has produced demos for local bands by filming concerts with four cameras.
The joy of their business is that it's always something new every day. Whether it's
filming at Tropicana Field with some Tampa Bay Rays players or shooting retirees
doing water aerobics, it's a never a dull day at Bean Productions. The studio and
edit suites for Bean Productions is located at 5285 Ehrlich Road.

Courtyard Picnic Tables Coming to Northdale Park
The Northdale OWLS (Older, Wiser, Lively Seniors) is a co-ed seniors club approaching 1000 active public
members of the communities that frequent the Northdale Park & Recreation Center. The Park has an active
summer program, after-school Rec to Six program and year round athletic leagues for children and yearly special
events for all ages. In addition to those organized programs, Northdale has hundreds
of families that frequent the Park for outdoor enjoyment such as birthday parties,
pickup games, playground activities and friendly gatherings throughout the week
and on weekends.
Outdoor seating is limited. Thanks to the approval of an application
submitted by the Northdale Civic Assoc. (NCA) to the Hillsborough County
Neighborhood Mini-Grant program supplemented with NCA funds raised from sponsor fees from the Family Fun
Festival, the Park will enjoy three courtyard tables that will seat about two dozen people.
The idea started with the senior population asking for outdoor seating in the courtyard and soon the line
dancers, pickleball players, and the kids at camp also gave the “Thumbs up for Courtyard Tables”. If they work
as well as expected, more tables will likely be added as Park outdoor activities continue to grow.
This project made possible by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners
and the Hillsborough County Children’s Board.
