OLNEY THEATRE C ENTER EVITA A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, What accounts for the world’s fascination with Eva Perón? Is it the rags-to-riches story of a woman born in poverty who rose to become the First Lady of Argentina by the age of 27? Is it her untimely death just six years later, sacrificed on the altar of the helpless and disenfranchised? Or are we just suckers for celebrity politicians like Evita, a former actress who manufactured her persona so completely that the Argentine Congress named her the “Spiritual Leader of the Nation” just months before her death? Eva Perón was a blazingly powerful young woman in a troubled country dominated by old men. Eva was a Dior-wearing champion of the descamisados, the shirtless poor; a ruthless political operative beloved by the people for her compassion; both a spiritual leader and a feminine icon. Those contradictions drew Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to create Evita, a resurrection story blending Latin rhythms like tangos and paso dobles with traditional rock and even High Church classical. The show won seven Tony Awards in 1980 and ushered in a British invasion on Broadway that lasted a generation. Lloyd Webber and Rice don’t take a wholly sympathetic view of their tragic heroine, placing her somewhere to the right on the saint-to-sinner spectrum. The character of Che inserts himself between us and Evita, condemning her vaulting ambition: Instead of government we had a stage Instead of ideas a Prima Donna’s rage Instead of help we were given a crowd She didn’t say much but she said it loud Sound familiar? The search for another truth about Eva Perón has captured the imaginations of Director Will Davis and Choreographer Christopher d’Amboise, who most recently brought Andrew Hinderaker’s Helen Hayes Award-winning Colossal to life on the Olney stage. For Evita we’ve given them Music Director Christopher Youstra and a much bigger canvas – the Mainstage – to paint Eva and Che in all their complexity. Was she a scheming whore or a martyred saint, Latin America’s great champion of women and the poor? As Will said at first rehearsal, “I’m a queer feminist making this piece from a place of deep love for the show, and making space to question it, to complexify it.” So I know this production will give you the full-throated, emotional experience you expect alongside a complex and challenging view of Eva Perón that just might illuminate our current political culture. Last but not least… leading a cast of exemplary performers is Rachel Zampelli, who returns to Olney after star turns in Godspell and Avenue Q. If you’re among the thousands who enjoyed those performances, I promise you’re about to be blown away by what she does here. Not for nothing did Patti LuPone, who created Evita on Broadway, famously refer to the vocal demands of the role as “a part that could only have been written by a man who hates women.” It’s a mezzo role with soprano notes, requiring nuanced emotional sophistication and extreme vocal output at the same time. This is not a challenge for the faint of heart. If you’ve seen Evita before, I can’t wait to hear what you think of this production. Even if you haven’t seen it before, drop me a line at [email protected]. Onward! Managing Editor: JJ Kaczynski OLN EY THEATRE C E NTE R Ad Sales: 301.924.4485 x105 Copyright by Olney Theatre Center. WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE Andrew Lloyd Webber (Composer) is the composer of some of the world’s best-known musicals including Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, and Sunset Boulevard. His latest musical, the hit stage version of the movie School of Rock, opened on Broadway in December 2015. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass which contains one of his best known compositions, “Pie Jesu”. He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created an honorary member of the House of Lords in 1997. He is passionate about the importance of music in education and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. Tim Rice (Lyricist) has worked in music, theatre and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes Of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast) and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess). He formed his own cricket team (Heartaches CC, still going strong) in 1973 and was President of the MCC in 2002. He recently wrote and presented a 52-part series for BBC Radio 2, American Pie, a trawl through the music and musicians of every American State. He has won several awards, mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up. 301.924.3400 OLNEYTHEATRE.ORG 15 WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE Will Davis (Director) is a director and choreographer focused on physically adventurous new work, and the newly appointed artistic director of American Theater Company in Chicago. Her iconic pose on the balcony of the Casa Rosada has been re-enacted live for audiences across the globe, and since the release of the 1996 movie starring Madonna, for millions more in cinemas. Evita is seen as the Mount Everest of musical theatre roles for women, and “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is one of the most famous songs in the musical theatre canon. Evita is undoubtedly one of the most famous and financially successful bio-musicals in Broadway history; unfortunately, two hours in the theater isn’t nearly enough time to learn all there is to know about one of the most inspirational and controversial figures in modern political history. The central problem with enshrining somebody as an icon is that icons are, by literal definition, two-dimensional. Even when the word is applied to a person, it