Dear Industry Friends,
Thank you all for attending this year’s Annual Fundraising Dinner and for
joining us to celebrate the Endowment’s achievements. I am honored to
serve as AFE Chairman, after spending eight years as a trustee, spearheading
AFE’s efforts to advance the floral industry through research, scholarships and
educational grants.
During my inaugural year as chairman, there were some exciting new ways
AFE served all segments of the floriculture and environmental horticulture
industries:

The launch of AFE’s Young Professionals Council (YPC), which consists of 21- to 35-year-old students and
professionals in the floral industry. YPC members will be using their skills to help reach other young professionals
interested in becoming leaders in the industry and provide feedback on AFE’s programs (see page 15). We
will continue placing emphasis on finding ways to attract young people to our industry and educate the next
generation of floral industry leaders with hands-on experience.
■
The “Funeral Directors and Flowers” report, which highlights funeral directors’ perspectives and consumer
preferences on sympathy flowers, and the relationship between floral retailers and funeral directors (see page 17).
■
The Del Demaree Business Internship, which is a new internship program coming in 2016 that will allow students
and recent graduates to gain practical experience from the industry’s leading floral organizations (see page 14).
Since 1961, AFE has funded more than $16 million in research and scholarships, benefiting growers, wholesalers,
retailers, allied industry organizations and the public. With its increased focus on awareness, AFE is expanding its
reach and hoping to introduce a new generation of supporters.
Our goal is and always will be to help build a stronger future for everyone involved in our wonderful industry.

Ken Tagawa, a previous AFE Trustee, established a memorial tribute
in memory of Margaret Lynch “Peggy” Leider and her son Michael
J. Leider Jr. Past AFE Chairman Jim Leider suffered the losses of his
wife and son in 2015, first with the death of Peggy who passed
away on March 23, and two months later with the death of his
and Peggy’s oldest son Michael, who died on May 24. Peggy first
met Jim at Cornell University, and was a major supporter of the
family greenhouse business, Leider’s Greenhouses – a 117-yearold greenhouse operation based in Buffalo Grove, Ill. Peggy was a member of several organizations,
including the Chicago Botanic Garden Women’s Board. She was proud that her children and
grandchildren were carrying on the family business to the fifth generation. Michael Leider graduated
from the University of Illinois with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture in 1982. He contributed to
various projects at the Chicago Botanical Gardens as a wholesale plant supplier, and most recently
sourced all of the plants for the February Orchid Show.
Ken Benjamin
The Kennicott and Van Namen families established a memorial tribute in
memory of Kenneth “Ken” Benjamin, a lifelong member of the floral industry
who passed away on December 14, 2014 at the age of 91. Benjamin started
his floral career at Amling Company wholesale florists in 1954, after holding
several advertising and marketing positions in the industry. He later served
as chairman of Cenflo which produced nine different publications, including:
Flower News, Grower’s Digest, The Flower Book and Nursery News. A fixture at
most floral industry events, he also served as an AFE trustee for many years.

Ken and Deena Altman, owners
of Altman Plants, began their
love of the industry in 1975
with what started out as an
innocent hobby. With an avid
interest in plants, their business
slowly transformed itself into a
wholesale nursery business encompassing over 1700 acres in six
states. Today, Altman Plants supplies exciting plant programs to
large retailers with point of purchase materials, sales reps to assist
with merchandising, a large distribution system that covers the
United States, and offers expertise in growing plants from cactus
to herbs, from grasses to perennials, and more.
Hortica Insurance Fund
Founded in 1887 by the Society
of American Florists (SAF), Hortica
Insurance & Employee Benefits is a

To guide and provide
mutual company dedicated solely to
the floral and horticultural industry. It is a proven partner for the industry, providing insurance and
employee benefit solutions. Hortica is proud to support the
educational and research initiatives of AFE. Hortica has been an active supporter of AFE since its inception.
Prior to AFE and SAF joining resources, AFE relocated its offices to
Hortica’s headquarters in Edwardsville, Illinois. Hortica managed
AFE’s administrative functions for four years during a period of
AFE’s restructuring and growth.
The Altman’s are highly appreciative of the field of horticulture and
enjoy giving back. They have established the Center for Applied
Horticultural Research as an effort to help the industry and they
support numerous efforts to improve education and research for
the industry. The Altman Family Scholarship is for full-time M.S. or
Ph.D. students in floriculture or horticulture with a career goal in
becoming a leading floriculture scientist, marketer and/or educator.

