Dec. - Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library
Mishawaka-Penn-Harris September-December 2015 mphpl.org 4-Month Program Guide | For Children, Teens & Adults Program Guide Contents: The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library is a proud participant in Indiana’s Bicentennial activities. Starting this fall and continuing throughout 2016, MPHPL will provide programming to help celebrate this momentous occasion in our state’s history. The celebration starts this fall and includes a special presentation from Dr. Mark Schurr, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame on the Potawatomi and the Miami in the Removal Period. The Removal Period (from A.D. 1795 to about 1840) saw the demise of the fur trade and the development of new ways of life as Native Americans adapted to dramatic economic, social, political, and ecological changes. Investigations of Potawatomi and Miami Removal Period sites in the Midwest have provided new data that highlight the diversity of Native American responses. Children will learn about Indiana during the Civil War, make Indiana keychains, and continue to pave their way to a healthy future by exploring learning skills through music. Did You Know? Indiana became the 19th state on Dec. 11, 1816, when President James Madison signed the congressional resolution admitting Indiana to the Union. Along the Indiana shore of Lake Michigan, many unusual plants, including prickly pear cactus, lichen mosses, bearberry and more than 20 varieties of orchids grow in the Indiana Dunes area. As of May 2013, there are over 553,000 Bicentennial License plates on the road in Indiana. Santa Claus, Indiana, receives more than a half million “Dear Santa” letters at Christmas time every year. Santa’s little helpers are sure to get them to the North Pole in time for Christmas. Garfield the Cat creator Jim Davis was born in Albany, Indiana.