refers to selected qualities of that figure, such as leadership or strength. After more than sixty years of her history being rewritten, and in large part thanks to the success of Evita, the historical Eva Perón has been eclipsed by the icon of Evita; a two-dimensional image of Evita probably holds more meaning for contemporary audiences outside Argentina than Eva’s actual legacy. Many contemporary Argentines hold Eva and Juan Perón close their hearts. Peronism is still considered an essential element of the liberal Partido Justicialista (Justice Party), which was in power from 1989 until last year. Eva is generally viewed as the epitome of generosity and kindness towards the less fortunate, and a foundation in her name exists as a charitable institution run by individuals that act in accordance with those principles. Because her legacy represents such forceful advocacy on behalf of the lower classes and women, politicians have tried to gain popular support by employing her image or words. Ex-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who led Argentina from 2007 to 2015, was often compared to Evita during her election and presidency. Kirchner was dogged by accusations of corruption and cronyism during her tenure, and rose to political power alongside her husband Néstor Kirchner, Argentina’s President from 2003 until 2007. She employed Evita’s image during her 2007 campaign; after being elected, she displayed an image of Evita behind her during presidential speeches, and her administration commissioned two 100-foot high iron murals of Evita to decorate the Social Development Ministry building in Buenos Aires. Just like in the story of Eva and Juan, economic downturn and discontent among the middle class eventually led to opposition against the Partido Justicialista, and the party’s 26-year-long run of presidential power ended with the election of 2015. Employing the icon of Evita was a romantic way to begin a political campaign, but ultimately could not hold the love of the people. Icons of all sorts need examination from time to time, which is why Olney Theatre Center’s production of Evita looks and feels different from prior productions. Lloyd Webber and Rice’s operatic narrative is one version of a short and rich life, but certainly neither definitive nor historically faithful. Eva and Che Guevara, the original inspiration for the character of Che, never met, yet audiences all over the world have come to learn about her through his narration of the musical. Two British men wrote a rock opera narrated by a world-famous revolutionary, wresting control of the story away from Eva herself. Largely because of this musical, the icon of Evita lies on shaky dramaturgical ground, but beneath it is the real Eva Perón who ignited the world for a short time. Yes, she graced the balcony of the Casa Rosada alongside her husband, but she also used the streets of Buenos Aires as her personal stage and the radio waves as her vehicle to the Argentine people. This is the Evita we hope you see on our stage and will embrace with us—a multi-dimensional young woman faced with her own mortality and concerned with her immortality, not just an image on a page. —Alexandra Ley, Dramaturg CONTEXT GUIDE As Eva Perón’s popularity and power grew throughout the 1940s, she began to cultivate her image for the Argentine people. Eva’s formal education was fairly limited, but her comprehension of celebrity politics put her ahead of her time; she understood that her strong physical presence was the foundation of the people’s love for her. Eva’s signature style differentiated the political animal of Evita from the other roles that Eva had previously inhabited: María Eva Duarte Ibarguren the illegitimate child, Eva Duarte the mediocre actress and radio personality, and Juan Perón’s gold digging wife Eva. The style of Evita was, essentially, what made Evita. Retrato del Presidente Juan Domingo Perón y su señora esposa María Eva Duarte de Perón. The official portrait of President Juan Domingo Perón, accompanied with the First Lady, María Eva Duarte de Perón. By Numa Ayrinhac. F rom a young age, Eva possessed ethereally pale skin, and her early public attempts to make up her face with cosmetics were heavily criticized. She eventually settled on using just red lipstick and forgoing makeup on the rest of her face. T he chignon Eva wore was easy for her to pull out at the end of a long day, but also gave her a sort of halo that augmented the perception that she was Argentina’s ‘Peronist Madonna.’ She dyed her hair blonde for a film shoot in 1945 and never returned to brunette. C hristian Dior was a favorite designer of Evita’s, and created many of her signature outfits. She was fond of football shoulders, large hats, and platform shoes that she could walk in. One of the secrets to Evita’s success was that she worked with very specific stylists who understood her fashion style and needs. EVITA Timothy O’Brien and Tazeena Firth’s costume designs in the 1970s established the glamour of Evita’s public image and the flavor of 1940s Argentina, a precedent that has been followed ever since in successive productions. Madonna had a reported 85 costume changes in the 1996 film adaptation, a Guinness World Record. E ach time she shifts costume, it is very deliberate, a specific moment of change or growth in her life. This pared down version of Evita is a very different approach from many productions, where Eva’s journey is illustrated with a fashion show parade of constantly transforming costumes. - Ivania Stack, Evita Costume Designer B R O U G H T TO YO U BY BA ROUH STAN BAROUH PHOTOGRAPHY PERFORMING ARTS | SPECIAL EVENTS | PORTRAITURE [email protected] Dine Sunday thru Thursday and receive $10 OFF your check!