Company Fund
Smithers-Oasis is a leading global manufacturer and marketer of
products for the floriculture industry, sold under the company’s
three brands: Oasis Floral Products, Floralife Postharvest Products,
and Oasis Grower Solutions. The company provides solutionbased products and services to the industry from propagation
to home through growing media for the greenhouse grower;
postharvest care and handling of cut flowers and potted plants;
and floral foam products, wedding accessories, adhesives, tapes,
decorative wires, and other specialty products for floral designers.
Smithers-Oasis is dedicated to advancing the art and science
of floriculture worldwide and is committed to having a positive

floriculture industry.
Ball Horticultural Company is an
internationally renowned breeder,
producer and wholesale distributor of ornamental plants.
A family-owned business since it was founded in 1905, Ball has

AFE Named Funds
Teleflora Fund, $1 Million (2012)
Teleflora owners Stewart and Lynda Resnick established AFE’s largest undesignated named
fund to provide assistance for the industry’s most critical needs. Teleflora is the world’s largest
privately held floral wire service company.
FTD Fund, $450,000 (2013)
FTD, in Downers Grove, Ill., supports their floral network through an innovative spirit,
comprehensive education and a commitment to raising the awareness of giving flowers. For
more than 100 years, FTD has stood for trust, quality, creativity and worldwide floral delivery.
The Todd Bachman Memorial Fund, to sponsor AFE’s
quarterly news Bulletin (2014)
Todd Bachman served as chairman and CEO of Bachman’s before his untimely death in 2008.
Todd was a past chairman of AFE and was very active in many state and national industry
organizations. He was a great communicator and demonstrated outstanding leadership and
devotion to work and family.
The Ecke Family Fund, $275,000 (2013)
Since 1976, the Ecke family has made countless and lasting contributions to AFE and the floral
industry. The Ecke name is synonymous with the modern day poinsettia, as three generations of
Ecke’s developed and promoted poinsettias worldwide.
The Del Demaree Family Fund, $250,000 to establish a
business internship program (2014)
Delmar “Del” Demaree has an unsurpassed commitment to the floral industry and to the
Endowment, where he served as chairman in the early 1990s. As chairman of Syndicate Sales,
Inc., Del has earned the utmost respect of his peers and colleagues throughout more than 60
years in the industry.
Herman and LaDonna Meinders Fund, $250,000 (2011)
Herman and LaDonna Meinders established AFE’s first undesignated named fund.
An industry icon and past AFE Trustee, Herman founded American Floral Services, Inc., which
grew to one of the world’s largest floral wire services.

The Pennock Company Fund, $125,000 (2014)
The Pennock Company was founded in 1882 and is the premier wholesaler serving the
Eastern seaboard with a full selection of cut flowers, floral containers and supplies and
specialty items. The Pennock Company has more than 200 associates in eight locations
and has been a proud supporter of AFE since the mid 1970s.
Mellano & Company Fund, $100,000 (2013)
Mellano & Company, headquartered at the LA Flower Market since 1925, is a leading cut
flower grower, shipper and wholesaler. Now in its third generation, Mellano & Company is
still plowing ahead in floriculture.
Olive Hill Greenhouses Fund, $75,000 (2013)
Olive Hill Greenhouses in Fallbrook, Calif., has grown into one of the largest interior plant
producers in the state since Tony and Sue Godfrey opened it in 1973. Olive Hill sets quality
standards high and has the support of excellent customers who appreciate their quality
plants and fantastic employees.
Tom Butler Family Fund, $50,000 (2014)
Teleflora Chairman Tom Butler began his distinguished career in the industry more than
44 years ago. He joined American Floral Services (AFS) as President and CEO and in 2000
led their merger with Teleflora, creating the world’s largest flowers-by-wire company.
Tom is a past chairman of AFE and was inducted into the SAF Hall of Fame in 2012 in
recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing floriculture.
The Peter Ullrich/Esmeralda Farms Fund, $35,000 (2014)
Peter Ullrich is the chairman of Esmeralda Farms, a market leader in the floral
industry that is committed to breeding, growing and distributing the highest
quality fresh cut flowers. Based in Miami, Esmeralda is dedicated to the sales,
marketing and distribution of flowers and only sells flowers grown by its own
operated farms in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Peter Ullrich and Esmeralda Farms
have been proud AFE supporters since 2000.
Sunlet Nursery, Inc. Fund, $25,000 (2013)
John and Janet Kister established Sunlet Nursery, Inc. in 1985 on the premise of offering
more unusual flowering plants than were typically available. Sunlet Nursery currently
supplies independent garden centers, wholesale florists and supermarkets across the U.S.
with an eclectic mix of flowering and foliage plants.

It is no secret that flowers and plants
make people happy. However, AFE and
the many ways it benefits the entire
floral industry are secrets that need
to be discovered by more retailers,
wholesalers, growers, importers and
allied organizations. The Board of Trustees
decided to take a surprising approach to
raising awareness to get noticed.

AFE-funded research has unearthed, from
eliminating pests and diseases to solving
breeding and genetic issues. The video is

For more than 50 years, the Endowment’s
work has benefited everyone. The hope
is that the video effectively reinforces all
the good that has been accomplished

AFE Research Funding - Benefiting the Entire Industry
Who benefits from a strong floral
industry? The answer is simple: everyone!
Production and post-harvest scientific research projects provide
essential knowledge for a growing and dynamic floricultural
industry. The complex and diverse structure of the industry makes
it difficult for single entities or individuals to support highly
comprehensive research programs.
The Endowment, however, allows all industry representatives,
regardless of size, to contribute to funding continuous floriculture
and horticulture research. Thus, AFE maintains strong, vibrant
floriculture and environmental horticulture industries. AFE
research priorities are focused on all floricultural crops – fresh cut
flowers, fresh cut greens, flowering potted plants, foliage plants

Gus Poesch Research Fund
The Gus Poesch Research
Fund was established in
honor of Gus Poesch, a true innovator and stimulator of research,
an influential educator and a respected businessman.
Poesch was a floriculture professor at The Ohio State University
for 11 years. The Gus Poesch Fund was created to help recruit high
quality floriculture graduate students and fund research projects
at Ohio State.

The scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke Jr.
of Encinitas, Calif., who made indispensable
contributions to the advancement of the
global floriculture industry. Among his
many interests was concern for the future
of floriculture, as influenced by innovative
research and educational programs.
He recognized that creative scientists
and educators are required to lead the
floral industry in the 21st century and
beyond. Thus, the primary objective of
the scholarship is to assist in funding the
education of graduate students (M.S. or
Ph.D.) who will become leading floricultural
scientists and educators.
Each year, one student will receive $5,000
for two consecutive years, providing they
continue to meet requirements.

The Vic and Margaret Ball
Intern Scholarship Program
In 1992, Vic and Margaret Ball made a
generous donation to AFE to establish this
program for students to receive critical
hands-on growing experience away from
home and to help establish successful
future generations of horticulturalists.
AFE supports opportunities focused on
attracting young people to the industry, as
well as educational endeavors to identify
and solve industry needs and challenges.
This year AFE is funding more than $58,000
in internships.
AFE offers two paid internship programs encouraging students to:

Gardens
Vic and Margaret Ball’s interest in
student training stems from their close
involvement with the DuPage Horticultural
School, for which they provided leadership
and direction. Having observed firsthand
the educational value of work-study, which
served as a cornerstone of that highly
respected program, they established
this internship program to help assure
continuance of practical experience
opportunities.

Internships are available for a period of
three, four or six months.
The Mosmiller Intern
Scholarship Program
Named in honor of the Colonel and Mrs.
Walter E. Mosmiller Jr., this internship is
geared toward equipping students with
real experience working with leaders in
floral retail, wholesale or allied trades.
Internships are available for a period of
10-16 weeks.
Colonel Mosmiller, a past AFE chairman
and a former retail florist in Richmond, Va.,
demonstrated a strong lifelong interest
in professional training and encouraged
young people to pursue careers in
the floral industry. The Endowment
established this program to honor the
Mosmillers and express a meaningful
extension of their industry dedication.

Del Demaree Business Internship
Established through a significant and generous gift from Del Demaree in 2015, the Del
Demaree Business Internship Program will provide internships to top collegiate talent
with a concentration in business (accounting, marketing, sales, communications, IT, etc.),
while introducing them to the floriculture industry. The program provides a 10-12 week paid internship in business management working
for prominent organizations in the floral industry.
Through the Demaree Business Internship Program and AFE, we have an opportunity
to offer students real experience working in and becoming familiar with the business
side of floriculture. Internships in accounting, marketing, sales, IT and HR can help

Educational Grants - Building a Stronger Floriculture Industry
The AFE Education Committee annually
reviews and approves funding for
educational programs to promote the
industry. The majority of programs focus
on attracting young people to the industry
or on educational endeavors to identify

The James and Helen Phillip Floral Design
Scholarship Grant
The James and Helen Phillip Scholarship Fund was established to honor James and Helen
Phillip by providing scholarship assistance to people in need who are interested in careers
in the retail sector of the floral industry. The fund was established by a $500,000 donation
by their daughter, Lee Phillip Bell, in 2008.
The scholarship provides annual grants to institutions to distribute to students. While the
majority of grants are geared toward the Great Lakes region, they are also available to
worthy applicants from elsewhere in the country.

AFE Research Examines
Honey Bee Health
AFE is funding a new research project to examine
the health of honey bees on ornamental plants
following treatment with neonicotinoids and other
systemic insecticides.
The two-year research project – “Impact and
Residual Activity of Systemic Insecticides in
Ornamental Plants,” with Clemson University
researchers J.C. Chong, Steven Klaine and Jennifer Tsuruda - will document the translocation of
systemic insecticides to various plant parts.
Honey bees are valuable to commercial crops, but
since the early 1950’s, honey bee colonies have
declined. In recent years, more rapid declines have
occurred, which has been referred to as colony collapse disorder (CCD). Use of the systemic pesticide
category, neonicotinoids, has been linked to CCD
due to the presumed presence of the chemical
in pollen and nectar following drench or spray
applications.
“This research will expand our knowledge about
one of the multiple factors often cited as being
related to CCD,” says AFE Research Coordinator
Terril Nell, Ph.D. “Armed with solid scientific
facts, the floral industry can continue to assure
consumers that their landscape plants and flowers
are safe for honey bees and other pollinators.”

Daniel Klittich, a doctoral candidate at the University of California (UC Davis), has been awarded the
2015 Paul Ecke Jr. Scholarship.
“I am very excited. Support from the industry is a
very meaningful and appreciated honor,” said Klittich, an aspiring floriculture scientist and educator
who grew up in the nursery business.
He said he is grateful for the opportunity to “help
the industry move forward” with his work on pest
control and management.
